The Prairie in Her Eyes: The Breaking and Making of a Dakota Rancher
Ann Daum Manufacturer: Milkweed Editions ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1571312552 |
Book Description
Reared on her father's 13,000-acre spread, Ann Daum is now a rancher herself, raising sport horses and hoping to sustain a relationship to place in which self-reliance is not intertwined with cruelty, and closeness to the land does not imply hatred of the wild. Daum's essays rise and fall with the undulations of the prairie and can be as forceful as the South Dakota weather. Her warm memories of being a little girl on the ranch and listening to her father tell stories contrast sharply with her recollections of the captive coyote she set free one night and the ranch hand whose casual brutality extended from the killing of wild creatures to sexual predation. Daum writes not only about the artifacts buried in the prairie soil but also about what lies hidden in the lives of the prairie's residents.Customer Reviews:

Excellent book.......2006-01-21
A good start.......2006-01-08
Quite good, but buy it's bigger brother instead........2004-06-03
Note that this book is only 110 pages long and the pages are fairly small. Once again, every page or so, bits of the book are worthy of being highlighted.
If you read bicycling magazine often (which I don't) you probably already know a lot of the content. If you've been cycling for several years (10 for me), I think a lot of the tips can be described as common sense, such as keeping your cadence around 90rpm, consuming carbohydrates and staying hydrated...
But I get the feeling that it tries to cover too much ground. This is more of a book that uses point form. It does get to the crux of the matter quickly, but I prefer to understand /why/ a method works, not just be told that it works, so go do it. Be aware that not all of the techniques discussed here will suit your style of riding. I mean I'm never going to practise sprints. I'm wondering now if I did all they suggested on a ride, I wouldn't enjoy it anymore. Practise you're breathing, cycle for two minutes with alternate legs, concentrate on achieving a flat back posture, pull back then up on the pedals... too much to think about at any one time.
Don't expect to find many weekly training plans in here. For me that was good news, as I've never followed one. I think it all depends on how you're feeling (not to mention the weather and other things that crop up).
One annoying thing, the rest of the world uses metric units: some people, like me, have absolutely no idea how much a fluid ounce is. For the rest of the planet, 1oz = 28ml of water.
Bottom line: I'd say get this book if you've fairly new to cycling and keen to learn ways of improving - take what you want from it and don't worry about the rest.
Great Training Guide.......2000-03-21

The Right to Tell: The Role of Mass Media in Economic Development (Wbi Development Studies)
Roumeen Islam Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821352032 |
Book Description
The stellar list of contributors to this book includes Nobel Prize winner and Columbia University Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Irrational Exuberance author Robert Shiller, and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The theme on which they are all passionate is the importance of a free and independent press.As World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn points out in the foreword to this book, "a free press is not a luxury. It is at the core of equitable development." Contributors to this volume explore the role of the media as a watchdog of government and the corporate sector, the media's power to influence markets, its usefulness as a transmitter of new ideas and information, and its ability to give a voice to the poor and disenfranchised. They also tackle the potential harm an unethical, propagandistic, or irresponsible press can cause and the impact of insult laws and other policies that hamper the operation of a free press.
Several contributors describe the challenges faced by the media in specific countries, including the former Soviet Union, Thailand, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Zimbabwethese are fascinating case studies and vivid illustrations of the media's potential as a catalyst for change and growth.
Advance Praise for The Right to Tell: "I've been waiting for ten years for someone to put together a book like this. The Right To Tell finally makes the case linking open media with economic growth and development. Each article in this collection is like a building block in a public policy brief that places open media at the forefront of development strategy. It follows Amartya Sen's groundbreaking Development As Freedom with compelling arguments that independent media are essential to social development and economic growth. Open media translates into transparency and government accountability, less corruption, participatory democracy, civil society and, yes, greater income. This book is a must read for policymakers who are only now waking up to the immense power of open media."--David Hoffman, President, Internews Network
Download Description
A free press is not a luxury. It is at the core of equitable development. The media can expose corruption. They can keep a check on public policy by throwing a spotlight on government action. They let people voice diverse opinions on governance and reform, and help build public consensus to bring about change. Such media help markets work better. They can facilitate trade, transmitting ideas and innovation across boundaries. The media are also important for human development, bringing health and education information to remote villages in countries from Uganda to Nicaragua. But as experience has shown, the independence of the media can be fragile and easily compromised. It is clear that to support development, media need the right environment-in terms of freedoms, capacities, and checks and balances. The World Development Report 2002, "Building Institutions for Markets (rep. no. 22825)," devoted a chapter to the role of the media in development. This volume is an extension of that work. It discusses how media affects development outcomes under different circumstances and presents evidence on what policy environment is needed to enable the media to support economic and political markets and to provide a voice for the disenfranchised. To this end, it draws together the views of academics as well as perspectives from those on the front line-journalists themselves.

The Crisis Manual for Emerging Countries
Rolf Mario, Ph.D. Treuherz Manufacturer: Fabrizio Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0967876508 |
Book Description
"The Crisis Manual for Emerging Countries" deals with the reasons why Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Russia and Brazil all suffered economic and financial crises dramatically shortly after deciding to participate more intensively in the global marketplace. Why? Did they open their borders too soon? Can we blame the information Age? Globalization? In this book, Professor Rolf Mario Treuherz, Ph.D., a visiting scholar at Stanford University presents:1. a detailed and critical analysis of these countries' economic crises;
2. pros and cons of globalization and liberalization and their effects upon sovereignty, income distribution, unemployment and human rights;
3. extensive explanations about exchange regimes;
4. the framework, role and responsibilities of worldwide organizations and regional trade organizations;
5. warning signs and preventive measures. It is important reading for graduate and undergraduate students and professors in International Economics and Finance, Asian and Latin American Studies, Political Science, Economic History and Policy. It is also of special interest to investment banks, stock exchange brokers, international financial consultants and transnational companies with assets in emerging countries.
Customer Reviews:
Very good history and analysis of the 1994-1999 crises.......2003-03-18
In the portion about economic history, Treuherz does a very good job of pointing out the relevant factors that drove each of the crises he talks about. I found it especially useful since, though there is much information on all the 1990s crises, it is not put together in a coherent and orderly manner. As a history of latest emerging markets crises, this book is the best I have seen. There are other good ones about the 1980s debt crises, but this is the best for the 1990s.
As for the economics analysis part of the book, it is filled with comparative information, which I found very useful in helping build a framework that identifies the precursors of crises. He discusses many economic ideas, such as free trade and the benefits of globalization, providing empirical information to back his conclusions. This was quite unique, as much of the economic literature is conceptual rather than empirical.
Overall, this is an outstanding work. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in economic history, crisis management, or just wanting to better understand what happened in the last decade.
