Tools for Leading Change and Earning Real Results.......2006-09-26
"Whole Scale Change: Unleashing the Magic in Organizations" and "Whole Scale Change Toolkit" introduce straightforward, systematic, and applicable approaches to successfully achieving effective change in human organizations. While most people acknowledge that changes are necessary and also recognize that changes are often resisted, based on the low success rate of effective change, few people appear to understand the dynamics of achieving progressive change. In the context of human organizations as functioning systems, Dannemiller Tyson Associates: define the dynamics of organization al change, acknowledge to forces for and against change, recommend constitutes whose collaboration and support must be earned, and describe practical processes for planning, executing, and institutionalizing organizational changes. To earn the reader's confidence, the authors use real world examples that demonstrate how "whole scale change" has worked in everyday organizations.
I highly recommended "Whole Scale Change: Unleashing the Magic in Organizations" and "Whole Scale Change Toolkit" for everyone working to achieve change in their organizations.
Step by step script to bring Whole-Scale in practice.......2001-05-09
This book is the complement to "Whole-Scale Change: Unleashing the Magic in Organizations". It won't be of much use without the other volume, since it describes in small detail (by the hour) how to run a whole-scale workshop, the preparatory sessions, etc. However, if you want to bring it in practice, than you HAVE to buy this book. I'm amazed that consultants are giving away such a treasure chest of information: if you have "what it takes", you can really *do* this without needing their help (of course, some emotional intelligence, as explained in "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence", will be of help.)
What a Resource!.......2000-11-25
Occasionally a book comes along written in a way that is really useful. This is one of them. Complete, fully sharing the technology of change in organizations, the experienced practitioner - as well as the distressed CEO or executive - can find concrete actions to take to bring about a new release of creativity and energy with people. It helps frame the mind-set of commitment and passion that make such efforts work. Not for the faint-hearted, these ideas will require courage and commitment, a trust in people and a willingness to change one's self as well as giving permission for change in others. This is a real "How-To" book, to support and bring about visionary changes such as those described in "Whole-Scale Change; Unleashing the Magic in Organizations"
Book Description
'Homology' as a concept became increasingly elusive during the course of the 20th century. The central debates and controversies concern both fundamental definitions and the nature of the criteria by which homology is judged. Attempts to move away from comparative morphology to ideas based on developmental pathways have tended to founder on the fact that developmental pathways evolve and that similar cells or tissues or structures in animals will often have different developmental origins. The use of information about conserved molecules in seemingly conserved developmental processes has also proven controversial.
In molecular biology, the use of the term 'homology' has given rise to more debate, although here the issue seems to involve primarily the criteria for assessing whether parts of genes are the same because of shared descent or for other reasons. The contributions to the book explore these topics systematically. There are chapters on the historical development of the concept of homology and its use in population studies. Other chapters deal with issues of homology in morphological and developmental studies, in behavioural studies, and especially in studies at the level of molecular genetics.
Customer Reviews:
Phew, what a mess! But it's fun........1999-02-18
As Dr. David Wake put it in a review of this book, homology is a concept that serves too many masters. Choose your favorite definition and run with it, but read this book first to shop around for different definitions. They're all in there, from Roth to Goodwin to Rieppel or Shubin. Many different perspectives, little agreement or hope for resolution.

Book Description
William Edwards, Ph.D. had a passion about animals that began when he was a child in the raw-nature environmentof Roosevelt, Utah, in the Unita Basin. As a teacher in Roosevelt, and later at Hillcrest High School in Salt Lake city and the University of Utah, he inspired many hundreds of students to see animals in a new and caring way. He brought to his biology classroom, and housed there, many types of animals so students could see them as real living creatures and learn about them. Bill Edwards tells of one such animal in his new book. A prairie dog, orphaned as a tiny baby, was found barely creeping across the road by biology teacher Bill Edwards. Rescued from certain death, kept alive by milk from the family cat, little Perry, with his clever and comical ways, became a treasure to hundreds of students. Being surrounded by animals of every description, Perry did not know he was a prairie dog until a female prairie dog was brought to school to be his companion. No one suspected Pery's destiny. An inspiring and captivating true story.

A real life story Excellent and almost unbelievable........2000-02-20
This story could only happen to a dedicated lover of all creatures. A biology teacher with a passion for his work comes across a baby Prairy Dog. The mother was dead, so he takes it home and gives it the care necessary to keep it alive. When the baby was strong enough he took it to school and shared the experiences with his students. This tale is so fascinating that I was happy that it was a short story, because I couldnt put it down until I read the entire story. What a life this Prairie Dog led. Great story I recommend it to everyone, regardless of their age.
Book Description
Fear lives among Everest's mighty ice-fluted faces and howls across its razor-sharp crags. Gnawing at reason and enslaving minds, it has killed many and defeated countless others. But in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay stared into its dark eye and did not waver. On May 29, they pushed spent bodies and aching lungs past the achievable to pursue the impossible. At a terminal altitude of 29,028 feet, they stood triumphant atop the highest peak in the world. With nimble words and a straightforward style, New Zealand mountaineering legend Hillary recollects the bravery and frustration, the agony and glory that marked his Everest odyssey. From the 1951 expedition that led to the discovery of the Southern Route, through the grueling Himalayan training of 1952, and on to the successful 1953 expedition led by Colonel John Hunt, Hillary conveys in precise language the mountain's unforgiving conditions. In explicit detail he recalls an Everest where chaotic icefalls force costly detours, unstable snow ledges promise to avalanche at the slightest misstep, and brutal weather shifts from pulse-stopping cold to fiendish heat in mere minutes. In defiance of these torturous conditions, Hillary remains enthusiastic and never hesitates in his quest for the summit. Despite the enormity of his and Norgay's achievement, he regards himself, Norgay, and the other members of his expedition as hardworking men, not heroes. And while he never would have reached the top without practiced skill and technical competence, his thrilling memoir speaks first to his admiration of the human drive to explore, to understand, to risk, and to conquer.

Armchair Mountaineer Loves It.......2007-10-12
This is Hillary's engaging first person account of his Everest Summit.
Overall impression: The first and latter chapters are by far the best. The second and third chapters contain surveying narratives which didn't engage me all that much. I read the book in two days whenever I had a moment to read it... I had it with me at all times because I was dying to read the next page. Great book.
What I loved about it: By the time you get to the final two chapters, you feel like you are summitting with them. I knew they would make it, of course, but while you are reading you have this suspention of reality and there are moments where you just don't see how they can possibly make it. The description of what he was thinking in these unchartered regions kept me glued! Also, the description and map of the Khumbu icefall left my jaw dropped. These were very brave men!
What I didn't like about it: The descriptions of the treks between the camps on everest (back and forth, back and forth) tended to blend together. I felt like he could have cut some of that narrative (i.e. going back for more supplies, checking on people, etc..)
Conclusion: You won't regret buying the book. I can't help but think his goal was to include everything he could remember just to get it documented, even if some of the information doesn't necessarily advance the story you were expecting to read. It's 70% thrill and 30% redundancy or extranias information. Still a great book.
Here is one thing that nags me though. THE BIG QUESTION: Hillary was competitive. He admits he was happyt to hear that the Swiss team did not summit. He was not assigned to be the first of his team to summit, yet he does not tell us he was dissapointed by that decision! C'mon! He MUST have been. Also, when the first team failed, he didn't admit that a part of him was happy that he had his shot to be the first! That seems like normal human behavior and also fitting with his previous comments. The fact that he didn't talk about his emotions during those events tells me he doesn't want to come off as a bad sport.

Wonderful book, written very matter-of-factly.......2006-09-25
(I read the hard-cover edition which is not in stock at Amazon at the time of writing this.)
The outcome of the adventure - the first successful summit climb of Everest - is a well-known fact. However, Hillary's telling of the story makes a gripping tale, well worth reading. Sometimes the matter-of-fact narration makes you think those climbs and hazards were really easy. A look at the black and white photos (in the paperback edition I have, these are separate plates) of the ice walls and crevasses dispels such fantasies! Even following well-trodden routes up the Everest is no mean task; it is awe-inspiring to read about the route-finders' story in first person.
The book talks about not only the actual climb of Everest, but events leading up to it for the previous two years. Some of these are amazing feats of strength and courage, and give an understanding of the spirit of the original pioneers. For instance, Hillary and his friend ford various rivers in full monsoon strength - they not only ford it once, but ferry across terrified porters with massive loads, multiple times. They spend days together fording such rivers and helping porters across with their luggage. All this only to reach the foothills of the Himalayas, this is only the precursor to the actual climbing. Then almost as an aside, Hillary talks about rafting down a river and being caught in a whirlpool.
The tone of the book remains light and easy. Hillary describes reaching the summit as a moment of quiet satisfaction, nothing over-dramatized. The story talks for itself I guess, there's no need for adding drama to it.
I'm On Top Of The World!.......2006-02-17
HIGH ADVENTURE is Sir Edmund Hillary's engaging and somewhat self-effacing account of the first recorded successful Everest ascent in 1953.
An earlier reviewer describes Hillary as "a bigot," I suppose because he describes the Sherpas he worked with as "coolies." Of course, HIGH ADVENTURE was written in 1955, when attitudes were much different. And Hillary, far from being self-aggrandizing, seems to shun the spotlight.
Certainly, Hillary makes fairly little of his pre-Everest climbs, although they undoubtedly made him a splendid mountaineer. His lyrical voice for settings and experiences is fine, though never as poetical as Peter Matthiessen in THE SNOW LEOPARD, who traversed much of the same ground.
One of the shortcomings of this book is the lack of an Afterword in the new edition. One has to wonder what Hillary thinks of Everest's now chintzy, clockworked guided climbs. For a view from today's polluted top of the mountain read Jon Ktrakauer's INTO THIN AIR.
Exciting mountaineering tale.......2004-06-27
It seems to me that Hillary's account of his Everest summit is honestly written. I found his writing style engaging, not because it was good, per say, but because it seemed to be a normal guy saying what he felt needed to be said. His style and opinions were very 1950's, and I don't think he meant any harm to anyone, sherpas and whatnot. I liked it. The fact that Hillary never saw a mountain until he was 16 makes me think I have a shot at Everest someday...
Terrible in all respects........2004-04-16
Hillary is a self-serving bigot, unworthy of his fame. I was always weary of Hillary, reading this book sealed it. He constantly bad-mouths the porters who took him to the various summits of Nepal (other than Everest); he is always quick to point out he was 'first to wake'; 'first to lead'; etc. The book was published in 1955, two after the ascent. During that time, Tenzing was receiving more fame than Hillary. Jealously took root to write this terribly constructed book.
Recommended, however, to see just how self-righteous Hillary is.
P.S. Hillary didn't summit Everest first - Tenzing did (or perhaps George Mallory). Also, the cover of the book is not of Hillary and Tenzing on the summit, as some believe. It's at Camp XI.

Big things really do come in small packages! It is no exaggeration to say that today one cannot discuss Japanese manga techniques without touching on figure stylization methods. This book thoroughly explores this topic, starting with the thought process and techniques used to draw the characters known in Japanese as "chibi." Most English-speaking fans call them "superdeformed," or "SD" for short-those oh-so-cute, smaller-than-life characters who are always stealing scenes in such anime favorites as Chobits, Dragonball, and SD Gundam.

Cute and helpful........2005-11-26
This book goes over the basic stuff like how to do the head, the basics of the body, expressions, the difference between a regular manga charater and a chibi(nother word for Super Deformed charater)ect. Then it goes over the details like making fat people, skinny people, how and when to use chibis in comics,so on. It was a great book besides the fact there were a few naked chibis here and there (thats why I gave it four stars) but still worth buying!
~*~Purin~*~
It was very informative, and nicely done..........2005-08-23
There were many different things that they talked about in this book, all regarding the drawing of 'deformed characters'. I found all that I needed to in this book, although there were some things (like some little 'in the nude' drawings) that made me lose some focus...
SD or Chibi Characters are NOT just Kids' Drawings!.......2005-01-27
Many people think chibi (or SD) characters are a kind of an art (i.e. gag) itself or that it’s so easy to draw, there is no such need for a book on this topic. It is, but chibi characters doesn’t necessary have to be used in gag or parody works; real life mangaka do sometimes use chibi characters in their works to liven up the atmosphere, especially when funny or comical parts are involved. Also, there’re many “secrets” which makes for a highly successful (cute or funny) chibi character. It can therefore be said that chibi characters can be considered an essential part of Manga, unless of course, you plan to do an entirely “serious” manga that doesn’t involve any humor or chibi characters.
This is where this book comes in. Wonderfully organized with many details, hints and tips to drawing a successful and lively chibi character, the book is both engaging and enriching from the beginning to the end. The book first explains the characteristics of chibi characters, before moving on to how to draw chibi characters’ eyes, noses, mouths and even ears. The book also touches on the actions, poses and expressions of chibi characters, and also offers you advices on how to make your character even more Q! (or cute!). Apart from the characters, there’re also tips on deforming other things and props such as background, robots, trees, and even cars! Whew!
Not to forget, there is a special bonus at the back of the book where you can mix and match everything in the face to get your own chibi character’s look and at the same time, hone your skill.
Although it’s mentioned here that the reading level is for ages 9-12, I would like to emphasize again, chibi or super deformed characters doesn’t just mean kids’ drawings or drawings for kids, if you ARE serious about manga drawing, chibi characters is one area you’ll need to work on as well. A highly valuable, constructive and entertaining book; I recommend this book to anyone serious in manga drawing! ^^
about time for book like this to came out.......2004-09-28
Many typical Anime character designs feature heads that are just somewhat larger than would be proprotionally correct. is known as Super-deformed characters, SD for short or Chibi in japanese exagerate this deformation in the goal of appearing cute and funny.Artists often Super Deform characters in order to show an extreme change in the characters' mood. the goal of the animators is always comedic cuteness. Often done at the punchline of a joke for an extra comedic oomph. In this book its cover all the basics you need to know about this japanese style what covers in manga.I give it five stars because there no other book i know cover such a area
Pretty Good .......2004-08-11
well This Manga book is not like the other manga books . This kinda like a special editon . Mostly I would recomend it for more avanced Manga Drawers . If you are just a starter I would recommend Geting started. the first book of manga. It really tells you to draw Chibis (really tiny people) . If you are expeting how to draw bodys, and comics or proffional Manga . You don't want get this book . But If you want to learn all about to draw chibis ,(very small or deformed humans) how thier moves , Faces , Eyes ect. But it pretty Good for people who want to draw chibis . Chibis are a different type of Manga . It is not like the drawings in Pokemon , Salior Moon , and Yu-Gi-Oh . Pokemon , Salior Moon , Yu-Gi- Oh are too serious and drama like manga . What this book contains is a manga what is more childesh like and not very serious or dramatic.
