Many writers either glorify globalization or vilify it, particularly for its destructive environmental effects. In this book environmental sociologist Arthur Mol provides a more balanced understanding of the relationship between globalization and environmental quality. Mol bases his arguments on his theory of ecological modernization, which holds that although processes of modernization and globalization often result in environmental degradation, they also can encourage policies and programs designed to arrest degradation and improve environmental quality.

Building on earlier ecological modernization studies that focused on Europe, North America, and East and Southeast Asia, Mol takes here a more global perspective. He also addresses the increasing roles of nonstate actors, especially international institutions, nongovernmental organizations, popular movements, and transnational corporations.

After examining the confusion created by the failure to distinguish among globalization, global capitalism, and neoliberalism, Mol analyzes both globalization’s destructive environmental consequences and its contribution to global environmental reform. Elaborating on the subject of reform, he focuses on three case studies, one involving the economic triad of the European Union, the NAFTA region, and Japan; one involving the relationship between the triad and developing countries; and one involving three developing countries: Vietnam, the Netherlands Antilles, and Kenya.

In this era of globalization, 'transnational spaces' are being created within urban settings, providing a direct connection between the 'local' and the 'global'. Corporate headquarters, hotels, shopping malls, and airports are typical examples of such spaces, which while located within an urban territory, are often conceived by foreign designers, developers, and manufacturers, as well as maintained by multinational companies and banks. Such local-global interconnection is giving urban management a new shape, as urban management practices are now frequently intertwining with global construction and property management approaches. This paper argues that, at the same time, a set of new mechanisms that may help to tackle problems related to the urban environment and infrastructure is unfolding. Starting with a conceptual discussion of the role of globalization in urban environmental restructuring, this paper subsequently explores the context of Beijing and the environmental management possibilities introduced in this city by global actors (through the examples of World Tower, IBM Tower, and ABN AMRO and ING head offices). Beijing, due to China's recent economic opening process, provides an intriguing backcloth to demonstrate how transnational urban spaces-standing in-between the local and the global-may canalize environmental innovations from the 'global', putting globalization at work for a better urban environment.

the best book on hiking the Appalacian trail.......2006-03-17

As with most really good books, there is more to this story than just the physical journey. It is also the story of a spiritual pilgrimage. Kelly Winters is an excellent writer, and her personal journey of discovery was perfectly balanced with the other aspects of hiking the trail: the physical challenges and dangers, companionship of all kinds of very different people, and the appreciation of nature. If you are going to read one book about the Appalacian Trail, this should be the one. You will feel like you are there with her.

I wrote the following in May 2002 about this book:

"I just finished devouring "Walking Home: A Woman's Pilgrimage on the Appalachian Trail" by Kelly Winters. That doesn't sound very nice, does it? Devour is the only way I can describe the feeling I had when I was able to take a lunch break at work and read more of the book. Even though I was sitting in a relatively comfortable room, scarfing down my lunch, I could feel the pain of hunger, the ache in my joints, and the general wearyness that she described throughout the story. At the same time, I could feel a cool wind on my face, and smell the crisp scent of wet woods and dirt.

I have a friend whom I have lost touch with who is probably hiking the AT right now. At one point, I thought about going with her. In the end, I knew that thru-hiking was not my path (for now). It was good to be able to read Kelly's story and imagine what it might have been like had I gone with my friend."

The real deal.......2005-02-10

Many AT thru hikers claim that Bill Bryson's A Walk In The Woods inspired them to hike the trail. Personally I don't see how a book written by a man that hiked only small sections of the trail and didn't bond with the trail's culture could do this.
Kelly Winter's is the real deal. She hiked all the way, in one stretch from Georgia to Maine. She talks about the high points as well as the low points without sounding overly mushy or whiny - something all too common in books about thru hikes.
The opening pages about her strange boyfriend had me worried that the book would contain mostly personal stories and not much trail information. Thankfully this sidetrack was neccesarry because it told the reader where she was in her life and why she chose to hike. The rest of the book is a great description of the trail, the people and animals, and the thoughts in her head.
This is the story that should inspire people to hike the AT.

Personal Pilgrimage.......2004-08-28

The writing style of K. Winters made the book and enjoyable and easy read. The message was clear; the Trail is not an easy hike.
I was taken in to her struggles and almost feel her exhaustian and her pain, however, it was her personal pilgrimage.
There were times when I had hoped the story would take a huge emotional turn, as she related her personal journey more to the trail. Parts had me laughing and parts had me almost crying, but the parts I liked least were the [many] parts of negativity on the trail.
Over all a good read. 4-4.5 starts.
* I would reccomend "A Journey North; One Womans' Story of Hiking the Appalachian Trail" by Adrienne Hall before reading "Walking HOme". It is a mUch better journey.

Terrific Tale of Trail Travel........2004-05-06

I picked this book up at the library, expecting another mediocre hiking story akin to Bryson's book. To my delight, I found it to be a compelling read on several levels. The hiking minded will enjoy the details of life on the trail, but there is more to this book than a simple description of Point A to Point B. Winters is a helluva writer and presents a compelling portrait of her inner struggles. The best book on the AT I've read.

Diverse collection of viewpoints..........2002-02-20

This collection of articles, essays and interviews is rather diverse, with topics ranging from the longtime worldwide movement against capitalist globalization to more specific events revolving around the protests in Seattle. What I've come to appreciate most about the book is that it comes across rather critical of the movement with several essays detailing some of the shortcomings of the movement and its lack of organization amongst the different active groups, while at the same time not really taking away from their cause, hopefully lending to it by shedding light on what can be done in the future to be more successful.
