The enormous advances in molecular biology and genetics coupled with the progress in instrumentation and surgical techniques have produced a voluminous and often bewildering quantity of data. The primary objective of a second edition of Cardiovascular Physiology in the Genetically Engineered Mouse is to interpret critically the literature and to provide a framework for the enormous amount of information in this burgeoning field. As in the first edition, the monograph serves as a practical guide for the investigator interested in the functional methods used to characterize the murine cardiovascular phenotype. The monograph is organized into three parts. The first deals with principles of transgenesis and homologous recombination. The second part, which again is the largest, discusses the various techniques used to assess the cardiovascular mechanical, metabolic, and electrophysiologic phenotype. This section is organized in a hierarchical manner- i.e. from isolated myocyte to isolated heart to the intact, anesthetized and conscious mouse. The third part examines techniques used to evaluate murine smooth muscle function, genetic mouse models of hypertrophy and heart failure, and the methods to assess the cardiovascular phenotype in the developing mouse embryo. In addition, newer methods that `push the envelope', such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and computed tomography (microCT) are discussed. Expanded and updated, each chapter is richly enhanced with original tables and figures, and in many cases, extensively rewritten when compared with the first edition. An essential and enduring goal of this second edition is to continue to facilitate interactions between the basic science disciplines and help bridge the gap between molecular biology and physiology.

Dr. Hoit has done the job of a lifetime. I cannot imagine
another text with as much clearly presented and relevant
information for scientists working with mice.
Even my cats loved it. The chapter by Georgakopoulos and Kass
is particularly terrific.

An Egyptian Essential.......2007-02-03

I am a Egyptology MA student and have used this dictionary for several years. It is, honestly, the best English-language reference available for ancient Egyptian, though the multi-volume German 'Worterbuch' is considered the ultimate resource. Budge is no comparison to either, being, in general, laughably inaccurate. The only reason he's reprinted is that there are no copyrights on his work, so publishers don't have to pay extra. Faulkner, on the other hand, references the texts from which he gets his definitions, providing as complete a reference as possible. He also covers the variations of spelling and definition (which for Egyptian can be both wide and numerous).

Yes, this dictionary is handwritten, which is due to the fact that it was created _before_ there were computers that could handle a hieroglyphic type. And converting it would take a lot of time and money that academics don't have and publishers don't want to spend. (This isn't exactly an NYTimes bestseller.)

So if you're seriously interested in translating the Egyptian language, this book is a must.

Useful and Quaint.......2005-09-17

This is a most useful dictionary for those interested in reading and translating Middle Egyptian. However, I was amazed to find it entirely handwritten instead of typeset! It's fun if you have good eyesight and a little patience, otherwise get the older Wallis-Budge dictionary if you can ignore all of the "thee", "thou" and "thine" type translations he used, which only reflected an older literary style, I suppose. Being more recent than Budge, Faulkner's work will also contain some updated interpretations as well.

Ce dictionnaire est d'un grand secours pour moi. J'étudie les hiéroglyphes depuis 2 ans et mon ancien dictionnaire n'est rien en comparaison avec celui-ci. le Faulkner donne les références aux textes, ce qui aide la traduction. En plus, tout est écrit à la main, ce qui donne un certain cachet au livre!

Is this a joke?.......2002-08-26

Can anyone please tell me why this book appears to have been HANDWRITTEN? Maybe someone thought it would just look cool to publish an entire book by photocopying Faulkner's notes. The book is somewhat useful and is good for translating certain stubborn Egyptian texts, but frankly I expected much more. The book seems literally thrown together. Add to this the fact that there is NO English to Egyptian cross-reference. You have to buy the supplemental reference at additional cost (review on that coming soon).

An Egyptian hieroglyphic dictionary is the single most important tool a student can possess. Either the publishers have some specific copyright that prevents someone else from writing a similar dictionary, or there is simply no market for one because professors receive a kickback for requiring Faulkner's book. I recommend this book for one reason: It is the only one that exists.

Better, but still not good enough........2002-09-19

Where Faulkner's book consisted of handwritten notes, the 'English-Egyptian Index' appears to be poorly typed and thrown together. There are no hieroglyphics displayed whatsoever, making it useless without buying Faulkner's book as well (though I imagine that was the idea). The publisher didn't even bother to reprint the book with a phonetic font. All phonetic signs appear to have been penned onto the text, with occasionalty confusing character substitutions. Students again will have to make due, though. Just like Faulkner's dictionary, it seems to have cornered the market.

With the conclusion of the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture in 1994, agriculture has for the first time been integrated into world trade rules and disciplines. WTO Members have made a commitment to continue the reform process initiated during the Uruguay Round by starting new WTO negotiations on agriculture by 2000. This book combines academic analysis with practical expertise to discuss, in an accessible and systematic way, some of the principal aspects of these agricultural negotiations, and aims to make recommendations for viable and successful negotiating positions in the new WTO talks on agricultural trade.

Several expert articles outline the historical and political background of previous negotiations and policy developments in agricultural trade. Others provide an overview of the key issues for the new round of negotiations, including: the Common Agricultural Policy reform in view of the Millennium Round objectives and future enlargement of the European Union; the prospects for negotiations in the areas of market access and export subsidies; and aspects of primary importance for the future of international agricultural trade such as food safety and quality standards, environmental and animal welfare considerations, and issues under dispute in the WTO. This report deals with an area of overlap between two large areas of study: on livelihoods and food security, and on international trade and policy. While it concentrates on one small element of each of these broad areas (and so ignores many questions), it does so for a good reason. This is to avoid the danger that the WTO agricultural negotiations fail to contribute as strongly as they might to the promotion of food security precisely because the two areas of work and study overlap only at the margins.
