    Book Description

In this book, sociologist William I. Robinson offers a theory of globalization that follows the rise of a new capitalist class and a transnational state. Growing beyond national boundaries, this new class comprises a global system in which Japanese capitalists are just as comfortable investing in Latin America as North Americans are in Southeast Asia. Their development of global, interconnected industries and businesses make them drivers of world capitalism.

Robinson explains how global capital mobility has allowed capital to reorganize production worldwide in accordance with a whole range of considerations that allow for maximizing profit making opportunities. As a result, production systems that were once located in a single country have been fragmented and integrated externally into new globalized circuits of accumulation. What this means, however, is not simply that factories are located overseas where labor might be cheaper, but rather that the whole production process is broken down into smaller parts and each of those parts moved to a different country, depending on where investment might be highest. Yet at the same time, this worldwide decentralization and fragmentation of the production process has taken place alongside the centralization of command and control of the global economy in transnational capital.

In turn, this economic organization finds a political counterpart in the rise of a transnational state. The leaders of global businesses and industries think about themselves and how they live in new ways. Hegemony in the twenty-first century, Robinson argues, will be exercised not by a particular nation-state but by this new global ruling class through the machinery of this transnational state. Robinson observes, for example, that global elites, regardless of their nationality, increasingly tend to share similar lifestyles and interact through expanding networks of the transnational state. Globalization is in this way unifying the world into a single mode of production and a single global system and bringing about the integration of different countries and regions into a new global economy and society. But the new global capitalism is rife with contradictions, such as the growing rift between the global rich and the global poor, concludes Robinson. The twenty-first century is likely to harbor ongoing conflicts and disputes for control between the new transnational ruling group and the expanding ranks of the poor and the marginalized. Sure to stir controversy and debate, A Theory of Global Capitalism will be of interest to sociologists and economists alike.

      Book Description

While most of the popular and academic debates explore ideas of globalization, The Transnational Capitalist Class goes one step further and provides theoretically informed empirical research to explain and deconstruct the process of globalization as seen by the corporations themselves. Using personal interviews with executives and managers from over eighty Fortune Global 500 corporations, as well as already published sources, Sklair demonstrates how globalization works from the perspective of those who control and oppose the major globalizing corporations and their allies in government and the media. The book explores two major crises of globalization - class polarization and ecological sustainability - and shows how the transnational capitalist class attempts to resolve these crises and evaluates its own success and failure. Sklair's unique approach brings a fresh perspective to what has become a key debate of our time.

              Description:
Phellinus weirii (Murr.) Gilb. causes laminated root rot (LRR), a major disease affecting growth and survival of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco (Douglas-fir) and other commercially important conifer species throughout the Pacific Northwest. This disease is known to spread to a replacement stand by root contact between replacement trees and residual infected stumps and roots from the harvested stand. One strategy to manage LRR is to reduce the residual inoculum on a site through application of a fungicidal chemical to infested stumps. The first two studies in this series established that chloropicrin (trichloronitromethane), applied to infested stumps, largely eliminates P. weirii from most of the belowground biomass and determined the effective dosage to apply. This third study approximated an operational application and based treatment success on reduction of LRR in the replacement stand. The study area was an 8-ha, 65-year-old naturally regenerated second-growth stand that was predominantly Douglas-fir. The stand was surveyed preharvest and postharvest (clearcut). Each P. weirii-infected entity (standing dead or down trees and stumps) was marked, and the location of its center was mapped. Circular plots (0.04ha) were located so as to include concentrations of infested stumps. Plots were stratified based on their estimated biomass of inoculum into eight replicate blocks of four plots each. Three chloropicrin treatments and an untreated control were assigned randomly to four plots in each of the eight blocks: (a) 100% labeled dosage to all stumps, (b) 20% labeled dosage to all stumps, (c) 100% labeled dosage to only visibly P. weirii-infected (stump-top stain or advanced decay) stumps, and (d) control (nothing done to the stumps). Holes were drilled into stump tops, a dose of chloropicrin poured in, and the holes plugged. The labeled dosage was 3.3ml of chloropicrin per kilogram of estimated stump and root biomass. Douglas-fir seedlings were planted in the winter following treatment application. When the stand was considered established, each plot was thinned to an inter-tree spacing of 2.4m and the trees tagged. Diameter at breast height, total height, and mortality of trees were recorded every 2-5 years. A total of 1041 tagged trees were observed for 16 growing seasons following treatment. Application of chloropicrin to stumps in the harvested stand did not influence the rate of LRR-caused mortality or growth of Douglas-fir seedlings in the replacement stand.

                Description:
Phellinus weirii (Murr.) Gilb. causes laminated root rot (LRR), a major disease affecting growth and survival of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco (Douglas-fir) and other commercially important conifer species throughout the Pacific Northwest. Stump removal or nitrogen (N) fertilization, or both, have been suggested as management strategies for some root diseases but have not been tested previously for LRR in a replicated field study. Independent studies, using the same experimental design, were established in five Douglas-fir stands in Oregon and Washington. The stands were surveyed preharvest and postharvest (clearcut). Each P. weirii-infected entity (standing dead or down trees and stumps) was marked, and the location of its center was mapped. In each clearcut, a 2x4 set of factorial treatments of stump removal in combination with N fertilization was applied to 0.04ha circular plots and replicated five to seven times. Treatments, applied in the fall, included stump removal with a bulldozer (either all stumps removed or the plot left undisturbed) and broadcast fertilization with ammonium nitrate (0, 336, 672, or 1345kgNha^-^1). Douglas-fir seedlings were planted in the winter following treatment application. When the stand was considered established, each plot was thinned to a spacing of about 2.4m inter-tree spacing and the trees tagged. Diameter at breast height, total height, and mortality of trees were recorded every 2-5 years. A total of 7827 tagged trees on 239 plots were observed for up to 27 growing seasons following treatment. Stumping caused a significant reduction in seedling mortality due to LRR at all five study areas. The mean LRR-caused mortality on stumped and nonstumped plots was 2.4 and 9.1%, respectively. Fertilization did not cause a significant change in LRR-caused mortality of seedlings at any of the study areas. Nitrogen fertilization before planting increased growth of Douglas-fir seedlings but only in some stands. Nitrogen fertilizer can have a positive residual effect on growth of Douglas-fir for at least 23 years. Effects on soil of heavy equipment used in stumping operations did not reduce subsequent Douglas-fir survival or growth. There was a mean reduction in wood volume of 24.8% in areas where LRR was observed compared to areas where it was not found.

                          Book Description

At a national level, Mexico is awakening to the Internet. Since 1995, over 100 companies have registered with the federal telecommunications regulator for value-added services licenses to become Internet service providers (ISPs), yet the Yankee Group believes that only a fraction are actually viable competitors in the supply-driven market. While Internet access is most widespread in the country's corporate and academic segments at present, companies are devising innovative campaigns to increase adoption rates among both residential and corporate users. Achieving extensive coverage will remain a challenge in the short term, though, since the national teledensity rate is 10% and personal computer penetration merely an estimated 3.0-3.5%. However, as is occurring in many other Latin American countries, a developing Internet consciousness is propelling more widespread acceptance in Mexico. In just the past six months, Telmex and Acer have launched an innovative alliance to bring computers with installed Telmex/Prodigy Internet accounts within consumers' reach via more affordable monthly payment plans. Over the past year, companies have also succeeded in developing relevant, Spanish-language content for the Mexican market, further contributing to more vibrant growth. The Yankee Group believes that Mexico's Internet accounts will achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 89% over the next five years, resulting in 5.4 million accounts with 8.1 million users by 2003.

                                    Description:
This study examined the differences between demographic and behavioral characteristics of customers who purchased products online and customers who did not. Additionally, this study investigated determinants that explain a customer's online reservation intention. To meet the purpose of this study, the researchers surveyed customers from eight hotels in Korea. The data were analyzed using @g^2 analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The two types of respondents differed in regard to their age, educational background, weekly browser usage, and the number of years of Internet use. Furthermore, the results showed that the determinants affect the respondents' online reservation intentions differently according to their past online purchasing experience.

Data were collected between 12 October 1997 and 16 November 1997. First, a series of Kruskal-Wallis tests are conducted to examine the impact of national-cultural on the use of information sources. After determining that the national culture significantly influences a traveler's external information search behavior, a correspondence analysis is utilized to examine information search behavior of the residents and nationals of each EU state. This analysis identifies five distinct market segments based on respondents' information search patterns. Findings suggest national culture is likely to influence a traveler's information search behavior.

                                              Book Description

This important book compares the growth achieved in Japan and Europe with the frustrated growth in the major societies of mainland Eurasia. More broadly, it is about the conflict in world history between economic growth and political greed. Eric Jones proposes two fundamentally new frameworks. One replaces industrial revolution or great discontinuity as the source of change and challenges the reader to accept early periods and non-western societies as vital to understanding the growth process. The second offers a new explanation in which tendencies for growth were omnipresent but were usually--though not always--suppressed. Finally, the erosion of these negative factors is discussed, explaining the rise of a world economy in which growth has recurred and East Asia takes a prominent place.
Eric Jones has written a substantial new introduction for this edition, which includes discussions of early evidence of growth episodes and the relation of these points to the Industrial Revolution, and the relevance of the East Asian "miracle" to his thesis.

Eirc L. Jones (autor of the much discusses book on The European Miracle, 1988) discusses world history from an economical perspective. By training he is an economist. The basic concepts are intensive economic growth (innovation) and extensive economic growth (more of the same). According the Jones extensive growth must develop into intensive growth at some point in time. You can only have so many workers or machines in your factory before it comes economically useless (law of deminishing returns). China during the Sung (or Song) dynasty (960 - 1279 AD or CE)experienced extensive growth and reached unprecedented levels of economic welfare, commercialisation (market economy) and consumerism. Industrial output of iron during the Sung period was not reached again until the late 18th century in Britain. But China never experienced a so called Industrial Revolutian like Britain or other Western European countries. Why not? This 'frustration' (according to Jones) is explained by referring to values (culture), institutions (law), state action, and military conquest. This is a thought provoking book, but recent research on China (Pomeranz and Bin Wong) dismiss Jones answers.
