                    Book Description

                    Reared on her father's 13,000-acre spread, Ann Daum is now a rancher herself, raising sport horses and hoping to sustain a relationship to place in which self-reliance is not intertwined with cruelty, and closeness to the land does not imply hatred of the wild. Daum's essays rise and fall with the undulations of the prairie and can be as forceful as the South Dakota weather. Her warm memories of being a little girl on the ranch and listening to her father tell stories contrast sharply with her recollections of the captive coyote she set free one night and the ranch hand whose casual brutality extended from the killing of wild creatures to sexual predation. Daum writes not only about the artifacts buried in the prairie soil but also about what lies hidden in the lives of the prairie's residents.

                    5 out of 5 stars Proud to be a Dakotan.......2002-09-08

                    From her descriptions of the wind, to the grasses, to the hardships, Ann Daum captured South Dakota's reality on paper. Every chapter lends truths to the prairie and our lives here. Thanks, Ann.

                    5 out of 5 stars Praise for Prairie in Her Eyes.......2001-08-07

                    Minneapolis Star-Tribune Regional Round-up, June 24, 2001: "Daum's writing is lyrical, haunted by mortality, and so detailed you can almost feel the dust and heat. With great feeling, she captures a place where 'loneliness is just another disease.'"

                    Forward Magazine, July Issue: "This land, the prairie is not just in her eyes-it's in her soul in this slender but weighty first book."

                    5 out of 5 stars The Genuine Article.......2001-05-17

                    Every now and then, an authentic voice sings a song about life, the world we live in, and the human condition. In Ann Daum's book "Prairie in Her Eyes," we hear all this, plus a symphony about the animal condition as well. I grew up in New York City. When I read Ann Daum's work, I am transported to a different world, made up of enormous skies, animal bodies and breath, and the rhythm of the seasons in big sky country. I am close to her and her world. I cry about a fox I never met. I breathe deeply about the fate of cows, prairie dogs and horses. Life takes on a new perspective and a depth that flows from the earth, the weather, the ranch, and Ann's generous and sensitive heart. Fine writing should reach out to whatever is univeral, but also speak to one human being's particular experience. "The Prairie In Her Eyes" has achieved this essential interweave, and I recommend it to anyone with heart or soul or mind.

                    5 out of 5 stars SOUL-FULL.......2001-05-17

                    If you want to taste earth and the vast, wind-carried longings,this book will be a soulful treat, page after page. Ann weaves image and story together with our almost forgotten human need for something more primal, more true, than our bleak and urban skies.

                    4 out of 5 stars For cyclists old and new.......2007-09-18

                    I've been a avid cyclist for nearly three decades and am always looking for some new insights in order to be a more efficient and stronger cyclist. This handbook comes from the publishers of Bicycling [1-year]which also has relevent information for cyclists. Recently I've included some new training methods and cross training into my normal cycling routine and I found this book beneficial. You can pick and choose your information as the concise format lends itself to browsing the book. It is a small book that you can take most anywhere and pull out to get some information. The tips are very often redundant and common sense ,especially if you have been cycling for a very long time. However there is always something new to learn or just something you may have overlooked even if you are veteran cyclist. An example is just your basic riding postion. The book suggests that on even on your easy ride days you can improve your riding technique by taking note of certain things. For example, I tend to ride with my elbows out(doesn't seem like a big deal but it is)so I now pay attention to this riding quirk and constantly correct my technique. Eventually a better riding technique will be second nature and I won't need to compensate. I picked up some good advice for the gym regarding working on certain cycling specific muscles, the role of the calves and the heart and soul of your stroke, the quads. The suggested excercises for the quads has helped especially since one(step up)some can be done at home from a bench or an elevated firm place.The power and force training sections were concise but filled with useful information. No matter what level of cyclist you are you will be able to benefit from this handbook for improving you riding skills. If you are new to cycling than I would highly recommend this book for a basic handbook for nearly all facets of cycling.

                    4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-01-21

                    I really enjoyed this book and found it very helpful for improving my technique. It's a fast read and deserves to be read a couple of times. The author/editor points out that there are several conflicting opinions given, but like anything in life you need to find the one that works best for you. It's good to see that the editor didn't think he had to just give the most popular opinion. I highly recommend this book for riders looking to step up their training.

                    3 out of 5 stars A good start.......2006-01-08

                    This book is a good starting point for training for cycling. It gives the reader an overview of training and the different approaches there are to training. It drives home the point that each individual is different and that you need to customize a training programt to fit your own needs and abilities. Again, though, I felt it was a good starting point. Giving you a taste of what's out there, introducing you to terms, and what you should be thinking about as you design your own training plan.

                    As you become more serious about training for cycling, I recommend picking up A Cyclist's Training Bible by Joe Friel.

                    4 out of 5 stars Quite good, but buy it's bigger brother instead........2004-06-03

                    It's been a while since I last flicked through this book, which tells you something about it. It's a good book, no doubt about it, but I bought it at the same time as another book "The Complete Book of Long-Distance Cycling" (see my review on that one too!). That book overshadows this one, as it goes into more detail and THAT is the one I find myself re-reading. First and foremost as one of the authors is the same, a lot of the stuff is doubled up.

                    Note that this book is only 110 pages long and the pages are fairly small. Once again, every page or so, bits of the book are worthy of being highlighted.

                    If you read bicycling magazine often (which I don't) you probably already know a lot of the content. If you've been cycling for several years (10 for me), I think a lot of the tips can be described as common sense, such as keeping your cadence around 90rpm, consuming carbohydrates and staying hydrated...

                    But I get the feeling that it tries to cover too much ground. This is more of a book that uses point form. It does get to the crux of the matter quickly, but I prefer to understand /why/ a method works, not just be told that it works, so go do it. Be aware that not all of the techniques discussed here will suit your style of riding. I mean I'm never going to practise sprints. I'm wondering now if I did all they suggested on a ride, I wouldn't enjoy it anymore. Practise you're breathing, cycle for two minutes with alternate legs, concentrate on achieving a flat back posture, pull back then up on the pedals... too much to think about at any one time.

                    Don't expect to find many weekly training plans in here. For me that was good news, as I've never followed one. I think it all depends on how you're feeling (not to mention the weather and other things that crop up).

                    One annoying thing, the rest of the world uses metric units: some people, like me, have absolutely no idea how much a fluid ounce is. For the rest of the planet, 1oz = 28ml of water.

                    Bottom line: I'd say get this book if you've fairly new to cycling and keen to learn ways of improving - take what you want from it and don't worry about the rest.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Training Guide.......2000-03-21

                    A great book for cyclists who do not have access to million dollar training facilities. The author takes a no nonsense approach to training that anybody can follow providing they have a bike a stationary trainer and a desire. I found this book very useful. The best part was the author included a section on mountain biking. Thanks!

                            Book Description

                            The stellar list of contributors to this book includes Nobel Prize winner and Columbia University Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Irrational Exuberance author Robert Shiller, and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The theme on which they are all passionate is the importance of a free and independent press.

                            As World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn points out in the foreword to this book, "a free press is not a luxury. It is at the core of equitable development." Contributors to this volume explore the role of the media as a watchdog of government and the corporate sector, the media's power to influence markets, its usefulness as a transmitter of new ideas and information, and its ability to give a voice to the poor and disenfranchised. They also tackle the potential harm an unethical, propagandistic, or irresponsible press can cause and the impact of insult laws and other policies that hamper the operation of a free press.

                            Several contributors describe the challenges faced by the media in specific countries, including the former Soviet Union, Thailand, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Zimbabwe—these are fascinating case studies and vivid illustrations of the media's potential as a catalyst for change and growth.

                            Advance Praise for The Right to Tell: "I've been waiting for ten years for someone to put together a book like this. The Right To Tell finally makes the case linking open media with economic growth and development. Each article in this collection is like a building block in a public policy brief that places open media at the forefront of development strategy. It follows Amartya Sen's groundbreaking Development As Freedom with compelling arguments that independent media are essential to social development and economic growth. Open media translates into transparency and government accountability, less corruption, participatory democracy, civil society and, yes, greater income. This book is a must read for policymakers who are only now waking up to the immense power of open media."--David Hoffman, President, Internews Network

                            Download Description

                            A free press is not a luxury. It is at the core of equitable development. The media can expose corruption. They can keep a check on public policy by throwing a spotlight on government action. They let people voice diverse opinions on governance and reform, and help build public consensus to bring about change. Such media help markets work better. They can facilitate trade, transmitting ideas and innovation across boundaries. The media are also important for human development, bringing health and education information to remote villages in countries from Uganda to Nicaragua. But as experience has shown, the independence of the media can be fragile and easily compromised. It is clear that to support development, media need the right environment-in terms of freedoms, capacities, and checks and balances. The World Development Report 2002, "Building Institutions for Markets (rep. no. 22825)," devoted a chapter to the role of the media in development. This volume is an extension of that work. It discusses how media affects development outcomes under different circumstances and presents evidence on what policy environment is needed to enable the media to support economic and political markets and to provide a voice for the disenfranchised. To this end, it draws together the views of academics as well as perspectives from those on the front line-journalists themselves.

                              Book Description

                              "The Crisis Manual for Emerging Countries" deals with the reasons why Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Russia and Brazil all suffered economic and financial crises dramatically shortly after deciding to participate more intensively in the global marketplace. Why? Did they open their borders too soon? Can we blame the information Age? Globalization? In this book, Professor Rolf Mario Treuherz, Ph.D., a visiting scholar at Stanford University presents:

                              1. a detailed and critical analysis of these countries' economic crises;

                              2. pros and cons of globalization and liberalization and their effects upon sovereignty, income distribution, unemployment and human rights;

                              3. extensive explanations about exchange regimes;

                              4. the framework, role and responsibilities of worldwide organizations and regional trade organizations;

                              5. warning signs and preventive measures. It is important reading for graduate and undergraduate students and professors in International Economics and Finance, Asian and Latin American Studies, Political Science, Economic History and Policy. It is also of special interest to investment banks, stock exchange brokers, international financial consultants and transnational companies with assets in emerging countries.

                              Customer Reviews:

                              5 out of 5 stars Very good history and analysis of the 1994-1999 crises.......2003-03-18

                              I view this book as two separate endeavours. First, as economic history, and second as economic and political analysis.

                              In the portion about economic history, Treuherz does a very good job of pointing out the relevant factors that drove each of the crises he talks about. I found it especially useful since, though there is much information on all the 1990s crises, it is not put together in a coherent and orderly manner. As a history of latest emerging markets crises, this book is the best I have seen. There are other good ones about the 1980s debt crises, but this is the best for the 1990s.

                              As for the economics analysis part of the book, it is filled with comparative information, which I found very useful in helping build a framework that identifies the precursors of crises. He discusses many economic ideas, such as free trade and the benefits of globalization, providing empirical information to back his conclusions. This was quite unique, as much of the economic literature is conceptual rather than empirical.

                              Overall, this is an outstanding work. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in economic history, crisis management, or just wanting to better understand what happened in the last decade.

                              5 out of 5 stars My review of "The Crisis Manual for Emerging Countries".......2000-05-10

                              I got a great deal out of this book. No one else encapsulates financial crises in the way that Rolf Treuherz does, and I don't know where else so many crises are covered. Treuherz combines conciseness with detail in a way that reflects great judgment. It is interesting to see, from the author's perspective, how many ways there are to drive an economy right off a cliff. This book is really a compendium of other people's nightmares, but they are nightmares that any student of financial crashes and policy foul-ups had better know about.

                              5 out of 5 stars Don't travel abroad before reding this book !.......2000-03-14

                              The author has prepared a most valuable guide for our taking position towards facts that otherwise we might find out too late when arriving at an Emerging Country. It permits the reader to avoid pitfalls, to save time and money upon arrival. Cientists will go into the right direction, economists will seek the right contacts. The common traveler will find options for his preffered activity. Congratulations Dr.Treuherz for the valuable time, profound study and experience writing this book must have cost you. It was well worth it ! Respectfully Klaus Wolfgang Brazil

                              5 out of 5 stars Why were emerging countries affected by financial crises?.......2000-03-13

                              Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Russia and Brazil, all went through economic and financial crises shortly after deciding to participate more intensely in the global marketplace. Why were their economies so dramatically affected between 1994 and 1999? Can we blame the Information Age? Globalization? In this book I analyse these countries' current and past economic issues, the pros and cons of globalization and liberalization, and their effect upon sovereignty, income distribution, unemployment and human rights. An explanation of the different types of exchange regimes is then given, followed by a brief discussion of such topics as monetary and fiscal policy. The importance of regional associations and worldwide organizations is also highlighted. Finally, in line with what readers expect of a manual, a series of warning signs and preventive measures are suggested, aimed at assisting emerging countries in their efforts to avoid similar dilemmas or prevent undesirable recurrences. This book constitutes important reading material for graduate and undergraduate students and professors in International Economics and Finance, Asian and Latin American Studies, Political Science, Economic History and Policy. It is of special interest to investment banks, stock exchange brokers, international business consultants and transnational companies with assets in emerging countries.
