Designed to be used in any course which is devoted wholly or partly to the study of multicultural education in the United States, this text provides a unique theme (intersecting cultures) from which to look at multicultural education issues. The book provides a comprehensive study of the intersections of the dominant U. S. culture, the culture of economic opportunity, dominated cultures, immigrant cultures, school culture, racism, sexism, social class, multicultural curricula, and instructional methods in the United States and the global economy. The study of cultures is filled with rich examples of the lives of the many cultural groups living in the United States. The author uses a problem-posing prose that helps students think about issues of multiculturalism. Each chapter ends with a section on personal reflections which is designed to help students relate multiculturalism to their own lives. The second edition contains two new chapters (“Immigrant Cultures” and “Multiculturalism in the Global Economy”) and a wealth of new topics designed to make the revision a comprehensive survey of multiculturalism and of proposed solutions to multiculturalism issues.

This book is terrible. 101 Drills that are totally useless. I did not get anything out of this book. Everything was very simple and common knowledge. The diagrams were very poorly layed out so that many drills would be impossible to duplicate. Definitely do not recommend.

An Excellent Text.......2004-09-02

I have used this text in my own critical thinking course over a dozen times. The text may be more challenging than others, but it is also more rewarding. The emphasis of the text is on developing our linguistic skills to be on par with our already-developed reasoning skills. This makes us more reflective, and more articulate, reasoners. The book uses examples culled from newspapers which makes for engrossing student activities. This also helps students see the relevance of applying the material outside the classroom.

One note of caution on the printing: If possible, buy the third printing (or any printing beyond the third). The first two have several compositing errors which seemed to have slipped by the copy editors. Though these don't detract from the reading of the text, they can be slightly distracting in the learning process.

A LOVELY PRODUCTION.......2003-10-05

Unless you have a couple of thousand to plunk down on the first edition of the Idylls, published by Moxon, in the 1860s, in four folio volumes, then this edition is the next best thing. The illustrations are lovely and help to uplift Tennyson's verse. In fact, Dore becme so popular that this edition was often referred to at the time as "The Dore Tennyson," and rightfully so. Dore ismakes Tennyson's verse much better than it actually is; Tennyson, even though great, has a tendency to be somewhat maudlin and laboured in his retellikng of Idylls. If you enjoy Arturian Verse, I suggest you examine Swinburne's work in this area, or the little known Charles Williams, a contemporary of Swinburne's and in this reviewer's opinion the finest Arthurian poet of all. William Morris and Matthew Arnold have also done some interesting things.

Some of Arthurian Legend's Most Exquisite Illustrations.......2001-11-27

Gustave Dore first published these intricate and beautiful wood-engraved book illustrations for Alfred, Lord Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" in the 1860s. Though many, many fabulous illustrations have been created for the legends of King Arthur and his Court these still remain among the finest. This book contains 36 black and white plates, each 7 1/2" x 10" and thus nicely sized for optimal viewing of the exquisite detail. A corresponding excerpt from "Idylls of the King" is printed on the facing page of each plate. Dore captured the grandeur and opulence of courtly life, the mystery and magic of the legendary times of Arthur and Merlin, the medieval costumes, furnishings and architecture all with a brilliance that will transport you. Highly recommended!

Pictures of oil as the glittering prize, the source of global power and empires, or the hub of an energy crisis have gushed through the media since 1973. What actually happened was very different. M. A. Adelman had written in 1970 that "the genie is out of the bottle," that a group of oil producing countries would control the oil trade to raise prices. Now, twenty-five years later, he has written the fascinating history of the greatest monopoly ever known. The underlying economic analysis is contained in the companion volume The Economics of Petroleum Supply.

Oil was in oversupply in 1970. The oil companies could not keep prices from falling. But the members of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) could and did raise prices by restraining output. However, they first had to restrain each other: an endless task, since each of them would gain by cheating on the others. With open and secret agreements, formal and informal, they "tried to fine-tune with coarse instruments," resulting in the so-called energy crisis.

Adelman describes the first timid steps to the "unbound cartel." He shows how the producing nations overestimated their power, why they had short time horizons and raised the prices too high for their own good. But after prices declined, then crashed in 1986, the producing nations managed to hold a lower price level. Despite the trillions of petrodollars that fed two major wars, Adelman observes that nearly all OPEC nations are in debt. Non-OPEC production grows, but the cartel survives and the unstable market with it.

Price hawks and doves may be good copy, Adelman notes, but in fact there was never an Arab "embargo" against the United States, nor any moderating influence by the United States. Since we must in our own interest protect the Persian Gulf producers, they understandably do nothing to oblige us.

The book was purchased for background information on oil price movements and their effects on the economy for a graduate level business course. The book was helpful in providing background on energy policy and how OPEC came to gain a large measure of control over world oil supplies and as a direct result oil prices. The text is a bit dry as could be expected. The author does manage to keep a rather complex subject interesting to the reader and provides a unique perspective into oil prices, government policies and the power that control over a large portion of the world's energy supply provides.
