Book Description
'The New Knowledge Management' is the story of the birth of "second-generation knowledge management," told from the perspective of one its chief architects, Mark W. McElroy. Unlike its first-generation cousin, second-generation Knowledge Management seeks to enhance knowledge production, not just knowledge sharing. As a result, 'The New Knowledge Management' expands the overall reach of knowledge management to include "innovation management" for the very first time.
'The New Knowledge Management' introduces the concept of "second-generation knowledge management" to the business community. Mark W. McElroy has assembled a collection of his own essays, written over the past four years, chronicling the development of related thinking in the field.
Unlike first-generation KM, mainly focusing on value derived from knowledge sharing, second-generation thinking formally adds knowledge making to the scope of KM. In this way second-generation KM expands the overall reach of KM to include "innovation management" for the very first time. 'The New Knowledge Management' finally begins to bridge the gap between KM and the field of organizational learning, which up until now have been viewed as miles apart.
* Charts the next generation of knowledge management thinking by the President of KMCI: the leading KM organization
* Expands the overall reach of knowledge management to include "innovation management" for the very first time
* Mark W. McElroy, chief architect of second-generation Knowledge Management, shares his vast experience in a collection of his own essays

a non-book.......2004-05-06
As the reviewer from mexico notes, most of the chapters of this book are reprints of previously published articles. This make the presentation disappointingly repetitive.
OK but still not practical enough.......2003-12-04
The author makes a great contribution creating the awareness that KM is much more that IT, and that it is about creating new knowledge and organizational learning. Although the idea is not new, he presents it through an interesting framework called the Knowledge Life Cycle. Thats great.
On the other hand, since the book is a compilation of previous papers from the author, I feel that he repeats the same ideas over and over again. I couldn't find explicit evidence of the aplication of these ideas on the day to day work. I also see a contradiction in the sense that he says that the new KM is more about creating new knowledge, but it seems to me that he is trying to create new knowledge through the re-frasing and re-naming of other author's ideas. Please...don't throw more "fancy words" to the KM arena, it is already full !
The "next generation" of Knowledge Management is here!.......2003-02-13
In this wonderful little book, Mark McElroy begins to do for Knowledge Management what Peter Senge did for Organizational Learning: He connects deep theory with cogent practice, bringing the entire discipline to a new level. The book is a carefully designed compendium of Mark's leading-edge thinking over the past several years. In it he lays out the foundations for the next generation - "demand-side" - Knowledge Management, which enhances individuals capacity to produce knowledge, rather than simply use what's already there. By integrating a unique approach to complexity science with insights from organizational learning, he develops a model of "sustainable innovation" which is based on a broader theoretical framework of Social Innovation Capital (SIC). His SIC framework generates a core insight - the Policy Synchronization Method - a theory-based yet practical method for creating the conditions that support innovation in the long term. His writing is as useful as his modeling, for he constantly grounds his thinking into concrete and highly applicable suggestions that can be utilized in a wide range of contexts. Near the end of the book he shows the economic returns on investment from his second-generation KM, and concludes with a "presentation" that can be used to help make the case for these ideas in formal and informal settings. As a professor of entrepreneurship and management at a business school, and a 20-year student of complexity science, I am a true fan of Mark McElroy, and I am excited by this book and the ones soon to follow.
Comments of book "The New Knowledge Management".......2003-01-09
The book "The New Knowledge Management" addresses some very intriguing concepts and provides some innovative thinking in the knowledge management area. It shows how the fundamental concepts of organization learning, innovation, social innovation capital, and complex adaptive systems are related to knowledge management. The author introduces the reader to the idea of "second -generation knowledge management" which is used as a framework to relate the above concepts to knowledge management. "Second-generation knowledge management is more inclusive of people, process, and social initiatives than "first-generation knowledge management". The book provides some unique insights and organizations approaches to sustain innovation. These insights are the first of its kind and have far reaching implications to how we should manage organizations. The book is very thought provoking and a must read for people interested in theory and practical implications. I am currently using it as one of my text in teaching a graduate course in knowledge management.

Customer Reviews:
Great.......2003-02-27
I don't generally leave reviews but this book is so great that I had to say something. Clear pictures and small detailed pictures and tons of clean throws. Exactly what I wanted. It makes me want to check out his other books.
Well Done, Carefully Constructed Book on Throwing Techniques.......2003-02-16
If you already have Mark Tedeschi's Huge 1136-page Hapkido book, you're probably wondering what makes this volume on throwing techniques any different. The main difference is this: The big Hapkido book ~does~ include every technique shown here. However the detail in this volume is much more exact--the big Hapkido book was so inclusive that the author was limited to showing 2-3 photos to illustrate a hold or throw. This volume on Throws uses an average of 5-9 photographs per technique, including close-ups. The descriptive narrative is also more specific in this volume. So if you would like a volume which is incredibly specific on the subject of throwing techniques, this book is the thing! If you already have the big book, and don't really need the extra detail, then this volume will probably be redundant.
Tedeschi has grouped the techniqes into six major categories: shoulder Throws (12 techniques), hip throws (14 techniques), Leg throws (12 techniques), Hand Throws (26 techniques), Sacrefice Throws (10 techniques)Kick-counter throws (16). Also a set of 20 combinations (throw to lock), and a vital section on Defenses against throws (24 defenses shown). You might also be wondering whether the techniques shown in this book are too specific to Hapkido to be of any use to you if you practice say, judo or another martial art. The nice thing about Tedeschi's books is that he has studied a variety of grappling arts--and come to the same realization the rest of us have over the years. An inside shoulder throw is still an inside shoulder throw--whether you call it that in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, or English. Tedeschi's 4-volume series makes no distinction as to language or culture--every technique in this book is referred to by it's English name.
I should add that I am pleased with the quality of the volumes put out by the publisher, Weatherhill. Clear photographs are printed on slick acid-resistant paper, and the boards of these volumes are covered with a laminated paper that will resist picking up sweat (or any other of those wonderful things we get on our books while taking them on the mat or discussing techniques after practice). Tedeschi has gone the extra mile in making ALL of his books as specific as possible. Most of the techniques shown include extra photographs and diagrams of bones, muscles, and pressure points as they apply to the specific technique. This is the first technical martial arts book by any author where I've seen this sort of exacting detail on virtually every technique. And to think, he doesn't call himself Grandmaster or wear anything but a plain black belt.
Another excellent text.......2002-03-05
Bought this along with "Art of Holding" by same author (see my review for more info). Both are very well done and are excellent books with lots of insight. Looking forward to his other books.
A Quality Text.......2002-01-14
In addition to The Art of Throwing, I have bought other books by Mr. Tedeschi: The Art of Holding, The Art of Striking and The Art of Ground Fighting. In my opinion, all of these texts are excellent. The layout of the books are logical and the plethora of photographs are clear. The author's specialty is the eclectic Korean martial art of Hapkido. One of the first things the author does in the overview of his book is show the similarities of techniques between the different arts. For example, in The Art of Throwing the author takes clips from other books to demonstrate how a Hapkido hip throw is executed compared to one in Judo, Jiu-jitsu, Aikido, Chinese Wrestling, Kuk Sool Won and Hwa Ran Do. Of course, the conclusion is that while there are many subtle differences, physics is physics, leverage is leverage etc. The human body only acts and moves in certain ways; therefore, it is no surprise that the founders of the different styles came to similar conclusions about throwing.
As one would suspect, the book also covers breakfalls, footwork, stances, grips (including pressure point targets for gripping) and the throws themselves, broken down into the sub-categories of: shoulder throws, hip throws, hand throws, sacrifice throws, kick-counter throws combinations of throws and defence against throws. In all, over eighty throws are demonstrated. When you have this number of techniques, there is a bit of, "Well, that would difficult to execute" or "Why not do such and such - it's less complicated" but these are minor points. The fact of matter is that the vast majority of techniques appear quite practical. As a Judo practitioner and policeman I have successfully used many similar moves myself in competition and on the job. For all of you Judoka out there: if you want to learn to make your throws more street-lethal (e.g. in a justifiable self-defence situation), you'll be very interested in the Hapkido method of throwing as many techniques incorporate a strike or lock in their execution (much like jui-jitsu).Is the book worth the money? Unequivocally, yes. To use a cliché, I believe this book has a place of every martial artist's bookshelf. With so much garbage out there on the market, it is refreshing to see a book of this quality being produced. Mr. Tedeschi is on a roll, I hope he continues to write.
Book Description

Three all-new chapters provide state-of-the-science coverage of fluency, vocabulary, and writing.
Customer Reviews:
Definite Must-Read.......2006-06-22
Pressley's stated goal is to provide a "reader-friendly review of the research evidence pertaining to beginning reading, one that doesn't require [readers] to have technical background knowledge in reading research." In this he succeeds admirably. While the text is chock-full of references to studies and analyses, it is by no means a dry, dense tome. It is most definitely reader- and teacher-friendly.
As denoted in the subtitle, Pressley argues for balanced instruction. "Whole-language theorists," he writes, "had it about half-right with respect to the development of reading skills. Yes, authentic reading and writing are important in the development of literacy, but systematic instruction in skills is also very important." Both whole language and skills only instruction are incomplete models, notes Pressley. What is needed is a balance of the two.
Throughout the book and in numerous ways, Pressley makes several points that any teacher (no matter what his or her grade level or subject area) should keep in mind:
-reading is an extremely active process
-the point of reading is not to simply read the words but rather to construct meaning
-students can and should be taught comprehension strategies beginning even in the primary years
-effective reading instruction includes skills instruction, immersion in a rich literacy environment, and the explicit teaching of comprehension strategies
Readers will find a gold mine of information throughout the text. Especially helpful, for example, is an overview and discussion of an analysis that he and Peter Afflerbach did in 1995. The two reviewed studies published up to that point and constructed a summary of what good readers do. In short, good readers:
-overview the text
-are "clear about what they want to get from it"
-make a reading plan
-decide which parts of the text should be read first; which parts should be read with care
-relate their prior knowledge to what they are reading
-vary their speed
-stop to reread when necessary
-draw conclusions while reading (conclusions which might eventually change as they read further)
-"integrate ideas encountered in different parts of the text"
-look for cause and effect connections
-make many interpretations as they read
-form mental images
-use fix-up strategies when understanding breaks down
-create summary comments
-reflect on the text
Unlike some books of this type, Reading Instruction That Works is not simply an overview of current reading research. Rather, Pressley includes much discussion of what the research means to the individual classroom teacher. There are, for example, two especially helpful (and inspiring) sections on outstanding teachers. Pressley takes the reader into real classrooms and offers a fly-on-the-wall perspective of what is happening in both exceptional as well as typical classrooms. It is certainly an eye-opening, and ultimately encouraging, discussion.
One particularly cogent chapter of the book is titled "Before Reading Words Begins." If you have ever wondered what phonemic awareness is and how to develop it in your students, you will come away from this chapter informed and motivated. Here Pressley notes, "Many kindergarten and grade-1 children lack the awareness that words are streams of sounds that can be disentangled and that sounds can be assembled to produce words." In other words, they lack phonemic awareness. "Fortunately," writes Pressley, "phonemic awareness can be developed through instruction, with clear benefits to subsequent acquisition of reading skills."
One section that teachers of disadvantaged, at-risk children will identify with is a discussion concerning weak readers' failures to make inferences. Pressley notes, " . . . inferential skills depend in part on the possession of prior knowledge related to text. Poor readers are often very deficient in their knowledge of the world relative to good readers." One reason--although certainly not the only reason--poor readers are deficient in their knowledge of the world is because they are poor readers. They do not learn as much content from reading as their peers who are better readers. It is an unfortunate cycle. Comprehension depends of prior knowledge. Poor readers are not absorbing that knowledge from texts because they are poor readers. Thus, as Pressley notes, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
One point that our study group found especially fascinating is "rather than trying to sound out an unfamiliar word, poorer readers rely on textual and picture cues and clues to make a guess about a word's meaning . . . Although such students might process the letters somewhat and use some letter-level information in making their guess, their processing of the letter cues is much less complete than it could be, with the picture and semantic-contextual cues given priority." This, we agreed, was something that we had witnessed over and over in our classrooms. So, while semantic-contextual cues are helpful for determining the meaning of the word, "[l]etter-level cues," notes Pressley, "are the primary means of recognizing words."
It is impossible to do justice to this wonderful work in a brief review such as this. We strongly encourage you to get the book for yourself and spend some time reading and reflecting upon it. Highly recommended. A rock-solid, impressive work.

Book Description
The man behind Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, and a legion of other superheroes tells his own amazing story in a book packed with punch, humor, anecdotes, and a gallery of never-before-seen photographs.
Stan Lee is the most legendary name in the history of comicbooks. The leading creative force behind the rise of Marvel Comics, he brought to life some of the world's best-known heroes and most infamous villains. His stories, featuring super- heroes who struggled against personal hang-ups and bad guys who possessed previously unseen psychological complexity, added wit and subtlety to a field previously locked into flat portrayals of good vs. evil. Lee put the human in the super-human. In the process, he created a new mythology for the twentieth century.
In this treasure trove of marvelous memories, Stan tells the story of his life with the same inimitable wit, energy, and offbeat spirit that he brought to the world of comicbooks. He moves from his impoverished childhood in Manhattan to his early days writing comicbooks, followed by military training films during World War II, through the rise of the Marvel empire in the 1960s to his recent adventures in Hollywood.
The story of a man who earned respect by blazing new creative trails in a storytelling form once dismissed as just for kids, Excelsior! is an inspirational story about following one's vision, no matter the odds. Yet it's also the story of how some of the most exciting and memorable characters in the pop-culture universe came to thrill a generation.

Stan LEE.......2007-09-10
My son is a Stan Lee Fan and is grown. He loves the book it is very informative.
STAN IS THE MAN - 'NUFF SAID!.......2006-05-14
The bio-autography (as it's called) on Stan Lee is one of the quickest reads I've torn through in along time. First off, if you're not a comic book fan then there's no reason to look into the book as Lee's life is a tame one free from most scandals. He grew up, spent time in the military, got married, had a daughter, and helped build Marvel Comics into the empire it is today (as well as creating some of the greatest hero characters of all time). Frankly it's the kind of life I'm sure most people would like to have.
That said, it may not be the kind of life that most people would want to read about. However if you are a Marvel fan and want to learn about the trials and tribulations of the creation of Spider-Man, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, et. all then this book is for you. Stan Lee (with George Mair) writes the book in his electrifiyng eloquence extrodinaire that made his Old Stan's Soapbox so fun to read. I found myself smiling quite often at the unique perspective and choice of words that Stan placed on the paper.
I recommend the book and if you're ordering it on Amazon then do yourself a favor and attach one of the Marvel Essentials that reprint some of Stan Lee's finest writing, they're the most cost friendly comic read on the market).
On Excelsior.......2005-10-03
For my first independent reading project I read Stan Lee's autobiography,
Excelsior. Actually, it is a bio-autobiography, because it was written by Stan Lee and a man named George Mair. Since it was written by two people, we get much more information, and can understand Stan's life even better. That's why I think this autobiography has been the most enjoyable of any that I have read.
With Stan's words printed, and George's words in italics, they slowly wrote about Stan's life from when he was born to what he is doing now. While Stan wrote about his early childhood dreams and fascinations with movies and fantasy, George puts in important facts about what events are going on in the world during the time Stan is writing about. George also tells us about important points in Stan's life that Stan forgot to write down, while Stan write marvelous (no pun intended) descriptions of his feelings, thoughts, and actions throughout his long career, Stan even mentions, since he can't even remember on most days what he had for breakfast, that there will probably be another, more complete, edition of his bio-autobiography coming out at a later time. If you want to learn more about the intriguing life of Stan Lee, or even about Marvel Comics itself, you should pick up Excelsior, The Amazing Life of Stan Lee.
Great Book!.......2004-03-26
Excelsior! The Amazing Life of Stan Lee
Stan Lee and George Mair
C. Cho
P. 5
This book is an autobiography of Stan Lee. Many people don't actually know who this man is. Stan Lee is the man who created and wrote comic book characters such as Spider-man, Daredevil, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and many other charcters. Stan was also the author of these comic book characters and the editor. Stan tells us about what kind of hardships he went through and even about his personal life.
I enjoyed reading this book because I always wondered how comic book creaters were able to create characters that were very descriptive. Stan even wrote a whole entire chapter on my favorite charcter, Spider-Man. In this chapter it tells about how Stan lee made Spider-Man. Stan says that he got the idea of Spider-Man by looking at a fly on the wall while he was typing. After he had seen the fly, he rushed to his artist, Steve Ditko and asked him to draw a man that had the characteristics of a spider and Spider-Man turned out to be a hit. Comic books back then cost around twelve cents, here is a quote that will amaze you. "Today, incidentally, copies of Amazing Fantasy #15 sell for up to $20,000 in the collectors' market, if anyone is lucky enough to find one."
Some parts that I did not like was that it told a lot about his personal life. When I first started reading this book, I thought his personal life was interesting, but after a while, it started to get repetitive. This book also informs me about what he published and how he did it. I think Stan should've not told us about his publishers so much. After reading about so many publishers, I had to skip some parts because I didn't want to read about it.
My favorite part of the book is when Stan talks about his creation of comic book characters and how he created them. It was interesting when he told me some of his stories such as being chased by a policeman that was on a horse. Stan tells stories very descriptive so I enjoyed reading this book very much. Stan writes his comic books so great that I have been influenced to read more about this great character. This book has taught me many great things about Stan Lee's life. I think this will be an enjoyable book for young adults and even adults!
Comic Book Man.......2003-11-25
I've always been a fan of comic books. These pulp collections of modern mythology helped me through a sometimes extraordinarily mundane childhood with my sanity intact. In fact, my closet has several large boxes filled with several thousand of them. Even at 32 year of age, I refuse to give them up.
Stan Lee is Marvel Comics. From the Second World War to today, he has given us a slate of unparalled heroes to adorn with wonder. He saw Marvel grow from a little pubisher called Timely in the 40s, survive attacks from parent groups in the 50s, the rebirth of the superhero in the 60s, and the emergence of a unique artform in 80s, 90s and today.
The book is so-so. Stan Lee has led an interesting life, to be certain, but there are no sex scandals, drug addiction, alcoholism, embezzlement or any of those other things that tend to make biographies best sellers today. In some ways, he is a goody-goody and he writes the book like one of his comic stories without the juicy material it needs to make it truly thrilling.
I don't want to turn anyone off, but if you are looking for things like Joan Collins rape at age 17 or Elizabeth Taylor's multiple stormy marriages, this isn't for you. Rather this provides a unique and invaluable historical record of the a part of history that is ignored by traditional outlets. Comic books are firmly entrenched in history, but are just starting to be realized as a legitimate art and literary form. Marvel has a colorful history, staring out as a private publishing company, being sold from company to company, going public after being taken over by buyout king Ron Perelmen in 1989. Financial mismanagement nearly destroyed the company in the mid-90s and it is just starting to recover. This is where the biography's true value lies.
Stan Lee always felt that Marvel had the potential to become the next Disney. With the success of Spider-Man in the movies, which has broken $800 million worldwide, as of this writing, that prediction may yet come true.
