    Book Description

Changes in information technology have created a new and highly volatile environment for modern companies. One of the areas most affected is in crisis management. Companies are more open to hostile or anti-corporate activity, while needing to be responsive in the way they react to the variety of threats which new technology brings. These trends make companies vulnerable in many different ways, and ensure that in future, crises pack more punch, do more damage and do it faster.

The role technology has to play is twofold. It will sometimes be the cause, or used as a weapon to provoke crisis. It is also at the heart of planning for and managing crisis, either to manage or shape information or to expedite management attempts to solve problems and respond quickly, while rebuilding corporate and product reputation.

This book is based on a combination of one author's academic research into the global impact of new technology and the other author's experiences consulting with disaster struck corporations. It will take a broad, accessible approach aimed at analyzing:

    * New threats delivered globally and instantly
    * Online audiences and influencers who drive crises and issues
    * How to build a more resilient crisis-management structure
    * Developing communication strategies to protect corporate reputations to survive
    * Preparing to cope with outsourcing relations to protect or deal with crisis

Readers interested in crisis management, the management of technology and corporate communications will all find something here to challenge their perspectives and change their practice.

    Book Description

When The Knowledge-Creating Company (OUP; nearly 40,000 copies sold) appeared, it was hailed as a landmark work in the field of knowledge management. Now, Enabling Knowledge Creation ventures even further into this all-important territory, showing how firms can generate and nurture ideas by using the concepts introduced in the first book. Weaving together lessons from such international leaders as Siemens, Unilever, Skandia, and Sony, along with their own first-hand consulting experiences, the authors introduce knowledge enabling--the overall set of organizational activities that promote knowledge creation--and demonstrate its power to transform an organization's knowledge into value-creating actions. They describe the five key "knowledge enablers" and outline what it takes to instill a knowledge vision, manage conversations, mobilize knowledge activists, create the right context for knowledge creation, and globalize local knowledge. The authors stress that knowledge creation must be more than the exclusive purview of one individual--or designated "knowledge" officer. Indeed, it demands new roles and responsibilities for everyone in the organization--from the elite in the executive suite to the frontline workers on the shop floor. Whether an activist, a caring expert, or a corporate epistemologist who focuses on the theory of knowledge itself, everyone in an organization has a vital role to play in making "care" an integral part of the everyday experience; in supporting, nurturing, and encouraging microcommunities of innovation and fun; and in creating a shared space where knowledge is created, exchanged, and used for sustained, competitive advantage. This much-anticipated sequel puts practical tools into the hands of managers and executives who are struggling to unleash the power of knowledge in their organization.

This book made me discover knowledge management. It is very well documented, very thougthful, easy to read... An excellent starting point.

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge Enabling not KM !!.......2002-06-18

I had a pleasant surprise when a friend of mine decided to gift me "Enabling Knowledge Creation" by Georg Von Krogh, Kazuo Ichijo and Ikujiro Nonaka. It forms a sequel to "the Knowledge Creating Company" co-authored by Nonaka and Takeuchi published in 1995 . The first book was a seminal work which has profoundly influenced my views on Knowledge Creation (Nonaka refuses to entertain the concept of KM , resolutely denying that Knowledge
can ever be managed!) along with writers like Tom Davenport and Larry Prusak. However, the first book was open to a lot of criticism saying that it was just too "theoretic", "vague" and "generalised" ...Nonaka et al try and get more hands on, and tool bookish with this book.

However, this book is likely to disturb people who have read and formed ideas about KM by reading works of the American thought leaders.

In the start of the book the authors try and make the difference explicit.

In a passage titled "what's wrong with knowledge management?" they spell it out :

Pitfall I: KM relies on easily detectable, quantifiable information.
Pitfall II: KM is devoted to the manufacture of tools.
Pitfall III: KM depends on a Knowledge Officer.

While the premises of Knowledge Enabling and Creation are:

Premise I: Knowledge is justified true belief, individual and social, tacit and explicit.
Premise II: Knowledge depends on your perspective.
Premise III: Knowledge Creation is a craft , not a science.

The authors reiterate that organizational Knowledge Creation involves five main steps :

    1. Sharing tacit knowledge
    2. Creating concepts
    3. Justifying concepts
    4. Building a prototype
    5. Cross-leveling knowledge.

To facilitate this the following 5 enablers need to be in place :

    1. instill a knowledge vision
    2. manage conversations
    3. mobilize knowledge activits
    4. Create the right context
    5. Globalize local knowledge

The book is rich in case studies which show how different companies that follow these concepts are growing in leaps and bounds and innovating over others who remain stuck in the KM paradigm.

The authors note that in the Knowledge journey companies can be mapped in 3 phases, which might or might not be sequential.

    1. The Risk Minimisers , whose focus is capturing and locating knowledge. The tools they use are data warehousing, datamining, Yellow pages, IC-Navigator, Balanced Scorecard, Knowledge Audits, IC-Index, Business Information Systems, Rule-based systems [these firms still view knowledge as a resource that needs to be collected and managed]

    2. The Efficiency Seekers, who focus on transferring and sharing knowledge. The tools they use are internets, intranets, Lotus Notes/Groupware, Networked organization, knowledge workshops, knowledge workbench, Best Practice Transfer, Benchmarking, Knowledge-gap analysis, Knowledge sharing culture, Technology transfer units, Knowledge transfer units, Systems Thinking

    3. The Innovators who enable Knowledge creation are typically those who embrace a knowledge vision, managing conversations, creating the right context, mobilize knowledge activists, globalize local knowledge, professional innovation networks, new organizational forms, New HRM-systems, new corporate values, project management systems, corporate universities, communities and storyboards.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-03-21

Dust off those liberal arts degrees before opening this challenging treatise on knowledge management, written by a trio of academics who call themselves "constructionists," quote Sartre and speak passionately of "post-modernism." Their work explains how to gain initiative and constructive input from workers by modifying traditional command structures - a grounded approach that is much more realistic than the revolutionary conversions called for by other experts. Managers who balk at the thought of granting autonomy or increased access to their employees may well be converted away from their hierarchical dogma here. We at getAbstract particularly recommend the lively knowledge-creation case histories and the wonderful section explaining how companies can create valid, imaginative futures. (What if IBM had imagined a world in which software was more important than mainframes?)

5 out of 5 stars Sustainable advantage through knowledge enabling.......2000-06-05

In the many publications on Knowledge Management, the writings by Von Krogh and Nonaka (and, in this case, Ichijo) stand out in a number of aspects: 1) their emphasis of knowledge "management" as an essentially human and social process 2) their emphasis on linking knowledge management with strategic focus and business results 3) the inspiring examples and writing style.

This book is a clear showcase of these elements. It provides a profound yet pragmatic guidance on the road to becoming a learning organisation. Where capturing & locating, and transferring & sharing knowledge are essential in achieving competitive advantage through knowledge, the real source of sustainable advantage is, as the authors claim, the continuous creation of new knowledge, as a result of developing a strategic vision and an enabling organisation and culture to realise that (evolving) vision.

Being involved in implementing a number of the concepts in our organisation, I am convinced this book provides many ideas and tools that will help today's corporate world in reshaping our business for the knowledge economy.

    Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Focus on knowledge creation, but what about integration?.......2000-05-30

The author's of this book are leading thinkers in the KM field. Perhaps the best way to describe this book is as a sequel to Nonaka's earlier 1995 book. But, we all remember what happened to Scarlett, again a much touted sequel. Although this book was a slight disappointment since Nonaka has set reader's expectations a little too high with his earlier groundbreaking title "The Knowledge Creating ompany" that, for the most part, defined KM as we know it. An academic reader will appreciate they theoretical insights provided and extensive references to supporting literature. But there are some aspects that this book underplays: 1. Knowledge creation is fine, but knowledge integration is perhaps as important---an issue to which the authors pay little attention. 2. Excellent ideas aside, this book underplays the significance of empirical evidence and most cases tend to be descriptive qualitative analyses. 3. The role of technology is highly underplayed. 4. The book has "sufficient" overlap with the authors' research papers in the uropean Management Journal. For academic readers who have read those, this might be a little disappointing. 5. The concept of KM and it's relationship with innovation at architectural and component levels is not described in much detail.

On the positive side, you will find that: 1) Lots of issues that were barely touched upon in Nonaka's preceding book are described in further detail. 2) The book is very well written and the tone is accsible to both academic and non-academic readers. 3) the concept of BA is elucidated in further detail Readers who do not follow academic research journals might find that an interesting extension. 4) A link between strategy and KM is well illustrated. For businesses, KM is of little value if there are no results. The authors describe how to look for those results (or in lay terms, ROI). Academic readers will also find Nonaka's recent paper in a recent issue of Organization Science (2000) to be of much interest. Academic readers must also realize that the approach here seems to be "post modern," and indeed quite qualitative in the European research tradition.

To sum my opinion, this book is a worthy addition to the bookshelves; but, it is not to be read without reading Nonaka's preceding book "The Knowledge Creating Company." A word of warning is in order: Academic readers will enjoy this title however, managerial readers might find it a little heavy and abstract. Indeed, this book stands out of the crowd with three authors who are well respected in the American research circles---consequently, its high overall quality comes as no surprise. Recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-02-10

I bought this book for first year dental. This book has the best pictures and dissections. It is very detailed yet easy to read. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars A reference "must" for holistic appreciation of teeth........1998-05-29

Berkovitz and coworkers provide pictures, pictures, pictures of exquisite quality. There is no more successful method for teaching histology than through numerous sections coupled with a de-emphasis on description. This text is like having a microscope at your fingertips and pre-dental/medical and graduate students rave about the book. Given the embryological format, the macro and micro portions dovetail quite well. Some dissapointing picture quality of head and neck structures and dental gross anatomy photographs are too small to grasp occlusal morphology. The comparative mammalian dental anatomy section is nice. Missing only is exposure to forensic odontology as applied responsibility for both clinician and academician to explore.

5 out of 5 stars Useful textbook for dental educators and researchers........1998-04-23

I found this text useful as a reference text as a dental educator. It is comprehensive and the color histological references are very clearly presented. The photographs of the teeth, as well as the gross anatomical sections, seem slightly out of focus in this edition. Information is presented with references that are further useful and up to date, especially when considering research in the hard dental and neural tissues. I refer to it constantly in my studies.

4 out of 5 stars Informative BUT much of the comparative chapter removed!.......1998-01-10

Although more updated information has been added to the previous edition, much of the COMPARATIVE PART have been removed. This is disappointing since the chapter was the main reason I bought the book. I also found that the quality of photographs is inferior to the previous edition.

For the first time in one collection, here are Colorado's most famous animal stories, carefully researched and written by children's book author Gayle C. Shirley. Read About... Shep, the canine greeter on the Denver-Boulder Turnpike Buff and Blaze, the grizzly and longhorn who dueled to the death Bum and Shorty, the unlikely couple who paired up for survival Ralphie, the CU buffalo homecoming queen who charged up the football team These stories and more reveal how some animals were celebrated for their loyalty and intelligence, while others were cursed and feared because their instincts to survive put them in conflict with people. Whatever the reasons, their legends provide enjoyable reading for animal-lovers of all ages.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but there are better........2005-12-06

While this book covers all of the key elements of good training and racing, there are better books available on nutrition and training strategies (especially since the book is now almost ten years old). The book focuses on Sebastian Coe and uses him as an example. This only works to a point since most people didn't end up with his genes. If you are coaching young runners (many without Sebastian Coe's body or personality) and tried to use the mental conditioning section uniformly with each runner you would lose or ruin a good share of them.

4 out of 5 stars Alright but a little too technical for me.......2005-08-30

The book gives good guidelines to long distance racing, but it is geared to older children and was a little too technical for me.

Peter Coe has put together a short, highly readable volume that will benefit both coach and runner. He discusses in depth all things related to running the 800 and 1500. His multi-paced training program makes a lot of sense. I found myself underlining a lot of passages. Well Done!!

            5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2000-06-22

I found this book well-written and to the point. I like it very much as it does not have the scientific mumbo-jumbo frequently found in training guides. It also included some race strategies which I found very helpful. After following the training schedule for a few months, I found that my times had improved significantly. I'm recommending this book to all my runner friends!

            Book Description

The extensively revised and completely updated second edition of this popular textbook provides LIS practitioners and students with a vital guide to the organization of information. After a broad overview of the concept and its role in human endeavors, Taylor proceeds to a detailed and insightful discussion of such basic retrieval tools as bibliographies, catalogs, indexes, finding aids, registers, databases, major bibliographic utilities, and other organizing entities. After tracing the development of the organization of recorded information in Western civilization from 2000 B.C.E. to the present, the author addresses topics that include encoding standards (MARC, SGML, and various DTDs), metadata (description, access, and access control), verbal subject analysis including controlled vocabularies and ontologies, classification theory and methodology, arrangement and display, and system design.

I used this textbook for a core cataloging course for my LIS degree. It provides a good foundation for different information systems. The author includes important discussion of Web technologies, like XML, and how they are used in conjunction with traditional library encoding systems like MARC. It includes sections on systems design that are not deep, but appropriate given the introductory nature of this book. Unlike some other reviewers, I had no trouble with acronyms, and other definitions: the book has a thorough index, in addition to a glossary.

2 out of 5 stars Very Technical and Difficult to Understand.......2005-12-14

This book was the required textbook for a Master's Degree course in library science which I recently completed. I wish the instructor would have chosen a different book. This book is full of technical jargon that is very difficult to understand. Having worked in a library for the past ten years, I still found the terminology used in this book to be very hard to follow and comprehend. The examples that are given are difficult to understand, and the text itself is extremely difficult to read and digest.

For an introductory textbook, this book is very difficult to read and understand. I got very little out of reading it, and I sometimes found myself having more questions after reading the book than I did before. If you are a student that is required to use this book, I can only hope that you get more from it than I did.

            1 out of 5 stars Disorganized Information........2005-11-07

This text was required reading for an introductory cataloging class. I have found it to be difficult to navigate as an introductory piece. The writing is sub par and it is clear that this is a second edition work.

For example, the author will introduce an acronym and fail to identify what it stands for, or you will find materials that should be restricted to later chapters incorporated into earlier chapters, which creates a scattered organization feel.

Her work in Wynar's Introduction to Cataloging and Classification is of significantly higher quality and is more apropos for an introductory level class than this text.

All and all, I would not recommend this text fro an introduction to knowledge organization. Hope you never have to work with it in class... and if you do, pick up supplementary materials, you are going to need it.

This is a decent book. Not that exciting, but required reading for me.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook!.......2005-09-21

This is an excellent textbook. It is well organized and clearly written, explaining difficult concepts in understandable language for students. It covers the history of information organization in libraries, archives, and museums, as well as tools such as inventories, bibliographies, catalogs and indexes, and methods and standards of codification; reviews the history and development of the internet; describes different kinds of databases; and discusses metadata as a theoretical and practical concept, reviewing different kinds of metadata schemes. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Un texto que no envejece.......2002-01-19

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sorting reference.......1997-03-28

There are many Computer Science references that show several common sorting techniques but most stop there. This book has what no other that I've seen had: A concise discussion of sorting data that won't fit into storage at once.

It's easy to sort items when you can load them all into memory. Many books show how to do that.

This is the first book that I've seen that explains, in detail, methods for sorting data that is too large to fit in memory at once. Techniques are shown, then refined.

An amazing book. Although it's a textbook, it's an excellent reference for all programmers. Even if you think you know a great deal about file structures and/or sorting data, you will learn something from the techniques shown in this book. I couldn't put it down.

            5 out of 5 stars A truly great book.......1996-09-18

As a senior software designer, I helped implement file structures for dBASE, cc:Mail, Collabra Share and other commercial software packages. I spent 16 years learning this subject, and Folk and Zoellick taught me a few things in addition to presenting the material so logically, so usefully, that no one need write a book on this subject again

5 out of 5 stars I've never seen a best written file structures book !!.......1996-08-20

The metodology used by the authors to write the book is really excelent.
Starting every chapter with a very interesting introduction and covering all the aspects of the inteligent design of file structures with many examples in pseudocode. The references to other books and papers in the end of each chapter makes you fell secure. The index of key words (with a small summary) is really usefull, when you finish reading a chapter you can test yourself to see if you really know it (when you have little time, for example, a day before exams, then it's much more usefull). The exercises and programming projects (always using real world problems) after this index closes each chapter nicelly. The book also discusses the problems with implementations in C and Pascal.
            The best one !!!
            Congratulations to Folk and Zoellick.

                Book Description

There are two very contrasting approaches to reading this book and learning about organizational design. The more traditional approach is to read the book, and then use the OrgCon on cases and applications. The second approach is to begin with the OrgCon software and only examine the book as you find it helpful. Which approach is better? It is your choice, not ours. In our experience, students in organizational design prefer to start with the OrgCon and a case, rather than with the book itself. Readers who have more background in organization theory and design usually examine the book first.

There are numerous changes in the third edition. The literature review in each chapter has been updated. The information processing approach is strengthened and applied more comprehensively as the theoretical underpinnings. Throughout we have rewritten the text beyond normal editing in an attempt to make the presentation clearer and easier to read.

                Book Description

The elegant artwork of Curt Swan (1920-1996) defined the look of Superman for over 30 years. His amazing skills of storytelling, draftsmanship, and design brought a realism and sense of wonder to The Man of Steel's adventures, making them the best-selling comic books of their day. Filled with iconic and previously unseen artwork, this fascinating biography traces the artist's career from the beginning on features like "Gangbusters" to his widespread regard as the Dean of American comics and, later, his frustrations with an industry that viewed his dignified work as unfashionable. Fascinating one-on-one interviews with Curt Swan's family members as well as comics legends Joe Kubert, Carmine Infantino, Murphy Anderson, and dozens more paint a portrait of the artist as elegant as the artist's work itself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tribute to a great artist.......2004-03-01

I've been a fan of Curt Swans art for over 30 years and I never knew much about the man until I read this book. It features many interviews with people involved in the comics industry who knew and/or worked with Curt over the years. Some of the people who share their recollections are Alan Moore, the late Julius Schwartz, Roger Stern, and members of Curts family. There are also many illustrations throughout the book, including an excellent colour section with two page spreads that highlight his work on the Superboy, Superman, Legion Of Super-Heroes and Worlds Finest titles.

Many artists have worked on Superman in his various comics incarnations over the years, but Curt Swan will always be my favourite Superman artist. I'm extremely grateful to everyone involved with the production and publication of this excellent book. I can't recommend it highly enough.
