This provocative new book presents the results of twenty years of research on deforestation in the Amazon. By carefully observing the changing character of human settlements and their association with deforestation over such a prolonged period, the author is able to reject much of the `perceived wisdom'. He skillfully dissects various models of deforestation and provides hard evidence on what is myth and what is reality. The book begins by challenging a hypothesis used by many scholars to explain deforestation. The `turnover hypothesis' states that small farmers `cause' deforestation by moving rapidly across newly forested land in an effort to make a living. Dr. Campari argues that in reality the process is far more complex. He reveals that it is actually the larger farms who are the main culprits of deforestation and that, in comparison, the impact of small farmers is marginal. He also challenges the belief that current deforestation, as in the past, is the result of distortionary government policies. The author proves that deforestation continues today because existing policies are based on outdated assumptions of regional development. He goes on to discuss the policy implications of his important findings and identify possibilities for controlling deforestation in the future. This is one of the few studies that accurately documents the process of deforestation in the Amazon. Researchers, academics and policymakers with an interest in environmental policy and natural resource management will appreciate the new and updated information and fresh policy ideas found in this volume.

The Best Bodybuilding Book Out There!.......2004-05-01

This book is perfect for anyone who is into bodybuilding, or just lifting weights to get into shape. It offers workouts for people who can make it to the gym only 3 times a week, those who can go more often, and those who can't make it at all!

Normally the most difficult thing for me to overcome when working out is boredom. However, with this book, I can change up my routine whenever the old one gets boring. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

I won't go nuts with this review because it is simple -

This author and this book is the first step to take...PERIOD!
I had been working out since I was 14, and I honestly did not know what I was doing until I was about 24 or older. Lots of wasted time! I had read many books, tons of those popular "magazines". All of them left me confused and going in circles.

My advice - start with this book and read it cover to cover. Then go buy his other books Bodybuilding 101 and Bodybuilding 201. These 3 books alone will give you all you need to know for your first 2 or 3 years of training. After that, your experience and knowledge will guide you from then on. I also recommend buying any other book Dr. Wolff has written. Also, this guy is no pasty pale, 100 pound Doctor reading from a textbook. He has used these methods himself and as you can see by the pictures of him in the books, he is huge and healthy. He walks the walk.

Robert Wolff gives you proven and time tested material, coupled with his own personal experience. He goes over proper diet, proper technique and methodology to get you started off on the right foot. All of us are different and what works in the magazine interviews of the Pro bodybuilders probably will not work for you.

Did I mention that the author really will answer your e-mail questions!! Yes, I have had actually direct communication with him. He answered my questions and was more than happy to help!!!

Forget Atkins, South Beach, and all the other hype out there. Read and learn from Dr. Wolff.

A Perfect Addition To My Fitness Library.......2002-03-31

I was looking for some new training ideas
and this book gave me plenty. While not big on
diet and nutrition (plenty of other books cover that)
it did give me lots of ideas on how to change my
workouts.

After reading it, I think the goal of the book is to
give people different workouts to try and from those
workouts give women and men some new and different
choices that can help keep them motivated and
working out and not quitting because of boredom or
no results.

I enjoyed the author's web site....
He seems like someone who's down to earth, very
knowledegable and speaks about the mental aspect
and its importance unlike any of the other
fitness and health experts out there.

Just what I needed.......2001-06-18

I'm so tired of the old three sets of this and three times a week of that. I almost wanted to stop training. And I'm not too excited at the thought of spending more money on personal trainers, so I bought Robert Wolff's Great Workout book. Best money I ever spent.

I kinda feel uncomfortable writing where everyone can read what I'm saying, but I will say that the workouts are different, some of them are tough, but they work really, really well and that's all I was looking for in a workout book.

I bought his other book called Bodybuilding 101 and found it to be more informative as far as information for a beginner to advanced. But having said that, I think this next book offers a lot more in the way of workouts than Bodybuilding 101 did. For that reason and because it's worked really well for me, I give it five stars.

Excellent source for workout routines........2001-03-17

I have been lifting for 18 months now, I have varied my routine about every 8-12 weeks or so and was running out of ideas,this book is full of great workouts each for different goals and a lot of usefull tips for lifting, a little bit of general nutritional info but definitely great for the weight lifters.

good compromise.......2007-03-27

This is a comprehensive dictionary which covers all of the usual transactions. The print is easy to read and the blue entries are very helpful. This is several steps above the Collins Pocket Dictionary, which is smaller but frustating. An example, the word "turn" is translated in its single must frequent verb and noun forms in Collins. Langenscheidt gives the turn on, turn off etc. uses. The dictionary is durable and fits in my side pants pocket.
The downside as noted is that the words are not accented for pronunciation in the Italian section.

Complaints Somewhat Unfounded.......2006-01-29

One review above says that there are no pronunciations given for Italian words, only for the English ones. This isn't fair because it's unnecessary typically since pronunciation is very strict and uniformed in Italian. Near the beginning of the dictionary, an explanation of Italian pronunciation is provided. To list them for every Italian word would greatly increase its size and be ridiculously redundant. It's English that requires specific pronunciation information for each word.

Another review here complains about no stress being provided. For most Italian words, the second to last syllable is stressed. Hardly any do not follow this pattern. Stress is also explained at the beginning of this dictionary. For the few that are stressed on the last syllable, they are written in Italian with an accent mark on the stressed vowel. This dictionary provides those markings contrary to the other reviewers claims. However, for the few words in which the stress is on a syllable other than the second to last or the last one, yes, they do not include them and should. But, this is for very few words and really hasn't been much of a problem for me.

Another review here makes some very positive points that I'd like to reitterate: this is a very useful dictionary for traveling and living in Italy. It's not too heavy, it's durable, and after a few months of living in Italy, I've rarely had a word that was not contained in this dictionary. I have a much larger dictionary that I keep at my apartment for moredetailed understanding and more subtle meaning of Italian words. For keeping in my coat pocket, though, I have not found another Italian dictionary that provides me as much assistance for the size and weight of this one.

No pronounciations.......2005-04-09

Not only does this dictionary not have stress indications for Italian words, but it has NO PRONOUNCIATIONS!!! Well, that's not entirely true -- the dictionary contains pronounciations of English in the English --> Italian section. Not very helpful for English speakers! This would've been the ideal dictionary for me in size and durability, but without pronounciations, this English speaker is returning the dictionary and looking for a new one.

My favorite Italian/English dictionary........2003-10-15

I have bought 6 Italian/English dictionaries. They range from a large, unabridged "boat anchor" to a number of paperbacks. Except for the NTC beginner's dictionary, I've found all the be useful in learning the language.

Recently I had a flood in my apartment and had to pack all my books in cartons while repairs were made. When I couldn't find the carton that contained my dictionaries, I looked for a new one at the local bookstore and found this Langenscheidt dictionary. It's small. It has a non-paper plasticized cover. I wasn't sure it would be useful, but at least it was different from any of my other dictionaries that were still packed. Then I started using it. In short, it's the sweet spot for useability, especially when carrying it around. It's just the right size. The type is readable. There are enough entries, with examples to make it useful (unlike the NTC book which I found very frustrating because of too few entries). The inside covers have a great indexing system. There are useful grammar sections in convenient locations. I don't find the lack of stress-pronunciation indicators a problem, since they do seem to be present on many words where the stress is on the last syllable (such as in "citta") and since most Italian words have a regular stress position on next to the last syllable. And I rely on audio tapes to learn how to pronounce correctly, anyway.

Finally, the construction of the book is solid. It won't fall apart. The paper is high quality. The blue typeface for the entries is a pleasure to look at. It's obvious it will last a long time, several times longer than the el-cheapo paperbacks that go for a little less money.

No stess indications!.......2003-07-17

I really like my Langenscheidt Spanish dictionary, so when I started learning Italian I got a copy of this dictionary.
I liked the size, layout, easy to read typeface, and durable cover. However, I quickly found it to be inadequate because it does not indicate the stressed syllable of the italian words. The stress in italian isn't always obvious, so this was a big problem when trying to determine the proper pronunciation of new words. Oddly, other sizes of the Langenscheidt Italian dictionaries do indicate stress, but I couldn't find one that was both compact and complete enough for me. So, I ended up returning this book and going with the Oxford Minidictionary instead.
