Book Description
Over the past 50 years, there have been many success stories from companies and individuals using quality and continuous improvement to improve organizational performance. We have come to know and respect the works of great teachers such as Deming, Juran, and Ishikawa, who have taught lasting techniques to millions of business leaders. And we have seen many new quality techniques and strategies such as re-engineering, TQM, and Six Sigma sweep the business world. But achieving successful results is not a simple process, and with all of the different options and opinions available, many business leaders do not know the best way to begin their continuous improvement efforts.
In The Recipe for Simple Business Improvement, author David Till helps explain the different philosophies of continuous improvement, breaking each down to its common similarities. The book lays out an effective and uncomplicated path that can be followed by any organization, small or large, to bring about significant business-improvement. Till introduces his six key ingredients that serve as the building blocks for all successful business improvement efforts. He explains in detail how each works and can be implemented, placing particular emphasis on the role of leaders in the change process. Finally, the last chapter is a short fictitious story that ties these theories and strategies together and demonstrates how they can be utilized in the `real world'.
The Recipe for Simple Business Improvement is particularly suitable for application where resources are limited, or there is a desire to gain rapid improvement such as turnaround situations. The book also includes a CD-ROM with forms and worksheets that you can use to implement these changes in your own workplace.

Book Description
Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways are modules involved in the transduction of extracellular signals to intracellular targets in all eukaryotes. Distinct MAPK pathways are regulated by different extracellular stimuli and are implicated in a wide variety of biological processes. In plants, there is evidence for MAPKs playing a role in the signaling of abiotic stresses, pathogens, plant hormones, and cell cycle cues. The large number and divergence of plant MAPKs indicates that this ancient mechanism of bioinformatics is extensively used in plants and may provide new molecular hands on old questions.

Book Description
Despite the dedicated efforts of many individuals and organizations, the great apes--our closest living relatives--are on the very edge of extinction. This sweeping atlas provides a comprehensive overview of what is currently known about all six species of great apes--chimpanzee, bonobo, Sumatran orangutan, Bornean orangutan, eastern gorilla, and western lowland gorilla. Created in association with The Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP), this book gives a thorough background on ape behavior and ecology for each species, including detailed habitat requirements, the apes' ecological role, and the possible consequences of their decline. World Atlas of Great Apes also offers a full description of the threats, current conservation efforts, and additional protection needed for each species across its entire range. Many full-color maps and illustrations make the abundance of information accessible to a broad readership, from specialists and policymakers to general readers concerned about the survival of these charismatic primates.
This book represents the work of a dynamic alliance of many of the world's leading great ape research and conservation organizations. Bringing together United Nations agencies, governments, foundations, and private-sector interests, the project aims to raise the international profile of great ape conservation and to build the political will for further action. Readers learn about work being done by specific organizations in support of great ape conservation, and where conservation is most needed and most likely to be effective.
¥Covers all six species of great apes
¥Provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive data available
¥More than 150 full-color photos
¥More than 50 full-color maps and diagrams

The Assault on Reason
ASIN: 0520236688 |
Book Description
The World Atlas of Biodiversity is an updated edition of Global Biodiversity: Status of the Earth's Living Resources, originally published in 1992 and reissued in 2000 as Global Biodiversity: Earth's living resources in the 21st Century. This 2002 edition, totally redesigned and updated, includes new data and graphics, additional photos, and additional material on food issues and biodiversity, as well as an entirely new chapter on protected areas and other conservation issues.
World Atlas of Biodiversity addresses the remarkable growth in concern at all levels for living things and the environment, and increased appreciation of the links between the state of ecosystems and the state of humankind. Building on a wealth of research and analysis by the conservation community worldwide, this book provides a comprehensive and accessible view of key global issues in biodiversity. It outlines some of the broad ecological relationships between humans and the rest of the material world and summarizes information on the health of the planet. Opening with an outline of some fundamental aspects of material cycles and energy flow in the biosphere, the book goes on to discuss the expansion of this diversity through geological time and the pattern of its distribution over the surface of the Earth, and trends in the condition of the main ecosystem types and the species integral to them.

Great encyclopedia, but why page-spliting graphics?.......2007-04-26
This is a great reference book that is richly illustrated with high-quality graphics. I'm not sure why the editors/authors decied to arrange many of these graphics so that they span the page split, a characteristic that obscures some detail and makes the examination of data-rich maps difficult.
Overlooking this limitation, there is relatively little to complain about. I like the standard layout of the map-based information and it appears to be relatively complete. I recommend this book for educators and for those wishing to have a geographically-oriented overview of the biosphere.

Terrific Illustrations!!!.......2003-09-19
This book has the best illustrations regarding the strategics of the sport I have seen in any racquetball book, new or old...I highly recommend it for the illustrations alone.
Review of physical demonstrations.......2003-09-19
The actual concept of the strategic goals of this sport is well examplified by excellent pictorial views with sub-title explanations. I recommend this book to anyone desiring a basic and full understanding of the fundamentals of racquetballs strategic concepts, and how to dominate the game strategically, easily demonstrated via the illustrations in this book...Excellently done, even though this book is a bit oudated via today's racquets and a few rules have changed, the fundamentals, and understanding the dominance of controlling the center of the court has not changed.
How To Improve Your Racquetball.......2002-10-25
AFTER MANY YEARS OF PLAYING RACQUETBALL, I RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A HOLIDAY GIFT. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK, WITH EXCELLENT DIAGRAMS, AND HAS BEEN EXTREMEMLY HELPFUL IN TEACHING ME TO LOSE MY TENNIS SWING IN MY RACQUETBALL GAME. GREAT STRATEGY HELP AND DIAGRAMS TOO....
A total piece of junk..........2002-02-21
...this book was a complete waste of time and money.
Check out Chapter 1 "Equipment Selection Guidelines",
where they give you a bunch of hot tips about selecting
the best aluminum frame rackets. Actually, I realized
I'd been shucked well before that, when I saw the cover,
which was decorated with pictures of racketball stars from
the 70s with Studio 54 hairstyles who are now probably in
the old folks' home. I've been trying to learn racketball
by running around like a chicken with my head cut off while
my opponents try not to laugh themselves to death, and I can
confidently report that that experience has taught me far
more than this book ever could.
Best overview for all levels of play in any single book!.......1999-10-26
Excellent strategy examples, excellent photography explaining details from the beginner to the expert player/professional. A compiliation, only one of it's kind, where the strengths of all touring professionals is expresed.
Book Description
With endorsements from two of the largest and most influential public speaking groups -- the National Speakers Association and Toastmasters International-- this book is written by an award-winning speaker and storyteller. Stories add depth and interest to any presentation. They get an audience listening, add a change of pace, teach without preaching, provide a context for information, and create a bond between the speaker and the audience. This practical, down-to-earth guide will teach readers how to use stories and humor to support their speaking objectives. From the apparently "spontaneous" story that's planned well in advance to an entire presentation that is a story, the author demonstrates how professional speakers use stories and humor, and shows how readers can use these elements to add polish and appeal to their own speeches and presentations. Readers will find a wealth of step-by-step ideas, tips, worksheets, and exercises to help you make effective use of stories. They'll discover how to create the critical elements of successful stories, learn how to see with a storyteller's eye, master techniques like foreshadowing and pace to create interest and drama. They will even find out how to become a likable narrator, keep their presentation balanced, and fresh - even when called upon to repeat it often. This is an ideal reference for professionals and novice speakers who want be remembered by their audiences.
Part of the Essence of Public Speaking Series.
Customer Reviews:
Title is not topic.......2003-03-02
I ordered this book to get some useful hints to improve the building and telling of (funny) sorries. I recieved a motley collection of what sorries supposed to do and general knowledge on sorries and humor.
Let me give an example for the whole book on the basis of her advice on using humor. In the chapter which is dedicated to the usage of humor itself you will find such interesting topics like:
- How to make a speech
(After reading the book so far I have no idea. Perhaps it might be a little bit early to talk about a speech before you described at least the basics of humor.)
- What is humor?
(Oh, here we are ... But after finishing the section I still have no idea. Maybe five quatations of about three lines each are not very much and by the way wasn't at least a related topic of the book developing ideas on my own? Shouldn't that also be true for the author?)
- Why all the interest in humor?
(I actually want to use it. Who cares?)
- Key differences: The humorous speaker, the humorist, and the comedian
(A chance to fill another two pages)
- Humor that works and humor that doesn't work from the platform
(One of her recommendations: "Never Tease Anyone in Your Audience". Never bore anyone reading.)
- Male and female differences in humor
(Never thought about that ...)
- Who laughts when
(Only a collection of generalities on different audiences but might indeed be helpful - unfortunately with a little bit more than two pages quite short.)
After all I can warmly recommend the book to somebody who has no idea of telling a storry and has the time and wants to go to the trouble of finding a few well hidden useful informations. But as a book on presentation techniques for advanced people who are at least able to speak to two others sitting around a table, it's not worth the money.
A down-to-earth guide for story-tellers.......2001-04-14
This is a valuable book for the public speaker who would like to enhance the speaking style by the use of stories and humor. It provides practical tips and exercises to make effective use of stories in public presentaions. Stories have always been used in our society not only to add flavor and appeal to presentations but also to instruct and inform the audience. The first few chapters of the book deal with the importance of the use of stories for our generation and what follows is a clear road map for story-tellers out of the rich experience of the author and many other accomplished public speakers like herself. This handy guide with eleven chapters deals more with stories than with humor. Each chapter provides a summary and some exercises at the end. The basic nuts and bolts provided by the author here have been very useful to me in my teaching and preaching.
Outstanding Book On Public Speaking.......2000-11-18
This is one of the most valuable books on public speaking that I have read. Before you buy a book on one liners, joke book or how to keep them laughing. Read this book and find out how to develop your own personal stories. I took it page by page and found that I had an amazing number of stories to develop. As she says: Your own stories will ring true. I know a CEO of a large company that starts each speech with a very dumb joke that he seems to think works. He must pay a lot to his speech writer. In real life people laugh at old jokes that are O.K., but they are still old. I have been crafting my own stories after reading this book. It makes me sound like a more interesting person than I am. It has got to be a lot fresher material, Im the only one that lived it. I bought a bunch of joke books early on and I wish I could get my money back. They become boring so fast. The only story worth telling is one that is relevant to your point. That is where this book comes in. The book details so many aspects of humor. How to use humor. Where it comes from. Shaping stories. The best in the Essence of Public Speaking Series.
How to create compelling stories and humor........1998-02-14
Author's comments: Bore no more! A step-by-step guide for finding, developing and sharing great stories. In addition, the section on humor offers important rules for using humor effectively and appropriately. Great storytellers sense the inherent drama in life's daily activities and work to heighten it, taking ordinary moments and transforming them into extraordinary insights. This book is a must for clergy, speakers, teachers, presenters, parents, sales people, association executives, business people, therapists, and anyone who wants to improve his/her communications skills. Includes: ways to find great stories, how to build characters and drama, use of significant detail to make your stories "sing," presentation techniques, practice techniques, tips for stage presence, when to use humor, where to find humor, how to deliver humor and who laughs and when. By exploring the tools of fiction writers, I encourage my readers to awaken the theatre of the mind. Once our audiences experience our stories, they will never be the same. Using the techniques in this book faithfully, you too can tell compelling stories!

Skilled Lettering examples/superb historical detail.......2002-09-25
An amazing book full of superior examples of penmanship, fine mark making through to highly skilled illustrative works. If you are not a reader who likes wading through text, the examples themselves stand alone for their sheer beauty and skill - excellent as exemplars to improve your own lettering works, or just to open your eyes to the broad variety of styles, skills and individuality of the best known penman of the era. I study the examples regularly and recommend this book to my own students as an excellent reference work.
While the graphics inspire and educate on the quality one desires to achieve, the well constructed text in the book transports us back to an era when lettering was a part of everyday life - where schools in penmanship taught learners in a rigorous and hectic schedule with drills and practice and more practice - lives so dedicated to their artform that we can only imagine what it was like today.
This book will delightfully inform and educate you about this wonderful time in American calligraphy through the carefully woven stories of the lives of these Master Penman. It fills a gap with information and samples that had previously only been available to those who spend a lifetime studying the history of penmanship.
A book to be in every calligraphers and historians library (and even those who just love a delightful read out of interest) and well worth the cost - even with the poor exchange rate in Australia! Don't miss it!
A unique gem on historical American Calligraphy.......2002-09-25
As someone who takes both the art and history of American calligraphy very serious I was speechless when I first saw this book! In fact, the importance of this book in helping to document a portion of the rich, but almost forgotten, calligraphic heritage of the United States cannot be overstated. `An Elegant Hand' represents this history from the perspective of one of the great Master Penman of the past, WC Henning. Henning was intimately involved with masters such Louis Madarasz, AN Palmer, WE Dennis and FB Courtney. All of whom are represented in the book as well as many others. The book is a delightful read and very accessible to even the novice calligrapher/pen art enthusiast. Furthermore, it is literally jam packed with art containing specimen after specimen from past masters that will serve as a source of study for calligraphers of any level. I consider it a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in calligraphy.
