Book Description
This timely volume presents the latest thinking on the monetary policy rules and seeks to determine just what types of rules and policy guidelines function best. A unique cooperative research effort that allowed contributors to evaluate different policy rules using their own specific approaches, this collection presents their striking findings on the potential response of interest rates to an array of variables, including alterations in the rates of inflation, unemployment, and exchange.
Monetary Policy Rules illustrates that simple policy rules are more robust and more efficient than complex rules with multiple variables. A state-of-the-art appraisal of the fundamental issues facing the Federal Reserve Board and other central banks, Monetary Policy Rules is essential reading for economic analysts and policymakers alike.

Book Description
Inspired by the experience of some advanced economies, a number of emerging market economies have recently adopted rules limiting the budget deficit, expenditure level, or indebtedness of the public sector, while others consider them for eventual adoption. This volume brings together policy analysts to discuss the rationale, suitability, and usefulness of fiscal policy rules in emerging market economies. Grouped under three main parts (political economy and macroeconomic setting; design issues at the national level; design issues at the subnational level), the chapters have a practical orientation, based on conceptual grounding.

Book Description
Macesich's latest book argues that the poor performance of monetary policy can be attributed to the ease with which "money" slips into the political arena to become a singularly important political issue. Discretionary authority facilitates monetary manipulation for political ends, thereby increasing uncertainty and casting doubt on money, the monetary system, and indeed the monetary authority itself. The author traces the evolution of the debate over rules versus discretionary authority and discusses various methods that economists have proposed for constrain the monetary authority. If monetary policy is to be credible and thus successful, the hands of monetary policy makers are better tied than left free. This work by a noted authority on monetary theory and policy will interest economists in academia and the policy-making community.

Book Description
This work reveals the reasons why the rules of monetary union in Europe were reopened and changed after the Maastricht Treaty, and explains why they might be changed again in the future. Following Maastricht, national governments found themselves pushed into distinctive roles, as promoters, gatekeepers, reformers and defectors, as voter preferences and central bank powers combined in different ways to create clear incentives for politicians. These roles explain the push from certain countries for specific changes to EMU rules, why some countries needed EMU more than others and under what conditions pressure to create an economic government for Europe could succeed or fail.

If there is one lesson to be taken away from reading this report on "the search for the biological origins of sexual orientation," it's that science at its best is always an ongoing process. Combining profiles of the top researchers of sexual orientation with straightforward explanations of the results of their experiments in neurobiology, genetics, and other fields, Burr provides a fascinating glimpse of men and women for whom science is not the pursuit of definitive answers about the way things are, but the motivation for constant questions. He also gives them a voice to vent frustration at the ways their research has been misrepresented by non-scientists trying to fit objective data into subjective moral and ethical arguments.
Customer Reviews:
"You'd have to be an idiot...".......2007-09-25
My favorite part of the book is Hammer (the geneticist who discovered Xq28--the GAY-1 gene, responsible for the gayness of 17% of the gay male population) saying"....you have to be sure first that the trait isn't chosen before you look for its gene." He pauses, incredulous, "Can you imagine any sane, reputable biologist spendijng years of their life and their resourses looking through chromosomes for a gene for something that's CHOSEN? I suppose you could do it, but you'd have to be a complete idiot because it would be the equivilent of staking your entire scientific career and reputation on finding a gene for"--he searches for an example--"being a Methodist."
Interesting, exciting, and sometimes really funny, the book is accessable to even those of us who had trouble with first year algebra and geometry...though an occasional chart or set of figures will give such people pause (don't give up! Go on to the next sentence...).
As far as being wide-ranging is concerned, I once read a short story in which a guest lecturer in a 10th grade high school science class based his entire lecture, and the following discussion, called "The Genetics of Baseball"(sic) on what he had learnd from this book...
A CAVIL CONCERNING GENETIC NON-RESEARCH.......2003-05-31
I enjoyed this book enormously and learned a great deal about homosexuality and about genetics. I especially appreciated Chandler Burr's letting the researchers speak for themselves, and got used to his (and their) not crossing all the t's and dotting the i's when discussing not-simple subjects. Some of what the researches say is wide-ranging and quixotic, but all of it is pretty consistently thought-provoking. For example, there's a statement on page 275 by David Botstein ("of Stanford"), having to do with genetic research, violence, IQ, and blacks (and nothing to do with homosexuality.) Chandler Burr writes: ". . .consider the search for the gene (sic) for violence." Botstein picks it up:
"I think there's more scientifically to that one, a greater likelihood of finding it, more than IQ. But it's COMPLETELY unacceptable at the moment. You can't even talk about it. Go to any university, research center, no one -- NO ONE -- will talk to you about this. Why? Simple. Because of the fear that there will be a racial correlation. And there could be. . .and I have some sympathy for this fear, mean (sic) that any scientific evidence linking some undesirable trait with black people will be used as an excuse for explicit or implicit genocide. Okay? That fear is not totally irrational. . ."
Geneticists everywhere are afraid of finding a gene for violence in "black people" in America? Huh? Well, the only way I could explain researchers fearing that they will find a "black" gene for violence instead of a "non-black" gene for violence is that their research would be based on disregarding the incidence of inter-racial violence in America (presumably, by defining inter-racial violence as a product of a "prejudice" gene, not a "violence" one?). But isn't that explanation absurd? Or despite having read this book, do I still fail to understand how genetic research experiments must be designed? Like I say, thought-provoking.
Presumably most geneticists working on DNA are white. And presumably in America a lot of geneticists are infected with the same myth-viruses as the mainstream public at whom corporations direct their advertisements and programming. But good golly, miss molly!! NO university or research center will talk about the gene for violence? I say let the chips fall where they may. Knowledge is knowledge. And as a white I'm not much concerned that blacks will want to impose eugenic solutions on me once research shows it is whites who have violence genes. Such measures would constitute violence, you see, and blacks would lack the genes for it.
Five stars because they won't let me give it ten.......2001-07-05
This book is wide ranging, covering topics as diverse as handedness (and how to tell if a rat is left handed), bird songs, vision problems in siamese cats, and far, far more than I ever wanted to know about the reproductive tract of hyenas. It all comes together beautifully, scientific explanations simple enough to be understood by the layman but thorough enough to insure understanding. It is also a fascinating look at genetic research at the end of the 20th century, and how technical problem are sometimes easier to solve than political ones.
Buy it, read it, loan it to family and friends. Give it to anyone who still thinks that sexuality is a choice. The only thing wrong is that it's gone out of print, but I hope that's because the author is preparing a second edition.
Great science writing, lots of fun........2000-09-12
I picked up this book with a few reservations. I was interested enough to order it, but I thought it had the potential to be too narrow, and that it might not be critical enough about the science (a problem, strangely, that many scientists don't have, but most popular science books do). I was pleasantly surprised to find that Burr's explanations were thorough and enjoyable, that he spared no pains in explaining what potential problems with the research were, how the researchers tried to overcome the innate limitiations of their chosen topics, and what various researchers said about each other's work.
For me, this in itself made it a treat to read. This is a great book to consider if only as an explanation of how biological sceince really works.
Now on to the gay bits. I had one major problem with the way they (the researchers, and hence Burr) tried to categorize men as either 'straight' or 'gay', with very little mucking around in the middle. In my experience there are a lot of other things going on, even with men who identify straight and whose main, only, objects of fantasy and attraction are women. Other than that, I suppose, 'A Separate Creation' didn't really change the way I view gay and being gay. Like the author took great pains to make clear, finding a gay gene, or a structure in the brain that is related to to homosexuality, doesn't change the fact that some men get turned on by other men, and some men get turned on by women. It also has little bearing on the specious 'nature/nurture' or 'choice/biological destiny' debates. None of the researchers debated that some men are born gay, and others aren't. Finding the gene or neural structure wasn't going to change that.
So, the book provides lots of cool facts, quite a bit to mull over, and some really fun insights into biological science (and into the way scientists encounter the media). But it doesn't aim to change the way anyone lives their life, which is fine. I wish it had a lot more on evolutionary explanations, and, maybe, a bit on homosexuality in other species, just to put this whole 'gay gene' into a larger context, but, other than that, I enjoyed the book, and recommend it.
800 Pound Gorilla.......1999-08-09
A Separate Creation offers a valuable perspective on the underlying truths about homosexuality. The points raised evolve toward a discussion about gender and how we are divided, male and female.
In the world today, it seems conceded that, although the specific mechanism is still disputed, homosexuality is something that arises biochemically. The disagreements on this point are interestingly enough coming from both the left and the right. The left reiterates its continued desire to view humanity as a "blank slate" upon which genetics has little or no influence. The religious right has far too much invested in categorizing homosexuality as a moral failing to consider the alternatives. Speak to most any gay man or lesbian and you will likely find that very few were molested or otherwise "recruited" into their orientation. Nor are many anything other than law-abiding citizens (sodomy violations aside). Gay people are homosexual the same way they are right or left-handed, it is just something that exists.
Author Chandler Burr does a very good job at highlighting the current research. My only negative comments revolve around his failure to link the genetic discoveries regarding gender and homosexuality into a cohesive whole.
In the scenario presented with the gay man who decides to become straight, the subject's attitude is too cavalier. Burr misses the 800 pound gorilla in this scenario; many gays want to become straight because of their desire to become a part of a family. This means a nuclear unit balanced by the different male and female contribution and dynamic, with the outcome being offspring that are born and carry with them the memory and genetic make-up of their parents. As a practical matter, this is the only immortality available to humankind. A homosexual relationship simply cannot produce this rather unique and extraordinary outcome. Its importance in calculating this equation cannot and should not be diminished.

Book Description
This is an excellently reproduced stereotaxic atlas of the pig brain. It consists of 60 frontal and 18 sagittal drawings illustrating Nissl-stained sections. A stereotaxic apparatus adapted for the Pig was used to determine the barin coordinates. Radiographic techniques were applied to verify the correct position of the central nervous system structures in the apparatus.
The atlas gives frontal and sagittal serial sections of 100&mgr;m, performed in two different animals. Magnified diagrams of brain sections representing the cellular architecture of the brain structures were produced, some of which are illustrated with photomicrographs.
Each plate is accompanied by a list of abbreviations used to label structures on the plate, together with the terms which they represent.
This work will be a very useful anatomical guide for research on the pig brain.

TESTIMONIAL
My name is Dwaine Henderson I am the owner of The Alabama Wrestling Federation out of Mobile, Alabama.I was recently browsing the net when I came across a message board that advertised a book "So you want to be a wrestling promoter? " and "No Chicken guts for the wrestling soul" by Bruce Collins.I followed the link to booksurge.com where it had a long write up describing the books. So I was thinking I would like to order these to read.So I ordered them and I was very impressed with all the information. The things I liked the most about the books. He started by telling you have to have the desire to be a wrestling promoter. And I believe that is a very true statement. I really enjoyed reading his personal experiences in the wrestling
Customer Reviews:
MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-09
Very informative. Ric Drasin tells it like it is. I highly recommend to anyone who is starting out in the business and to anyone who is. A++++
A Good Read Before Taking "The Big Step.".......2004-08-08
Honestly, I approached this book with few expectations, and was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of useful information. If you have had some degree of experience in the wrestling industry, you are probably already aware of much of the information in this book. If, however, you have aspirations to become involved in pro wrestling as a business venture, this is a good book to pick up before taking the plunge.
What makes the book especially valuable is the candid portrayal of the wrestling business. Both Drasin and Collins make no bones that a lot of dishonest people ---be they promoters, wrestlers, or bookers--- do become involved in the biz. Nor do they try to convince you that promoting pro wrestling is a good avenue toward wealth. They illustrate the positives of the pro wrestling business without giving you delusions of grandeur.
The biggest surprise for me was the portion of the book written by Bruce Dwight Collins. Ric Drasin has been involved in the pro wrestling scene, and has long been wise and savvy to the business end. Collins, on the other hand, is a more recent inductee into the ranks of the independent wrestling promotion. His limited experience, and the fact that his rookie successes and mistakes are still fresh in his head, really gives the book a greater depth.
I'll be honest... when I came to the section written by Collins, I rolled my eyes when reading about his naive beginnings as an Internet wrestling enthusiast, and thought I was in for a long, cringe-inducing read. I've met more than a handful of Internet smarcks who fancy themselves rasslin' promoters, and many of these folks are delusional! Collins, however, appears to be one of the exceptions. In fact, by reeling in his ego and showing his innocent enthusiasm for pro wrestling in the beginning, Collins better illustrates the gradual transition from a starry-eyed fan to a realistic man of business. In between you read about the many unexpected obstacles that stand in a promoter's way, from no-show wrestlers to the petty battles brought about by jealous competing promoters.
Ric Drasin's experience in the business gives you a good idea about the industry's beginnings, how it has evolved into the present day, and his vision of pro wrestling's future direction. Drink in his information well, because Ric is a good independent promoter who preaches promoting with a rational mind versus getting carried away and spending mountains of cash on unnecessary accessories.
My criticisms of this book are few, and are not significant enough to steer anybody away from the book. The aesthetics and the occasional typos give the book an amateurish look, especially the placing of an advertisement for a self defense device.
The combination of Ric Drasin's experience and Bruce Dwight Collin's recent indoctrination are what makes this book a hit. If you want to become a wrestling promoter, this book is a good start. If you want to become a wrestler, this book is a good heads-up when dealing with promoters. Check it out!
Insightful and jam packed with good advice.......2004-07-02
I have read several wrestling books that sort of addressed how to promote wrestling but none of them provided me with any useful detailed information that I really hadnt already known or thought about. This book actually does , plus it warns about pitfalls once you get started. The real life examples are great and the feeling is more of a buddy giving a fellow wrestling fanatic some helpful advice.
I would recommend this book to every hard core wrestling fan and future promoter !
5 stars ! thumbs up!
Great wrestling book !.......2003-11-26
There are a few really good wrestling books. There are even less great wrestling books. What I mean by great is that few books give you the tools to operate in wrestling.
Most books tend to be biographical in nature or they try to expose the 'seedy' side of wrestling. This book is not in that category. It is a very rare book, one that shows you HOW to BE a promoter.
This book takes you step by step on how to run your own wrestling shows and there is so much in this book ! Ric also has some extra sections such as wrestling moves and the book has some nice photos too.
I recommend many wrestling books but this is one you really SHOULD get. If you become a promoter, you will use this book as a REFERENCE manual. It's also a good look at what happens behind the curtain.
This is the wrestling book to buy !.......2003-11-25

Better than his CD.......2007-03-06
at lest u get some yummy pictures of him in this instead od a bunch of horrible music. Well actualy u get a remix cd but nobody wants that when there are hot pics of ari
Gold is Gold.......2006-08-21
Great dance songs..Super Mixes...self absorbed book....Ari fancies himself a GQ model..perhaps better suited to International Male?
Book is great but the cd?.......2006-01-27
Let's face it: Ari is a pretty boy. He knows it & so do we! He's so sexy it's a sin but dude can't sing. He knows it & so do we! I've never heard him live but listening to some of his music, I can imagine what he'd sound like. Not being mean (after all, I did say he was sexy), just keepin' it real. Everyone can't sing but apparently that isn't stopping Ari, God love him. I don't know where he finds the nerve but hey.....
Now Billy Porter (I hear he's Ari's boyfriend) is very talented, great voice on cd & in person. Like I said, very talented. I know this is supposed to be all about Ari but I just thought I'd give Billy a well deserved plug.
Gold is Platinum.......2006-01-07
I have been following Ari Golds career and seen him perform at Fez, Joes Pub,and other venues and even a private party out in East Hampton where he blew away the normally sedate crowd!
I love the Space Under Sun CD and have given it to numerous friends here and in other countries as well. Always well received.
I am so impressed with the quality of the new Book. It is a really well done hard cover book with exceptional quality photos on high quality paper. Of course Ari is gorgeous, sweet and sexy in all of them, but that was a given folks!
It is suggestive, sexy, creative and yet stays away from being too graffic. Here a little less is more.
The remix CD is killer. I have been playing it nonstop. Recreating your favorite songs in new and different ways.
I can't be more excited about the new book and CD (comes with it). Just bring it with you next time you see Ari perform and he will sign it for you. ( I did!)

Gripping, page-turning murder mystery in a desert paradise.......2004-10-18
When I moved to Arizona last summer, one of the first sights I was taken to see was San Xavier del Bac, the White Dove of the Desert. This beautiful mission, set so graciously against the mountains near Tucson, is an inspiration in its beauty and simple spirituality, which pervades.
Itule's novel walks the line between respectful description and consumerist exploitation with care and grace. His journalism work serves him well with strong narrative skills and a well-honed sense of pacing. His characters are strong; the women particularly so, and well drawn.
The descriptive passages dealing with the mission are apt and inviting, not only to those who've never been to del Bac, but to those of us who long to return.
As with so many contemporary novels, there is a bit of sexuality between a couple of the characters and indeed, sex plays an important role in the actual mystery. While this reviewer could do without any overt sex scenes, author Itule handles them well and without prurience.

Book Description
For 1,300 years, Chinese calligraphy was based on the elegant art of Wang Xizhi (
A.D. 303-361). But the seventeenth-century emergence of a style modeled on the rough, broken epigraphs of ancient bronzes and stone artifacts brought a revolution in calligraphic taste. By the eighteenth century, this led to the formation of the stele school of calligraphy, which continues to shape Chinese calligraphy today.
A dominant force in this school was the eminent calligrapher and art theorist Fu Shan (1607-1685). Because his work spans the late Ming-early Qing divide, it is an ideal prism through which to view the transformation in calligraphy.
Rather than seek a single explanation for the change in calligraphic taste, the author demonstrates and analyzes the heterogeneity of the cultural, social, and political processes behind it. Among other subjects, the book covers the late Ming interaction between high and low culture; the role of publishing; the Ming loyalist response to the Qing; and early Qing changes in intellectual discourse. In addition to the usual approach of art historians, it adopts the theoretical perspectives of such fields as material culture, print culture, and social and intellectual history.
