    Book Description

This volume brings together 11 articles on Gustav von Schmoller, Max Weber, and Joseph Schumpeter. It aims to identify the methodological essence of the German Historical School (GHS) that flourished between the 1840s and the 1930s. Schmoller was a leader of the GHS, and Weber and Schumpeter, while not formally regarded as members of the GHS, are its spiritual successors in that they developed methodologies that helped resolve the controversy in method between history and theory, and in that they each practiced unique economic sociology designed as a synthesis of history and theory.

Yuichi Shionoya, the former president of Hitotsubashi University, brings a unique Japanese perspective to this historically significant and reemerging topic. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of economic history, economic sociology, evolutionary economics, and institutional economics.

    Book Description

"Get your life back!" says Joel Orr.

"If you work in an organization structured like a pyramid, you know that pyramids are places where great people are buried," says Dr. Joel Orr in his new book, Structure is Destiny: The Dandelion Paradox.

But what's the alternative to a pyramid? Orr says that companies recognized as great or excellent are project-oriented--and structured, at least in part, to resemble the structure of a well-functioning family--more like a dandelion than a pyramid!

"The kind of organization you're in sets the boundaries for your growth and satisfaction. Pyramids stifle humanity, and Dandelion structures liberate it," Orr says.

Why is that? Because, he says, "Organizations that respect the rights and abilities of their members--that work more like families--prosper, and allow their members to develop and grow. But hierarchical pyramids only want a piece of a person, and disregard the rest of him or her! That leads to trouble," says Orr.

"I use the dandelion as a model for the 'family-plan' kind of organization," says Orr. "And it turns out there's a lot we can learn from this spunky plant--the nemesis of lawn-growers everywhere, just because it is such a successful structure."

The book is full of practical advice on recognizing your situation, and actions you can take to reduce stress and increase productivity.

    What's paradoxical about the dandelion?

It's that one of the most successful living things on earth is also one of the most despised. Why? Because of its ågreat characteristics it's virtually unstoppable.

Joel Orr shows that the same qualities that make the dandelion unstoppable can make a business that adopts them unstoppable: It will be firmly rooted in human nature, and use everything that comes along to further its survival. And that's what is needed in these changing times: A structure that supports survival--whether our own, or our organization's.

The dandelion structure in human relations has enabled people and organizations to survive millenia of disasters--both natural and man-made. But the key to this survival and strength has largely been lost in our high-tech day. This book brings these principles back into our awareness.

When people have instinctively structured themselves or their organizations like the dandelion, they began to experience the power of their own natural greatness--in their lives, and in the lives of those around them.

Businesses that had structured at least part of themselves like the dandelion were termed "excellent" in "In Search of Excellence." That was a great book that defined "excellence." But it neglected to tell us HOW to be excellent because the study it described purposefully set out to ignore the structure of human relationships within the organization!

So when those companies called "excellent" tried to further improve themselves, they didn't know what it was they had done to make themselves "excellent" in the first place. So many of them eliminated the messy-looking dandelion parts of their organizations, and lost their greatness in short order, according to a Business Week study.

My three favorite features of "Structure is Destiny: The Dandelion Paradox" are:

    1. the interviews with people who have applied these principles of greatness to their personal lives and their companies, and

    2. the way these principles are described in detail, and from many points of view, so they can be applied by anyone, and in any situation, and

    3. the personal anecdotes.

The liberating effects of releasing greatness into the world are heady stuff. And this book shows a clear path to doing just that--for yourself, and for your organization.

    Thanks, Joel!

5 out of 5 stars It will help you know more about the natural world .......2006-10-15

This book is clearly written introduction to various aspects of the natural world. Colinvaux tells us why every species has its niche, why big fierce animals are rare. He discusses the efficiency of life, the nation state of trees, the social lives of plants. He asks why the sea is blue, takes a look at the ocean system, the regulation of the air, considers what hunting animals do, speaks about the social imperatives of space, and why there are so many species. He concludes with considerations of the stability of Nature, and People's place in it.
Among the most illuminating discussions for me was his explanation of the differences between the red- earth unfarmable land of the tropics, and the brown farmable earth of the temperate. His description of the relatively empty - of- life sea, the 'desert sea' as he calls it was also informative. His whole description of how size in plants and animals helps determine their overall frequency and mass was too , for me, something new.
Most of the subjects he writes about are ones I do not know enough to really question or contradict him about. But I can attest that the work is a tremendously interesting one.

5 out of 5 stars More ripping of flesh, please!.......2006-01-08

I was hoping for more accounts of big fierce animals doing battle with each other. Like a blue whale taking on a pride of lions or something, or several grizzlies attacking a hippo. This book was a little disappointing in this respect. However, I still give it 5 stars for evoked fierceness, if not actual fierce fierceness.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you always needed to know about ecology*.......2005-10-25

*But didn't know that you wanted to ask.

Actually, when I purchased this book from Princeton University Press, I thought it would be about the lives of tigers, leopards, jaguars and other big, fierce animals. I've read and enjoyed a few such zoological tomes over the course of a lifetime---on seagulls, on penguins, or koalas---though my usual fare lies in literature, history, travel, and anthropology. So, when I finally took Colinvaux's work off my shelf, I was rather surprised to find that it was about the whole circle of Life. I kept on reading though and now am glad I did. If you feel yourself lacking a scientific background, like your reviewer, and you have some basic curiosity about the field of ecology, this book is going to be just the ticket. The author has a genius for keeping it simple, keeping it clear. From the idea that every species has its niche, he expands to a host of other topics like the amazing inefficiency of plant life in converting available energy into growth (around 2%, compared to the efficiency of human-made engines, at least 20%); the grouping of trees in forests, the social life of plants; why the sea is blue (no life in it); the composition of soils in different parts of the world; how different sets of plant communities succeed one another as the environment changes; the peaceful coexistence of the vast majority of plants and animals instead of the vicious "law of the jungle" sometimes depicted in other literature. I'm just scratching the surface here. Many of the topics explored bear on the hot issues of the day, for instance global warming, pollution, and exploitation of earth's resources. Each topic is very understandable. If I were a high school or community college biology/ecology/botany teacher, I bet I could make a couple semesters' lectures out of this one book, it's that good. When the author tries to analyze human behavior and geopolitical rivalries on the basis of ecological principles in the last chapter, I think he falls between the cracks. Certainly human beings are animals only recently graduated from hunting and gathering. Their child-bearing habits must hark back to the Ice Age as Colinvaux says. But to try to predict human history on the basis of ecology alone is risky. The predictions made in the 1970s already look out of date. Other than this small criticism of one chapter, I heartily recommend this book. And it seems that the scary, ferocious Tyranosaurus rex (largest predator that ever lived) is a myth. It was a lazy carrion-eater. Ah well, sorry, Rex, you looked great in Jurassic Park !

      5 out of 5 stars An Ecologist's Perspective.......2005-01-03

The pages should read 246 plus index, not 264. Published by Princeton University Press, 1978. This book is 26 years old and still relevent. Paul Colinvaux takes a penetrating look at the science of ecology.

The author states in the introduction that "It is in Darwin's writings that one finds the true roots of ecology."

Chapter 3 answers the question posed in the title of the book. It is very well written and has an interesting section on "Tyranosaurus Rex."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation of ecological concepts.......2004-06-22

Colinvaux presents complex ecological concepts in a way that makes them accessible to an interested general reader. While it would be nice to see an updated edition of this book, it is an excellent overview of the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Oddly Organized by Location.......2004-10-19

I found that this book lacked organization by geographical region of Oregon. It has a good sized map of Oregon in the front with the various trips represented as a dot with a number in it. There are no city or county indications on the map. If you wanted to look for trips in Bend, you'd be guessing what trips are there. There are regional maps in the back, but I don't think there is an index into them. You just have to hunt around. I was thinking of kayaking in Bend on the stretch of the Deschutes from Wiki Up reservoir to Bend, the first easy section, which stops at the falls about 8 miles downstream. It shows the stretch on one map as easy but no mention is made of how to get there or what to expect.

It has a rather large index to its credit.

4 out of 5 stars Great Oregon Boating Reference Book.......2000-04-09

Paddling Oregon -along with Soggy Sneakers- are the two definative guide books about Oregon boating.

Paddling Oregon has a well-organized desciption of multiple runs of 92 different rivers. Included in each overview is information about the character, location, gradient, class and skill level and a list of appropriate craft for the run. Information about potential shuttle sources is also included.

Paddling Oregon is a comfortable format and easy-to-read narrative which provides great details and provides a good feel for the river.

The one criticism I have is the book fails to provide useful maps for use on the river.

There's more to clean clothes than soap and water, and Linda Cobb is willing to get down to the nitty-gritty in her simple, straightforward Talking Dirty Laundry with the Queen of Clean. No question is too small for the Queen--she tackles everything from stinky shoes to starched collars.

Each short chapter concerns a specific topic, starting with the care and cleaning of the washing and drying machines themselves. Who knew the washer needed regular cleaning? A short section on line drying is included here as well; never again will you ponder the proper way to hang hand-washed slacks. Most of the chapters are devoted to various types of special problems, such as colors that ran, stain and odor removal, and cleaning large items like bedspreads and lampshades. Explanations for when to dry-clean and how to make your own spot cleaners using household items like club soda, cream of tartar, and denture-cleaning tablets are also included, alongside ironing techniques and the definitive way of color sorting. Particularly helpful are the A-to-Z guides to fabric care and stain removal at the end of the book. Each type of fabric--from delicates like chiffon and velvet to rugged corduroy and denim--has a preferred treatment and certain chemicals that it just can't handle. Talking Dirty Laundry will give you optimal cleaning results--whether you got chocolate on your khakis or wine on your wool, you'll have the problem solved before you can say, "Shout it out!" --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars A Recommendation for Kelly Kline from Coplay, PA.......2002-08-29

Hi Kelly: You wrote that this book didn't have a solution for GRASS STAINS, so I thought of you when I saw Linda Cobb's other book called "A Queen for All Seasons: A Year of Tips, Tricks, and Picks for a Cleaner House and a More Organized Life!"

In this book it states the following: (Just ONE of the things in this book.)

Spring: Garden the natural way...allergy-proof your home...banish GRASS STAINS...color your Easter eggs....

SO....I thought you might like to get this book to help with some of those grass stains we all know kids are very good at getting ground into clothes. You didn't have your email address so I could write you......so I hope you see this recommendation.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2002-05-18

I found so much useful information in this book! I really enjoy it and use it often. I appreciate the fact that most of her cleaning solutions are non-toxic as I have a 2 year old at home.

I found that baking soda WILL unclog a drain (combined with a few other things) :) In fact baking soda by itself will clean quite a bit of your home.

                  3 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2002-04-07

This book offers helpful tidbits. One should always take precautions before doing a lot of this tips at home. Not everything is for everybody. If you have children with allergies or smaller children, you should take more precautions. The book is helpful, but some things in this book is basic common sense.

                  1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-11-16

I saw this book on Oprah. If she recommends it, it must be good, right? Wrong. The book doesn't deliver what it promises. Common stains are not always included. I assume that Oprah recommended it because (of course) she doesn't do her own laundry and would have no way of judging the quality of this kind of book for those of us who do not have hired help.

This book is priceless! I got sap on my car, so I found on the internet to clean it with alcohol, which helped with the sap, but it left a residue behind. After looking on the internet again to clean THAT, I remembered my book, which I bought years ago while still living at home. I flipped open the book and under the "Cleaning Products You Should Never Be Without", Ms. Cobb said to use a paste of baking soda and water. I did just that and sprayed white vinegar after I was done (my mom told me to use that). TA-DA!!! A clean windshield again!! All Hail The Queen Of Clean!!

                  Book Description

'The nature of colour should change - no longer just a thin layer of change, but something that genuinely alters perception' - this stipulation of Rem Koolhaas is echoed by the world famous architects and designers Alessandro Mendini and Norman Foster. In this volume, they present between them a total of 90 colours - each covering half a page - accompanied by comments on the background, the significance and the applications of the colours. Studies of colours from each office form the basis of this book, and were previously only available in extravagant individual editions. With this comprehensive and consistent presentation of the varying approaches to colour, we have a compendium which shows the wide use of colour in today's technologically advanced architecture with its modern, post-modern and deconstructive orientation. The range of examples of the colours in practice includes load-bearing structures, facades, interior design, furnishing and the entire spectrum of product design.

This book should be called 60 colors because the Koolhaas section is a total joke. He baiscly has 30 pages of ex-employee bios and then a color swatch of their favorite color. What a waste of paper. No explanation of how they used the color or why they choose the color. Norman Foster and Alessandro Mendini do a better job, each includes about a paragraph about how they used/chose the color in their respective 30 colors.

My suggestion, buy it used and only pay 2/3 of the asking price.
