    Book Description

Yale Ferguson and Richard Mansbach suggest that the state is losing its capacity, legitimacy and authority to remain the primary actor in world affairs and is being transformed into a more complex "post-international universe" characterized by diverse and overlapping polities. Ferguson and Mansbach, accordingly, revise the "maps" of global politics and explain the shifting and accelerating forces transforming them in an important contribution to the issues of globalization and the future of international relations theory.

4 out of 5 stars Very good read for process improvements.......2006-10-03

I have read this book recently and finished it in one go. This book teaches process mapping and process improvement in a very concise and to-the-point manner. There are examples of processes from real world. Best thing I liked is the bulleted approach for the important points related to processes, improvements, hindrances, measurements etc. So you need not to read through endless paragraphs to find one useful point.

Its a preferred read for all Process and Quality people.

"Topics of this important collection range broadly over the origins of sugar plantations and the planter's world, the relations between the British West Indies and the North American colonies, the character of slave societies, slave family life, and slave resistance, the process of emancipation and the transition to other forms of labor in the 19th century, and the nature of island and regional identity.

Craton writes well, and he makes major contributions to historiographic debates and methodology. He combines the traditional historian's care over sources with the cross-disciplinary approaches of the new social history. This is a convenient and valuable collection. Highly recommended..." -Choice

      Book Description

Neural network research often builds on the fiction that neurons are simple linear threshold units, completely neglecting the highly dynamic and complex nature of synapses, dendrites, and voltage-dependent ionic currents. Biophysics of Computation: Information Processing in Single Neurons challenges this notion, using richly detailed experimental and theoretical findings from cellular biophysics to explain the repertoire of computational functions available to single neurons. The author shows how individual nerve cells can multiply, integrate, or delay synaptic inputs and how information can be encoded in the voltage across the membrane, in the intracellular calcium concentration, or in the timing of individual spikes. Key topics covered include the linear cable equation; cable theory as applied to passive dendritic trees and dendritic spines; chemical and electrical synapses and how to treat them from a computational point of view; nonlinear interactions of synaptic input in passive and active dendritic trees; the Hodgkin-Huxley model of action potential generation and propagation; phase space analysis; linking stochastic ionic channels to membrane-dependent currents; calcium- and potassium-currents and their role in information processing; the role of diffusion, buffering and binding of calcium, and other messenger systems in information processing and storage; short- and long-term models of synaptic plasticity; simplified models of single cells; stochastic aspects of neuronal firing; the nature of the neuronal code; and unconventional models of sub-cellular computation. Biophysics of Computation: Information Processing in Single Neurons serves as an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in cellular biophysics, computational neuroscience, and neural networks, and will appeal to students and professionals in neuroscience, electrical and computer engineering, and physics.

5 out of 5 stars Single Neuron Computational Modeling.......2004-06-11

This is the main book, the "Bible", on single neuron and ion channel computational modeling. Plenty of theory & rigor here! Professor Koch, with CalTech, models single ion channel function, dendrite, dendrite tree function, cable theory, stocastic theories, integrate-fire model, the Poisson model, and discusses how single neurons work together inside the brain. It is worth owning both as a reference book and to use in the laboratory. Dr. Koch has written many other books, but I think this stands out as his best. Methods in Neuronal Modeling 2nd edition is also very good. Koch's writings are complementary, but are not redundant. One can read this book without a problem if you know Calculus.

5 out of 5 stars How smart is a neuron?.......2004-04-15

For young scientists who are interested in understanding the dynamics of the human brain this change in collective attitude is of profound significance, to which Koch's book provides an ideal introduction.Written in a precise yet easy style, the 21 chapters of Biophysics of Computation begin at the beginning, introducing the reader to elementary electrical properties of membrane patches, linear cable theory and the properties of passive dendritic trees. These introductory chapters are followed by two on the properties of synapses and the various ways that synapses can interact to perform logic on passive dendritic trees. Then the Hodgkin-Huxley formulation for impulse propagation on a single fibre is discussed in detail, and various simplifying models are presented. As a basis for the Hodgkin-Huxley description the present
understanding of ionic channels is reviewed, emphasizing the importance of calcium currents. Further chapters discuss linearization of the H-H equations for small amplitude behavior; present a careful examination of ionic diffusion processes; and describe electrochemical properties of dendritic spines, synaptic plasticity, simple neural models, stochastic neural models and the properties of bursting cells. Just about every facet of currently available neural knowledge is touched upon, with appropriate references to a carefully selected bibliography that will help the diligent novice delve deeply into whatever aspect of neural information processing he or she chooses.

All of the above comprises an extended introduction to Chapters 17 to 19, which: `synthesize the previously learned lessons into a complete account of the events occurring in realistic dendritic trees with all of their attendant nonlinearities'. `We will see', the author writes, `that dendrites can indeed be very powerful, nontraditional computational devices, implementing a number of continuous operations.' Thus Biophysics of Computation offers a definitive statement for the direction in which the neural research of the new century should go. Chapter 20, the penultimate, discusses several speculations for non-neural computation in the brain, ranging from molecular computing below the level of a single neuron to the effects of chemical diffusants (nitric oxide, calcium ions, carbon monoxide, etc.) on large numbers of neurons. Although this entire area has been neglected by most of the neuroscience community, Koch points out that there are no good reasons for doing so. As we enter the new century, neuroscientists should keep their minds open. Finally, in the summary of Chapter 21, seven problems for future research projects are listed, emphasizing that the investigation of information processing in single neurons is very much a work in progress. It is of interest to examine these `strategic questions' as they reveal the author's intuitions about possible directions of future developments. (Note that these are not direct quotes, as I have taken the liberty of summarizing Koch's questions.)

      (1) How can the operation of multiplication be implemented at the level of a single neuron?
      (2) What are the sources of noise in a neural system and how does this noise influence the logical operation of a single neuron?
      (3) How is the style of neural computation influenced by metabolic considerations?
      (4) What is the function of the apical dendrite, which is a typical cortical structure?
      (5) How and where does learning actually take place in a neural system?
      (6) What are the functions of the dendritic trees, the forms of which vary so widely from neuron to neuron?
      (7) How can we construct neural models that are sufficiently realistic to capture the essential functions of real neurons yet simple enough to allow large-scale computations of brain dynamics?

As these questions indicate, Koch is not merely concerned with understanding
what unusual behaviours the neuron does or might exhibit. His broad aim is to comprehend the relation between this behavioural ability and the computational tasks that the neuron is called upon to perform. In his words:

``Thinking about brain style computation requires a certain frame of mind, related to but distinctly different from that of the biophysicist. For instance, how should we think of a chemical synapse? In terms of complicated pre- and post-synaptic elements? Ionic channels? Calcium binding proteins? Or as a non-reciprocal and stochastic switching device that transmits a binary signal rapidly between two neurons and remembers its history of usage? The answer is that we must be concerned with both aspects, with biophysics as well as computation.''

This excellent book is evidently a labour of love, stemming from the author's 1982 doctoral thesis on information processing in dendritic trees. As far as I can tell all relevant aspects of neural processing are considered, with what seem to me to be just the proper amounts of emphasis. The writing style is precise and rigorous without being stuffy, and the many references to a fifty-page bibliography will be of enormous value to young researchers starting out in this field.

In addition to its obvious value for those engaged in experimental, theoretical or numerical studies of neuronal behaviour Biophysics of Computation would also work well as the text for an introductory course in neural dynamics, perhaps as part of a neuroscience program.

      4 out of 5 stars brief & comprehensive.......2001-07-07

This book attempts to integrate bits from papers & other textbooks. Incorporated in the book are all but the most oft-discussed topics in neurophysics.

We don't know much about biological neurons. We don't really understand how they perform computation. Yet we have some models, approximations of the models, and theories of how the model neurons get organized to do computation. These are summarized in this book in a breif & comprehensive manner.

Some notes: 1) Portions of the book may be found in greater detail elsewhere. 2) The book is more about biophysics than compuation.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, a good place to start.......2000-04-30

This is a fine comprehensive book. However, it might be helpful to bear in mind, as you study it, that although it was published in late 1998, a few fundamental principles presented in the early chapters were originally developed a long time ago. In particular, the Hodgkin Huxley Katz picture of the neuron was developed in the heroic period of the 1950s after the introduction of the voltage clamp. It is a good model but it may not be the whole story, and could change in important ways as we learn more about the molecular structure of ion channels.

The possibility exists that the neuron is a multichannel device, a cable rather than a wire. The model is attractive because a multichannel nerve would enable us to think as fast as we do. Because nerve impulses are so very slow moving, each successive impulse might, (contrary to everything we thought we knew) be rich in information. A multichannel neuron has the power to convey, with each single all-or-nothing impulse, graded information. For example, to 20 discrete channels, one can assign 20 distinct tiers of meaning, and each channel can thus "mean" a level of intensity between 1 and 20. The phenomenon can easily escape detection because such a neuron appears, to conventional instruments, to convey only the classically blank, binary impulse that is so confidently presented to us on the first page of every neurobiology text, and in summary in this book as well.

To create a continuous longitudinal information channel running the full length of an axon membrane, one would simply link each ion portal to its next door neighbor. A conformation change in one portal induces a conformation change in the next in line. A domino effect more intuitively satisfying, perhaps, than the familiar waveguide or cable models of membrane depolarization reiterated here.

One can visualize many parallel tracks, a corduroy membrane. Possibly linear, possibly helical. Linked receptors are commonplace. The molecular structure of the potassium channel has been published recently, and so we are now finally working at the level where a multichannel membrane can be detected. It is a theoretical construct but if each single impulse carries information, then the computational burden on the nervous system is vastly reduced, and the physiological meaning of intensively studied structures like the synapse suddenly changes. The meaning of several of the models presented in this book also changes, often in quite intriguing ways.

      4 out of 5 stars it works.......2000-01-16

although a bit long, the author gets his point across in an if not literary, at least interesting style of writing. I especially found chapter 2 interesting because the introduction is easy to read and gives you just enough background for non-neurology dudes to get the hang of the rest of the book. the topic is one that has interested me for many years, and has gotten me seriously thinking about changing my college major. very interesting book. a must read.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Introduction to this Unique and Highly Effective Weapon........2006-08-12

The karambit can be defined as a small hand-held, curved fixed blade for personal-defense. ~ In "Karambit: Exotic Weapon of the Indonesian Archipelago" Steve Tarani gives us an outstanding introduction to this unique and highly effective weapon.

The book begins with a very interesting introduction and history, followed by three sections teaching use of the karambit:
        > Part 1 - Basic Handling and Operation
        > Part 2 - Combat Strategy and Intermediate Skills
        > Part 3 - Advanced Application

Each section is well illustrated with numerous photographs demonstrating use of the karambit. Although no book will make you a master of any weapon, you can certainly build a good foundation in the use of the karambit by learning the skills demonstrated herein. I highly recommend Steve Tarani's "Karambit: Exotic Weapon of the Indonesian Archipelago" for anyone interested in adding a new skill to their martial arts knowledge.

        4 out of 5 stars Great overview.......2005-03-31

Karambits, curved fighting knives primarily from the Indonesia Archipelago, are becoming more and more popular albeit controversially so. Folks either love 'em or hate 'em with not much in-between. On the pro-side, they are nearly impossible to disarm and can perform multiple cuts in a single pass as practitioners can flip them mid cut. On the con side, they require very close quarters and are nearly impossible to stab with. This book clearly advocates the benefits of this unique weapon, providing an excellent historical overview along with practical tips and tricks for using one effectively. I think it oversimplifies in some places (kinda like I just did) but not to a large enough extent to warn folks away from it.

I do feel obliged to mention that these weapons are really, really expensive (at least for anything of quality anyway) and very challenging to master without competent instruction. If you want to use one, I suggest picking up a non-edged trainer first. They can also be used as control devices in their own right. While no martial art can be taught solely from a manual, this one covers all the basics in a fair amount of depth. It is easy to read and understand.

The author, Steve Tarani, is a Filipino Escrima and Indonesian Silat practitioner as well as a world renowned edged weapons combat instructor. In that capacity he has passed his skills along to thousands of law enforcement professionals and civilian practitioners. He is certainly knows his stuff and communicates it pretty effectively in this book.

        Lawrence Kane
Author of Surviving Armed Assaults, The Way of Kata, and Martial Arts Instruction

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on this weapon.......2003-06-16

Mr. Tarani has trained in Indonesian Silat and is one of the instructors in edged weapons tactics at the famous Gunsite training academy in Arizona, and has served as an instructor and consultant on edged weapons to many law enforcement and government agencies. He is certainly a fine, qualified instructor and he gives an excellent discussion on the history and practical use of this weapon in this book.

I only have one problem with a book like this. Obviously one book can't cover everything important on knife-fighting, but I had one comment about this, relating to primarily slashing weapons, which is what this book is about.

Although the Karambit is certainly an effective weapon, like all weapons it has its advantages and limitations. In this case, since it's a slashing weapon mainly, requiring curved, rounded strokes that travel in an arc rather than a straight line, it's inherently slower than using faster, straight strikes. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, so the fastest way to traverse the distance isn't an arc.

Mr. Tarani does point out that one advantage of the Karambit is that since you can reverse the stroke each strike affords two opportunities to slash--but nevertheless, it still won't be as fast as a straight strike.

And by "straight" I'm not talking about the powerful straight thrusts such as seen in the classical karate punch--I'm referring more to what I call a "ballistic thrust," which is more like a flast flicking strike and which has more speed than power.

An opponent skilled in this type of movement will have an edge in a knife-fight with an opponent with a Karambit or similar curved weapon. I've seen this many times in tests with my own students and black belts--I found they could reach my hand, arm, or body once they were skilled in these techniques (which can take a few years to learn) more easily than I could using slashing strikes. Of course, they could use slashing strikes too if the opportunity arose. Paul Vunak, another respected instructor in knife-fighting, also makes this point in his seminars, although he approaches it from the standpoint of the Filipino rather than Indonesian martial arts--which is fine, too.

That having been said, this is an excellent book on the use of the Karambit weapon. If one sees this method as an important addition to one's existing knife-fighting skills and repertory, that would be the best use of this book and technique.

5 out of 5 stars Great all around book.......2003-01-01

I picked this up to browse at the local bookstore and ended up buying it an hour later. Mr. Tarani does a great job of introducing this unique weapon through history and some techniques. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. No one expects to learn a martial art thru a manual alone, but this gives a good taste of what you'll get from a qualified instructor.

I couldn't decide between this deck or Robin Wood....well....

I got the Robin Wood first and was soooo disappointed. Everyone is super happy, dimpled and "too" pretty. The colours seem just washed out and weak, and some of the cards look downright silly and cheesy.7 of Wands spring to mind. The Wheel of Fortune is the worst I have seen in any deck, it's so bad it is hard to look at. I had high hopes, but when I got it in my hands, wow what a let down.

Then I got the Morgan-Greer. WOW. From the minute I took it out I was in love and enraptured. The saturated colours, no borders and unusual classic artwork drew me into what seems a world of it's very own. When I take out this deck (just like Tarot of the Old Path) it is as if I am entering and being enveloped in a different world. The pictures seem simple, yet there is so much going on, much symbolism to find hidden. Laying the cards out side by side is powerful. A story naturally unfolds and blends one into another. And one thing I discovered a few days ago was how different the cards look in darker light. The use of colours and richness of them have a unique power in this deck, very mystical.

I myself was worried that the star backs which recieve so many complaints were going to be a drawback, but upon seeing them I loved those as well. Random hand-drawn stars are much more enticing than just perfect ones. The only thing I can think of to improve the deck would be a different darker colour for the back. A rich purple or forest green.

These cards must be seen in person too get the full impact of the deep, evocative colours and intense gorgeous artwork. This deck has been around 28 years for a reason....it's a classic that speaks to the inner, quiet center of a person and captures you in it's magic.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Gorgeous.......2007-02-10

The colors and depictions contained in this deck are simply wonderful. The colors are saturated and the drawings themselves are beautiful and convey the meaning of the cards easily. I learned to read tarot on this deck and it is my favorite (although I really do love the Rider-Waite Radience deck too). I agree with the other reviewers: the borderless cards really do add a dimension of expansiveness and only add to the deck. I do wish the back of the deck were better done. In comparison to the depictions, the back of the cards look juvenile. Highly recommend this deck!

5 out of 5 stars Became my favorite deck overnight.......2007-01-10

When my Morgan Greer Tarot Deck arrived in the mail I fell in love with it immediately. The colors are gorgeous, the work beautiful, and I even kind of like the star backs that some of the other reviewers have criticized. It's a terrific deck and I use it all the time now.

5 out of 5 stars Even more beautiful in person.......2006-12-08

I have a number of decks and was recently drawn to this one. I'm a professional Astrologer (new world astrology dot com) but I have a background in Tarot. It's interesting how different decks resonate with you at different times.

These cards are even more beautiful in person - the colors are rich and many sites don't do them justice, as they come across as more faded and the yellow not as attractice. I just received them this morning and I am very happy and excited to begin using this. I agree that the bordeless card gives a whole new feel and also, the cards and thin - I always wanted a paper deck but this, even though it's plastic, comes very close. Thinner cards feel better in the hands and I think out of all my decks right now these feel more like a Tarot deck then just another reproduced deck of cards.

For many years, those interested in the history of the art of comics--from scholars to fans--had very few options. The available books were either filled with glaring errors or far too limited in their scope. Along comes Roger Sabin and his near-definitive history. The best thing about this book is that it begins with a strong foundation--that comics is a separate and unique artistic medium--and goes on to leave practically no stone unturned, from mainstream superheroes to underground work to Japanese manga to the new alternatives to the strong European tradition. There's even an entire chapter on comics by and aimed toward women, hopefully dispelling the myth that comics are just for boys.

I had this book for a class a little while ago and I have to agree with my professor that this book skips over a lot of important stuff in the "history of Comic Art". There is not nearly enough info about main stream publishers (Marvel and DC) and yet there are pages upon pages of independent works from the 70's. Don't get me wrong it's valuable information, BUT it's not balanced. It's like this book was written in the early 80's and written based on personal experiences and comic book tastes rather than hard research.

An art form that is often dismissed as mere entertainment gets its due in this huge, entertaining and enlightening book. Comics, Comix & Graphic Novels is undoubtedly the most comprehensive study of the graphic qualities and cultural impact of comic art, tracing the history of the genre from early woodcuts to modern times. In addition to documenting the origins of established comics such as Tintin and Batman, the contributions and influence of recent artists, including Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame and Art Spiegelman (Maus) are also discussed in depth. In addition to the treasure trove of illustrations in the book, Sabin's text deftly balances the history of comic art as entertainment with the placement of these comics in a cultural context. However, despite his scholarly tone the book never comes across as high-handed or pretentious. Beautifully produced and consummately authoritative, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in popular culture.

This is a wonderful book. It's beautifully written, with quality reproductions. If you are looking for one book to sum up this genre, then this must surely be it. Little known (and completely useless) fact . . . This book 'stars' in the film Notting Hill! It is clearly visible in a scene with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant towards the end of the film. The book shop where the two leading characters meet is meant to be a travel book shop, so goodness knows how this particular title made it on to the shelves!

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-10-02

Truly one of the greatest "reference" books on the subject of the history of comix. I checked it out from a library to use as a reference for a term paper, and liked it so much that I bought it. The text is rich, and the pictures and illustrations are amazing. A magnificent and beautifully-put-together book.

        Book Description

The first major historical work about the most influential artistic movement in America since the Beat Generation revolutionized literature.

A provocative chronicle of the guerrilla art movement that changed comics forever, this comprehensive book follows the movements of 50 artists from 1967 to 1972, the heyday of the underground comix movement. Through interviews with the participants and other materials, Rebel Visions is the most intimate look ever at the people and events that forged the phenomenon known as underground comix, from New York to San Francisco, from the corn belt to deep in the heart of Texas, beginning that day in 1968 when R. Crumb debuted Zap #1 from a baby carriage on Haight Ashbury Street. Rosenkranz has spent 20 years researching this book and acquiring the cooperation of every significant underground cartoonist who worked throughout this period, including Crumb, Gilbert Shelton (Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers), Bill Griffith (Zippy the Pinhead), Art Spiegelman (Maus), Jack Jackson, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams, and many more. The book is illustrated with many never-before-seen drawings by all of the underground cartoonists, and exclusive photographs.

The book focuses on San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, where Crumb and the rest of his Zap cronies commingled with the rest of the city's counter-cultural scene, notably musicians like the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. The counterculture was omnipresent in San Francisco for those few years, with underground tabloids like Yellow Dog and Gothic Blimp Works steering the zeitgeist out-of-control, along with the music, political, and psychedelic drug scenes, all of which found a group of unlikely revolutionaries who drew cartoons right at the epicenter.

"It did feel like this must have been what the cubists were going through, like all the magic of being in Paris for the post-Impressionistic movement did feel somehow like being in San Francisco in the early 1970s." — Art Spiegelman, from Rebel Visions

"Like any utopian experiment, ideals were challenged and rewritten in the face of the daily grind. It was a harsh life lesson for me, but there were lots of laughs and some beautiful times, too..."— Justin Green, from Rebel Visions

"Underground comics were more like art and less like comics." — Gilbert Shelton, from Rebel Visions

If you don't know what a comix is, maybe you should go on e-bay and buy yourself a copy of ZAP. While you still can.

For those who are familiar with underground comic books, Patrick Rosenkranz has provided an amazing amount of background information about the creators and the times that produced what could be viewed as the trashiest and/or the most significant cultural artifacts of the second half of the 20th Century.

Unlike previous histories and articles that simply reprint the more or less shocking comic pages and regurgitate the same old information, misinformation and opinions about the hippies and their graphic art, Rebel Visions is based on Mr. Rosenkranz own interviews and correspondence with the first wave of underground comix creators. In lengthy footnoted quotes, the artist/writers are finally allowed to tell their own strange and wonderful stories. And by following the stories organized in yearly chapters, I cames to understand something of the birth, bloom and demise of a phenomena that never made the transition to mainstream product or the 1980s.

Rebel Visions also presents a significant amount of previously unpublished art for the connoisseur as well as an exhaustive index for the scholar.

A word of warning: these comic books are not, and never were, intended for children. Most of the comix displayed and discussed in Rebel Visions were all about breaking taboos, about freedom of expression in the face of a repressive mainstream culture and not about tittilation. That came later. If you're interested in cartoons, graphic art, the counter culture, art, politics, the sixties, propaganda, freedom and censorship, as well as the usual sex, drugs and war, check it out.
