superbly written and factual.......1998-08-24

The author describes the development of mountain sources of water and the tunnels and ditches that brought it to the sugar plantations. Then she weaves in the history of the sugar industry which changed the subsistence economy of the Hawaiians forever and brought Hawaii into the modern world. While doing this skillfully in a clear style she also weaves in much of the history of the islands. If you have any interest in Hawaii the book will fascinate you.

Overall this book is very good, but there are quite a number of errors, both of explanation, inconsistency and simple proofing.
My wife is Spanish, so I was able to verify with her.

Learning a language is difficult enough without a text book introducing errors!

I haven't been to school in 10 years. For me to take a language class as my first class back to school was insane, but this workbook really helped me to put the key terms together and form my sentences. Must have for anyone taking Spanish.

Easy and fun, indeed.......2006-02-10

I have been learning Spanish through conversation classes this past year and got almost to the fluent level. Even though I had practiced all tenses through conversation, I knew it was time now to reinforce the foundation. It was a nice surprise to find this grammar book. It can be read very easily with lots of examples to practice every single thing learnt. The examples are fun and creative. They sometimes include new words that pick your curiosity to go look for their meaning in the dictionnary. I usually burst into laugh when I found out the overall meaning of the example, or just enjoyed the beauty of the sentence. I would say they are so "latino" sometimes in their context, so it makes sense with Spanish grammar! This approach lightens up the "drill" boredom.
I was surprised to take the grammar book and a pencil everywhere with me, when and where I expected to wait some time. It is a big deal, since I love books and have a lot of them, but am not really consistent in reading them!
This book gives an absolute lift to the level of Spanish. I would recommend anyone to do the drills consistantly, not skipping any. It ends up getting into the confort zone, finding its space in the brain, and popping out when needed. But I still need to speak some spanish during this grammar reading time in order to practice and remember them!
I also liked the format of large paperback that comes with slightly larger font and also some drawings once in a while, that lighten up the space for the readers.

In this major contribution to the study of illuminated manuscripts, Robert Deshman explores in detail one of the great works of medieval art, the sumptuously illustrated Benedictional commissioned by the powerful Anglo-Saxon bishop, Æthelwold of Winchester (963-84). A seminal work in the formation of the "Winchester style," the manuscript embodies a highly intricate and often novel presentation of images. Deshman considers the iconography, style, ornament, and text against the backdrop of their pictorial, literary, and liturgical sources. This enables him then to anchor the work within the patron's historical and cultural context: his monastic reforms, his culting of saints, his political ideals, the ideological connotations of earlier artistic styles--and, most importantly, his unusual hermeneutic modes of thought and visualization, wherein extremely abstruse theological concepts are reified in clouds, architecture, drapery, and even ornament.

Employing traditional art historical tools, Deshman nonetheless develops an innovative methodological thesis, that specific visual and conceptual motifs run through the large and varied cycle of images, tying them together in a complex, multilayered program. This programmatic pictorial technique, "cycle symbolism," occurs in an exceptionally systematic fashion in Æthelwold's manuscript, but was used widely in medieval art. Deshman's analysis offers a new way of looking at and understanding picture cycles, one that has fundamental methodological implications for the entire field of manuscript illumination.

Out of Date material concerning Saturn.......2001-01-18

Vicki Lenz has written a thoughtful, but out of date rendition of how Saturn currently conducts business. Because of lower sales numbers, many of the dealerships have reverted to the old way of selling cars. Long gone are the barbeques and the customer information seminars, proactive recalls, and friendly cost effective customer service. Policy now calls for "touching the desk", the typical car sales approach for the sales person to get the manager before the customer leaves the premises as a last ditch effort. Saturn is no longer rated as the number 1 car in sales satisfaction and the JD Powers ranking is sinking annually. Ms. Lenz needs to seriously update her material. The techniques she describes haven't been used by Saturn for quite awhile.

What a magnificent book! What a great example is the story of Saturn. It proves what we all know, but what so few do - that a genuine love of a product with a genuine care for a customer is the certain way to succeed in business. I'll take 200 copies please for all our real estate offices!
