Moreover, it offers a framework for addressing the challenge of ecologically sustainable growth. Complex product systems, such as energy, transportation, and health, are a consequence of past and present technology RandD choices and corresponding investements in technical education. Thus capability and skill development policies shape what is on offer in the marketplace.

The engine of growth: cluster dynamics.......2002-08-11

In the 1970s and 1980s, the competitiveness of American economy seemed to be eroded away in the face of Japanese challenge. But all of a sudden, applauded Japan lost its way in the 1990s and by middle of the decade, American industries resurged. This book is one of attempts to explain such dramatic rise and fall, and find the underlying mechanism of industrial success stories. The author demands us to delve into the regional growth dynamics to solve those puzzles. Best attributes the rise and fall of nation economies to the underlying dynamics of local clusters. The unit of analysis in conventional economics is either the economy or the individual (including firm). But such approaches haven't provided acceptable explanations. Michael Porter argues the basic unit of analysis should be the industry, to understand competitiveness and productivity. Actually Michael Porter's conception of competitive advantage, cluster has been widely adopted in 1990s. Competitive advantage of the firm is created and sustained through local competition in its industry, Porter maintains. But local industry is not isolated from other local industries. It's connected to clusters of industries through vertical and horizontal relationships. Cluster is firm's home base environment. For example, Porter argues that, in "Can Japan COmpete?" , Japanese industry, like auto or electronics, is competitive where its backing cluster is strong, while uncompetitive, like petrochemicals or aerospace, where backing cluster is weak. Cluster is the ecology of the firm. And firm's competitive advantage is shaped in its ecology. Advantages in its ecology are necessary for achieving and sustaining competitive success. For Porter, rivalry between leading firms in the local is the driver and the weapons to compete comes from the local environment. The firm read and identify the market opportunities and shape its strategy to exploit the opportunities and mobilize the resources from the local cluster. So the firm is the real actor in the economic drama, Porter points out. But ironically, the internal organization of the firm does not feature in Porter's cluster.To construct the acceptable framework to explain the cluster dynamics, Best argues the firm should be given the due role in economic drama. Here comes the Schumpeterian entrepreneur. There are so many clusters. But there are few successful cluster like Silicon Valley. Few develop the regional growth dynamics. In competition between the two regions, the higher productive region will create regional competitive advantage. The difference lies in a few driver or creator of cluster dynamics: the entrepreneurial firm. To the entrepreneurial firm, competition is not price-based but product-based. To do so, the entrepreneurial firm pursues market niches by developing unique production capabilities, often of a technological form, to differentiate its product from competitors. In turn, the process of such developing precipitates new market opportunities to guide the new product development. Capturing those opportunities leads to another round of developing production capabilities. We could identify such process in Japanese practice of kaizen. In the Japanese production system, production process and developing process are integrated. Best calls it as technology management. In kaizen system, the innovation of technology is systemized in production process so developing technology is not one-off event but continuous process. The production is the process not only of producing product but also of finding new knowledge. In short, the entrepreneurial firm refers to a few firm in cluster with the dynamics of such virtuous circle. Best call it technology/market dynamic. The internal dynamics of the entrepreneurial firm induces the regional cluster dynamics. It's a virtuous circle too. No firm, no matter how big, can pursue all technological possibilities it created. Apple could not make all the peripherals for its Apple computer, like applications, printers, monitors and so on, on its own. Apple had not enough resources to make all of them. Those were possibilities to other firms opened up by Apple. And Apple PC was itself the given-up possibility by Xerox. Those are not pursued internally become market opportunities for other firms, resulting in so-called Silicon Valley effect. New small entrants can exploit new technology capability, advance the emerging technology and develop the new market. The entrepreneurial firm start-up system is particularly strong in the Silicon Valley and Route 128. Best attributes the resurgence of American economy to such cluster dynamics.

A Good Exercise for Excellent Readers........2004-03-23

This is not an introductory level text. It is well worth the effort required to read it. The author lays a subtle trap in chapter 1. Just as you are ready to agree that Programmed Cell Death could not have evolved in Unicellular Organisms, he argues that Programmed Cell Death may have done just that! Programmed Cell Death in uni-cellular animals does seem counter-intuitive. But, so does the flight of the bumblebee.

A Review of When Cells Die.......2001-01-11

This is the best available review of the subject of cell death. It is both comprehensive and thorough including both vertebrate and invertebrate animals as well as plants It covers cell death as part of development, the cell cycle, the immune system and many diseases including cancer, CNS and myocardial ischemia and Alzheimer's disease. It also includes thoughtful analyses of evolution and death in single-celled organisms. The authors of individual chapters are experts in their fields and the editors have done a noteworthy task in organizing the book into a coherent whole. It is indispensable for students, fellows and senior investigators interested in the subject.

Nature is Wierd........2003-11-19

This book is quite small, but filled with interesting tidbits about all kinds of different animals. The book is divided into two page sections that talk about different parts of the body: ears, noses, eyes, tongues, teeth, feet, and body covers. Each section has a paragraph and a picture for each animal in the section. A couple things I learned from this book are that a jack rabbits' ears are so big because they help keep the rabbit cool by letting heat escape and a mole has feelers on it's nose!This book is great for 1st and 2nd grade readers, but younger children will enjoy listening and looking too.

I have been practicing the Cheng Man-Ching Form for about two and a half years. I have made a point of buying every book with the great man's name on the cover and this book is the one that I pick up and read more often than any other.

Plagued with mistakes, but it's an honest effort.......2007-07-03

After reading this book and thinking about it as a whole, I was led to give it a 3-star rating, but it could've been a 5-star rating, if the editing were much stronger.

Viewing the reviews listed here, I see various complaints about the book, but none of them address what I consider to be the most glaringly obvious things: the grammatical errors and the cultural fact errors--two things that could have been handled before the book even went to the printer. First, and I must admit that I don't know if England uses a different set of grammatical rules, there is a serious problem with subject verb agreement throughout the entire text, particularly with regard to collective nouns and singular nouns with a plural appearance. Aftab even changes around some of the quotes to fit this very jarring grammatical detour. (For example, "40 Acres and a Mule are...." While I teach composition, I still know the average reader could pick up on this, whether it's setting a word like "jury" or committee" against the plural verb form or something more complicated like the 40 Acres name.)

Next, there are numerous fact errors. Among them is a misquote of Louis Farrakhan ("good" should be "great"--and that quote is forever taken out of context, and I say that not to defend the man at all). He also has Tupac dying in 1995 after being shot five times, Carmello Anthony going straight to the pros from high school, alongside LeBron James (as opposed to leading Syracuse to a NCAA championship), and stating that Cash Money Records was Master P's record label (not No Limit).

These errors are very glaring, but I can best compare them to enjoying a class where a teacher insists on using screechy chalk on the blackboard, because overall I really liked the book. It took enormous effort to synthesize so much information into a highly readable biography. Don't get me wrong. It is far from perfect, but the linear layout and the quotes from various actors and Spike create a kind of balance so that it's not completely one-sided. And Aftab covers all of the media worthy hot topics that surrounded each of Lee's films so that when you finish the book, you will have gotten a strong glimpse into Lee's professional approach to filmmaking.

I'm pretty sure that Spike Lee's own journals from his films will ultimately prove to be more useful for a beginning filmmaker than this book. It does, however, have its merits.

A rare look into Spike Lee.......2007-01-03

For a man who stands out in a predominantly "white" profession, "That's my story" provides the reader with a rare glimpse into the mind of a genius. For Spike to allow this biography, he was sending the reader a message. Open up your eyes, and if you read between the lines, you will understand that Spike has been misunderstood for years, by the industry, media and his fans. He is a visionary, who has made his mark on all of us for years, we are just beginning to catch up to his genius finally.

Lee:
"Yes, I agree with that, BUT I'll go one step further and say that Bush doesn't care about people who don't have any money (whether they're black or white.) I guaranteed you that if this same disaster happened on Long Island or let's say The Hamptons, you would have had an entirley different response from FEMA and his administration."

But you should have seen how he said it, it was as if he was staring right into the camera with this smirk on his face. The dude is bold man, I'll give him that and I applaude him.

Spike said either black, white, Mexican, or asian.
But what he DIDN'T say was Italians!!

great book for indie filmmakers.......2006-04-16

I decided to write a short recommendation for this book because I almost did not buy it after reading some of the other online reviews. Luckily I did get this very well researched and well edited director biography (it is not an autobiography but rather an interview based biography resembling the "director on director" series) which focuses on the making of all of Spike Lee's features as well as on the history and development of his production company. Being an independent filmmaker myself I can only recommend this book and found it inspiring to hear of the success of someone who tried to make meaningful, personal and confrontational films and was not only interested in to "break into film and get rich" like so many 90's indie filmmakers. How to do this, make money without selling out and stay on the game for two decades shows this book in an engaging and inspiring way.

From his childhood and all throughout his film career, Spike Lee, born Shelton Jackson Lee, has been outspoken and opinionated. These solid traits, along with the sense of responsibility one acquires by being the oldest of five siblings, combined with education, talent, hard work, and great timing to produce one of the most recognized African-American film directors and producers to date. In SPIKE LEE: THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT, author Kaleem Aftab pens Spike's biography with such dedication and attention to details that readers will know everything one can know being on the outside looking into the life of Spike Lee: his upbringing, his college days, his first movies, his motivations, his financial trials, his political standpoints, his outlook on life, his recent films, and his goals. Although all is not rosy, Aftab still pulls back the cover and exposes details of Spike's life, before, after, and during the making of his films.

Starting with his childhood and then arranged by film, Aftab proves to have done excellent research as he provides readers with a plethora of facts about everyone Spike ever spoke to and/or dealt with and about how he started and got to where he is now. Offering insight into the motivations behind Spike's movies and good behind-the-scenes information, Aftab presents a novel that delves not just into Spike's life, but also illuminates certain well-known actors who Spike chose to work with: Bill Nunn, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, John Turturro, Danny Aiello, and Laurence Fishburne (to name a few). Readers really get a strong grasp of who Spike Lee is as Aftab talks about some of the filmmaker's classic New York outlooks and his perspectives on African-Americans, not just in film but also in life.

Extremely informational, SPIKE LEE, by Aftab, starts out slow and mundane. Aftab's writing style is not very intriguing or captivating for readers, which is a shame for it to be the biography of such an interesting figure. Also jumpy, it is difficult to keep up with what is going on. A section will begin discussing one event and will go off on a tangent about a list of people, who they are, and how they relate to Spike or the movie, and then jump back to the previous event. Transitional aids would help to make section themes flow better. A stronger narrative voice would also make information flow better. Throughout the biography, there are a plethora of quotes. Sometimes, a quote is so long and involved that it is easy for readers to forget that it is a quote, and jumping back to the narrator's voice once again throws off the flow of the text. As readers press on and become adjusted to Aftab's writing style, his composition creates a well-researched look into the life of one of America's prominent African-American directors/producers: Spike Lee.
