A springboard for further research.......2003-09-20
N.A. and Eric have edited a fine book, a doorway into further expansive studies of mucus (and other topics). While the book didn't answer all my questions--for instance, what makes those really sticky boogers that we can never get off our fingers unless we wipe them on a door or a park bench? or, is it more polite to tell someone when they have a booger in their nose, or just to let them go on telling you about their niece's bat mitzvah?--the book was nonetheless a compelling read.

The Sunfishes by Jack Ellis.......2000-11-18
This is an excellent book! Jack puts sunfish in the same category as spooky trout or bonefish. He doesn't take the usual approach of how easy it is to catch them but, rather how to stalk the BIG sunfish using flies resembling what they actually eat-wasps, pupa, etc. Jack's writing always challenges the usual, well-worn approaches and gives serious,interesting alternatives. The information here can be applied to anywhere there are sunfish and big ones! Read it several times, it's worth it.
Provides excellent technique info., noting deep water........1998-10-08
This is an excellent book if you are interested in fly fishing for bluegill, shell crackers, and other sunfish. Ellis gives a lot of pertinent info. on behavior and location. The one drawback of this 2nd edition is a lack of adequate illustrations and photos which could boost this book to 5 stars. It is a book worth underlining as you read and re-read.
To narrowly focused.......1998-05-04
This book should only be read by flyfishers who live in the south because it is to narrowly focused on that part of the country.Flyfishers who live farther north should buy a book with a broader scope.

Old, But A Classic.......2003-01-20
If you have an interest in racing the Sunfish sailboat, this old book is fun and worth the read. Many things have changed about the Sunfish since this book was written, but the one important lesson remains the same--sail it flat! Once I learned this lesson (many years ago, of course), racing one design boats became fun. I even brought home a trophy or two after reading it. If you can find a copy, buy it. This book is short and packed with great information. Though some of the info is now bound to be historical, I am certain many of the lessons still apply.

This book is in print. As of today, Amazon does not have it. It is available through the Sunfish class office. Or you can get it at retailers who sell Sunfish or Sunfish parts, sailing gear, and related equipment. There are several online if you don't live near one. The book contains three books: "The Sunfish Book", "Successful Sunfish Racing", and "Sail It Flat", plus additional articles. A must for Sunfish sailors.

What a great read for a winter afternoon........2000-02-10
Just when I was suffering cabin fever, I discovered this book. Reading Nat's re-introduction to Sunfish racing, I felt myself in my own boat again. His historical contexts were very interesting and his descriptions of sailing were very vivid. Thank you Nat. Summer doesn't feel so far away.

i loved this book, nat philbbrick is one of the best nantucket authors. most of nathaniels books are historical about the island, but this one focuses on nat himself. very well written!

Another reference than how to book.......2007-06-13
This book has lovely art and references in the production of a Japanese cartoon. I however believe this book is more of a supplemental read and reference than anything else. I deducted two stars from the overall rating based on the fact that this book is lacking instruction in animation. People don't use cells and cameras anymore. Animation is done on the computer for the most part.
Recording and repeatedly watching a Japanese Cartoon would provide far more instruction than this book could offer with it's less than 200 pages of instruction and I use the term instruction rather loosely. This book provides an explanation for those quirky techniques in Japanese animation and that is what I mean by instruction.
If you are a fan of Japanese Animation but have no ambition towards pursuing a career in animation this book is a wonderful collector's item. I however recommend for the animation student the Osamu Tezuka Animation books instead. It's about as instructive as a book on Japanese animation ever will be. Also avoid the Anime Mania book by Christopher Hart I loved most of the books in his Manga Mania series but the Anime Mania is more of a keepsake than instruction on the Production of an Anime style cartoon.
I must conclude that watching Pokemon or Anime on Adult Swim would be more instructive than this book.
Those Japanese cartoons would show you how to animate those comical motions in Japanese animation.
Really Informative and Interesting!.......2007-03-22
This is book is Excelent! I love it! It tells you alot about the process of making anime in Japan. It gives you a informative run down of the perspective of screen shots, coloring the animation, the background images, the tools and equipment used and the movement of the charcters. I found it very interesting. I think that anyone could use this and pick up the basics of anime and try and create their own. I recomend this to those who have a passion to become a animator (like me) or just love anime and want to know how it is made!
Very good concise reference.......2005-01-24
This book is definitely for someone with a bit of knowledge in animation and manga in general.
Personally, I love concise texts (like this one) because they go straight to the point and only really say stuff that needs to be said.
This book introduces you to the world of Manga animation (i.e. Anime) in the quickest way possible, and it does touch on a bit of everything: how coloring is done in cel animation, what frame rates are normally used, how you could improve your artwork, how to achieve particular special effects, and how to do backgrounds.
The only thing missing from this book, which in my view is a pretty important thing, is the digital animation process - i.e. coloring anime digitally, and digitally animate drawings.
Other than that, this book is excellent as a quick reference - especially if you already have some knowledge in animation and you are thinking of making your very own anime, in which case this book will serve as an excellent quick reference. However, if you are looking for something that will walk you through every single step of the animation process, this book is probably not for you. Actually, if that is what you are after, you should be taking a course in animation instead of reading a book anyway.
A terrible book.......2005-01-07
I don't recommend this book for beginners or serious animators. It has pretty illustrations and fluff. If you're a huge anime fan who just wants to know how anime is made rather than how to make anime or cartoons then this is definitely for you. It shows a few important aspects to Japanese cartoons such as the coloring techniques and background painting techniques. Those cute ghost effects but other than that it fails to instruct in anyway.
I recommend Christopher Hart's How to Draw Animation over this one or Preston Blair's Cartoon Animation.
Somewhat lacking and Misleading.......2005-01-04
The How to Draw title is definitely a misnomer. It's an okay book. It tells you the coloring techniques for anime and doesn't give enough emphasis on how to draw those angles. It mentions those cute animeesque techniques.
Overall not very good at all.
