For careers in International Relations, World Politics, and Globalization.
Customer Reviews:
Starts off well but quickly deteriorates........2007-01-26
The opening chapters do give a reasonable introduction to the subject of International relations and there is a fairly objective account of the Vietnam War in Chapter 3, however as the book moves on to present day issues such as global terrorism and the emergence of economic blocs in the pacific and Europe you cannot help but notice an overwhelming pro-American bias. I agree with a previous reviewers comment that the subject of international relations depends on an impartial and evenhanded approach and I feel that this book fails in this respect.
Perhaps the 7th edition addresses some of the more overt opinions stated in the book, I personally would not recommend it to any teacher or student thinking of using it to teach political science or International relations.
Textbook but doesn't read like one........2006-08-15
Got this for a required college course. Found it superbly readable. The authors don't write like textbook authors. They write like reporters who like to dig deep.
If you're a news junky, get this book. If you're assigned it for college, be happy.
A good Introduction, If not a little slanted........2006-06-13
I bought this book for my JHU:CTY International Politics class. The teacher warned that it had a bit of a conservative, pro-American bias, and he most defiantly was right. However, while slightly glossed over for the sake of brevity, the book's facts are good. In terms of the political slant, it is less a mater of manipulating facts and more a case of the authors injecting their own viewpoints into the text. As long as you read the authors' conclusions with a slight grain of salt, the book remains quite useful. And towards the other reviewer: The--at least implied--assertion that if you do not agree with this book you "hate America"(which I somewhat resent), along with the concept that you will like this book if you are a conservative-leaning centrist, is quite unfounded. It really is a matter of personal preference. In my class people from all sides of the political spectrum all had varying feelings about the book, more or less independent of political affiliation.
A Good Start.......2006-03-27
The New World of International Relations is a good introductory book to the field of Political Science and International Relations. It presents information in a general and an understandably American way. It's not overbiased, but is written by Americans for American political views, general knowledge and understanding of current events, etc. It provides a good start for those who are looking for a good start into the ever-expanding knowledge base of Political Science
A good place to start........2006-01-09
What I like about this book is that it is short, it is readable, and it introduces the unitiated reader quickly and broadly to various thinkers and models of IR and does so in historical context.
I agree with the others that it definitely has some phrases which are unusual for a textbook. Random opinion, or generally unacademic phrases here and there. This is defintely a detractor, but also makes the book a bit fun.
About the perspective of the author. I personally am conservative and so I was looking for a book which would help me grasp the subject from a more conservative viewpoint than the average fare. However, I would not call it conservative, I would call the book fairly centrist. This book does viewing the world from an overtly American perspective and it also does not ignore conservative ideas such Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" model of geopolitics, but it is centrist because a true conservative for example, would give pre-eminence to Reagan's place in the cold war, this one does not.
I am not suggesting at all that if you do not like this book you "hate america" as the review below claims. There are other reasons not to like the book. However, if you do happen to be against American foreign policy, pro-UN, etc, this book will definitely upset you, as it did others below.

Enjoyable, but flawed.......2007-02-28
What's to enjoy: Wide-ranging and approachable essays on many different sciences and scientists. Willis has a light and fluent style that really pulls the reader down into the analogy between a sea urchin and a blimp, an athletic stadium and a soap bubble, and more. Along the way, the author constructs roadside memorial shrines to great thinkers who are not memorialized in the main stream of the history of ideas. A few facts in every story invite the prepared reader to search more deeply, but do so without snubbing the intelligent and interested layman.
What's not: A few maddening faults of phrase, and one profound blooper - at least, one that I caught. In one (p.22), the word "captives" appears where "captors" would have made sense. In another (p.56), the relationship between aeordynamic stalling, lift, and horizontal braking breaks. Speaking from my own skydiving and parachuting experience, "veering up" doesn't directly create the stall. Instead, the induced stall creates a tradeoff that buys upward acceleration (lower downward speed) at the cost of forward velocity - a tangible tradeoff of kinetic and potential energy. Yet another (p.114) confuses the theories and theorems of Pythagoras. The one that truly galled me, though was the assertion (p.213) that Goedel's theorem involves randomness. It does not. It pulls undecidability (or 'unreason' if you must)surgically and certainly out of the fundamental structure of reason itself, once "reason" meets certain criteria. Its inexorable, inevitable nature is what makes Goedel's theorem so profound and beautiful, not a hand-waving appeal to a roll of the dice. Willis would have us bury decidability alive under piles of probabilistic Nerf balls. Goedel's stiletto cuts to the heart of decidability in one straight stroke, and pierces it.
This book really is a rich feast for the intellect. Willis has done a good job of presenting science - strong, deep science - in a way that appeals and excites. She proves, on nearly every page, that deep science isn't necessarily obscure. The simple shape of a tree, for example, emerges from a profound set of design goals, including survival in normal kinds of exceptional winds, and including survival of another kind under even more exceptional wind loads. The few glitches (very few, I admit) just weakened all of this book's good, at least for me.

The genius of things.......1999-06-13
This book is worth every penny. In an era when we're lucky to glean one or two inspiring ideas from a book of nonfiction, Delta Willis has packed this one with dozens-- possibility space, tensegrity, morphodynamics... And the details: did you know that a fly has a three-speed gear shift for its wings? Or that the branches of an oak tree are frequently longer than the tree's height? Nature's designs are not always ideal, but they have uncanny ways of dealing with the conditions of this planet, using a great economy of means. The author introduces us in a very personal way to the researchers, inventors, and engineers who've tried to understand and/or use nature's schemes, and continue to do so. At the center of the book is the patriarch of "growth and form," D'Arcy Thompson, whose legacy is perhaps still not fully realized. His predecessors (Leonardo da Vinci, Fibonacci...) and successors (Fuller, Seilacher...) are juxtaposed more on the basis of pertinence than conventional plodding chronology. The author shows a natural playfulness, weaving her own experiences into the explanations, and allowing her personages to speak for themselves. Dolf Seilacher's words occasionally shows signs of nature experimenting on the spot.
In the spirit of her controlling metaphor, the sand dollar, Willis gives immediate delight like the flower design etched on a sand dollar's back, and deftly reveals the underlying intrigue such as the sand dollar's intricate food grooves, tube feet, and system of sand ballast under the thin etched dome.
Faced with this abundant evidence of genius in nature's designs, I found myself asking what exactly this genius could be. As Stephen Jay Gould has said, these are "paths that a sensible God would never tread." But while physical laws describe a trend to disorder (entropy), life plays with designs and moves toward greater order, as if consciousness were not an exclusive property of the brain.
This book is full of "possibility space" and it's a good read.
TRAINING A SPOTLIGHT ON TANGIBLE REALITY.......1999-02-12
Delta Willis has mastered the art of making scientific concepts easy to understand. Her celebration of our natural universe and enthusiasm for the scientists who inspire her is infectious. A joy of discovery, steeped in a sense of the absurd, makes her writing both knowledgeable and niave -- and devilishly fun. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Interesting ideas, hard to follow........1998-06-09
The book is interesting, but could use a rewrite -- I found it hard to follow the language. The logic is sound, the examples a bit obscure. Maybe there will be a revised edition. The book has a lot of valuable references.

Book Description
East Asia's rapid economic growth and the crisis of 1997 have caught the world's attention. As the Asian miracle has turned to meltdown, the critical question has become whether growth will resume. Based on research and conferences at ICSEAD in Kitakyushu, Japan, this book brings together the work of Asian economic development experts. It considers the forces behind the East Asian growth miracle, the process of growth, the effect of saving, and the effect of foreign direct investment and multinationals. Taking an optimistic view, the authors conclude that rapid growth may resume in East Asia once the crisis has been resolved. The authors argue that a growth process links East Asian countries to each other and to the industrial world, and that growth reflects a process that combines capital formation and technical and institutional change. The 1997 crisis grew out of excessively rapid boom and must be handled before growth will resume. But, the authors conclude, once the crisis has been resolved, the linked process of growth supported by appropriate policies, high levels of savings and investment, and foreign investment will allow growth to resume, although perhaps with a different geographic center of gravity.

Customer Reviews:
Great start for writing a Partnership Agreement.......2005-09-23
This book gives you an excellent foundation for writing a partnership agreement. It saves tremendously on the cost of having a lawyer write the whole agreement. We just had to use a lawyer to insure nothing was omitted.
Excellant Book, but.............2002-01-04
I read the book and found it very helpful with my plan to form a real estate parnership. I found the examples at the end of each subjet very helpful. However, it seems the authors went to a great length to demonstrate to readers that they are NOT gender biased, to the point where one would find himself sometimes cringing. Their objective could have been attained better by replacing all the He, she, him, her, with "he/she" or "him/her", and let each readers to choose the jender for themselves.
All-Encompassing Book on Partnerships.......2000-07-28
I found this title to be all-encompassing if you're considering entering into a partnership - whether it's an existing partnership or whether you're starting up a new partnership. In fact, I purchased another title on this same topic and I ended up returning it because I didn't see where it covered anything that wasn't already covered in The Partnership Book. I feel much more comfortable entering into a partnership after reading this book as I feel that I now have the necessary information to make proper decisions. I strongly urge anyone considering entering into a partnership to read this book.

Book Description
Reducing corruption should be considered a national task in Brazil. The annual cost of corruption there is estimated at R$1 trillion or about 68% of Brazil's gross domestic product. Fleischer defines corruption largely in terms of officials using their public position to extract private profits and says that today only three institutions--the press, state and federal prosecutors, and congressional investigations--are actively trying to curb corruption.

Book Description
Large fluctuations in the price of primary-in particular agricultural-commodities began to receive the attention of economists and public affairs leaders at the beginning of the twentieth century. The world economic depression of the 1930s gave a new impetus to the concerns and to proposals for countering what became known as the problem of "excessive price fluctuations," especially of commodities in international trade. Several options were investigated, including: extended agreements for the purchase and sale of commodities; buffer stock; preferably internationally managed export quotas; or various combinations of these three. After World War II, proposals for international action to alleviate the problem became widespread. Under the guidance of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), International Commodity Agreements (ICAs) were presented as a solution to the world's economic ills and problems, especially for lower income countries. Five full-fledged ICAs— for wheat, sugar, coffee, tin, and cacao — were negotiated and put into effect. In addition, international consultative discussion "groups" were established for a large number of commodities, especially under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). However, reality did not follow the promises of theory. During the 1980s every one of the five ICAs collapsed, some with devastating economic consequences. Among the ICAs, the Market Management Agreements on sugar had the longest existence, involved the largest number of countries, and were the best administered, but still did not survive. This volume, an insider's story on the negotiations and administration of the agreements on sugar, is the first detailed analysis of the rise and fall of an ICA . Viton presents a unique history of the sugar ICA and discusses the inevitable shortsightedness of long-term international economic management while contending that creating arrangements that promote international study and discussion about commodity developments and problems may be more productive in the long run.
