Thorough, honest, and well executed..........2003-09-08
Bob has a great talent for simplifying the complex, a hard-to-find talent amongst consultants. His proven record and examples are a rare find among business books. Take a look around the business topics here on Amazon.com and you'll find many books written by leaders who eventually stomped their companies and/or their employees into the ground. OR - you'll find books written in theory, but never delivered on in an actual business.
Bob's refreshing book shows his experience, knowledge of the complex balance of employee leadership, intellectual talent, knowledge management, systems, and process management. Being good at any ONE thing may get you to the top... but you need to know how to balance all to keep there. Bob understands this.
This book will save you time and expense. For once, a book with a Return on Investment!

Made MY Customer's happy!.......2003-07-29
This book is it!
This book should be called "How to please your customer and save money while doing it."
After reading the first three chapters, I decided to put the material to the test and begin some of the work suggested in the book. The results were nothing short of amazing. Using the pre-made templates, and what I learned on building an effective organization, I was quickly able to make small changes within my organization that had HUGE impacts.
Our customer satisfaction ratings went up by over 25% in a MONTH, and we've saved enough money to hire new people. Not bad for an economy that is suffering so badly, I'd say.
I also like Robert's writing style. It's easy to read, and it is assuring to know that there is a "real person" behind this work, whose faced similar business problems and found a way to overcome them.
I'll also mention that we considering hiring a Six Sigma consultant and narrowly averted the disaster that surely would have followed. Six Sigma sounds like a good way for improving a business UNTIL you read this book. Now that I understand what Six Sigma REALLY is, I won't even consider them in the future or other consultants that can't explain to me what it is that they are going to deliver for my business.
This is my kind of book. Easy to understand, practical to use, and results right away. I highly recommend it.
A GREAT Reference For Everyone in Business.......2003-07-19
This book teaches you just how to do that. It showed me how to make the most of the assets within my company that I would never have even thought of, or even considered an "asset" per se, to help my work group to make up for the people that we've lost due to layoffs and "rightsizing."
I would never have guessed that some of these simple suggestions and techniques would have such a large impact on my business.
I also really enjoyed Robert's writing style . It's an easy read, and not like other similar books I've read that seem more like a Ph.D. thesis. His book is direct, to the point and I really like that examples and templates are included for all of the work.
This is "not your father's managment book". There are no punches pulled, and I LOVE the stories that he uses to explain his point (the story of Margaret and Mary alone, is worth the price of the book) FUNNY! I can't believe that this actually happened!!
One other thing that really drew me to the book was the part about the New Jersey Devil Consultant. My company has had many consultants in and out of here for over two years, and they never seem to do any good. Now I know why. I'll never look at another "six sigma" consultant or any other, the same way again. I now know how to spot a good consultant who will actually do some good, versus one that is only going to rip us off and will be sure to quiz them on HOW they do their work, not just how much they are going to cost us.
I HIGHLY recommend this book for ANYONE in business. I'm not even convinced that we NEED consultants anymore. Me and my team can do this work ourselves!

Evolution: Facts and Fallacies
Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0126288607 |
Book Description
The proceedings of the March 1997 symposium on Evolution! Facts and Fallacies are published in this short, accessible, and profusely-illustrated text. When Darwin originated his concept of descent with modification by means of natural selection, evolution became the instant focus of uncertainty and debate. In Evolution! noted experts sort facts from fallacies by answering questions most often asked of Darwin's grand theory. Interwoven throughout is the broad theme of how science is done and the answer to the most crucial question of all: How can we be sure that science will uncover the truth? Contributors are key experts on evolution and extraterrestrial life. Written at an easily understandable level, this book is accessible as well as entertaining to the general reader, high school, and college student.Customer Reviews:
The cure to scientific illiteracy?.......2001-09-08
The book's mission is to counter the scientific illiteracy, as perceived by its authors, of the American public as well as the rest of the world. It sets out some very sound scientific principles (p79). Unfortunately the authors themselves have generally failed to adhere to them. Science is equated with evolution, and evolution is treated as a premise throughout. The treatment of the subject is superficial, arguments are oversimplified, difficulties are glossed over, and the wool is pulled over readers' eyes. For example, an evolutionary tree of hominids is presented unquestionably as fact, including H. habilis which is not even accepted as a valid taxon by some evolutionist authorities. Nothing is said to alert readers to the pitfalls surrounding theories of human origin. In his book "Bones of Contention", Roger Lewin wrote: 'In fact, "virtually all our theories about human origins were relatively unconstrained by fossil data," observes David Pilbeam. "The theories are ... fossil-free or in some cases even fossil-proof."
It is claimed that "evolution tells us that all living (and extinct) species did indeed evolve from earlier ancestral species" (p43). Quite apart from the tautology and question begging inherent in the statement, the book offers no empirical evidence for evolution. According to Alan Linton (Emeritus Professor of Bacteriology & former Head of Dept. of Microbiology, University of Bristol, UK), "None exists in the literature claiming that one species has been shown to evolve into another. Bacteria, the simplest form of independent life, are ideal for this kind of study, with generation times of 20 to 30 minutes, and populations achieved after 18 hours. But throughout 150 years of the science of bacteriology, there is no evidence that one species of bacteria has changed into another, in spite of the fact that populations have been exposed to potent chemical and physical mutagens and that, uniquely, bacteria possess extrachromosomal, transmissible plasmids. Since there is no evidence for species changes between the simplest forms of unicellular life, it is not surprising that there is no evidence for evolution from prokaryotic to eukaryotic cells, let alone throughout the whole array of higher multicellular organisms." (book review in The Times Higher Educational Supplement, 20 Apr 01).
Evolutionists frequently portray creationists as scientifically illiterate, and this book adopts the same attitude. But according to Prof. Linton, "They include leading research scientists, past and present, who find the theory of evolution to be scientifically untenable".
I am totally sympathetic to the concern expressed in chapter 4 over the shoddy treatment of science by the mass media, but I also find it ironic that the book laments the lack of critical thinking among the lay public. The fact is that many evolutionist popularisers are not at all interested in critical thinking on the part of their readers. Instead of presenting an accurate, balanced account to their readers so that they can critically evaluate the evidence for and against, and make up their own minds, evolutionist authors are far more concerned to get their readers to believe evolution. This book is no exception, and it is not the answer to making America, and the rest of the world, more scientifically literate.
Typical Rationalism-Equals-Science Spiel.......2000-04-06
Excellent.......2000-01-18
The first paper is by Stephen Gould who is always trotted out by Creationists as someone who doesn't believe in Darwinism ( but punctuated equilibrium ). Wrong ! While Mr. Gould is a proponent of punc ek, he still agrees with Darwinism as his paper makes clear.
A useful way to look at evolution is to divide it into 3 categories: the fact of evolution, the path of evolution and the process of evolution. As Mr. Gould makes clear, the fact of evolution cannot be doubted by any sane person. As he also makes clear in his paper, the path of evolution is random. It is directionless. That is, we did not have to evolve. Mr. Gould's twist is on the process of evolution. He presented punc ek as an enhancement to Darwinism. He felt that Darwinism was incomplete. The Cambrian explosion is an example of evolution that appears to have taken place quickly. He presents punc ek as an explanation. Punc ek is still debated largely because it is not really a theory but more a description.
The papers on dating methods and missing links in the fossil record are good as well.
I recommend the book for new comers who are interested in the specific issues discussed.
For more exhaustive and complete books on evolution, I would look instead to *Evolution*, by Mark Ridley or the new edition of *Evolutionary Biology* by Douglas Futuyma. Some other books to consider that examine creationism and find it wanting: 1)Darwin's Dangerous Idea - Daniel Dennet 2)Tower of Babel - The Evidence Against the New Creationism - Robert Pennock 3)Evolution and the Myth of Creationism - A Basic Guide to the Facts in the Evolution Debate - Tim Berra 4) Science on Trial - The Case for Evolution - Douglas Futyma 5) Darwinism Defended - Michael Ruse 6) Taking Darwin Seriously - Michael Ruse 7) The Blind Watchmaker - Richard Dawkins
There are so many more, but this is a good start.
Besides quantum mechanics, the theory of evolution is the most widely tested and substantiated theory in science. It's a tragedy that more people aren't aware of this. Maybe they don't care for the implications. But: there is a way the world is that is independent of our thoughts and wishes!

Camp 4: Recollections of a Yosemite Rockclimber
Steve Roper Manufacturer: Mountaineers Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Book Description
In the 1960s, California's Yosemite Valley was the center of the rock-climbing universe, spawning many of the finest rock climbers in the world and shaping the future of the sport. Camp 4 is Roper's take on his ten years spent in the valley among the era's top climbers.Customer Reviews:
How It All Began.......2002-12-20
The Golden Age of the '60s, of which Steve was a part, was a time of great improvements in equipment and methods, and also a first crack at some of the awesome spires that were heretofore thought "impossible." It was wild, giddy and reckless, adjectives I would never apply to Steve Roper. Mr. Roper is austere in his beliefs of the "purity" of the climb and who is worthy. Though he recounts a few wild escapades, I had the feeling he did not approve. His callousness toward the first Camp 4 fatality made me back up and reread. Yep, I read it right, though I'm sure he was trying to keep up the "Right Stuff" façade in the face of what must have been a great shock to an 18-year old boy. That is the problem; there are so few that Roper considers to have the Right Stuff. If they were women, they were mere appendages. If male and had the misfortune to be born after 1955, they were not pure enough.
John Long's "Rock Jocks, Wall Rats and Hang Dogs" is devoted to Camp 4 in the '70s. John is Steve's polar opposite except in their mutual love for and expertise in rock climbing. John is wildly funny and sometimes just wild, but I had more a feeling of place when reading his book.
As another reviewer said, "Camp 4" is a must-have for West Coast rock enthusiasts. It is considered the Bible of the Golden Age.

Enthralling and Exact.......2002-08-01
The only criticism I have is that the book ends. I could have kept reading for many more days. If you want to FEEL what it was like, buy this book. I will bet you can't read it only once.
The Golden Era!!!.......2001-12-07
A fine history of an extraordinary time and place.......2000-01-11
Since he knew, and climbed with, many of the pioneers of modern free and aid climbing, this book is often more valuable as a source of anecdote than as a more detached "history". Taken as such, though, it is well-written and entertaining.
Camp 4.......1999-12-11
However, I found Roper's moralism, his unremitting attempts to make climbing Meaningful and to extol those climbers whom he feels are somehow Pure, tiresome. There are both gods and devils in Roper's version of the Valley, and he gets pretty bitchy when he talks about the devils.
It's the canonical Valley history, though, so read it anyway.
