Book Description
In a bold attempt to develop an innovative theory of political change arising from dual economic and political transformations, Iheduru maintains that economic structural adjustment policies have unintended political consequences, leading to democratic liberalization in post-colonial African states. Using classical, dependency, and neoliberal approaches as a backdrop, he demonstrates that structural adjustment policies shaped by conditionality measures foster the operation of free-enterprise market forces. As a social consequence of the reform effort, winners and losers organize to protect their interests, first in the economy and later in the political arena. Thus the structural reorientation of African economies leads not only to the ascendancy of the market and economic growth but also to the political opening of the African state, thereby facilitating the participation of excluded groups. In conclusion, Iheduru predicts that structural adjustment is the best policy alternative for initiating and sustaining meaningful economic changes in Africa. Moreover, he claims, it may be a deciding factor in the possible democratizing of the African continent, which would provide an auspicious atmosphere for a properly functioning market economy.

Fish ID "Bible".......2007-08-31
At one time I was the head of a volunteer organization in WPB, Florida that assisted Palm Beach County with their artifical reef program. Part of the qualification was to get training in a variety of related subjects (like fish identification) sponsored by the Florida Oceanographic Society. This book served as our fish identification "bible." I no longer live in FL, but when I go diving in the Caribbean I stil take this book with me. If you need to (or just want to) know the fish of the Caribbean, buy this book.

I bought this item for my trip to the Caribbean. I'm a marine biologist by training, and I loved this book because it gave information above and beyond just identification. It also tells you how likely it was that the fish you saw was the one pictured in the book. Then there are lists of all the species in the back, with space for you to record when and where you saw it. I had so much fun combing this book after snorkeling to identify all the organisms I had seen! What a great investment!
Best Fish Book I Have Found.......2007-07-13
This book is a must buy for any diver who has moved beyond the "Oooh look at the pretty fishes" stage. If you want to know what you are looking at, use this book. It is an excellent companion to PADI's AWARE Fish Identification Specialty, and makes it easy to look up fish when you surface.

Hello my name is Keazia and I thought that the book grooper moon was a good book because the author Synthia Shaw gave her readers (you) the feling that Renny had while he was in the reef and you feal like you are in the reaf encountering all the beauty right there with him in the reef.
Renny is the main charecter. He loves the sea and the liveing animals in the sea.
the story starts out on a beautiful christmas morning in coconut cove, where Renn lives over looking the sea.
During the story I felt happy, and consurnd abought what was going to happen to the Grooprs.
The story made me realise how easly resources can run out and if they do how bad it can be for the inverment.
I thought that the book grooper moon is like the book Hoot, they are both trying to save animals and consurve nature.
I liked that Renny was able to shair his reef with other people so everybody can experence the buty of the reef.
I think that anyone who likes enviromental books or wood like to read books abought animals would like to read the book Grooper Moon.

Grouper Moon Book Report.......2006-04-21
I read the book Grouper Moon, and I thought it was a pretty good book. The two main characters were Cooper the Nassau Grouper, and Renny Thomas a boy. The story takes place on a tropical island in the Caribbean, called Macquerupa. The story starts out on Christmas when Renny gets a new pair of fins. He was a fish and water-loving boy, so he went straight to the reef to try them out.
When Renny goes swimming he finds a magical reef with a grotto past the drop-off. In this grotto he can talk to fish and he does not have to breath. This is where he meets Cooper. They become friends immediately. When Renny hears that grouper moon is coming up, a time when all the groupers gather together and spawn he is excited. His feelings soon change when he hears what bad condition the groupers are in. His feeling gets worse when he finds out that almost all the fishermen on the island are going to set traps to catch these good tasting fish. How will the story end up? Read the book to find out!
I think you should read this book because it is a page-turner. You never know what is going to happen next. This book also has a mysterious but happy ending that I liked a lot. I loved most of the characters and the plot of this book. Though it didn't focus enough on Renny and some of the other human characters. A reader who likes magical places and talking fish would love this book.

Fascinating but dated look at underwater life........2004-04-26
Originally published in 1955, The Coast of Coral is an account of Arthur C. Clarke's exploration of the Great Barrier Reef off the eastern coast of Australia. He describes the large variety of coral found during his many dives there, along with fish and other inhabitants of the reef, including several shark encounters, all accompanied by sixteen pages of B&W photos. The book is somewhat of a look into the past, as much of the reef has now been destroyed by careless tourists, some fishing methods, pollution, and the more natural ravages of weather. Also dated is activity like eating sea turtle eggs, and walking on the reef, which the author retracts in his recently written introduction. Clarke touches on Australian culture and there are several chapters on pearl diving. Unfortunately there are a few typos, seemingly common in ibooks publications. An example from page 32 shows editors can't just rely on spellcheckers: "...if the hark did appear, I was chiefly anxious to get him in the game picture as Mike..." While the reader should be able to determine what is meant, these errors are irritating and could easily have been eliminated with better proofreading.

I`m a biologist student and think that it has an old but really good information. And its an excellent book for all the people that its interested to start learnig enthomology, this book its practically the base for insect study.

This text is incredibly useful for its many drawings and for providing the vocabulary of this subject. Useful for anyone who is really interested in insect structure and function.
This book has great diagrams!.......2000-02-14
If you are interested in learning about insect morphology, this is the book to have. Snodgrass's illustrations are used in most of the current books on insects, so he is the first source. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to learn about how insects are designed and how they function.

I bought this phrase book for a recent trip to Portugal.
It was EXTREMELY handy: Primarily because of how well it is organized! There are sections for basic expressions, making friends, getting around, shopping, dining, and an A-Z index in the back of the book. I was amzaed how much information could be crammed into such a small book! It had just about every key phrase I ever needed on my trip. And - unlike Spanish - in Portuguese, "what you see is not always what you say". For this reason, the pronunciation guide for each phrase was a life saver!

The book is very easy to use with excellent content. It is arranged by topic in color-coded sections. It has useful commentary and hints like you might find in a travel book. The dictionaries are minimal - only 44 pages for both. If you want to look up Portuguese words you'll need a separate dictionary.

Error in signatures!.......2007-05-09
Well, this was useless to me because it was printed incorrectly. The signatures (sections of the book) were out of sequence when it went to press. Thus, the pages are out of order and, therefore, it was difficult to use as a reference.

Decent Woordenboek but lacking..........2005-02-12
A Dutch friend of mine from Amsterdam sent me this book as a little gift for Christmas, to aid me along in my study of the Dutch language. A Van Dale it isn't. But then, one usually doesn't lug around an $80 Van Dale on their trips around Amsterdam, do they?
So this dictionary does its job as a quick little reference. However, Langenscheidt really perfected the class of small dictionaries. My little Langenscheidt Deutsch-Englisch/English-German Wörterbuch contains far more information in a much smaller package.
My biggest grievence with this dictionary is the supposed help it gives to English speakers with pronunciations of Dutch words. It's absolutely abysmal in some respects. I don't know if they were basing it on dialect or what, but, for example, if you pronounced "koninklijk" (royal) the way they transcribe "koan-ing-klerk" you would be far off. So it definitely lost some ground here. Otherwise it's decent.
I would try and find a Prisma, as they're far superior, popular with the Dutch themselves, and not that expensive. Bottom line, you get what you pay for, and I think had I actually paid for this I wouldn't have been disappointed, but it still remains in my eyes only average.

Since most Dutch speak English, I mainly wanted this book to interpret restaurant menus. It's not very helpful, even with the separate food section. For example, one thing you see all over Amsterdam is "broodjes." The dictionary definition is "roll; bun." That's true, but when you see this in a window, they're talking about sandwiches.

Oops, I'd like to correct my earlier review-submittal.......2003-11-17
It was the Rough Guide Dutch dictionary and phrasebook I bought to replace the Berlitz phrasebook, not the Lonely Planet.
Lacks Dutch-to-English dictionary.......2003-11-17
I bought what is perhaps an earlier edition of this phrasebook via Amazon, used; it arrived promptly in fine condition. However, as we tried to use the book in Amsterdam, its lack of a Dutch-to-English dictionary was revealed as a serious flaw (there is an English-to-Dutch dictionary). We subsequently bought the Lonely Planet Dutch phrasebook and dictionary, which did have a Dutch-to-English dictionary as well as an English-to-Dutch dictionary. We needed Dutch-to-English mostly for signs; everyone in Amsterdam seems to speak English pretty well!
