Book Description
been rapidly spreading the influence of large multinational forms of organization. An integral part of this process has been the rise of organizational cultures unique to particular firms. In a world where such cultures are often in conflict with the societies in which they operate, how can we understand the workings of cultural patterns and the kinds of transformations they can create?
This concise introductory text provides succinct analysis of organizational cultures and types of change they can set in motion. Culture is used in an original way to bring together and make sense of central issues in organizational behavior. The volume explores the way in which forms of culture can influence styles of management, attitudes towards leadership, the level of motivation in the workplace and hidden agendas in group dynamics. It raises the important issue of whether there can be such a thing as a right design for an organization, and brings into focus the major implications and dangers of the growing numbers of supranational firms both in terms of internal structure and for the context in which they function. Throughout, the author succeeds in weaving together behavior and organization, reconciling the traditional divorce between psychology and sociology in the field.
Drawing on case studies from Europe, Asia, and Africa, this book provides a truly international insight into forms of organizational behavior. Detailed chapter objectives and summaries are provided to aid progress and self assessment, as well as comprehensive reading lists.

Customer Reviews:
In other words, cellular organizations.......2003-12-21
Dr. Kenneth McKenzie's work, The Organizational Hologram, is really about the development of a new type of business structure, the "cellular business structure"--which he calls "the organizational hologram". According to McKenzie, organizational holograms are organizations where all the parts and functions are repeated in each different part of the organization.
McKenzie traces this type of structure all the way back to the Roman Empire, and shows that its basic structure was cellular (or holographic), not hierarchical as is often contended, and usually believed. For instance, in contrast to the traditional hierarchical view of the Empire (which really did come into existence through Diocletian and Constantine), the Empire had both senatorial provinces tied to the Senate, and imperial provinces tied to and controlled by the emperor's hand-picked governors. This type of structure contributed to Rome's adaptability over time, and thus to its longevity. Besides the pre-Constantinian Roman Empire, cellular structures can be seen in medieval monastic orders, such as the Benedictines, and in the guerrilla armies that have fought effectively in the modern West since the American revolution, and especially as developed by Mao-Tse-tung, General Giap, Chè Guevara, and other modern practitioners. Still, their application to business has been largely recent and idiosyncratic.
Several principles govern this type of organization, including the fact that all functions are duplicated in each part of the organization. Moreover, these "cells" are linked, so that change and innovation can arise anywhere in the organization, and spread to anywhere else in the organization (a secret to the adaptability of such organizations). McKenzie develops a dozen or so such characteristics of these organizations, which I consider both excessive and unnecessary (seven should be the maximum number). Still, this book is the seminal work in a rapidly growing area of business organizational design. Others such as myself write and present on this important topic, but McKenzie both writes on it, and as a consultant implements such structures.
McKenzie has published a follow-on article in one of the more recent volumes of the series, Current Topics in Management, titled, "A Theory for Managing Fast-Changing Organizations", where the basic outlines of this important thesis can be reviewed, and where he cites perfect business examples, such as McDonald's Corporation. As usual, McKenzie's work is lucid, thoughtful, and impeccably researched. I recommend it to anyone with a passion for understanding, analyzing, and implementing novel organizational structures.
How to Build a Thriving Organization.......2001-05-07
Mackenzie uses the metaphor of the hologram to explain the characteristics found within efficiently and flexibly adaptable organizations. Major concepts explored and explained are that 1.) organizations are dynamic, ever changing, 2.) "organizational processes are not random, but describable", and 3.) all processes are connected with other processes in the organization. This un-common sense approach examines a theory that considers both the organization as a structure and the relationships of associates within that organization. Congruency at the organizational level is vital but cannot exist long unless there is congruency at the associate level. These two types of congruency are "mutually dependent", that is to say, they reciprocally reinforce the other. This interdependence dynamically allows the organization to produce effectively. This book uses real life applications to explain how to understand and how to improve any organization. Written primarily with business organizations in mind, these concepts are highly transferrable to education, government agencies, and non-profit agencies. I highly recommend this book to all readers!

Book Description
Malaria is an increasing worldwide threat, with more than three hundred million infections and one million deaths every year. The world's poorest are the worst affected, and many treat themselves with traditional herbal medicines. These are often more available and affordable, and sometimes are perceived as more effective than conventional antimalarial drugs. The first book to be published on this subject, Traditional Medicinal Plants and Malaria explores the evidence for the safety and efficacy of some of these traditional medicines, and presents practical guidelines for designing studies on traditional plant-based antimalarial medicines, mosquito repellents, and insecticides. Systematic reviews of the literature and consensus guidelines form the main body of the book. Ethnomedical, ethnobotanical, pharmacological, phytochemical, toxicological, and clinical aspects of herbal antimalarials are also reviewed. These are supplemented by case studies of the most well-known traditional antimalarials.

Book Description
This book explores afresh the long-standing interest, and emphasis on, the `special' capacities of primates. Some of the recent discoveries of the higher cognitive abilities of other mammals and also birds challenge the concept that primates are special and even the view that the cognitive ability of apes is more advanced than that of nonprimate mammals and birds. It is therefore timely to ask whether primates are, in fact, special and to do so from a broad range of perspectives. Divided into five sections this book deals with topics about higher cognition and how it is manifested in different species, and also considers aspects of brain structure that might be associated with complex behavior.

Buying and Re-Schooling Ex-Racehorses
ASIN: 0929346092 |
Customer Reviews:
Good Intro to OTTB s.......2005-06-26
The title is a bit misleading since this book doesn't contain any substantive training instruction and the "expert" horse trainer may be bored by it, but I think it was a very good addition to my library as a simple overview of the off-track Thoroughbred. (I try to learn SOMEthing from every source.)
The chapters on soundness and previous training were informative, especially for people who have not hung out at race tracks.
Even though the photos are murky by today's standards and a little "dated", I found several that provided good illustrations. There are lots of pictures of horses and riders to critique or emulate.
Pittenger's attitudes about training and care are, for the most part, still contemporary. I will reccommend this book as a resource to friends who rescue Thoroughbreds from the track.
Nice book but more for inspiration than for a how to book.......2003-06-10
This was a well-written and interesting book. I enjoyed it for the simple fact that I am an avid lover of the Thoroughbred horse. She gives a lot of racing information as well as facts about various racers which I enjoyed. However, this book is only useful for "training" ideas for the rank beginner. Now I am an amateur. I've had a couple of horses since since I was 17 and am now 25. My exposure has been limited and I own a TB cross that was never raced and raised in a natural envioronment but was very green. All the things she suggests in her book for a smooth transition for exracers I could have figured out just by using my common sense! Pure inspiration and nothing more unless you are TOTALLY new to horses period. For example, she mentions that exracers are used to mild snaffles and should be left in mild bits or hackamores and not severe ones like many amateurs attempt to use for control. Well-that's pretty obvious unless you are cruel or totally ignorant of bits/hackamores!
Reschooling the Thoroughbred.......2002-02-12
I started riding TB's in Virginia as a 16-yr old. When I was 50 I bought my first TB off the track. He was an "old campaigner" with 5 years of racing, a very kind guy, but an extremely challenging project. Despite my obvious experience with riding in general and Thoroughbreds in particular I might have given up on him. I found this book to be very inspirational and helpful. I could better train him knowing how his life as a racehorse had been conducted. 7 years later, he's now a mellow 15-year, restored to soundness and a sense of purpose, happy in his work, large of heart, popular in the barn, and a big puppy dog. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves the breed and wants to give a racehorse a second chance.
Beginner Level -- ZERO STARS........2002-01-08
I assumed this book would give me good ideas for exercises, different training techniques, helping to get them bending both directions, bitting, etc. I was sorely mistaken. If you have worked with horses (not just TBs or racers) for even as little as one or two years, then you already know the stuff covered in this book. This book is more for someone who knows nothing about a TB or the racetrack. For example: the chapter on "Teaching the ex-race horse to jump" was 6 pages long, and 3 of those 6 pages discussed how to use cavalletti (plain cavalletti, like how long, how high, how to build them, etc.) and the other 3 pages were on the same beginner level, i.e. don't get in his mouth, and don't be ashamed to use his neck for balance. Now, I don't think anyone has any business trying to train any horse to jump if they don't already know this. Not to mention the fact that the pictures are so dark that you only see black blobs and outlines of the horses. I returned the copy I bought.
Wonderful, excellent, 5-star rating...buy this book first!.......1999-09-30
I absoluetly loved this book. I purchased an older version after my gerbil chewed up the library book that I hadn't had time to read. Later on, I was ever thankful about the gerbil incident...it caused me to find my dream job and my destiny with the thoroughbred breed. For the review about the person who thinks that he/she knows all about thoroughbreds and this book was not worth it, I strongly disagree...I know quite a bit myself having owned them and having worked with a relative of mine, Jenine Sahadi (who's trained several BC winners). She, too, found this book to be insightful and informative. Seems that the previous reaction's author was a bit jealous...or found the book too hard to handle because of her lack of knowledge (or his lack) of the breed itself. This is a delightful book that has been republished and updated 3 times. Be careful, however-retraining a thoroughbred is for expirianced trainers only, not the inexpirianced or even expirianced riders. These horses have seriously hurt and killed many people, including myself. Those who seriously love thoroughbreds will enjoy this book. This is the best book on reschooling TBs I've found and one of my all-time favorite books, period. Before you train your next thoroughbred, either fresh off the track or fresh to start, take a look at this book and the stories of success, photos, and information. You deserve it, and so does your horse. Also, it's good for reschooling other breeds of horses off the track, too...lots of valueable info for quarter horses and arabs off the track, as well.

Customer Reviews:
So little time, so many hikes.......2001-08-04
I acquired this book to help our gang of 4 couples decide where to hike and where not to hike. It was the most useful of several books that we had available. All the information was up to date and useful to us and helped us avoid crowds, get to where we wanted to be at the right time with the correct amount of gear. The group had a very wide range of abilities from very good to where is the elevator? It permitted people to pick and choose which hike to take and when to "take a hike"
Best book under ten bucks in my collection!.......2000-05-16
62 trails and sightseeing hot spots covered in this book. 16 of the spots are roadside or treks under a quarter mile. Each entry includes a superb historical review and a short trail description. Trails are grouped into eight areas. Each area contains an overview map. Tables also categorize trails from easiest to most challenging. Other useful tables list trails by vortex, ruins, vistas and more. Page fourteen maps out the labyrinth of rock formations. To date I have hiked over half the trails listed. As an avid hiker and Webmaster of HikeArizona.COM I can truly recommend this book.
Sedona Guide: Day Hiking and Sightseeing.......2000-01-11
My wife and I spent about 10 days dayhiking in the Sedona vicinity. We found this guide much more satisfactory than any of the pamphlets or maps obtained in tourist information sites. The guide gives good directions to trail heads and lists them in catagories from easy to challenging, and from scenic to most interesting. An accurate discription of the hike and what you will see is also found in the guide. If you're not a hiker, there is also a guide to sightseeing spots accessible from roads. A short history of Sedona is included, and even a list of old Western movies that were shot in the area. I would recommend this guide to anyone who would be visiting the Sedona area.

Medical lingo is nearly a language in its own right, so for students of medicine or amateurs who'd like to understand their doctors' conversations, a dictionary of medical terms is a necessity. With a section on medical prefixes and suffixes, more than 2,000 new entries added since 1986, and thousands of illustrations, the recent version is 112 pages longer and a lot easier on the eyes. There's information on AIDS, biochemistry, psychiatry, and geriatric medicine, concise definitions for procedures, tests, and medications, plus all the terms and topics that hit the headlines or appear in your physical report.
Book Description
Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary, 2005 Revised Edition is an invaluable resource for health care professionals with over 59,000 entries covering today's most widely used health care terms, abbreviations, medication names, and biographies of medical pioneers. Unlike unwieldy medical encyclopedias, Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary, 2005 Revised Edition is compact, portable, and affordable, making it perfect for everyone from allied health students and medical professionals to consumers without a medical background who want a desktop reference without investing a lot of money.

Perfect tool book for foreigner medical guy.......2007-01-10
If you don't speak English, and try to start your medical career in a English country. Merriam Webster's Medical Audio Dictionary can help you successful.
Nice to have and very helpful.......2006-02-28
Best in: Quality of sound, sharp pronunciation, complete word coverage, shortcut menu access.
Desired improvements: pronunciation shortcut key, better integration with other products in the same family. (Shortcut key access causes crash after switching direction inside application), lack of examples and diagrams, no IPA reference.
So 4-stars though no 5-stars product found yet.
A not so great investment.......2003-06-13
I have taught allied health students for years and I can say that I was most disappointed with this book. It is surprising that Delmar Learning, who claim to be such a leader in health textbooks, would put their name on something this miserable. The terms are largely out of date, definitions are badly written, there are no illustrations and students (who apparently this is designed for) would find a hard time using this book. I hate to be so negative but in a word IT IS AWFUL!
Not my favorite medical dictionary/manual........2000-06-13
This was the first medical dictionary I got while in medical school. Since I was in there for Neuroscience and not to get an MD. perhaps my area of speciality was too limited for those who would usually use this dictionary. It was extremely frustrating to look up things such as encephalocele and find either no information or very little information. I decided that as a dictionary of medical terminology, books such as this cannot be limited to the concise words given in other dictionaries. There were too many times I was reading or writing medical papers in which I had to put this particular version down and look up the information I needed either at school or on the Internet. When you are in a hurry, you don't have time to do either of those things and prefer to have something you can just flip open alphabetically and get the answer you were looking for. I realize someone put a lot of work into this, but it just isn't enough and I have since gotten another dictionary to which I regularly refer. It isn't this one. Karen Sadler Science Education, University of Pittsburgh
Great Dictionary!.......2000-03-25
Medicine is not my field, but I have had no problems in understanding medical terms with this dictionary, ranging from simple words like "drive" from a medical point of view, including Ct-Scan, to the strangest words for the laymen. It should be useful for a wide range of professionals working in health care. A very fine presentation!

Customer Reviews:
Transcriptionist's Friend!.......2002-09-07
My wife just returned to doing medical transcription work from home. We needed a medical dictionary for the words she was not familiar with. We opted for Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary. We are very pleased with this medical dictionary, primarily because it is bundled with the CD-ROM.
The dictionary itself contains 57,000 medical terms with understandable definitions. The definitions are more limited than in Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. For example, the MW definition of sclerosis includes reference to one other disease (multiple sclerosis). Dorland's definition of sclerosis includes references to about 40 varieties of sclerosis (including brief explanations of each). Therefore, the MW medical dictionary is not the most exhaustive on the market. It certainly would not do for a Doctor, but it is quite sufficient for a home dictionary. The MW medical dictionary is not illustrated, nor does it include abbreviations for the terms defined.
We were very glad to find the MW bundled with the CD-ROM. The CD version of the dictionary includes a search engine. So, when doing transcription, the search engine can be used on the dictionary without having to pull out a book and sift through 57,000 definitions. This is a great bonus. The CD also includes abbreviations for the medical terms. They even included a feature allowing you to hear the word pronounced correctly. I only found one drawback to the search engine. When looking at the list of terms you have to click on a term to see the definition. Sometimes two words are spelled similarly and sound nearly the same. If the word you clicked on is not the word you need, you have to clear the search and start over - there is no way to return to the list of words from your original query. At least, we have not found a way to do so.
Overall, the Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary has met our needs. We are pleased with the purchase.
