Book Description
Employing both large-scale surveys and in-depth interviews, the authors document the mental health effects on workers caused by the closure of four General Motor plants. They paint a portrait of how the social context in which these workers lived played a critical role in their experiences of unemployment or of keeping their jobs when others around them lost theirs. More than simply a study of unemployment and mental health, this book is also a story of coping and resilience.

Book Description
The vestibular system plays a crucial role in enabling a person to remain oriented and move through his environment successfully. Dysfunction of this complex system may leave a patient totally disabled. "Dizziness" is a complaint commonly heard by neurologists, otolaryngologists, and other health care providers, yet its origins are many and often difficult to pinpoint and to treat. Clinical Neurophysiology of the Vestibular System is a classic text that provides a framework for understanding the pathphysiology of diseases involving the vestibular system. Part I reviews the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system, with emphasis on clinically relevant material. Part II outlines important features in the patient's history, examination, and laboratory evaluation. Part III presents differential diagnostic points that help the clinician decide on the cause and treatment of the patient's problem. Part IV is a new section on the symptomatic treatment of vertigo. The third edition is thoroughly revised and has been expanded, covering the rapid advances that have occurred in the field in the last ten years. There are new chapters on the laboratory diagnosis of vestibular dysfunction, migraine, immune-mediated disorders, inherited disorders, symptomatic treatment of vertigo, antiemetic and antivertigo drugs, and vestibular rehabilitation.
Book Description
Recapture Your Health presents an empowering, easy-to-follow health-improvement protocol called the 3LS Wellness Program. This combination of unique relaxation, diet, and exercise techniques can reverse chronic conditions, heal degenerative diseases, improve lifestyle conditions, and help one achieve a state of vibrant health.
The 3LS Wellness Program supports the body to heal itself, thus a majority of conditions can be addressed. Sufferers of major conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and diabetes, along with individuals experiencing common "nuisance" symptoms like recurrent headaches, allergies, and fatigue, will see improvement or complete reversal of their health problems. The 3LS can be a godsend to people who have tried everything and have not gotten better, who have puzzling or unusual symptoms, whose doctor cannot provide a diagnosis, or who don't have health insurance. It is also very effective for mental/emotional symptoms, and for people who have been injured and cannot find relief from pain.
This unique program is very adaptable to the interests, age, and ability of a broad range of the population. Part I describes the three basic practices and how to apply them in daily life in the real world, thus avoiding common social and other pitfalls that usually derail most people from improving their health. Part II discusses the basic causes of illness and how the program addresses them, so that they can be applied consciously rather than by rote. Separate chapters give additional self-help practices, tips for working with practitioners, and instructions for using the 3LS for mental and emotional symptoms including depression, anxiety, alcoholism, schizophrenia, ADD, etc. A helpful resource guide includes a long list of recommended books and troubleshooting sections keep people moving forward dynamically in their healing process. An appendix for practitioners of all modalities gives tips for offering the program to patients or clients, especially those whose symptoms have not been relieved by clinical methods.
The name "3LS" is derived from the image of a wooden 3-Legged Stool such as you might find on a dairy farm. The three practices, like the three legs of a stool, are the basic support for total health. Dr. Stoll developed the program during his 38+ years as a medical doctor, and Jan DeCourtney provides additional perspective as a certified massage therapist. Both authors have followed this program to help their own health and bring the program to life by including details that make all the difference in being successful. Recapture Your Health is written in an easy-to-read and understand format. Thousands of people have improved their health using this protocol.
Customer Reviews:
Recapture Your Health.......2007-07-17
Recapture Your Health outlines a balanced solution to improving overall health. The authors call this program a 3LS solution named after the three legged stool which is perfectly balanced and fully functional without a lot of extras that aren't needed.
Like the three legged stool, the 3LS program contains three simple but sturdy elements (nutrition, exercise, and relaxation) that create a foundation for improved health. The nutrition section focuses primarily on minimizing damage caused by the high intake of refined foods in the modern diet. The authors promote a whole foods approach to nutrition that reduces and potentially eliminates all refined foods. This is very similar to the slow food philosophy that is gaining popularity.
Likewise, the exercise and relaxation portions of this program are not radical but are somewhat based in good common sense. Participants are expected to exercise twenty minutes three times a week of virtually any type of activity that gets them moving. Relaxation is guided through various types of formal relaxation exercises such as meditation or guided imagery completed for approximately twenty minutes twice a day.
A Recipe For Wellness.......2007-06-06
While conventional medicine tends to focus on covering up symptoms with medications, many of which cause dangerous side-effects, this book provides step-by-step instructions on how to potentially avoid the doctor's office altogether. Based on the premise of 'how to be healthy,' this book outlines what Dr. Stoll refers to as the '3-Legged Stool of Wellness' - Skilled Relaxation, A Whole Foods Diet, and Exercise. As simple as this sounds, there are many crucial aspects that one needs to be aware of in order to implement the Wellness lifestyle effectively. 'Recapture Your Health' provides all the knowledge, insight, frequently asked questions, and troubleshooting guides needed for anyone to do just what the title says. Jan DeCourtney's writing style makes this book both fun and motivational to read cover to cover as well as easy to use as a quick-reference using the detailed index in the back. Hats off to this book, a long-awaited tribute to a very important aspect of Walt Stoll's life's work of getting the truth about Wellness out to the public!
Priceless Information For Lifelong Health and Maintenance.......2007-04-25
Walt Stoll and Jan DeCourtney have given readers a chance to redeem their health or maintain it using three simple tools. Seemingly so simple, yet the authors have used their talents to give a good explanation of some of the who's, what's, and why's of the road back to health.
Even if you think you know the information to wellness they present, "Recapture Your Health" is still a great reference to have linking many common and not so common ailments to the modern day interpretation of stress. Many of us have used one of their key elements at one time or another, but in putting all the pieces of the puzzle together you have a great weapon to use in the war against disease.
If you have not yet had to deal with a serious illness or condition, you can certainly can go a long way to prevent it, according to the book, and maintain quality your quality of life for the years to come.
Something for everyone,
A+
Alternative Healing.......2007-02-07
"Recapture Your Health" focuses on relaxation, nutrition and exercise. This is the basis for the entire program so you can maintain optimal health. Not only does this show a way to a healthier lifestyle, it promises relief from a wide variety of chronic health conditions. Whether you are already suffering from a condition or want to take a more preventive approach, this book has many pertinent answers. The authors teach a more holistic approach and also explain the roots of illness.
What is the real cause of illness?
How can you reduce depression, anger and anxiety?
Is there a natural solution for chronic fatigue?
Throughout the book, personal examples are shown as people who followed this program explain how their symptoms disappeared. Some of the main things the authors recommend is the elimination of sugars, alcohol and caffeine. In order to follow the program there is also a handy list of foods you should include or avoid. If you enjoy reading labels, there is also a section about additives.
After following this program you can expect better sleep, happier moods and less headaches. As the authors say: "...most people lose health because of an unhealthy lifestyle." This book puts you on a fast track with a special section called "quick start guides." This allows you to get started even before you have read a third of the book.
The authors present a discussion about supplements, encourage healthy lifestyle changes and give lists of exercises like Pilates, Yoga and Walking. I also though their list of helpful ways to reduce stress was very helpful.
~The Rebecca Review
Fabulous Book everyone should read.......2007-01-19
Dr Stoll really empowers you to take control of your own health through his 3 pronged approach. (what he calls the "3 legged stool") I had never been exposed before to the whole foods concept - I guess I was living under a rock all these years. I like having the rationale behind things explained, like WHY skilled relaxation is important (we heal 24X faster than when sleeping) or WHY we should exercise 20 min 3X week (so we get at least 6 minutes past our "Second Wind") I found this book to be a compelling read and gave it to all my relatives as gifts. I also ordered The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia, and Raw Food, Real World.

Book Description
Balance Disorders: A Case-Study Approach is the first reference to address balance disorders from a case-study perspective. The text reflects the dual perspective of a neurologist and otolaryngologist and covers both medical and surgical treatments. Three groups of case studies focus on various aspects of the evaluation of the patient with vertigo or balance disorder, patients with common balance disorders, and cases whose balance is disrupted by unusual diseases. Cases become increasingly difficult in moving through the text. Each case is based on an actual patient and points to a clearly stated teaching focus. Each also contains questions and answers, and a summary of points for review.

Book Description
One of the best at the art of wildlife photography presents a year of his work in an informative and visually remarkable diary. From January's visit to India (and its magnificent tigers) to March's Arctic journey (where a sleeping polar cub lies atop mama bear) to December's African safari (leopards, jackals, hyenas), each month includes valuable information on planning a trip, packing equipment, and taking the actual shot. Almost every page features breathtaking examples of the author's pictures, and special boxed tips focus on shooting in low-light, selecting film stock, capturing silhouettes, and more. Digital cameras, underwater photography, macro lenses, coping with weather and its effects, and producing scans: it's all here, along with advice on photographing "local wildlife," because even when you're home, the fun can continue.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Photography, Educational and Entertaining.......2004-06-29
Professional UK photographer Andy Rouse is well known for his outstanding nature photographs, and this book is filled cover-to-cover with them. The accompanying text is informative, including plenty of tips and insight on how the author captured the images. Andy's witty anecdotal style is a pleasant departure from most other books of the genre, making Life in the Wild a thoroughly enjoyable book to read as well.
Highly recommended!
Authors Extra Comments.......2004-06-29
HI, I just wanted to put my side of a review that I just read from a US reader. All of my comments in the book are tongue in cheek and have generally been read that way by the thousands of photographers that have enjoyed this book in Europe. If they aren't then it is solely down to our difference in humour between the US and Europe. I do not have a negative view of other photographers, far from it in fact, like I said everything has to be taken tongue in cheek. So I really hope that you enjoy LIfe in the Wild and that it makes you laugh, as that is it's intention - to lighten a subject that is often far too serious.
Beautiful photographs; Snobby author.......2004-05-29
This book features beautiful photographs, including both those taken on Rouse's home turf (England) and others taken in locales ranging from Brazil to Madagascar. Each chapter describes one month of a typical year in Rouse's life, focusing one or two photography projects Rouse tackled that month.
Photographers will get some good tips by reading this book, although note that at the time Rouse wrote this book he was almost exclusively a film photographer rather than digital. Also, as the book went on the author became more involved in medium format photography and began to leave 35mm behind.
The fly in the ointment is Rouse's own personality. His comments towards the other photographers he meets along the way are snide, sneering, and condescending. This is true whether the other photographers are snapshooters, ecotourists, advanced amateurs, semi-pros or professionals.
Thus, in his international travels Rouse is hampered by other photographers in India, but in the end he wins because he was riding on the fastest elephant. On a boat trip to the Farne Islands he stays dry because (he thinks) the captain selected the best seat for him.
To cite one example of Rouse's annoying egotism, in South Africa he encounters a group of ecotourists, and is irritated at them because they arrived at a leopard kill first. "We nicknamed them brainlackers, but only in private, as they always gave us nice chocolate biscuits for elevenses."
In short, I enjoyed the pictures, and did read the book through to the end. I did find the author's egotism to be annoying, however.

Book Description
Here at last is a book for fly tiers, beginners and experts alike, that provides foolproof directions for tying all types of flies. In this book even the beginner knows where he is during every step in the process, from the moment he ties in the waxed thread until he ties off the fly with the whip finish knot.
But unlike the specialized books on fly tying that describe particular types or styles of flies, this book covers them all -- all types of both freshwater and saltwater flies. Whether you are talking about dry flies for trout, streamers for tarpon, or hair bugs for bass, you will find them here. Eric Leiser teaches the basic methods for tying all basic flies. Standard dries? Yes. Hair dries? Yes. Parachute dries? Yes. Hackleless flies? Again yes. Wets, nymphs, streamers, Jassids and other terrestrials, bucktails and Muddlers, Spuddlers and Matukas? Yes, everything! This book provides all the basics for the different types and styles of flies, and patterns are given for the most important flies in each category.
The drawings are the work of another master fly tier, Dave Whitlock, who knows the processes himself and supplements Leiser's detailed instructions with step-by-step illustrations. In addition, there are clear and useful photographs by Gus Nevros.
In sum, this is truly The Complete Book of Fly Tying. It will clarify the mysteries for the beginner; it will reveal tricks of the trade for the expert who seeks to improve his method or who wants to tie types of flies he has not attempted before. It also covers, of course, the necessary tools and is filled throughout with immensely helpful discussion of materials, and their special uses and characteristic behavior during the process of tying. And there is specific advice on how to master difficult or obstinate materials such as deer hair, which often baffles beginning tiers of the hair-bodied fly. Throughout, Eric Leiser not only describes each step in detail, but shows how to avoid some all-too-common mistakes.
This book is a complete education -- and one that will leave you well prepared to tie any kind of fly for any fish taken on the fly rod.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book but pictures need to be updated.......2000-05-12
I found this book very helpful. I am new to fly tying and had to learn the basics. The author dose a great job of doing that. There is also a very good selection of flies. You can tie almost any major pattern for trout, fresh water or salt water fishing. Lots and lots of little tying secrets that are great for the beginner. "You can't judge a book by it's cover". The only major problem with this book is it's illustrations. Don't judge them by the excellent graphics on the cover. It is the last one you will see. All pictures are black and white and must have been taken when the book was originally published. They are not even good black and white illustrations. With new color detailed pictures, this book would be unbeatable. In spite of the poor illustrations, this book is definitely worth buying. I hope the author reads this and updates them.
Excellent Instructional Book.......2000-02-20
Have recently moved from the Texas coast to western Pennsylvania, this book was particularly helpful learning how to tie a variety of trout flies. This book is extremely helpful learning a variety of techniques and patterns. If you are a beginner this is the book for you as it will instruct you in the various techniques and tricks necessary to become an accomplished tier. Book is set up well with respect to the fact that it teaches you how to tie one fly and then gives the recipe how to tie any others. Good Stuff.
The Art of Fly Tying.......2000-02-07
This book is an excellent tool for a beginning fly tyer. All the techniques for a variety of flies is walked through step by step. From small trout dry flies to salt water flies and tandem hook streamers, the procedure for each fly is demonstrated. These techniques can then be used for a number of flies listed at the end of each section. The only drawback to the book that I found, is that you need a lot of material to tie the flies. I found myself going back and forth from the fly supplier in my area to get the materials needed to finish a fly. This is probably unavoidable if one is going to tie flies, though. Overall, an excellent book.
Fantastic for the beginner and the expert!.......1999-02-17
I had just started tying and this was the first book I bought. Leiser takes through the steps of tying very clearly and in a relaxing manner. From the beginning you get the feeling of a patient yet light hearted instructor. The book covers a variety of methods and patterns. Everyone that has seen my copy has said only one thing, "I need to get this one, it's great!" Include this in your tying book library.
Excellent pattern book.......1998-06-30

Book Description
Mead takes a broad look at past and present changes in the church, and postulates a future to which those changes are calling us. Denominations, once structured to deliver resources to far-off lands of foreign mission, now encounter the mission field in the layperson's workplace and the community surrounding the local congregation. Thus, the church is called to reinvention for this new mission frontier. Study guide information follows.

The future of the church.......2006-06-05
This book does a very good job of describing the background of today's church, and where it can go in the future. An excellent book to help understand the forces effecting the modern church.

an illuminators dream.......2007-04-23
As a practicing medieval illuminator and historical bookbinder, I can recommend wholeheartedly Ms. Grafe's fantastic book on gilding. The book is well written and contains many valuable illustrations to accompany somewhat complicated procedures. I especially appreciate the easy to follow, clear, detailed steps for the gesso gilding process which is very time consuming (but worth every minute) and its success depends on many factors which can be a challenge to someone just starting. She gives the tips and pointers that only an experienced gilder could pass on to help with the environmental influences and other things which can stifle success. It is an excellent resource material for anyone who is fascinated in book arts but especially useful for someone who wants to improve and perfect their technique in gilding paper and parchment.
A Classic Book on a Classic Subject.......2007-03-22
If you have an interest in this art-form then you want to do it the way it has been done for hundreds of years. This little book shows you the way of the masters down through the centuries. To recreate the beauty that has been held timeless in illuminated manuscripts, thus adding to it's number, is a fine thing thing to accomplish in a lifetime.
One of the best books on gilding I've read!.......1998-07-01
Secreta is easy to understand, well organized, and has a lot of excellent drawings and photographs of the steps involved in gilding. It also has some historical background on how gilding was used, as well as a nice little section on using the paint pigments that would have accompanied the gilding on medieval manuscripts. One of the few how-to books that I've read cover to cover, and have recommended to my friends who already do gilding or are interested in learning.
