Book Description
The rapid increase in fish farming has led to increased problems in disease. There is thus now a great need for students and practising veterinarians to master the basic principles of their work as it specifically relates to these aquatic animals. This text ensures that such basics are available in one practical and readable handbook. This book is divided into two sections, the first of which deals with basic principles and approaches to aquaculture. The second section contains specific informationwhich is of use to veterinarians working in particular regions of the world. Fin fish, shrimps and ornamental fish are covered in detail. This handbook is the ideal text for the land-based veterinarian who wishes to test the waters of aquatic animal practice.
Customer Reviews:
Solid information, coherently presented, comfortable read........1998-06-12
This well-organized book does not rely on jargon to communicate data, nor does it wander on forever in complex, poorly structured sentences. Therefore, your brain can turn to the pleasant task of learning about fish. So much that was confusing is made clear in this book; it is suitable for a mid to advanced hobbyists as well as vet techs. My complaint is limited to its shallow coverage of disease, nutrition, and tropical fish.
Good buy for technicians and beginners on fish disease........1996-05-12
This book presents an interesting introduction to diseases
and their control under the special conditions of pisciculture. It is superficial enough to allow a beginner to understand the principles of this interdisciplinary aproach to
control of fish disease, but it is equally interesting to especialists, since it brings practical
information on this field - not always available to "laboratory dwellers". It was interesting
and educational to read this book and be able to see the problem
under a veterinary point of view. I have a criticism, however.
The Chapter that deals on Agents of the disease is somewhat superficial
and has mistakes (e.g. the illustrations of a Lernaea does
not depict a species of copepod of this genus). There are some inconsistencies concerning taxonomic names among the Chapters, as well

Book Description
Referred to in the Bible, pictured on the wall-friezes of ancient Egyptian tombs, and a subject of fascination for generations of scientists, the tilapias (Cichlidae: Tilapiini) have featured in the diet and culture of humankind for thousands of years. The present century has seen their spread from Africa throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, largely for food and fisheries purposes.
This book attempts to pull together our knowledge of this important group - their biology and fisheries and aquaculture - in a single volume, something that has not been done comprehensively for nearly two decades. A succession of chapters by acknowledged authorities covers evolution, phylogenetic relationships and biogeography, reproductive biology, mating systems and parental care, diet, feeding and digestive physiology, environmental physiology and energetics, the role of tilapias in ecosystems, population dynamics and management, genetics, seed production, nutrition, farming, economics and marketing. The book is aimed at biologists, fisheries scientists, aquaculturists, and all interested in aquatic ecology.

Going High?.......2007-07-30
If you are going on up to the mountains, this book may be of some value to you since you or those around you could be subject to altitude sickness. It seems prudent to know about since the consequences can be serious. The book is small enough to fit into your pack or even pocket easily. The book does a good job describing the symptoms and treatments for the disease. I plan to keep mine with my first aid supplies.
Concise and Authoratative.......2005-10-17
Stephen Bezruchka really doesn't want you to die of altitude illness, and this feeling permeates his new edition of Altitude Illness: Prevention and Treatment. Fortunately, anyone who reads this book will have all the knowledge they need to make the right decisions and avoid a tragic outcome. Altitude illness is common, easily recognizable, and there is no need to die from this cause. Unfortunately, as his very vivid case reports demonstrate, if you try hard enough, or make enough wrong decisions, it is possible to die from altitude illness. Anyone planning a high altitude sojourn could benefit from the knowledge in this compact book.
DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT..........2001-02-24
This is a wonderful, well written and well organized little book, sized to travel with its owner. It fits easily into one's pocket for easy access. It provides valuable information at one's fingertips. One should read this book before climbing or trekking above 7,000 feet (2,000 meters). It could save one's life.
The book is chock full of valuable information, and everything is explained in laymen's language. It explains what altitude sickness is, so that one may recognize its presence, and advises the reader on how to prevent it. It also provides treatment information for the various types of altitude illnesses to which one may fall prey.
This is a must have book for anyone who wants to stay healthy while scaling new heights. If one should think that this book is unnecessary, one need only pause to reflect upon the dedication found on the flyleaf of the book, "To those who died of altitude sickness". Enough said!
The book to bring to altitude.......2000-09-04
I just returned from a 6 000 meter climb (OK, 5 890...) and found this little book very helpful. Dr. Bezruchka gives us exactly the information needed, in clear concise form. There are flow-charts that help you assess the condition of your companions, or yourself. For a little fun around the camp pass the book around and try to pick out the authors little tiny gems of very dry wit -- not as easy as it sounds, but they are there...
Have the victim transported if possible by Yak.......2000-05-30
This is a concise little book on high-altitude illness. Though aimed at the Himilayan traveler, it is useful for more local mountains. I found my copy in Alamosa, Colorado. The best line in the book concerns measures to be taken in the case of HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema), "Have the victim transported if possible, by Yak or on someone's back if no other vehicles are available". I never leave home now without my Yak. I also recommend "Going Higher" by Houston for a more in-depth study of the subject.

Book Description
The county has always been used as the basic Federal census unit. Genealogical research in the census, therefore, begins with identifying the correct county jurisdictions. This work shows all U.S. county boundaries from 1790 to 1920. On each of the nearly 400 maps the old county lines are superimposed over the modern ones to highlight the boundary changes at ten-year intervals. Also included are (1) a history of census growth; (2) the technical facts about each census; (3) a discussion of census accuracy; (4) an essay on available sources for each state's old county lines; and (5) a statement with each map indicating which county census lines exist and which are lost. Then there is an index listing all present-day counties, plus nearly all defunct counties or counties later re-named. With each map there is data on boundary changes, notes about the census, and locality finding keys. There also are inset maps that clarify territorial lines, a state-by-state bibliography of sources, and an appendix outlining pitfalls in mapping county boundaries. The detail in this work is exhaustive and of such impeccable standards that there is little wonder why this award-winning publication is the number one tool in U.S. census research.

I've been doing family research for 25 years and it's about time i got my own federal census map guide. How do you know where your family was in any given year w/out it? I use it every time i turn on the computer-this is so worth it.
Map Guide to Federal Censes.......2007-07-03
Excellent book.
Everyone who does genealogy either as a hobby or profession, should have this book in their reference library
Useful for Research.......2007-04-10
I have found this book useful to have readily accessible when working with 19th and early 20th century US Population Census data. It enables quick identification where boundaries have changed or have not changed.
It is also of general interest if you are interested in population (as reflected in county boundaries) changes over time.
Where am I this year.......2007-02-14
This is one of the most valuable books I have come across for genealogy work. I was wondering why one of my relatives moved so often until I discovered this book and realized that he did not move but the county borders changed and sometimes drastically. This book has helped me in my family history search greatly and I greatly recommend it.
No genealogical reference collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of the Map Guide To The U.S. Censuses.......2006-09-08
The collaborative work of William Thorndale and William Dollarhide, Map Guide To The U.S. Federal Censuses, 1790-1920 was originally published in 1987 and has now been reissued and is once again available to aspiring and experienced genealogists. Enhanced with the inclusion of almost 400 maps, the old county lines are superimposed over modern county lines to highlight boundary changes at ten-year intervals. Also included is a history of census growth, a precis of technical facts about each census, a discussion of census accuracy, an essay on the sources available for identifying each state's old county lines, and a statement with each map indicating which county census lists survive and which are lost, and an index listing all present-day counties, defunct counties, and re-named counties. No genealogical reference collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of the Map Guide To The U.S. Censuses.

Book Description
Robert A. Manning debunks key myths about the oil industry: that the world is running out of oil, that the Caspian Basin is the new Persian Gulf, that resource scarcity combined with military modernization, economic buoyancy, and nationalism will lead to military conflict, and that territorial disputes among Asian nations are fueled by resource competition. His book assesses the energy challenges and strategies of Asian nations and explores the new geopolitics emerging out of their efforts to meet these challenges.
Customer Reviews:
How to think about energy in Asia.......2006-01-29
It is China's burgeoning energy demand which has nurtured an increased interest into the energy reality in Asia; and yet we still lack the conceptual lens through which to analyze the way that energy markets, and by extension geopolitics, are affected by the profound asymmetry between the demand for energy and the supply of resources in Asia (and East Asia in particular). It is this gap that Robert Manning bridges with the "Asian Energy Factor."
Mr. Manning's angle is captured in these words: "Whether they [Asia-Pacific nations] gravitate--as some have already begun to do--towards market-based solutions and realize the myriad commercial possibilities of foreign investment, regional integration and privatization, and deregulation or older dirigiste models may be the difference between increased conflict or increased cooperation in Asia." Alone, this sentence offers a useful conceptual take on the energy challenge which confronts us: how to push the world to geoeconomics rather than geopolitics in the scramble for energy. Exposing this broad dilemma is the book's prime contribution.
Mr. Manning is also useful in showing how one should approach the analysis of energy questions. Although some of his information is dated (the book came out in 2000), he demonstrates that energy is intricately linked to politics, economics, and geography; any analysis which fails to take so inclusive a view is bound to fail. (His section on Central Asia, in particular, is very good at this integrationist approach.) Mr. Manning's argument that Asia's energy situation can produce sufficient interdependence for cooperation is also very interesting.
To be honest, I diverge with Robert Manning on two counts: he confuses a country's domestic energy realities with its foreign policy. It is possible for a country to combine a commitment to markets with an aggressive foreign policy (there are various times when America and Britain would fit this profile). By referring to many countries' market friendliness he logically concludes that the prospects for conflict are diminished; but in assuming an identity between foreign and domestic policy, I believe that he errs.
(In a later article he exposes the dilemma in these terms: "It is unclear how Asian policy-makers will view the global politics of Asian energy markets. Will they view it through the lens of traditional geopolitics of real estate and sea-lane security? Or will they view it through the lens of geo-economics, where international investment, joint ventures and global cooperation rather than competition for resources and conflict is the prevalent means to satisfy energy security requirements?" But he resorts, again, to looking at domestic politics.)
My other disagreement is with Mr. Manning's unwillingness to explore the ways in which energy can lead to conflict; although I agree with his assessment that energy is often a mere manifestation of underlying geopolitical rivalry, it is still important to uncover the mechanics which can link energy to conflict. By choosing not to explore this idea in detail, I believe that is evades a very important subject.
These disagreements aside, the "Asian Energy Factor" is one of the most important contributions on the subject; by debunking some of the most important fallacies, Mr. Manning allows for the debate to focus on the significant topics. This is even more useful today than it was when the book was first published.
Paucities and Scarcities.......2001-05-23
An excellent work from one of our most important scholars on Asia. Riddled with numbers and graphs, the book is still readable for those just encountering energy politics. The referencing is also excellent, and allows one to delve further into the topic.
His initial chapters on environment/pollution and population growth/demand, and scarcity are important by themselves. Understanding the differences between a scarcity of resources and political limitations or economic bottlenecks on those resources is essential to being able to really forecast the strategic environment. Consequently, the time Manning spends belittling Paul Ehrlich and the Club of Rome is well spent. The country analyses are also very useful, and give one a sense not only of the economics of energy, but of the two way impact of energy and political relationships between countries. With our noble leaders beginning to evoke various fears about Asia, this is very important in understanding the nature and degree of "emerging threats."
Manning might be too bold in divorcing extending military interests with growing energy demands, but it is worth reading the book to develop an opinion on the subject.
I also recommend checking out the Energy Information Administrations's website, which Manning used heavily. It was of great use to me in a recent project: www.eia.doe.gov
Also useful is the cover piece of the January 2001 'Atlantic Monthly.' The piece, "The New Old Economy: Oil, Computers, and the Reinvention of the Earth," in helping advance perspectives of the oil industry. See: http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2001/01/rauch.htm
Energy Interdependence as an Integrative Force.......2001-03-12
Robert Manning covers a lot of ground in this book, from the Caspian, to India, to Northeast Asia, and challenges a lot of established notions, but two of the points he makes really stand out:
First, he argues that energy interdependence is a potential positive force for Asian regional stability. While a number of analysts (from the serious scholar Kent Calder to the more shrill "Blue Team" types) have argued that China's entry onto the stage as a major oil importer will have serious negative consequences for regional stability, Manning argues that this is far from clear, and that it may actually have positive consequences. Other energy development issues looming in the future, such as the need for natural gas integration in Northeast Asia, can only be addressed by cooperation among regional governments and some degree of mutual interdependence.
Second, Manning points out in his preface how little contact and exchange there is between American analysts who focus on political and security issues, on the one hand, and those who focus on energy from an economic perspective. (As an example, he points out the differing views of the South China Sea between energy specialists and security policy analysts.) Energy issues involve tie-ins with a broad range of national security, economic, and environmental issues, and Manning argues that the policy community could benefit from more dialogue between these two separate sets of analysts. (I've long known this - since my own academic and professional background sort of straddles both groups.)
While the book does suffer a bit from poor editing in some spots, it is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in Asian security issues and/or the region's rapidly growing energy sector.
Intriguing Analysis of an Emerging Geopolitical Concern.......2001-03-01
Without a doubt, energy will be among one of the most important factors determining diplomatic behavior and relations in Asia in the coming decades. The Asian Energy Factor tackles this emerging geopolitical concern through an intriguing analysis of Asia's growing demand for energy and its global political, economic, and strategic consequences. Unique from other authors addressing this under-examined issue, Robert Manning sets the stage by exposing the myth that the world is quickly running out of oil. Technology and new methods of both collection and use of energy have made the impending energy crisis espoused by the doomsayers less of a concern. Manning proceeds to focus on the regional powers (China, India, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia) and where their individual energy abilities and needs puts them on the collective strategic map. He examines the commercial and political dynamic between the countries demanding increasing amounts of energy (China, Japan, and India) and those with the reserves (the Middle East and Southeast Asia).
As The Asian Energy Factor aptly points out, energy security is the crux upon which the economic, social, energy, and military policies of Asian nations converge; it is among the most critical issues in the coming decade. Manning delves deep into these economic and strategic complexities and continues to challenge the prevailing wisdom about Asian power structure and energy competition.
