We wonder what inducements prompted Ford and Congress to let themselves be talked into financing the vaccine and paying the ensuing damage costs. Much research focuses on the question of how information is processed in nervous systems, from the level of individual ionic channels to large-scale neuronal networks, and from "simple" animals such as sea slugs and flies to cats and primates. New interdisciplinary methodologies combine a bottom-up experimental methodology with the more top-down-driven computational and modeling approach. This book serves as a handbook of computational methods and techniques for modeling the functional properties of single and groups of nerve cells.

The contributors highlight several key trends: (1) the tightening link between analytical/numerical models and the associated experimental data, (2) the broadening of modeling methods, at both the subcellular level and the level of large neuronal networks that incorporate real biophysical properties of neurons as well as the statistical properties of spike trains, and (3) the organization of the data gained by physical emulation of the nervous system components through the use of very large scale circuit integration (VLSI) technology.

The field of neuroscience has grown dramatically since the first edition of this book was published nine years ago. Half of the chapters of the second edition are completely new; the remaining ones have all been thoroughly revised. Computational Modeling.......2004-06-11

Great book for the theorist and experimentalist! I used the section on Epilepsy and the Neural Code for a grant I wrote. This book is a great reference and time spent reading it is very well rewarded. I bought the 1st & 2nd editions which are very different. Both editions are worth buying if one is involved with computer modeling, computation, mathematics, and plain old fashion recording neurophysiology.

How do you write a review by multiple authors who are authorities in the respective fields of each chapter? Carefully. Does the review need to contain the usual metaphors which when finally finished leave a prospective researcher with feelings of Oprah's book store. No. So let's start. The book contains general overall experimental setups on the "dry" sort, giving the broad over all design or outline of the direction of the model (read calculations) then includes the formulas at the end each chapter. Extremely nice for incorporation into MathCad or Matlab. (this is not as simple as it sounds, moving a high verbage book into something meaningful on a computer can't always be with as much style and grace as one wants). Most of the models however are, for want of a better discripter, "realistic".I guess this means they are not movies. Whether a model is done using ionic balanced equations or transfer functions seems somewhat academic to me as long as the information gained is useful. The level at which one can "view" these models certainly depends on the math and assets one can throw at the problem. As an example without to much "sweat" most of the cable equations, represented either as diffusion or electrical can be simulated far better in Matlabs PDE toolbox using Finite Element Methods. This allows the model to be viewed from the same point of view at different aspects. And why some kind of transfer functions cannot be made, and used in classical control theory, I'm working on now. Most of the equations using standard algebraic formulas work better in Mathcad using iterative range variables in extinction type modeling. This allows for the injection of pharmalogical testing data based on frequency manipulation, along digital signal processing lines. And running out of room, why not just take the data, use it to train a neural net and then use a Segueno fuzzy inference system to solve for the equations of state, which works very well for large systems (heart)such as the McKay-Glass non-linear types?

If you are a true fan of Ohio State or Michigan, this book is a must have and a very good read. Unbelievable attention to detail in this book as the author really got inside each and every game in the 10 year war. I have been to THE GAME in person 3 times and the intensity of the crowd and teams exhibited today was all set up by the great rivalry of the 70's between Bo and Woody.

This bilingual dictionary's two greatest virtues are its compact yet readable format and its affordable price. And, as a bonus, there are brief grammatical summaries and lists of irregular verbs. These reminders are packaged with the two-way translations for convenience, never meant as a substitute for an exhaustive reference.

This meets my limited needs, as someone who comes across the occasional French word in passing. Most high school language students will also find that it has all the vocabulary they need. This isn't a scholar's reference, though. Translated definitions tend towards the terse, so they won't cover all usages of a term. And, to keep cost down, it's printed on pulp stock, so it won't last forever even if handled gently. It offers plenty if you don't need much, and that's good enough for me right now.

This is a very usable bilingual dictionary. With 70,000 entries, it's all I've ever needed to get through daily life in French or even read non-technical books. Complete pronunciation information is given for entries in both languages. At the beginning of the French-English section is a very comprehensive summary of French grammar, including the complete declensions of 76 irregular verbs. With such a summary, you don't need to carry a grammar book along if you have this dictionary with you.

Whether you like French or not, this small package packs a huge punch w/ its plethora of words. What really pleased me were all the idioms and phrases I didn't expect in a ENG-FR dictionary as small as this one. Its range of words, from the usual to the oddball, is great and I keep it next to me always when writing in FR. I've yet to find a dictionary as small as this one yet with the same wealth of reference.

Now, first off, this book isn't for everyone. If you're not pretty open-minded, you won't like it. If you don't like to laugh, you won't like it. As far as I'm concerned, The Snake Pit Book (as well as the local Snake Pit zine and the Snake Quarterly and the Snake Pit Annuals) contains some of the funniest and most real comix you'll ever read. This is the personal zine taken to the next insane level. You wouldn't think an endless series of daily comix about a guy getting either drunk or stoned or both and falling in and out of love and just sort of struggling with the endless hassles of everyday life could be funny and also somehow inspiring. But you'd be wrong. So, unless you're all uptight and weird (in a bad way), buy it and get ready to be a part of the weird (in a good way), wonderful, awful, exciting, boring, and very real world of Ben Snakepit, the Punk Everyman.

The Faux Futility of Life.......2005-04-06

Ben Snakepit has not only created an uninspired legacy, a cartoon diary of his life that sums up an entire day in three tiny ink drawn panels, but his work about his life that became his life is an everyman triumph of genius. His zine turned novel, Snakepit, is a comic strip diary, a summation of a punkrock/slacker lifestyle that, upon first appearance is totally unenviable. But the greater truth lies in that the documentation when taken as a whole reveals that he has probably accomplished more then most people ever will. The various bands and recordings, exaggerated substance abuse and the plethora of trips to the local copy marts to craft his art. We could only wish our lives were as full. This book is highly recommended and a must for anyone who enjoys zines, comix or punk rock.

Remember when you were a kid and you had those little "flipbooks?" You know the ones that I'm talking about, where they had a different picture on each page and when you fanned the pages, the moving pictures approximated a crude animated story. In many ways, that's what Ben "Snakepit" White's The Snakepit Book reminds me of. Published as a zine since the summer of 2000, Snakepit is a daily three-panel strip describing the writer/artist's day. Taken individually, the rough-drawn strips portray the daily grind of its punk protagonist - work, play, love and loss - in excruciating repetition.

When taken as a whole, however, The Snakepit Book, collecting three years of daily strips, fascinates like the flipbooks of our youth. White is a friendly music fan, musician and punk aficionado, and what he lacks in artistic direction he more than makes up for with unflagging spirit and dedication to the DIY aesthetic. The Snakepit Book is a charming, entertaining read, best experienced by tasting a week or so of White's life at a time. During the couple of weeks that it will take you to digest the book, White's charming autobiographical tales will have fired your imagination, forcing the reader to take a closer look at their own daily accomplishments.

Personally, I also appreciate the song titles listed at the top of each day's strip, White's creative and often times appropriate song choices providing a running soundtrack to the story. A member of punk band J Church, White's extensive musical knowledge and far-ranging tastes mirror my own, his song-a-day approach leading me to dig into my own record collection to rediscover some of the tunes he matches so well to the daily strips. Highly recommended, White's Snakepit strip breathes new life into a stale zine medium, The Snakepit Book an entertaining read that is full of energy and intelligence. I agree that this is an interesting, personal perspective on life in a public mental hospital in the era before before deinstitutionalization. The book is easy to read and hard to put down. It avoids the trite idealization of the all-knowing therapist and complete, explainable recovery that you see in the movie- a more realistic portrayal of mental illness and its treatment is provided instead. Still, keep in mind that even this more realistic version of "Juniper Hill" has much better conditions than most public institutions of the day. The author makes this point herself in her follow-up book, Counterclockwise.

It's hard not to envision the Oscar-winning movie while reading Snake Pit, but the book provides less Hollywood romance and a greater sense of the protagonist's disorientation. Her struggle to swim toward sanity's shore is palpable. The prose is terse but not always gripping; yet it convinces.
