Book Description
Will markets, investment, and technology--rather than tanks and missiles--be the key elements in the new world order? When politics catches up with the global whirlwind of shifting economic capabilities, the international system will look very different than how it does today. This book
explores how the momentous dislocations of economic power in the world--the might of Asia, the unification of Europe, the relative decline of the United States--will reshape global security issues. The authors explain power and interests are changing and how the loss of industrial and technological
leadership is undermining the exercise of American power. They demonstrate how these changes may presage an entirely new era that would reconceive the very nature of security, redefine the international power game, and resituate its players. This volume first sets the stakes--drawing the links
between economic capacities and security. Then the players are covered, detailing the relative positions of Asia, Europe, and United States. The book concludes with a warning that the emerging distribution of economic capabilities does not insure a natural extension of the present international
security arrangement. At least two other directions are possible, each implying not only new security concerns at home, but a transformation in the international security system as a whole.

Still relevant and interesting.......2001-03-16
In this book, published in 1992, a group of academics from the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy have written a series of brilliant and provocative essays on the economic foundations of the next security system, that is, of the XXI century. They define three broad scenarios: a) Controlled multilateralism; b) coexistence of blocks; and c) neomercantilism.
So far, it seems that they were right in predicting that the most likely and desirable outcome would be some form of controlled multilateralism. Certainly, it could be said that coexistence of blocks is also a reality, but we are seeing a lot more interrelation between these blocks than what the scenario took into account. Some countries have built institutional bridges across the blocks, like Mexico, which belongs to NAFTA, but also has a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, several Latin American countries, Israel, and is now negotiating one with Japan, beyond its membership in APEC.
The security system seems to stay also within controlled multilateralism, as actions on the former Yugoslavia and Irak show. Summing up, the book's arguments and points are still relevant to analyze the world's options regarding this new century. The interplay between the economic and the security systems are clearly defined, and the tone of the book is objective, neither overly optimistic nor pessimistic. It's good analysis, even if not each and every detail is still accurate. Recommended for students of very different specialties: international economics, national security, prospective studies, etc.

Book Description
The number of pet and breeding birds in captivity and in ornamental and zoological collections has increased dramatically in the past 30 years. With the growth in the bird owning public comes a corresponding growth in the number of veterinarians providing care for birds. Avian veterinarians and bird owners depend on the pathologist to make an accurate diagnosis and provide advice on the significance of their findings.Diseases of pet and aviary birds differ significantly from those of poultry and from many of the common diseases seen in wild birds - even wild birds of the same species. Pathology of Pet and Aviary Birdsoffers a comprehensive review of the gross and histologic features of the diseases of pet and aviary bird, provides a guide to ancillary diagnostics, presents a context in which to interpret the pathologic findings, andhelps to create an understanding of the pathogenesis of the clinical manifestations of disease. The material is organized by system so that the pathologist faced with a diagnostic challenge involving a particular organ can go to the appropriate chapter, rather than having to search through extraneous listings under etiology or by bird species.Pathology of Companion and Aviary Birds is an indispensable reference for avian practitioners and students of avian medicine, veterinary pathologists and pathology trainees who will be engaged in diagnostic pathology or research on avian diseases.

Book Description
The macaque monkey uses the hand to grasp, digitally explore, and identify objects within reach, and to use them intelligently. This review is focused on the topography and connections of some of the neuron populations that determine this manual dexterity. In the last decade these neuron populations have been analyzed using modern axon tracer techniques, single neuron recording in the alert monkey, and PET, resulting in a serious reconsideration of their structural and functional organization, and their roles in voluntary action. This review critically examines some of the new ideas triggered by these observations.

Customer Reviews:
Not For Those Who Wish To Build Boats.......2006-07-05
The book is filled with stories about boats, not about boat building techniques or anything really of use to someone who is interested in building plywood boats, buyer beware! This title is misleading.
Opinionated and Informative.......2005-07-13
One day I dream of building the sailboat that will carry me through my retirement years; to that end, I've read a lot of books on boatbuilding, and encountered a lot of strong opinions. And of all the modern-day authors I've read, few are more opinionated than Thomas Firth Jones.
Jones doesn't mince words when giving his opinions of designers, materials, or other builders. He's very critical of the stitch-and-glue method, and of builders like Sam Devlin, who strongly favors it- although that didn't stop him from modifying one of Devlin's designs to fit his building style. He is very critical of Phil Bolger's popular small sailboats, though he counts Bolger as a friend, and is effusive in his compliments of Bolgers' powerboat designs.
Jones didn't start building boats until he was 40, although he spent a lifetime as a woodworker, and he seems to be very much an autodidact who taught himself a good deal of what he knows about boatbuilding. He's not afraid to describe mistakes he made along the way, or to describe some of his designs as failures. In general, his opinions are backed by experience and experiment. There are exceptions, of course. His knowledge of kayaks, and of kayak paddles, is poor, which wouldn't bother me if he didn't make sweeping generalizations about the optimum paddle for a boat. And his opinions about economics are startlingly ignorant. He doesn't appear to have read much or spoken to many people with different views, and (for example) dismisses Phil Bolger's libertarianism in an almost condescending manner.
But those few points aside, this book- and Jones' earlier book- are a treasure trove of ideas about design and construction, and a very useful addition to anyone's boatbuilding library.
New Plywood Boats.......2004-01-27
Great book, with provisions... For someone with some previous knowledge about boat building, design and terminology this can be a very enjoyable and inspiring book. The boats covered in this book cover a broad range of types, for paddle, oar, sail and power. The information on them however ranges from brief descriptions with hand drawn scetches to fairly complete plans with offsets suitable for someone with previous knowledge of boatbuilding to be able to build from. One would not expect all of the boats to be fully described in plans because some of the boats are not the authors own designs but are included to illustrate the authors experience or modifications of the design. The book was well worth the modest price for me for the one design alone, the 9 foot "Dandy Dingy" which is one of the ones with adequate plans. This boat looks to be fairly easy to build and cute as could be.
Nice retrospective... but not too informative.......2003-06-12
Author rambles on about various old designs and the philosophies of the designers/builders, interspersing a few fuzzy B&W pictures and snippets of hull profiles. Might be interesting to the history buff, but if you want clear, relevant information on how to build a wooden boat... this book isn't for you. There are many others to choose from - I'd recommend Buehler's Backyard Boat Building and Gerr's Strength of Boats as two helpful books I've read so far.
New Plywood Boats.......2001-09-04
It follows the style of Mr. Jones prior book "Low Resistance Boats/ Boats to Go". It is informative on the different methods of building boats and the advantages and disadvantages. It is especially informative to those like myself who often ponder building a wooden boat and have pre-conceived notions that we are going to use "traditional methods". Tom has tried a great variety of methods and candidly admits that some of his pre-conceived notions and methods did not always turn out as he expected. He also describes how modern methods and materials can be used to build boats with a tradional appeal and why traditional is traditional and not always practical.

Al Hirschfeld is one of the greatest caricaturists ever to have put pen to paper, and this monumental retrospective is a testament to his genius. From '30s icons like actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine to the stars of Seinfeld, Hirschfeld's fluid line has limned some of the most enduring images of our favorite entertainers. The collection opens with a biographical essay by New York Times writer Mel Gussow that sketches the arc of Hirschfeld's career and the development of his reputation as a chronicler of American show business. Additional essays by Arthur Miller, Kurt Vonnegut, Whoopi Goldberg, and Hirschfeld's daughter Nina cast further light on the artist, but the bulk of the book is, of course, given over to his wonderful drawings. Hirschfeld has written that it is his aim to capture character, rather than caricature, and each of the hundreds of images reproduced here encapsulates its subject perfectly, without ever resorting to cruelty. After more than six decades, Hirschfeld has recorded the careers of generations of performers, and this collection further illuminates his work by including comments on each drawing by the artist himself, providing a delightful personal history of Broadway, Hollywood, and all points in between. --Simon Leake
Book Description
Over 400 Hirschfeld drawings and photographs - many never before collected. Includes essays by Whoopi Goldberg, Arthur Miller, Mel Gussow, Kurt Vonnegut, Grace Mirabella, Louise Kerz Hirschfeld and more! Commentary by Hirschfeld throughout.

Hirschfeld 101.......2007-03-14
What a joy of a book. Not just the great grafics but very interestng information about the Great Hirschfeld
It's All Here..........2004-06-30
Here is the indispensible Hirschfeld book - a must for any fan of his work, or of line in general. From his earliest pieces, all the way through his long career with New York theatre, his work is showcased - and done so through his eyes. Each piece is described by this great artist - his inspirations, methods, and thoughts. I cannot imagine a better way to present his wonderful drawings, and I am so very, very thankful that this collection was printed before his death. Although, yes, the work would show just as beautifully without, his commentary alongside each piece just opens up an entirely new viewpoint. This is a truly timeless book, and I highly recommend it.
An Amazing Gallery; An Extraordinary Career.......2003-02-02
Al Hirschfeld rose above titles like "cartoonist" and "illustrator", and every other tag specifically applied to visual artists who inject design and humor into their work. His intelligent blend of the caricaturist's eye and the designer's sense of the beauty in flat forms add up to an entirely unique contribution to twentieth century popular culture- and a highly influential one. His recent passing at age 99 marks the end of the century that he witnessed and commented upon so wittily and so stylishly. His legions of admirers (and imitators) will be well served by this 1999 book, assembled by the artist himself, with an excellent selection from his career, his invaluable commentary, and a fairly satisying selection of his amazing (and less celebrated) color work. The reproductions are fine here, and the volume is designed and presented well. It can only be hoped that more comprehensive releases and reissues of earlier books are in the near future.
"Nina".......2000-01-15
I really enjoyed looking through this book. I am absolutely in love with theater and I love seeing how he depicts all of my favorite shows and actors. He's been through the "Golden Age" of theater and has also done so much work for modern entertainment. I also have tons of fun looking for all the hidden "Nina"s. Just in case you might not know what I'm talking about, let me explain. After his daughter was born, Hirschfield began hiding her name in his drawings. The number by his "signiture" indicates the number of "Nina"s in the drawing. "Nina" is also written all in caps. Because of this, this book is not going to be just some ordinary coffee table book that only his fans might check out. It could also be a great deal of amusement for those who like to play the kind of "Where's Waldo" games.
A delightful collection of Hirschfeld's caricatures.......1999-05-26
I bought this book as a gift for my husband, and I fell in love with with the book myself. I recently visited the Delaware River Museum and saw my first in-person Hirschfeld line drawing of George C. Scott housed in the museum. Mr. Hirschfeld captures a personality with the stroke of a few lines. This book is wonderful. It has inspired my husband, a professional artist, to study Mr. Hirschfeld's style, and I found my husband doing line drawings yesterday. Packed with 400 drawings and photographs, this is a "must have" book for any Hirschfeld follower.
