This book describes the application and growth, in U.S. corporations, of multi-source employee assessment. This is a review of the strengths and weaknesses of the ¡°360¢ª Feedback¡± program created by the authors, Mark R. Edwards and Ann J. Ewen. Their book gives you enough information to evaluate multi-source employee assessments. However, if you are reading it because you expect to be able to implement a 360¢ª feedback process without hiring the authors, you will be disappointed. It seems to be written from the consultant's perspective, which is selling consulting services. This limitation should not discourage you from reading this book, if you have a genuine interest in implementing multi-source employee assessment or if it is something your company may need. While the book is not for the causal reader, it is important for anyone in a Fortune 1000 company who functions as a change agent. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to any manager who might be interested in implementing such an employee review process.

Although this book has many papers that weigh in on current debates, some papers are simply rewrites of older material. There is very little "road-mapping"-- the editors seem to assume some familiarity with the field already. Plus many of the authors seem to talk past each other.

Overall, though, there are some really excellent ideas and great insights. Pick up an intro anthology first, then dive in to this one.

3 out of 5 stars Neat idea, wrong approach........2006-03-14

I picked up this book for a paper I was doing. I read it cover to cover, but I found that many of the essays were selective in the material it used for the papers included. (This is a collection of essays by the author, with one or two done with his daughter.)

It takes a heavy Freudian approach, such that many of the references may seem sexual in nature. I don't agree with his analysis of many of the folklore stories, nor the format that he put it in.

For example, in the Bloody Mary essay, he failed to look into the history of mirrors as symbolic devices. He also assumed that the majority of the stories included bathrooms. He failed to look at the very arc of the Bloody Mary story. He directly thinks it has to do with menstruation, but if you look at stories simular to it, such as one in Japan and other areas, and ALL of the versions, not just the ones he selects it's more probable that Bloody Mary is an evolution of concerns about growing into a woman than it is about menstruation. It's the selective nature of his evidence that bothers me. He obviously spent a lot of trouble looking into the tale with the amount of research he did, but when he actually got to writing the essay, he did not look at all of the evidence and evolution of the folktale. He selected those bits of evidence that would support his thesis, rather than use the evidence to make his thesis.

This too, with the Little Mermaid, where he assumes that Mermaids can't breed. He gives no evidence for this, however, he continues on without thought to supporting this basic thing.

Don't get me wrong, I thought the book was brilliant in showing that one must analyze what is produced by cultures especially creatively. I really enjoyed the idea that it should be psychology, but I found that many of his theses were very, very selective in the kinds of evidence he brought out. This was to the effect that if someone had outside knowledge of the things involved, that it was hard to swallow the opinions stated. Some of them were basic, and sometimes it seemed deliberate. If the author cares to read this review, I would highly suggest looking into more about how the story has evolved if it has past connections, and try to collect information before making the thesis.

I do hope that any future essays he writes are not too Freud in nature, and are a lot closer to other philosophies of psychology (i.e. more expansive). It would be nice for him to try some other approaches, such as female psychologists as well. (Especially for analyzing female-based stories.) He never supported why it had to be Freud and no one else to analyze such folklore stories. After all, Freud had a lot of psychological issues himself. (Which I won't delve into for this review).

However, on the creative approach alone and for my paper, I'm giving it 3 stars. Though the theses are weak, and I don't agree because of a lot of personal outside knowledge, it has a unique approach to something that should be examined more closely. The supporting evidence will give anyone a start on the areas he says in his essay. The opinions may be bad and not well-supported but the other contents of the essay are generally well-done if one is willing to look beyond it and use it as a spring board to do their own research.

                  Book Description

A treasure of historically valuable insights that contributed to the development of evolutionary biology, this volume introduced the landmark contention that paleontology, embryology, ecology, and biogeography are inextricably linked in the process of classification. Its emphasis on advanced and original work gave major impetus to the study of science directly from nature.

                    Book Description

This Festschrift volume, published to honour both Dines Bjørner and Zhou Chaochen on the occasion of their 70th birthdays in October and November 2007, includes 25 refereed papers by leading researchers, current and former colleagues, who congregated at a celebratory symposium held in Macao, China, in the course of the International Colloquium on Theoretical Aspects of Computing, ICTAC 2007. The papers cover a broad spectrum of subjects, from foundational and theoretical topics to algorithms and systems issues and to applications, comprising formal methods, systems modelling, hybrid and real-time systems, specification and verification, as well as interval temporal logic.

Dines Bjørner is known for his many contributions to the theory and practice of formal methods for software engineering with special focus on abstraction and modelling, specification of systems and languages, and domains, requirements, and software design. He was a professor at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby, near Copenhagen; he was the founding director of the United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) in Macao during the 1990s; and a co-founder of VDM-Europe, which became Formal Methods Europe, an organisation that promotes the use of formal methods.

Zhou Chaochen is known for his seminal contributions to the theory and practice of timed and hybrid systems. Starting at Peking University and as a postgraduate at the Institute for Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he continued his career with an extended visit to Oxford University Computing Laboratory, where he was the prime instigator of the Duration Calculus, an interval logic for real-time systems. He also worked as a visiting professor at the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, at the invitation of Prof. Dines Bjørner. He was a principal research fellow at UNU-IIST during the period 1992-97, before becoming its director, an appointment he held from 1997 to 2002.

                      Book Description

This book collects Joseph Greenberg's most important writings on the genetic classification of the world's languages. Fifty years ago Joseph Greenberg put forward the now widely accepted classification of African languages. This book charts the progress of his subsequent work on language classification in Oceania, the Americas, and Eurasia,in which he proposed the language families Indo-Pacific, Amerind and Eurasiatic. It shows how he established and deployed three fundamental principles: that the most reliable evidence for genetic classification is the pairing of sound and meaning; that nonlinguistic evidence, such as skin colour or cultural traits, should be excluded from the analysis; and that the vocabulary and inflections of a very large number of languages should be simultaneously compared. The volume includes Joseph Greenberg's substantive contributions to the debate his work provoked and concludes with his writings on the links between genetic linguistics and human history. William Croft's introduction focuses on the substance and the development of Professor Greenberg's thought and research within the context of the discussion they stimulated. He also includes a bibliography of scholarly reactions to and developments of Joseph Greenberg's work and a comprehensive bibliography of his publications in books and journals.

                      4 out of 5 stars A history of histories.......2005-07-14

Stanley Morison is always a pleasure to read. He had enormous influence on twentieth centry type founding, and an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of type. It's a fascinating subject, partly because type design, more than just about any other art, is vividly aware of its own past, and is inextricably bound up with commerce.

Up to about p.38, this book keeps the promise of its title, the search for a "scientific" classification system (a teeth-gritting misuse of the word). It discusses the history of letter forms as they appeared in cast type. The second essay also discusses one strand in the tapestry of calligraphy's history.

After that point, however, Morison seems to switch gears. Gradually at first, he mentions earlier commentators on typography. By the end of the first essay, the topic is wholly the history of such commentaries, making this a history of typographic histories. It's a great starting point for someone about to embark on an academic study, but of limited use to the practicing typographer.

It's brief, though, and still interesting to any reader wanting to know more about the typography's history. It just doesn't say a lot about the letter forms themselves.

                        Book Description

Given the political, financial, social, and economic conditions inherited from Communist rule, Romania's new government concluded that a shock therapy approach to reform would create unmanageable chaos and enduring instability. Though committed to economic liberalization, decisionmakers espoused a gradualist approach to economic reform. The government pursued its objectives by implementing policies it considered functionally operational. Although Romania experienced the macro dislocations and downturns that are common in transitional economies in the region, the country sustained shallower recessions, lower inflationary spirals, and shorter production losses than many reforming economies. This study analyzes how, against calculated probabilities and within a relatively short time period, Romania has stabilized and assembled all the basic ingredients for a successful transformation from a centralized system to a market-driven economy. The lessons derivable from Romania's relatively successful experiment with systemic transformation could be beneficial to reform architects in all newly liberalized economies in Eastern Europe. The conclusions of this study reinforce the view that it is imperative to examine and foster the existing preconditions, including political, institutional, and financial components, before subjecting an economy to extensive and intensive shocks that could be judiciously mitigated or circumvented. Unlike other newly liberalized economies in Eastern Europe, where the once disgraced Communists have returned to power, sympathy for a centralized system has been steadily and swiftly declining in Romania. The primary factor in Romania's success, the author claims, is its circumspect approach to reform.

1 out of 5 stars Less than inspiring content.......2005-01-20

If you have a solid insight into the Web, there's no need to purchase this book. Many of the examples are dated and overly simplistic for readers looking to walk away with greater insights about the Web.

                          2 out of 5 stars Almost Obsolete.......2004-06-09

Most of the URLs and principles mentioned in the book went back to 2000, and they are no longer valid. I feel that an update is needed. It does have many great ideas, and the book is easy to read. Hope to see a new edition soon.

4 out of 5 stars A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web sit.......2004-04-05

A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web site. It clearly explains how to use metrics to quantify business goals. The tools, services, and techniques for measurement described in the book will be helpful for any e-business or other company with an Internet presence. A must-read

4 out of 5 stars A very good Web marketing book.......2002-03-28

This is one of the better books I've read on Web marketing. Some of Sterne's best advice comes in Chapter 1 when he writes, "Having a site that's cool and looks sharp is fine if that's all your target market is really after. The game, though, will go to those who come up with unique services. If you have to choose between fun, interesting, or useful, useful wins. Every time. Hands down."

Sterne starts the book talking about the basic questions in marketing: What are you trying to sell? Who are you trying to sell it to? And, what do they really want? He gives some good advice on working through the process of answering these questions and relates these issues well to Web related marketing. Chapter 3 is a great chapter on usability issues. It's refreshing to see a marketing guy like Sterne give so much attention to usability. There are ample references to Jakob Nielsen's research into usability issues, mixed with Sterne's own good thinking on the subject.

In the middle chapters of the book, Sterne talks about the different ways to effectively use the unique aspects of the Web --interactivity and personalization -- to market to your customers. I particularly liked his discussion of interactivity and flow in Chapter 4. He then goes on to discuss the use of the Web to do customer management and dedicates a whole chapter to partner relationship management. These are probably my least favorite sections of the book. He does give some good examples of companies effectively using the Web for this purpose, but I don't think the chapters on CRM and PRM where very thorough or insightful.

The last few chapters are dedicated to measuring the effectiveness of your Web marketing effort, managing your site, and what the future holds. In the chapter on measuring effectiveness, Sterne talks about the cost to reach and ultimately acquire a customer through your marketing efforts. The following information on Web log analysis was kind of thin, but Sterne does do a pretty good job discussing "The Softer Side of Assessment" like measuring customer satisfaction and reputation management. The chapter on managing your site was thin at best. For site management, I'd recommend Jessica Burdman's book, "Collaborative Web Development: Strategies and Best Practices for Web Teams."

Overall, I'd give Sterne an A on this book effort. The first half of the book is very, very good. The last few chapters felt somewhat rushed. Granted, Sterne picked some chapter topics that should be book topics, but even the summarized information didn't seem well put together. Maybe Jim was getting tired, or maybe I was getting tired. I finished reading this book on a red-eye flight home.

5 out of 5 stars Dramatically Change The Way You Do Business!.......1999-03-15

In today's online business world there is plenty of competition. Because millions of people are selling their products and services online, to successfully compete in this arena we must keep up on the latest trends in marketing strategies and put them to effective use. Jim Sterne offers a wealth of information in the updated second edition of his book World Wide Web Marketing that will dramatically change the way we do business!

Sterne covers a broad range of topics that contribute to successful online business operations. Hands-on effort involves the use of the Internet to register with search engines and specialized directories, participating in the newsgroups, searching for information about customers, using other technological means to market online, and making use of traditional marketing methods as well. Other involvement includes building relationships with valued customers, providing quality customer service and support, building brand loyalty, and offering free information and services to attract and keep new customers.

Sterne offers pertinent advice on thinking globally, another important business consideration. Pointing out that our Websites are seen by many around the world, Sterne advises his readers to take into account different languages and word meanings, cultural distinctives, domestic and foreign merchandise pricing, product locale availability, re-engineering Websites to accommodate a variety of people groups and countries, and other international and multi-cultural marketing strategies!

This is a well-polished book. The content is first-rate and relevant to today's online business needs. It is smooth-flowing, easy to read, and easily understood. Wiley is a respected publisher and this is one of their better books. It is highly recommended for anyone doing business online or contemplating moving in that direction! What direction are you moving in?

2 out of 5 stars aimed at budding Internet Marketeers.......1999-03-01

Sterne touches in this book the many aspects of the WorldWide Web without going into details. This makes it a useful book for anyone new in this field, but in the end its content is too shallow for professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Truely impressive book. Fun, interesting and USEFUL..........1998-12-08

This book is terrific for anyone who wants to set up a complete internet marketing strategy with clear business objectives and measurable ROI. Jim shows well how and why you should go beyond the classic internet brochure and where high added-value can be created for your customers/prospects. It is filled with hundreds of examples on what works on the web and what doesn't. I highly recommend it to anybody interested in internet marketing.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, just another "how to build a web site".......1998-12-05

I was really disappointed that someone who has such a rich set of experiences in the industry would write such a mediocre book. I didn't really learn anything new or gain any unexpected insights. There are 100 other "how to build a web site" books out there that have the same content and are undifferentiated from this.

I made the mistake of purchasing this book a month ago (September 1998). The information in the book is so far out of date, I consider it a waste of reading time.

I found this book disappointing. It is somewhat out of date now (so much has happened in the last few years). I was hoping it would teach me something new, and it didn't. It desparately needs updating for the late 1990s

I found this book to be extremely informative about marketing strategies on the internet. It provides useful tips on how to get interest in your company, without falling into the can of spam. It is also a book that can be read by non-technical people, a real plus in getting marketing-oriented people involved in your web site plan.
