          Book Description

Ira Carmen seeks a fusion of experimental biological research and political science research as he explores the important and controversial realm of human genomics.
Politics in the Laboratory takes a close look at the ethical, legal, social, constitutional, and political implications of modern biological research. It addresses both biopolicy issues and basic science—including cloning, embryonic stem cell investigations, and experimentation involving the human germline—from the perspective of a political scientist.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well worth examining.......2005-12-29

This is an ambitious book, and one well worth reading. The effort to demonstrate the linkage of knowledge from the areas of biology and political science is a daunting task. Some may be unconvinced with Carmen's use of what he terms a constitutional approach, since it is different than standard views of this matter. Others may be put off with Carmen's dismissal of political science as a discipline. The reader will certainly know the positions that the author is taking; he is straightforward and unequivocal in his stances and some of his outspoken comments will surely not go down well with some proportion of the book's readers.

However, those who persevere and take seriously the contention that the worlds of genomics and politics cannot and should not be kept separate will find many thought-provoking arguments and new ways of looking at both human genomic research as well as the roots of human social and political behavior. In the final analysis, this is a book that will reward those who persist and read it all the way through. I recommend this book strongly.

Golf may be a sport you can enjoy from youth through AARP membership, but a 50-year-old man can't play the game the same way he did at 25. With a loss of flexibility comes a loss of power, and unless you adjust your swing, you'll lose accuracy, too. In response to the limitations that age brings, the authors of Play Better Golf have created the "S swing," a way of striking the ball accurately and powerfully with a shorter backswing. This short swing not only makes for lower and more consistent scores, it helps avoid back, shoulder, and elbow injuries caused by forcing your body to do things it is no longer able to do.

Many of the tips in the book have nothing to do with the swing. For example, golfers with arthritis in their hands are advised to wear padded weightlifting gloves instead of the standard golf glove. There's even a tip for players who wear bifocals (don't wear them on the golf course, since you'll have to change your swing to be able to see the ball; opt for distance-vision-only lenses).

Of course, much of the information--particularly the tips for chipping and putting--can be used by all golfers. But if you're the competitive sort, you might not want others (like your regular playing partners) to get their hands on this valuable guide. --Lou Schuler

                    Book Description

Specially designed for golfers over fifty, from the nation's premier golf school. From the powerhouse author team that created Play Better Golf and Play Better Golf for Women comes a comprehensive new book for the rapidly growing population of senior golfers across America. Mike Adams, known throughout the country as the "Swing Doctor," T. J. Tomasi, and Kathryn Maloney share simple, ingenious techniques for developing a swing that the senior golfer's changing body will allow. The dynamic "Senior Swing" compensates for lost strength and flexibility and allows players to "put time back into the hourglass." Throughout the book, beautiful full-color stop-action photo sequences teach proper technique and reveal the swing mechanics of the great stars of the senior tour, such as Nicklaus, Floyd, Irwin, Trevino, Stockton, and Player. Special sections discuss selecting proper equipment, dealing with joint pain and decreased vision, keeping fit as a senior golfer, and, most importantly, putting all those years of golfing experience to the best use, especially against younger opponents. Play Better Golf for Seniors shows the path to success on the course to readers of any age.

                    Book Description

PGA Professional Jim Linkin describes the changes that golfers need to make as they approach their senior years. His vast senior teaching experience enables him to clearly describe how we change, and what adjustments we need to make to play better. Since golf is such a mental game, the book starts off with some psychological aspects of a seniors game, and how important it is to be in the correct mind set to play our best and have more fun. Flexibility and hydration are discussed in depth, with a stretching program included. Next comes the senior swing itself, with basic fundamentals building a foundation for a solid senior swing. Chipping, pitching, bunker play, putting, and trick shots arm the senior golfer with the ability to score. A complete guide to how today's equipment can help the senior golfer is detailed. The section on practicing and playing has helpful tips on picking the right club and how to practice effectively. The book ends with a special ladies section describing additional changes ladies need to make to play better.

I cannot praise this book enough. Jim Linkin is truly gifted in that the vast majority of his golfing tips are straight forawrd, easily understood and capable of execution by the average golfer (I play off a 22 handiap). Golf is now just that bit more enjoyable. I hope he will write more!

This adaptation of what is recognized today as the oldest Mongolian text (written two decades after Chingis Khan`s death) tells the Mongols` own version of the origin of their nation, the life of Chingis Khan, and the creation of an empire that stretched across Eurasia in the 13th century. Adapted from Francis Woodman Cleaves` erudite translation, it is presented here as a narrative poem in colloquial English. An overview of medieval Asia, maps, lineage charts, a glossary of proper names, and a bibliography are included. This expanded edition includes a 17th-century account of Chingis Khan`s death and a new essay by the author.

                      5 out of 5 stars Lao's review.......2001-02-27

The Secret History is a record of the Mongolian Royal families, which is thought to have been written during the thirteenth century. Paul Kahn has kept the original prose format in his translation, which I feel makes this the only version to own. It begins with the creation myth of the wolf and deer from which the Mongolian people (in legend) are descended from; throught he birth of Temujin, and ending with the ascention to the throne of Ogedai Khan. I highly recommend this to those who are looking for primary sources to add to their Asian history collections.

4 out of 5 stars Read! And feel Mongol history and Chingis Khan........2000-04-04

The Secret History of the Mongols is one of the most important primary source for study of Mongol history and Chingis Khan. Also, this book is very impressive poet like Homor's great works. I know Francis Woodman Cleaves has already translated it into English. He is great master of Mongol history, however, his "King James English" is terrible, especially foreigners like me. Paul Khan's work overcomes this big problem. The easy and spoken English let everyone enjoy it. Now, read it, enjoy it, and feel the "World Conqueror"

                        Book Description

The first edition of The Animation Book, published in 1979, became the authoritative guide to making animated movies. Now, as we enter the twenty-first century, the explosion in computer technology has created a corresponding boom in animation. Using desktop hardware and software, animators can easily produce high-quality, high-artistry animation and mix the aesthetics of traditional cel animation with dazzling 3-D effects. Kit Laybourne's digital revision to The Animation Book brings you to the cutting edge of animation technology. Richly illustrated with frame-grabs, production stills, and diagrams, this volume shares Kit's infectious enthusiasm for the limitless possibilities of today's hybrid techniques, and it provides beginning animators with all the information they need to jump in and start their own animation projects. More advanced animators will find The Animation Book to be an invaluable resource with detailed descriptions of filmmaking gear, computer hardware and software, art supplies, plus Internet and other resources.

Using an innovative case-study approach, Kit deconstructs how a range of digital projects were carried out at some of today's hottest animation studios, including Wildbrain, Blue Sky, Protozoa, Fantome, Broderbund, Nicktoons, and Klasky Csupo. These step-by-step studies show how desktop animators can follow the same creative process in their own films.

                        5 out of 5 stars Perfect Reference.......2007-08-02

If there was ever a 'textbook' for learning animation, this is it. I have several books on animation production, from cell to 3D, and this on the pretty much the backbone of them all. I am not a professional animator, though I wish I was. This book provides a plethora of reference films for various styles of animation (it's nice to have a somewhat comprehensive list of styles) and suggestions for production. Though, it does lean more towards the artistry of animation, rather than digital production techniques to turn a quick buck.

I recommend this book as a primer for anyone who is passionate about animation as an art, hobby, or the first step in building an animation production house from scratch.

5 out of 5 stars I Really Need to get the New Edition..........2006-01-06

I just about wore out my copy of the original edition of this book years ago; i never got far into *doing* animation, but it really helped me to *understand* what i was seeing on the screen (as well as serving as a source of recommendations as to Good Things to look out for...)

While this may not be quite the essential text for asiring animators that Will Eisner's "Comics and Sequential Art" (q.v.) is for would-be comics pros, it is a Very Good overview of the field as a whole, from techniques to materials to the creative aspects.

There is, admittedly, not sufficient detail on any one subject to take one to a true professional level, but there is sufficient detail and commentary to let the tyro make a beginning in almost any aspect of animation (within one's financial limitations, anyway -- while costs are rather less now than they were in the day when film was the sole practical medium of choice, some aspects of animation do cost more than others to do) nd work at it enough to get an idea as to whether that's what she wants to do.

And remember -- you might not intend to make animation your life's work; but Mike Jittlov was an accounting major who took an animation course because he needed an elective and it fit his schedule. The film he made for that course won him an Oscar nomination...

Anything can happen, and this book is a good place to check it out if you think animation might be one of the "anythings" you'd like to happen to you.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT INTRODUCTION TO ANIMATION TECHNIQUES.......2004-09-16

This is a great book for both students of animation and anyone out there who just wants to know more about that thing called animation. Laybourne is very easy to read and goes step-by-step through various animation processes in such an accessible way that its almost entertaining.

If you have a serious interest or just a passing interest, this is a great book!

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Animation.......2003-11-04

I am using this book for background info for an animation unit I teach with my graphics students. It gives you a good overview of many different animation techniques. It answered a lot of my questions. This book is a good start, but you might also want to check out animation by preston blair, and Animation from script to screen by Shamus Culhane. Shamus will make an animator out of you by the end of his book.

3 out of 5 stars Very general, not enough updated info.......2002-11-07

Although it is almost impossible for a book to provide the most up-to-date info, this book tries it's best. I really think that an animation book should be specified (ie 2d, stop-motion, 3d, etc) in order to not "cheat" the reader out of more intense knowledge. However, if a broad introduction is what you seek, then this book will work (but there are less expensive books that will do just the same).

I live in Japan and I am here to tell you that these proverbs are rarer than an uncooked steak. 80% of the proverbs my Japanese friends have never heard of, and the rest they are not sure what the proverbs actual mean. My advice is master the easier Japanese first!

                        5 out of 5 stars Another Opinion.......2003-12-20

I just finished going through this book, and I enjoyed it very much. Today I read the other reviews, and I can understand their opinions, but think another perspective should be added. I'm sure my Japanese is not nearly as good as the other reviewer, and I don't live in Japan. Still, here is my opinion.

Translations are difficult in any language. Working on some very simple translations I found them most challenging. For example, the word Kobunboku I translated as Plum Blossom. If you translate the Kanji singularly and literally it would be Nice Prefered Wood. But if you understand the symbolic compounds it reads "The famous tree of Chinese literature" the flower of peace, the plum blossom. Most Japanese people would not recognize this literary compound. In reality no translation is perfect. In the version of one of these proverbs I have: "Fallen blossoms don't return to the branch. . ." It includes: "There is no sense in crying over spilt milk."

As far as testing them on Japanese friends, and average Japanese people having not heard them. . .would this be less common with English idioms? The South has many idioms people in the North have never heard. "He's drunker than Cooter Brown" "Penny wise, Pound foolish" I never heard till I was 40.

I would add I don't think it is a good idea to try and use these proverbs to impress Japanese speakers. Contrivance is rarely respected.

I greatly appreciated the author including the Kanji, Romanji, Hiragana, and English, and I think the book is helpful and a lot of fun to read with some nice thoughts to reflect on their wisdom.

PS: The title "IS" Even Monkeys Fall From Trees :)

3 out of 5 stars Not sure about this one..........2001-03-03

I'd like to point out before I get into the meat of this review that I am not out to give the writer, sorry "compiler" a damn good ragging, but I am not at all sure this book is as good as you may have been led to believe by the reviewer before me. OK, first, the positive points. There are many well known proverbs in this book that will be useful to anyone who is interested and each proverb is illustrated by a cartoon. So far, so good. However, I have found that a couple of these proverbs are unknown to my Japanese collegues who doubt their authenticity. For example, one of the proverbs that I liked when I first saw it is "Ke bukai mono wa iro bukai". The translation being "A hairy thing is a sexy thing". Well, if you know anything about Japanese culture and attitudes and believe me, I do! I work and live in Japan and I speak Japanese and know a lot of Japanese people, then you will know that body hair is considered to be dirty and repulsive. So how can there be a proverb like that? It stands to reason! Another example of an "unknown" proverb is "He o hitte shiri tsubome" which is supposedly a Japanese version of "It's no use closing the stable doors after the horse has bolted". The Japanese version translates as "It's no use scrunching up you buttocks after you have farted". This is more or less how it is translated in the book. It is an appropriate image, however no one has heard of that either! It is a proverb I like to use from time tio time in English but when I tested out the Japanese equivalent amongst friends, they just thought I was being rude. In fact the word "he" is a coarse word to use in Japanese. "Onara" is more aceptable, well, about as acceptable as talking about farts can be!!! When I have to explain a Japanese proverb to a Japanese person, I can only conclude that the proverb is erroneous to start with. I don't think this is a reliable book. If you get it then check out which proverbs are authentic with a native speaker so you don't end up looking stupid or intentionally rude.

5 out of 5 stars Domo arigato, David-san........2000-08-04

An uncle of mine passed away when I was only about ten. We were very close- even today, my mother and my aunts and uncles tell me how much I remind them of him. Two things immediately pop into mind when I remember my Uncle John- first, he was something of an oddball. And second, he had a passion for languages. Uncle John could speak just about any language you could name. He was particularly fond of Japanese, and I remember him reading to me from "Even Monkeys Fall From Trees." When he passed away, I inherited his copy, and it is to this day my most treasured possession.

What of the book, then? It is really quite simple- it is a collection of 100 Japanese sayings, written both in phonetic Japanese and with an English equivalent (Example- moshi wa moshiya- "for rice cakes, go to the rice cake maker"). Opposite each proverb is a full-page illustration, with the proverb written in Japanese calligraphy. A short preface by the author is included on the significance of the proverbs in Japanese culture, and a short appendix is also included which attempts to find an equivalent adage from our culture for each proverb.

This book is a rich source of inspiration, and I have continually found new meaning in the sayings contained within. The simplicity of its design affords a certain elegance, as it presents the proverbs in a manner which stimulates the reader to find his own wisdom in them. The illustrations are clever and appropriate, and yet do not force a specific interpretation.

This book would make a fine gift for anybody, especially a child, as it is the rare sort of book that one does not merely read, but rather grows with, like a close friend. Whether you're looking for an interesting way to learn some new Japanese, or merely searching for insight, BUY THIS BOOK.

                          Book Description

East Asia is the most competitive and dynamic industrial region in the developing world. This is universally acknowledged but not yet fully understood. In particular, the different strategies the `Tiger' economies used to access and absorb foreign technologies, and the interaction of technology imports with domestic technological effort, have not been sufficiently explored.

This book addresses this imbalance with new country studies on the interaction between foreign direct investment (FDI) and technological activity in building export competitiveness. The book covers China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, highlighting different strategic approaches to building capabilities in industrial enterprises. The book also includes a general overview and studies of Japanese multinationals overseas.

Those interested in the critical role that technologies can play in promoting economic growth and competitiveness will find this study of great interest, especially academics and those in governments and agencies engaged in economic development policy.

                                Book Description

This selection of papers and commentary drawn from a September 1998 conference held at Michigan State University, examines in detail the CanadaUnited States Free Trade Agreement. Among its many contributions, the work underscores how this pact paved the way for the North American Free Trade Agreement. The work also includes essays written by Canadian and American policy makers, including Derek Burney and James Baker, III; these are augmented by a series of insightful papers and commentary written by scholars and informed observers. Roger Porter, from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, summarizes and places the CanadaUnited States Free Trade Agreement into a framework for the future, one that includes trade agreements with other countries in the Western Hemisphere. In light of the recently concluded World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle, this analysis of Canada's bilateral trade agreement with the United States is timely and thought provoking.
