Book Description
A History of Economic Theory offers a comprehensive account of the builders and building blocks of modern mainstream economics. Jurg Niehans shows how the analytical tools used by economists have evolved from the eighteenth century to the present. Niehans first surveys the development of classical economics from the scholastic and mercantilist traditions to Marx. He then follows the progress of marginalist economics from Thunen to Fischer. In the book's final section, he describes economic theory in the model-building era from Pigou and Keynes to Rational Expectations.
Building his story around the economists themselves, Niehans presents a pantheon of economic theory. It includes the famous from Smith and Riccardo to Samuelson and Friedman, as well as detailed discussions of lesser-known figures who have nevertheless made classic contributions. For each theorist Niehans offers a biographical sketch followed by a description, interpretation, and critical assessment of his work. With the current revival of interest in the history of economics, economists will find A History of Economic Theory not only a rich source of information but also a challenging analysis of the dynamics of scientific progress.
Customer Reviews:
Keynes's model in the GT never assumed fixed money wages.......2005-03-25
Niehans appears to be unable to offer an objective assessment of many of the economists that he covers in a series of short essays in this book.Basically,Niehans views the history of economic thought as if it were composed of two different kinds of economists, the good guys who believe in Say's Law as a general covering law, which Niehans defines as the postulate that in the long run price adjustments alone will always guarantee the full employment of all resources(resource scarcity) excluding necessary slack and down time for repair, maintenance, retooling, rest, etc.,and the bad guys, who don't accept Say's law as the general case, but only as a special case operating only when economies are on the boundaries of both their static(short run)and dynamic(long run)production possibilities curves with an optimal stock of capital goods. The bad guys are the mercantilists,Sir James Steuart,Sismondi,Malthus,Marx, the laterJohn S Mills, the later Marshall,Veblen, and Keynes. The good guys are Smith,Bentham,James Mills,Say,Ricardo,Senior,Pigou,Robertson,Kalecki,Friedman and Modigliani.I will concentrate on covering some of the errors of ommission and commission made, with respect to the work of Keynes in the General Theory(1936),by Niehans throughout his book. The first incorrect assessment of Keynes's work is the claim that Keynes based his model in the GT on the assumption of rigid money wages(See Niehans,pp.114,350,353,355,356,471 for a few examples).Nowhere in the GT does Keynes assume money wages are rigid except as a simplification in the early chapters of the GT.Keynes assumed that short run money wages were held constant.Note also that prices are fully flexible in all chapters of the GT.Since a firms economic decision to hire labor in the labor market is a function of the real wage, and the real wage is completely flexible,I have no idea about the point Niehans is trying to make, since A C Pigou made the same identical assumption as Keynes did about money wages in the short run-they were held constant in the short run in his 1933 book,The Theory of Unemployment. In chapters 19,20,21,and the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT,money wages are assumed to be fully flexible in both the upward and downward direction.Keynes concludes in chapter 19 ,as a result of his analysis, that money wages that are sticky in a monetary economy are to be preferred to fully flexible money wages because, dynamically, sticky money wages are a necessary condition for the stability of money values over time.Niehans offers no evidence for his claim that Keynes's model in the GT was not fully articulated and left many confusions to be cleared up(Niehans,p.355).Niehans offers no textual evidence for his claim that Kalecki far exceeded Keynes in economic substance, analytic rigor and in lucidity of exposition.(Niehans,p.376).He offers no support for his claim that Keynes was neither a strong nor original theorist on page 444.I do not recommend this book for the novice reader. However,an experienced reader can overlook these deficiencies and profit from reading some of these essays.
Outstanding Reference on Economists and their schools.......1999-07-24
The only book I've seen, outside the Palgrave reference book, that gives brief vignettes on different economists and their schools. Author does not mince words, writes strong, and gets to the point. A nice one-volume tome. Also includes some mathematics, which is nice.

Description:
Acidification of forest soils in Europe and North America has been an important concern over the last decades. The last area-covering survey of forest soil acidification in Flanders (North Belgium) goes back to 1985 [Ronse A, De Temmerman L, Guns M, De Borger R. Evolution of acidity, organic matter content, and CEC in uncultivated soils of North Belgium during the past 25 years. Soil Sci; 146, (1988), 453-460] and highlighted a significant acidification of the upper layer (0.3-0.4 m) of forested podzols during the period 1950-1985. The present study aimed to assess (1) to what extent further acidification of forested podzols occurred during the period 1985-2000 at different depths and (2) whether the average annual acidification rate accelerated or slowed down between 1985 and 2000 compared to the period 1950-1985. Average soil pH-KCl values of podzols in northern Belgium dropped during the period 1985-2000. This decline extends to a depth of about 50 cm but was most pronounced and significant in the A horizon. In the A"0, A"1 and A"2 horizons, average pH dropped with 0.2, 0.3 and 0.1 units, and in the B"i"r and C horizons with 0.1 units. No change in average pH value occurred in the B"h horizon. Average annual acidification rate of the A"1 horizon was significantly higher in the period 1985-2000 than in the period 1950-1985. Changes in pH occurred in the entire soil profile during the period 1950/67-1985 likely because sulphate was the major form of acid deposition before 1985. After 1985, acid sulphur deposition decreased with more than 50% in North Belgium. In contrast, ammonium deposition almost doubled between 1950 and 1980, which may explain why soil acidification between 1985 and 2000 has been restricted to the upper soil horizons.

Description:
The interaction of radiocaesium with peat under two moisture regimes was studied in laboratory experiments and by growing ryegrass in pot experiments to simulate changing field moisture conditions. A peat untreated and treated with 5% by weight of clay containing 46% illitic minerals, and a peaty podzol naturally containing 4.5% mineral matter on a dry weight basis were contaminated with ^1^3^4Cs and incubated. The soils were exposed to 8 wetting-and-drying cycles or kept constantly wet during 40 days. Extraction of the peat with 1 M CH"3COONH"4 (pH 7) repeated after each wetting-and-drying cycle indicated increasing ^1^3^4Cs fixation with time of incubation. The peat treated with clay showed a much higher ^1^3^4Cs fixation than that without clay. The pot experiment with the incubated soils showed a ^1^3^4Cs transfer to ryegrass of the same order for the peaty podzol as for the peat treated with clay. For the peat untreated with clay the ^1^3^4Cs transfer to ryegrass was much greater. Wetting-and-drying the peat, with or without clay, increased the overall yield of grass and the concentration and uptake of ^1^3^4Cs over 5 consecutive harvests. K-fertilisation increased the yield of plant material (except for the peat with added clay), decreased the concentration of ^1^3^4Cs, but had no significant effect (p=0.05) on the resultant uptake of ^1^3^4Cs. Mixing clay with the surface layer of organic soils appears to be an effective means of decreasing radiocaesium transfer to field crops in fallout situations.

Description:
Some well-drained podzols on quartz sands in the Netherlands and neighbouring Belgium and Germany show mottling in all horizons due to selective removal of organic matter. Phospholipid analysis and morphology of the mottles suggests that this removal is due to a combination of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes. Investigation by pyrolysis-GC/MS of organic matter in the depleted zones as compared to their surroundings indicates (1) selective decay of relatively palatable components, (2) residual accumulation of aliphatic biopolymers such as cutan and suberan that produce alkanes, alkenes and methylketones upon pyrolysis, and (3) accumulation of microbial polysaccharides and N-containing compounds. Although the selective organic matter decay in the depleted mottles is similar to the process that causes degradation of organic matter at the top of the B-horizon and its conversion to an E-horizon, the essential difference is that, while decay at the E-B-horizon transition in podzols is governed by the presence or absence of aluminium and iron, the micro flora that is responsible for the decay mottles acts independently from metal concentrations.

Book Description
Demand for timber and fibre continues to grow and is being met by increased reliance on plantation forestry. Many of the plantations that are being grown around the globe are non-native species that have characteristics of rapid growth and good commercial qualities. In some cases, the high rates of production are a result of the absence of native herbivore and diseases. This limited pest status is threatened as pest species move around the globe. At the same time there is concern about threats of these non-native plantation species on native communities and the impact of changing climates on forest productivity. This volume explores many of these issues for the first time.

Book Description
This book focuses on introduced plant species: their origins and impacts on native vegetation and ecosystems as well as the potential for their control. Aimed at advanced students and land managers concerned with plant community conservation, it includes practical explanations, case studies and an introduction to basic techniques for evaluating the impacts of invasive plants.
Download Description
The global spread of plant species by humans is both a fascinating large scale experiment and, in many cases, a major perturbation to native plant communities. Many of the most destructive weeds today have been intentionally introduced to new environments where they have had unexpected and detrimental impacts. This book considers the problem of invasive introduced plants from historical, ecological and sociological perspectives. We consider such questions as 'What makes a community invasible?', 'What makes a plant an invader?' and 'Can we restore plant communities after invasion?' Written with advanced students and land managers in mind, this book contains practical explanations, case studies and an introduction to basic techniques for evaluating the impacts of invasive plants. An underlying theme is that experimental and quantitative evaluation of potential problems is necessary, and solutions must consider the evolutionary and ecological constraints acting on species interactions in newly invaded communities.

This textbook-style treatment of the subject offers a lot of useful advice for marketing on the Web now and in the future. The first section starts off by highlighting the six return-on-investment (ROI) models: brand building, direct marketing, online sales, customer support, market research, and content publishing and services. Using examples, Net Results shows how different tactics have helped various kinds of Web sites achieve their goals. The book provides guidelines on design and what information to include as well as tips on developing a domain brand.
Part 2 focuses on audience development, discussing how to use search engines, directories, and online communities to help customers find your Web site, plus innovative ways that helped develop brand identity for some companies. This section also details how public relations and Web advertising are vastly different for the Internet and explains why.
Each chapter ends with a list of Web resources that you can look up to see examples of successful Web sites. All of these resources are gathered and grouped by category in an index at the back of the book. --Cristina Vaamonde
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Lowe says, "I use it as a graduate Internet textbook.......1999-10-29
Net Results:Web Marketing that Works is the book I selected as the textbook for my graduate Internet Marketing class at San Francisco State University. It covers all aspects of marketing online. It is easy to read and understand. The information is comprehensive and on point. It has plenty of real world examples and resources for more information. Currently there is no viable textbook for the classroom because there is a lack of serious research on the internet. This book combines excellent Internet content and an easy to read style that makes it a joy to read. Kudo's to Rick Bruner for this excellent book. This is the third semester I have adopted it.
An excellent source of 'real' business web tactics.......1999-09-07
Many books about the internet are not very useful(can you say internet bull ! ) but this is one book that i am delighted to say is very useful. It provides real world examples and many case studies. Any internet professional that wants to do anything will benefit from this book. At Newdelhi.net we used some of these tactics and have had tremendous success since then.
One of the two best Internet books I have ever read.......1999-09-03
I have read just about every book about web site development and promotion that I could get my hands on -- and the ones I haven't read, I have skimmed at the bookstore. I would rate this as one of the top two. The advice is clear and eminently sensible. And from my experience, it has invariably been right! Mr. Bruner, in my opinion, knows exactly what he is talking about.
A useful guidebook, with lots of relevant case studies........1999-08-23
"Net Results: Web Marketing That Works"
Review by Madanmohan Rao (madanr@planetasia.com) Bangalore, INDIA
One year after publishing, this book is still a useful read for Internet marketers and Web strategists. If you are looking for solid practical advice from a Web solutions company that has actually made the Net work for business advantage, then this guide by USWeb and Rick Bruner is for you.
Nine chapters and an appendix cover a wide range of issues from Web return-on-investment and information architecture to online contest case studies and audience development.
Staying away from the "get-rich-quick" hype, the book urges online marketers to prepare for the long haul. "Successful marketing on the Internet requires nothing as much as persistence. Relationships, unlike bits and bytes, require careful seeding, diligent nurturing, and constant attention," the authors urge.
According to market research firm Jupiter Communications, Web sites fall into three categories: brochureware (static sites not much more than an online brochure), show-biz (infotainment sites geared towards brand building), and utilitarian (which provide great customer convenience).
For products about which there isn't a lot to elaborate, or which do not cost much - such as soap and breakfast cereals - banner ads and online sponsorships would be suitable forms of online marketing.
Some companies in this category have gone beyond this level (such as the Coke site where users discuss and trade novelty bottles, or the GirlSpace site developed by paper products company Kotex). Detergent company Tide has a useful online "stain detective," with stain-removal remedies for different kinds of fabric types and colours.
On the other hand, utilitarian sites offer Web surfers a genuine service, such as package tracking on the Federal Express site.
The Web offers businesses a return on investment in six key areas: brand building, direct marketing, online sales, customer support, market research, and online publishing.
The makers of Lexus cars reported more purchase inquiries and actual sales generated by online ads via the Pointcast "push" news service, targeted at users in Miami. Fragrance Counter claims it is making a profit selling perfume online. Tower Records reports that its site could become the biggest and most profitable sales outlet in its chain of music and video stores.
"Customer service on the Web has moved beyond nice-to-have to must-have," according to Carter Lusher, VP of Gartner Group's Customer Service and Support Strategies division. "It costs 10 times as much for a company to acquire new customers as it does to retain existing ones," he said. Hence the need to improve customer service by any means necessary, online and offline.
Asking all users to register at a site (to collect demographic information) may work for some sites (which offer high-quality content, such as the Wall Street Journal), but it may turn away too many users.
Sites using pattern recognition and collaborative filtering software for personalisation services include Amazon.com and MovieFinder.com. Database-driven sites are well-suited for online customisation, such as TV Guide's site which allows for TV listings customisable by zipcodes or day of the week.
The Web is particularly useful for real-time marketing of short-lived offers, such as auctions of discounted tickets (used by airlines for flights that have not been sold out).
"The Web is infinitely measurable. Every Web marketer should be poring over their logs to see what's working and what's not," the authors advise.
Marketers should also be searching for links from other related sites (other than search engines), such as specialty hubs, or "uber-links" (prize links which perform better than most others).
In terms of innovative marketing, marketers can try sweepstakes, treasure hunts, trivia quizzes, interactive mysteries, writing, recipes, and photo contests. Yahoo conducted a spectacular "Find the Y" contest, featuring its site without the famous "Y" - but with cartoon character Dilbert.
Yoyodyne conducted a "Get Rich Click" sweepstakes, where users had to browse through sponsor sites to find the contest logo and win prizes. Amazon.com conducted an interactive writing contest with Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Updike.
Marketers should also consider offline promotion schemes. For instance, USWeb helped "Star Trek" promotion by enlisting the support of cybercafes. A company called Zapworks promotes sites through mousepads distributed at cybercafes.
Public relations activities for corporate marketing are also being done online, by companies like PRNewswire and Businesswire. According to a 1996 MediaSource survey of more than 600 magazine and newspaper business editors, press releases accounted for 14 per cent of stories, while journalists generated 59 per cent based on their own sources.
An emerging trend is commission-based rates for transactions resulting from clickthroughs, as in Amazon.com's affiliates program. In this case, Amazon.com's banner ads contribute to brand recognition even if it does not lead to an actual sale.
Companies like PointCast, with a subscriber base of over 2 million users, also use interstitial ads. LinkExchange offers segmented targeting to over 10% of all sites on the Web (especially hobbyist sites), and shows more than five million ads a day.
Many of the tips outlined in the book are showcased in three case studies drawn from USWeb clients: Macromedia, Netiva and Women's Wire.
Intranet-application company Netiva chose to go with USWeb's recommendation of a compact quick-loading page, whose next level opened up a wide range of product information.
The Women's Wire site (www.women.com) approached USWeb for drawing traffic to its Stock Quotes and Fashion Wire features, via "grassroots" promotion on smaller sites and mailing lists. Macromedia turned to USWeb for promoting the launch of its Dreamweaver product.
Upcoming trends and challenges include the rapid pace of technological innovation and issues like online privacy.
"WebTV is going to be a hue force on the Web in the near future," according to George Lawson, creative director at USWeb. But it poses tremendous design constraints, due to colours vibrating on the TV screen.
In sum, this is a useful collection of tips, success stories, and reference information for online marketers. An online companion to the book would have been a welcome addition and could have helped extend the shelf-life of the book.
A priceless tool.......1999-08-18
