The basic idea of the real-time enterprise is to become quicker. A business which wants to become a real-time enterprise has to acquire three main abilities:
- Internal and external data is integrated quickly and in real time in a well-organized company data pool,
- Analyses of information in the company data pool can be obtained in real time, across function boundaries and at the touch of a button,
- The number of working steps performed in batch mode is shifting dramatically in favor of immediate completion in real time. The issue of communications - or real-time communications - plays a special role here. Studies have shown that processing times sometimes double when necessary communication events are handled in batch mode in the business process and not in real time. In other words, when an activity cannot be completed and lies around for days because an urgently needed partner cannot be contacted.
The necessity of acquiring these three abilities has implications for the process-related, technical and organizational aspects of a business that are dealt with in detail in this book.
Book Description
This book presents the Simon Visual Language - the first uniform visual language for business. Utilizing the Simon Tool, it enables "business architects," such as executives, planners, consultants, MBA's, engineers, and analysts, to communicate business concepts with blueprints. Business and technology strategies, initiatives, products, and organizations can be graphically depicted across an enterprise, replacing the current, awkward patchwork of words, spreadsheets, clipart, boxes, and arrows. Drawings created with the Simon Visual Language are thoroughly analogous to building construction plans; both use a tacitly understood visual language to communicate a vision and validate progress at all levels. The book explains the Simon Visual Language, its application to business, and how drawings and business blueprints are created. Michael Porter's Competitive Forces and Value Chain Analysis models, Balanced Scorecard, and other models are presented visually using the Simon Visual Language. The book also maps a sample project. This full-color book is produced entirely in the Simon Visual Language, attesting to the power of this approach to communicate with enhanced speed, efficacy, and aesthetics.

A must have book!!.......2005-06-15
This book along with the tool is incredible!!! It is easy to read and understand and more importantly teach/review with other non-technical users. I use it as a reference tool all the time. At first it was a little awkward to follow because of the non-standard format - especially if you are used to Visio-type diagrams. It only took but a day or so and we were off creating diagrams following the visual language.
If you work with end users, "C" level executives, directors or managers and need to get your vision and process presented, this is the material to do it with.
At one client's site, we have taken the old process maps and have "Simonized" them to more easily understand and identify specific design and process deficiencies.
I only wish this was available years ago.

The first volume, Evolutionary Genetics from Molecules to Morphology, honors Lewontin's more technical contributions to genetics and evolutionary biology. The volume contains an essay by Lewontin on Natural History and Formalism in Evolutionary Genetics, and an extended interview with Lewontin, covering the history of evolutionary genetics as seen from his perspective and exemplified by his career. The remaining chapters, contributed by former students, post-docs, colleagues, and collaborators, cover issues ranging from the history and conceptual foundations of evolutionary biology and genetics, to the implications of human genetic diversity, to the political economy of agriculture and public health.

Book Description
This book gives a concise account of the physiology and form of the fish circulatory system. The emphasis is primarily on function, but details of structure have been included. Following a revision of ideas on hemodynamics, attention is focused on the heart as the primary pump in the fish circulatory system. The fine structure and the electrical and ionic events of cardiac myocytes are described and the major events of the cardiac cycle are outlined. The structure of the peripheral vessels then follow and attention is devoted to the circulation in certain special areas such as the gills, the renal portal system, and the secondary blood system. There are also chapters devoted to the blood and the hemopoetic tissues and an account is given of the different types of retial systems that concentrate oxygen or heat in various parts of the body. Following a description of the autonomic nervous system, the circulatory responses to exercise and hypoxia are described. The book concludes with a discussion on the circulation of hagfish and how it illuminates our understanding of the functional and structural evolution of the circulatory system.

handy in a race, but not really waterproof.......2006-07-29
I have been looking for a quick 'cheat sheet' to use during some of our longer races. This is a very nice presentation, especially the last section where the author addresses quick things to try when you have problems (oh yea! the backstay!). It unfolds like a big road map, and is well organized (though there is a bit on rig tuning that is useful before, but not during the race).
The one drawback, is that though well laminated, I would call it weatherproof, not waterproof. it really hasn't held up as well as I'd like after being dropped into water on the cockpit floor.
Take care of it, and it will be good to you and your race.
Anything that gets your crew thinking about trim and speed is a good thing.
Good refrence guide........2005-09-08
Easily read by the crew on the way to the race. Items not understood offer a chance to discuss the finer points of sailing.

French verb conjugation made simple.......2007-01-12
This book will help you to master French verbs without doubt. This book achieves to present the intricate tense formation and use in a clear and simple format. It presents French tenses with clear definitions and well-created guided exercises. The book provides plenty of examples and practice exercises to master French verbs. The interactive CD is an excellent supplement to the text; it allows you to personalize the activities for specific needs. I use the CD to create my own flash cards and quizzes to practice words, and structures that were a challenge to me. I have one small problem with this book, even though the exercises are excellent and follow a clear format in the second part "French Verbs in Action" some tenses are presented in groups, which can be confusing and there are not practice exercises for some tenses. Since this is just a minor problem and the book goes well and beyond in presenting French verbs I will give it five stars.

Old Reliable.......2007-01-15
Lloyd Reynolds was a successful professor of calligraphy at Reed College where he was admired by professional calligraphers as well as his students. The book reflects his classroom practice and experience. The success of his students is testimony to his worldwide reputation.
As a teacher of art, including calligraphy, "Italic Calligraphy and Handwriting: Exercises and Text," has been my choice since 1970. The principle reason is its succinct text and focus on only Italic style.
Presentation is classic: left page directions, opposing page examples. Point by point, the logic of simple to complex takes the reader through workspace, comfort, tools, materials, and patiently leads to writing. Letters appear according to related construction, not alphabetically. For example, the letter O is made with two inked strokes and the letters a,e,d,g,q,b,p use the first or second stroke of O. Lower case letters are covered before upper case letters are addressed. Helpful excercises and reminders lead through the letters individually to the related subject of personal handwriting.
Low cost and convenient size are added benefits to the beginner
In short, the text works. Students learn and like it. They can and do succeed. That, to me, is its highest value.

The writing-book that's bigger inside than outside........1997-01-06
This book distills the life-work and teaching of one of the
most influential calligraphers and better-handwriting
crusaders of of our century into a manual small enough to
enter a jacket pocket without bulging. Brief text -- with a
wealth of hand-calligraphed illustrations -- takes the
budding pen-person from the basics of the ABC on to easy (yet
elegant) handwriting, fun projects, and even the essentials
of professional book-design.
The work surpasses many others in the care taken with
its letter-forms; also in the instructions for practice,
which are clear and "do-able" without being over-simplified.
Buyers of this book might like to know that information
on a companion video-tape series (taken from a TV course,
based on the book, which aired during the author's lifetime)
is available from Oregon Public Broadcasting (www.opb.org) --
I hope that AMAZON will soon carry this as well!
The only ways in which this book falls short of
perfection: /1/ some of the additional resources the text
and bibliography mention are no longer available from the
sources he gives, and /2/ there is perhaps not enough
attention given to solving a few of the calligraphy-pen
"snags" that cause problems for many beginners.
