Book Description
From kangaroos and koalas to the giant Diprotodon and bizarre "thingodontans," prehistoric mammals evolved within the changing and sometimes harsh environments of Australia. As part of Gondwana, Australia was the first landmass to be isolated from the supercontinent Pangaea. In Prehistoric Mammals of Australia and New Guinea, four respected paleontologists present a history of the development of modern mammals from the unique evolutionary environment of Australia and New Guinea. The authors describe both what is known about prehistoric Australian mammals and what can be reconstructed from the fossil evidence about their appearance and behaviors.
This accessible reference work offers facts about how each mammal got its name and provides a description of how the fossil mammal resembles its modern descendants. Over 200 four-color illustrations enhance the text, which describes the age, diet, and habitat of these extinct mammals. The authors also detail how each mammal evolved and is now classified. Diagrams showing skeletal features and tooth structure and a glossary of technical terms are also included.
Customer Reviews:
Good news and bad news.......2006-09-18
The good news first: This book succeeds in the almost impossible task of being both an attractive coffee-table book and a valuable scientific reference. Within its purview, every known species is carefully and exactly defined, and the book is full of superb illustrations, not just of life reconstructions, but of the actual fossils themselves.
The book is aimed at Australians, and readers from elsewhere should familiarize themselves with the continent's living mammals (not just the famous ones) before reading it. It helps a great deal to know what a dibbler or a bettong is and does before attempting to confront their ancestors.
Which brings us to the bad news. The species descriptions focus on tooth morphology to the almost total exclusion of all other factors, and beyond the illustrations there is little attempt to deal with what these creatures actually looked like or how they behaved. Admittedly, the whole foundation of mammalian taxonomy lies in the teeth--but that is the beginning of paleontology, not the end of it. Diet, kinematics, reproduction, ecology, behavior--paleontology of late has gotten better and better at dealing with these things, but there's almost nothing of that here. Even in the relatively few cases where substantial postcranial material exists, there is no attempt made to discover the real animal that lies behind the fossils.
This seems to have extended even to the life reconstructions, which are displayed in a neutral stance and largely without expression, against the white background of the page, as if the creatures were stuffed and mounted in an exhibition hall. Yes, a carnivorous kangaroo may be shown with a dead galah at its feet--but it is not doing anything so indecorous as to actually be eating it. If the bird were removed, there would be no way of knowing it had ever been there. These spookily poker-faced creatures seem determined to convey as little as possible to the viewer--not even the fact (in every picture but one) that they are marsupials!
Because of the lack of context there is no way to judge size, with the result that all the wombat-like grazers look almost exactly alike, from the sheep-sized *Silvabestius* to hippo-sized *Diprotodon.* The minuteness of various extinct possums is conveyed much more vividly by their fossil jaws shown next to matchheads than by any of their reconstructions.
And one final cavil: more than a few of the reconstructions have been concocted out of thin air, based on nothing more than a fragmentary jawbone and a few teeth. This was a bad habit of paleontological illustration a century and a half ago, but was long ago overcome. Or so I thought. One beast is even reconstructed from a single tooth! This is just irresponsible.
Book Description
The definitive work on the multiple West Coast offense. Covers basic offensive philosophy, installing the offense, the run game, passing game, and pass protection systems, quarterback teaching progressions and passing elements, understanding defensive coverages, the wide receiver, run and passing game plays, and more. Dozens of illustrations and diagrams.

Great X's and O's Book.......2006-04-29
This book is very indepth and comprehensive. It not only diagrams plays, but it also explains the techniques and read progressions that make the plays work. It's a great book if you are looking for an offense or just looking to add to your own.
Just heard the author speak at the Irvine Mega clinic.......2004-03-02
I just heard coach Jenkins speak at the Irvine Mega Clinic and he was probably the best speaker there. I don't think he even mentioned his books, but I bought all three. His books are the best out there, bar none! I highly recommend all three of his books.
Lucky to get a copy...............2003-03-05
I was at a football clinic this past weekend and a guy comes out of one of the talks and makes the guy selling the books unpack (he had just packed up and was walking out the door). He said he needed a "West Coast Offense" book. So he opens two or three cartons and takes out "Coaching The Multiple West Coast Offense" (the second edition for what it's worth). So I decide to go ahead and get a copy for myself because it must be good? Long story short -It's the best darn book on football out there! Just a lucky timing thing and I really love the offense. We are bringing the author out to our school to install the offense..... An outstanding book that I found because of luck. It's that good........
Great book, but..........2003-01-15
Excellent, best-of-breed books on the West Coast offense, especially for those who haven't lived in the system from ground zero as a player or a coach.
HS coaches should beware...the WCO works well, BUT only if you have a stellar athlete/passer as a QB and at least one receiver w/great speed who is capable of consuming the cushion, tracking the ball, and acting as a complete deep threat. The strength of the WCO (the desired traits in the QB and WR) is also its achilles heel, in the same way as the WCO's mirror-opposite, the wishbone (you must have a dominating FB who can draw defenders at the point of attack). Given the paucity of talented QBs who are able to throw 40 - 70 yards with great accuracy consistently and WRs who demand and get consistent double coverage, it would behoove you to think twice about installing the WCO at the HS level.
If you make the mistake of pushing the WCO as a template on a HS team w/out the QB and WR, you are going to be in for a long and painful season. Defensive backs will congregate in the short zones, defensive coaches will send 6 - 7 defenders in full blitz, and if your QB isn't mobile you can count on numerous sacks, missed throwes, interceptions, or an injured QB (the shotgun, a favorite in the WCO, only delays the agony).
Good luck, and this book is as good as it gets for the HS coach seeking to implement the WCO.
I just received my copy of the second edition!.......2003-01-14
The added chapter on installing the offense made this a great book. The offense is very easy to understand, and the forward to the book explained what a great offense this is. The practice plan was very excellent, and we are going to adopt it at my school. The completed call sheet was amazing. This is the best book on offense. I am now trying to run down his books on quarterbacks and receiver play! The new chapter was well worth buying the book again...

Isaac Asimov was unquestionably one of America's greatest scientific writers--from his mind came the awe-inspiring Foundation trilogy and the classic I, Robot. It hardly comes as a surprise then, that the brain of Asimov was overflowing with facts, statistics, and millions of trivial tidbits. His Book of Facts comprises 3,000 of these little information snippets. To organize this wealth of data are distinct subject areas--ranging from chapters titled "Art" and "Medicine" to more obscure ones such as "Salty Facts" and the amusing "Strange Rules, Laws and Customs." Did you know, for instance, that the Tinguian people of the Philippines have a very unique way of kissing? They put their lips close to each other's faces, and then quickly inhale. Or that in the Middle Ages the Europeans put their disobedient animals on trial? Well, you know now! Asimov's Books of Facts immerses the reader into a humongous vat of information. Asimov feeds the brain. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
Within the pages of Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts are many hours of entertaining and informative reading—little-known facts that will make you exclaim, time and again, "I didn't know that!"
Here are some of the intriguing facts you will find in this book:
-Emperor Caligula appointed his favorite horse as a consul of Rome.
-Eskimos use refrigerators to keep food from freezing.
-For distances of up to 150 feet, an alligator can outrace a man.
-In 1896, two men rowed across the Atlantic.
-The number of possible ways of playing just the first four moves on each side in a game of chess is 318,979,564,000.
-Jimmy Carter was the first U.S. president to be born in a hospital.
Customer Reviews:
Asimov Didn't Write This.......2004-05-28
In his autobiography, "I, Asimov", Isaac makes it clear he did not write this book. It was put together by someone else, and his name was attached to it through some kind of contractual mumbo-jumbo. That being said, it is an entertaining book.
Good Facts.......2003-11-28
I am a junkie for inconsequential facts. This book is full of them, although it also has many facts that we should know and perhaps don't. My only complaint is that it's not a paperback. I can't carry it around easily and read at lunch! I recommend it for other facts junkies.
Wish it was up-dated by the publisher.......2003-04-06
I love this book, but it seems to be stuck in the early 80's. A lot has happened since that time. I think the Publisher should honor the memory of the late great Isaac Asimov by keeping the book up to date. Do that and it would earn 5 stars.
Completely crazy book. Hours of fun........2003-02-10
This book has some of the most bizarre things that I've ever read. Including the story of some medieval ruler who had the eyes of every captured enemy soldier destroyed with hot pokers. One out of 100 soldiers were spared one eye, in order to lead the blind back home.
Some of this ... I don't think is true, but all the same this is a very fun book. Great bathroom material.
A wonderful collection of facts and trivia.......2001-09-11
Despite all the comments I have read regarding the accuracy of some of this book's facts, I found this collection to be extremely engrossing and downright fascinating. I enjoy reading such compilations of trivia, and I must say that this is one of the best - if not the best - I have read for two reasons.
First, the format of the book is fantastic. The hundreds of facts, which range from one sentence to around a paragraph, are sorted by topic and presented in a brief and accessible manner by the author. The topic-sorting and compression of the countless facts enable one to read the book selectively, if desired, and they also facilitate the option of reading it all at once or gradually. Second, and more importantly, I found the selection of content to be wonderfully diverse and intriguing, as well as entertaining and even fun. In fact (if you will pardon that expression), I found so many of the entries to be worthy of remembering and future reference that I decided to mark those that struck me as particularly interesting or valuable.
I would highly recommend this collection. However, given the accuracy issues some readers have brought up, it should be read with a skeptical mind (but what book should not be read that way?).

Book Description
This vivid portrait of everyday life in the medieval Arab world draws on thirteenth-century miniatures from collections as far afield as St Petersburg and Istanbul.
The wide range of topics covers every aspect of contemporary society in the Abbasid period, from life at court to the pomp and ceremony of the military, from the dispensing of justice to the bustle of the suq and slave market. The routine of village life is contrasted with the pleasures of urban society, and we are also introduced to the world of musicians and professional mourners. Women are shown not only as virtuous wives, and in childbirth, but as spirited and articulate individuals. The traditions of Arab hospitality are described, with scenes of drinking, feasting and etiquette.
The author has illustrated her study with contemporary miniatures, principally those of al-Wasiti which accompany the celebrated Maqamat of al-Hariri. In his text, al-Hariri made no attempt to conceal his admiration for his unprincipled and thoroughly disreputable protagonist, Abu Zayd-who represents the voice of the common man and possibly provides a prototype for the popular picaresque heroes of later European literature. Al-Hariri frequently used the tales as a subtle and indirect way of satirizing the prevailing social order, yet he was insistent that his work had an underlying moral purpose.
