Book Description
Some Muslims believe insurance is unnecessary, as society should help its victims. "Insurance", however, need not be a commercial venture. In its purest sense, it is assistance with the adverse effects of inevitable afflictions, an arrangement beneficial to all. Schemes to ensure the livelihoods of traders and communities have been in existence for millennia. Commercial insurance on the other hand, was invented ostensibly for the same ends but with the chief beneficiaries being the shareholders and directors. Among the countless revelations Islam passed on, two prohibitions, namely riba (usury) and gharar (risk), have been used by legislators as grounds for the prohibition of insurance. Islam is not against making money, and there is no inherent conflict between the material and the spiritual. Islamic law allows igtehad (initiative) to the benefit of people as long as there is no harm to other people. Muslims can no longer ignore the fact that they live, trade and communicate with open global systems, and they can no longer ignore the need for banking and insurance. There is no prohibition in Islamic law against banking, nor insurance; similarly, Muslims can create insurance schemes that use their faith as the immutable basis for a working model. Aly Khorshid demonstrates how initial clerical apprehensions were overcome to create pioneering Muslim-friendly banking systems, and applies the lessons learnt to a workable insurance framework by which Muslims can compete with non-Muslims in business and have cover in daily life. The book uses relevant Quranic and Sunnah extracts, and the arguments of pro- and anti-insurance jurists to arrive at its conclusion that Muslims can enjoy the peace of mind and equity of an Islamic insurance scheme.

Customer Reviews:
Managing change in the work place.......2001-08-08
Well, if you consider what these authors have to say, and if you've read other management books, you'll see it's simply the same thing just another way of saying it! No, I returned my book ... and purchased something with substance. I was indeed very disapointed with the amateurish writing style and research ý havenýt you guy's heard of editors?
EFFECTIVEHELP ADDRESSING TOUGH BUSINESS PROBLEMS.......1999-09-10
EFFECTIVELY ADDRESSES THE HOT TOPIC IN MANAGMENT SKILLS TODAY. THE BOOK ILLUSTRATES AND EXAMINES BOTH THE NATURE OF NORMAL HUMAN RESISTANCE TO CHANGE, AND THE DYNAMICS OF THE PROBLEM SOLVING PSYCHOLOGY NECESSSARY TO OVERCOMING THAT RESISTANCE. WRITTEN IN AN EASY, AMUSING, AND INCISIVE STYLE, THE BOOKS ESPOUSES A STEP BY STEP METHODOLOGY THAT IS BOTH USEFULLY COMMPREHENSIBLE AND COMPREHENSIVE. AVOIDING ELABORATE AND PEDANTIC LANGUAGE OR SOLUTIONS, IT MAKES FOR ESSENTIAL BUSINESS READING.
Helpful management tool--with some chuckles thrown in.......1999-03-20
As the forward of the book says, no one like change--except maybe a baby with a wet diaper. This book talks about how to work with people to bring change to an organization. Sounds pretty basic, but as the reader discovers, there are all kinds of problems waiting around the corner.
This book is unusual in that it's not so much about how to chagne your employees as it is about helping them embrace change for good reasons that they already have though may not be fully aware of. (Echos of Deming's belief that workers really do want to produce quality products if they can only be enabled.)
The approach that the authors use may seem a little on the lighthearted side, but it is probably as effective a way as any for getting the points across. It's the kind of book you could safely give associates as a "light read" without making them feel that they are being lectured to.
I have read Kliem and Luden's other book, The Noah Project, and this book, while similar in some ways, is better done. All in all, it's a worthwhile contribution to the HR side of management.
Good book on a tough subject.......1999-01-27
I must admit I was a bit skeptical about how the authors would attempt to tackle aometing as complicated as managing change in only about 150 pp. I was pleasantly surprised.
Kleim and Ludin are obviously sensitive to the pitfalls, subtleties, and complexities of bringing change to an organization. What makes the book worthwhile is its approach, which is not the least bit ovebearing or pedantic. It's actually a very funny read--the kind of book you can give your managers without stultifying them and making them feel resentful.
I recommend this book.
Witty, Insightful Look at Executive Sponsoring Change.......1999-01-22
As helpful as it is funny, this book is what a 'business novel' should be. It takes a theme and characters familiar to all and spins an amusing, suspensful story about how change should and should not be introduced to the workplace. Well paced, cleverly illustrated, and with useful summary 'checklists' at the end of each chapter. I gave my boss a copy for Christmas and he really liked it.

Joe Taylor knows what it takes to breed and raise champions - both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. For 40 years, he managed the world famous Gainesway Farm in Lexington, KY. He's been associated with winners of the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Hambletonian and the Kentucky Futurity. It begins with the breeding, the care given to his sire and dam, the quality of the grass on which he grazes, the care and training received as a foal and the environment in which it is raised. Neglect any of these things and the horse will never see the winner's circle. Joe Taylor's Complete Guide to Breeding and Raising Racehorses tells you how to select the best land for your farm and design the best layout for your paddocks, pastures, buildings, roads and lanes.Taylor explains how to select the correct stallion for your mare and how to get your mares in foal and keep them that way. He tells you how to care for newborn foals, raise strong weanlings and correct yearlings, get your yearlings ready for the sales and have your horses reach their peak at sales time, plus much more.

Book Description
Art Rooney founded the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League in 1933. He, along with other pioneering owners such as George Halas, George Preston Marshall and Tim Mara, built the NFL up from a fledgling circuit that was just one step above sandlot ball into a multi-billion dollar enterprise. Unfortunately his beloved team, first known as the Pirates and then later the Steelers, would spend years as a league doormat before becoming a powerhouse. Rooney never gave up on his team. Far from being a "loveable loser," Rooney had a burning desire to win and was a fierce competitor. The ultimate sportsman, Rooney dabbled in nearly every game in his younger days. Football, baseball and boxing; both as an amateur and pro Rooney excelled at every sport in which he participated. He made his name, however, not on the playing field, but as the gentlemanly owner of the perennial loser, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Despite Rooney's great importance to the growth of the NFL and his enormously varied and entertaining interests outside the world of football, no one has yet documented his remarkable life. The story of Art Rooney reaches beyond sports into the realm of politics and the criminal underworld. A modest man, Rooney was extremely devoted to his family, friends, and faith. He cared as much for the groundskeeper as he did for the star player. Stories of his thoughtfulness and generosity are legend. It can be said that Rooney's life embodies the fulfillment of "the American Dream." Though raised in a household of modest means, Rooney bequeathed to his sons a multimillion-dollar sports empire.

Art Rooney---Steelers legend.......2006-02-14
Big Ben: 27-4 as a starter (2004-2005 seasons)---only losses (3 of which were injury-related): Patriots, 2004 AFC Championship game (if Plax holds on to sure TD pass, we are only down 7 with about 7+ minutes to go in that game; Ben did some good things and was battling thumb and toe injuries) and also in 2005 (if Randle El doesn't get `cute' and lateral that pass to Ward, we probably win; again, Ben did some good things), as well as the Bengals in 2005 (Ben has beaten Carson Palmer's Bengals 3 times: twice in 2004 and big-time in the AFC Wild-Card game in 2005; Ben had 3 TD passes in this lone defeat and was battling a thumb injury) and Indy in 2005 (as we know, he got revenge in the AFC Divisional Playoff game; Ben threw a TD pass to Ward in this Monday night defeat and was coming off an injury-induced layoff).
Ben's FIRST NFL game: 2004 Pre-season at Ford Field vs. the Lions...last game of 2005 season: 2/5/06 at FORD FIELD, SUPER BOWL XL VICTORY!!!
So Ben didn't play a superb game in Super Bowl XL and there was some controversy...
--Super Bowl IX, 1/12/75: Steelers win 16-6 over the Vikings---Future Hall-of-Famer Terry Bradshaw is only 9 for 14 for 96 yards...BEN WAS 9 FOR 21 FOR 123 YARDS...Bradshaw threw a lone TD...BEN RAN FOR A LONE TD... Future Hall-of-Famer Fran Tarkenton's numbers were putrid: 11 for 26 for 102 yards, 3 interceptions, NO TD's! We were only winning 2-0 going into the third quarter (on a safety); a boring game. The Steelers wore their white shirts and Terry had a beard (the other 3 Super Bowls: black-and-gold shirts, Terry clean shaven)...WE WORE OUR WHITE SHIRTS IN XL AND BEN HAD A BEARD...the game turned on a VERY controversial "fumble-that-wasn't" by the Steelers Larry Brown: the Steelers left the field dejected, the Vikings were in prime territory...then the officials ruled Brown was down before the ball came loose (no way!!!!!)...and the rest is history;
--Super Bowl X, 1/18/76: Steelers win 21-17 over the Cowboys---Future Hall-of-Famer Roger Staubach almost pulled out another miracle comeback...Swann's great falling-to-the-ground acrobatic catch led to no points (!);
--Super Bowl XIII, 1/21/79: Steelers win 35-31 over the Cowboys---the Cowboys' Jackie Smith drops a SURE TD pass that would have tied the game AND our go-ahead TD was aided by a very controversial tripping penalty that cost Dallas 33 yards: Lynn Swann fell over Benny Barnes's ankles and, as Bradshaw has admitted, it shouldn't have been a flag...we were ahead 35-17 at one point...Staubach almost brought them back (35-31);
--GAME BEFORE SUPERBOWL XIV: AFC Championship game vs. the Oilers, 1/6/80: Steelers win 27-13---late in the third quarter, officials ruled that Oilers receiver Mike Renfro did not have possession of what appeared to be a game-tying TD (WRONG!!!! He was in bounds; bad, bad call)...and the rest is history...
---Super Bowl XIV, 1/20/80: Steelers win 31-19 over the Rams---Bradshaw threw 3 INTERCEPTIONS and we were losing for most of the game...until Lambert saved our butts by intercepting QB Vince Ferragamo's pass...and the rest is history
(Steelers in the 1970's: regular season---99-44-1; playoffs: 14-4)
NON-STEELER SUPER BOWL "LUCK"---
Super Bowl XXV, 1/27/91: Giants defeat Bills BECAUSE SCOTT NORWOOD BARELY MISSES A RELATIVELY EASY FIELD GOAL, one of the biggest blown plays ever!;
All 3 of the Patriots victories were by exactly 3 points...and the Eagles really blew it with poor clock management (sound familiar?)!;
Super Bowl XXXIV, 1/30/00: Rams defeat Titans, 23-16--- The Rams' Mike Jones tackled Kevin Dyson at the 1-yard line as time expired. Dyson would have tied the game; Super Bowl V, 1/17/71: Colts beat Cowboys, 16-13, via a field goal... Dallas' Chuck Howley, who picked off two passes, became the first defensive player and the first player from a losing team to be named MVP.
The Steelers have been in the Super Bowl in the 1970's. 1980's, 1990's, and in the new millennium (2000's)---
IX (1975), X (1976), XIII (1979), XIV (played in 1980), XXX (played in 1996), XL (2006)
Big Ben---ONLY QB to ever go to Championship game his first two years; youngest to win the Super Bowl (Steelers: first 6th seed to go/ win; only team to beat #1, #2, and #3 seeds on the road and win; three-way tie for most Super Bowl victories: 5, along with Dallas and San Francisco; tied for second with most Super Bowl appearances: 6, along with Denver [who have `only' won 2])...comparison to other Hall-of-Fame and/or outstanding QBs---
Jim Kelly: 0 for 4; never won a Super Bowl;
Fran Tarkenton: 0 for 4; never won a Super Bowl;
Dan Marino: 0 for 1; never won a Super Bowl;
Kenny Anderson: 0 for 1; never won a Super Bowl
Len Dawson: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Johnny Unitas: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Joe Theismann: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Brett Favre: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Kurt Warner: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Ken Stabler: won one Super Bowl
Joe Namath: won one Super Bowl;
Phil Simms: won one Super Bowl;
Steve Young: won one Super Bowl;
Also: John Elway: after FIFTEEN YEARS IN THE LEAGUE, won two...after losing 3 very badly!
BEST run in sports history (as confirmed by a Congressional resolution!): won 8 in a row---
Bears (who had an 8-game winning streak), Vikings on the road (who had a 6 game winning streak...and Cowher NEVER won in a dome stadium before!), Browns on the road, and Detroit on 1/1/06 (where, unbeknownst to us at the time, we were headed for 2/5/06!); Bengals on the road (#3 seed, previously beat us), Colts on the road (#1 seed, league's best record, heavily favored, dome stadium, previously beat us; the Fumble, the Tackle, and the Miss), Broncos on the road (#2 seed, favored, 10-0 at home)...and the #1 NFC seeded Seahawks "on the road" in another dome, Detroit's Ford Field (where Big Ben started his NFL career vs. the Lions in the 2004 pre-season!!!)
YOU HAVE TO GET THE TWO-DVD SET "STEELERS: THE COMPLETE HISTORY" (2005; NFL Films), 1933-2004 (too bad they didn't wait a year haha!)---the main feature is 2 hours and 20 minutes long and covers 1933 up to and including Beg Ben's 2004 season; incredible. All the `lean years' (1930's-1960's; 1980's) are covered, NOT just the "glory seasons"---Kordell, Brister, Malone, Stoudt, Hanratty, etc. etc. etc. The bonus feautures are awesome, ESPECIALLY the 45-minute Jerome Bettis special-VERY IRONIC!! You will see Tommy Maddox with the Bus when they were both Rams in 1995...excellent miked-on-the-field comments, often funny, by Bus, Ward, and Cowher...Jan. 2005 AFC lowlights, Hines Ward crying, Jerome's reaction, and the tantalizing hint that Super Bowl XL wil be played in Jerome's hometown of Detroit...which makes what they did in 2005/2006 VERY story book! Also: the Bill Cowher, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Rocky Bleier, Myron Cope, Dick Hoak, and Bill Saul segments/ specials are very entertaining, as is the Super Bowl XIII feature..get this...as well as the SUPER BOWL XL DVD---2005 season highlights included, as well as the 2006 playoffs!
Customer Reviews:
great resource.......2007-09-19
Appreciate getting this product so fast and contiue to use it as a resource in my classroom for teaching reading.
Fabulous resource!.......2003-09-25
This book is an outstanding resource for all teachers of reading. It addresses a wide range of aspects of reading instruction, including phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and comprehension, to name just a few. For each area, the book includes several key sections: WHAT is ...?; WHY is ... important?; and HOW do you teach ...?
The layout is simple to follow, and it is packed with excellent activities. It is truly amazing how much information is included in this one book. Most importantly, the content of the book is soundly based in current research that is presented in a very accessible way. The activities are well-designed and realistic, and all the necessary information is included to be able to implement the activity in your classroom. Every teacher should have a copy of this book!
CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook.......2000-10-02
CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook is a superior book to use as a reference in the classroom. It supports all areas of reading in grades K-8. Also it has wonderful advice about ELL students. Not only does this book have information about teaching reading, but it has hands on teaching methods that are proven practices. Some of the larger areas of the book are word structure, sound/print connection, decoding, spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension, reading and responding, and differentiated instruction. CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook greatly compliments Words Their Way, another must have book. One downfall about this book is the page numbering system, but as you work from the book it becomes less difficult.
My first book was given to me from the California Reading and Literature Project and I'm buying another copy for my son, who is also a teacher. I would recommend this book to any teacher interested in improving their knowledge of teaching reading. I often review my teaching strategies with this book before finalizing my lesson plans.

Customer Reviews:
A must have.......2006-11-28
I must say, I really enjoyed this book. I love how the book displays the body in different views and in different positions. This is especially useful when you can't draw a character from a certain sitting position. For those who are a little concerned about nudity, don't worry. There is some nudity, but it's mostly the guys. I really wouldn't call it nudity though, since they do not draw the nipples on the females at all. It's merely a silhouette of the naked form. Other than that, this book is a must have. It really shows daily activities (like the book suggests)it also has some activities like karaoke. I wouldn't call that a daily activity, but that pose can come in handy if one wishes to draw a karaoke scene in their manga.
Wow..................................2005-11-24
This book is so good it's scary it teaches stuff from poses to move ment step by step so you can get it really easyly. At first I was terrible at drawing movement so every piture I drew was a charater standing but then I got this book at the libray. And now I know how to draw people jumping running and much more. Very helpful and useful it should have ten stars. Cool as it gets the person who made this book worked for Studio Ghibli!
~*~Purin~*~
A book worth your money.......2004-11-23
Ozawa does a wonderful job again! He inititally starts the book on drawing your character using perspective giving a numerous amount of pointers and examples. Then giving basic action poses (walking, running, sitting, standing, laying down, etc) and going into variations of those actions by using multiple examples of characters. A typical example page consists of a stick figure in a particular pose, a block figure, and the actual finished character in the same pose. Front and back, or other view of the pose is common and he even gives pointers and tips of details to look out for.
Besides teaching you how to draw real believable characters, this book is an excellent edition that you may later use as a reference book for poses. Like his earlier books, Ozawa covers nudity tastefully and this book can be used by young artists without fear. A book well worth the money, imo.
Another excellent book.......2004-02-27
The third book in the series picks up right after the last with perspective. The first chapter is dedicated to it, and provides many great tips. It then moves on to basic character movements such as walking, running, sitting, sleeping, and much more. From there it even goes into greater detail by showing you variations of the previously mentioned movements, and a lot of them. After all, no two people are made the same. This is a great book for any artist period who wants to learn the different poses of the body.
teaches how to draw movement.......2004-01-27
I started off drawing a book by Burne Hogarth that taught me how to draw human anatomy. It was a great book and I felt as if I could draw anything after learning how to draw the muscles and the body in general. What I learned was that I couldn't whatsoever. I would try to draw someone walking using my own logic on what a person walking should look like and I would fail miserably. This book is great for anyone who has trouble drawing a person sitting, running or doing any lifelike pose realisticly. This is the only book that I know of at the moment that teaches how to draw people that are WEARING clothes and actually doing something that people do in every day life.
