Book Description
This book describes why, for the past twenty-five years, Japanese productivity has been growing more rapidly than productivity in the U.S. Unlike other books on the subject of the Japanese success in manufacturing, it looks at what actually happens in factories. The author brings his experience of working at the Yanagicho Works of the Toshiba Corporation, in Kawasaki City. Like so many Japanese factories, this one is highly productive, efficient, and flexible. While the factory is ordinary looking on the outside, its workers are anything but ordinary as they constantly strive to improve the way they work and the quality of the products they produce. The key to this is the continuous creation and application of knowledge throughout the factory, from workers on the shop floor, to research and development engineers, to top management. Fruin explains how Japanese culture and religion prepare workers for their role in this process of creating and disseminating knowledge.

Description:
In spite of raising Asian per capita food production by 27% and making India food self-sufficient, the Green Revolution has received much criticism for its environmental and socio-economic impacts. Taking on board post-development critiques of 'speaking for' Third World 'others', this paper seeks to examine the Green Revolution from the points of view of people directly affected by it. Comparative, historically-informed research in three villages for which 1972 baseline data exist reveal that the Green Revolution has ensured, in the words of one marginal farmer that 'nobody sleeps with an empty stomach nowadays'. Most villagers associate the Green Revolution with increases in living standards and weakening community-based wealth hierarchies. Nevertheless, socio-economic inequalities between certain Scheduled Castes and other villagers are still very apparent.

Customer Reviews:
An absolute "must-have" for anyone considering the benefits of a medical coding career........2007-09-02
Co-authors Donna Avila-Weil, RHIT and Rhonda Regan, CCS, CCS-P combine their expertise in the updated second edition of Independent Medical Coding: The Comprehensive Guidebook for Career Success as a Medical Coder. Independent Medical Coding is an in-depth guide to pursuing medical coding as a career - an excellent opportunity, given that demand for skilled medical coders currently outstrips supply. Chapters cover how to gain the necessary education, as well as cultivating the needed interpersonal and organizational skills; how to become credentialed; specifics on different types of coding systems; how to establish an independent coding business; alternative careers for a coding specialist; and much more. An absolute "must-have" for anyone considering the benefits of a medical coding career.
Not a bad starting point, but not an all-purpose go-to resource........2007-01-04
Donna Avila-Weil, Independent Medical Coding (Rayve Productions, 1999)
Looking for information on being a medical coder? This could be an interesting start, but it likely won't complete your education.
Independent Medical Coding spends its first third or so going over some general concepts you'll need to know in coding, though the key word here is "general"; you'll end up using this as a jumping-off point to find more detailed books about the ins and outs of coding.
The rest of the book is devoted to more general discussion on starting your own home-based business, all of which once again is of a general nature and will probably send you searching for more detailed books on the same topic, if you're looking to start your own business rather than code for a company. So this one is worth your time if you're brand-new to the search, but be aware you'll be buying more books after this. ***
Title is misleading - and other reviews are woefully bad.......2003-07-17
The word "comprehensive" in the title is the objectionable term here since this book is essentially a series of short, insufficient passages. There is nothing here that couldn't be found for free on the internet or with a little bit of work reviewing *any* basic "starting your own business books."
I'll be returning this book. Ironically, I'm out the return postage cost, but since the book is really only a handbook and uses a big font, the cost probably won't be much to ship such a small book back. My advice is to not waste your money unless you need a primer on basic business principles and a reference for where to get the medical coder training.
Independent Medical Coding.......2002-03-01
This book is really a great resource. I have devoured it. There is so much useful information in it and it is the first book I have found on this subject that goes into all it would take to make this a great career move. I was looking for a great home business and I think this book will be a great help. I wish I had found it sooner. Good job for the authors.
An excellent resource for coding professionals.......2000-03-20
I was very pleased to find this book on Independent Medical Coding. I had been considering just such a career, but didn't know where to begin. This book was exactly what I needed. It gives the experienced coder an alternative career path into entrepeneurship without doing "billing". This book provided me the first stepping stone in what is soon to be my new career. I would like to see the authors do an even more in-depth book, providing even more information about this field. Because books of this nature are so rare, a comprehensive reference would be wonderful, and I would gladly pay extra for the information. The book as written, however, is an excellent resource and I definitely recommend it to anyone already skilled in coding who is interested in working for themselves. Thank you for writing this book!

This book addresses the contemporary debate about the 'Third Way' in European social democracy, by analysing the i exemplar /i case of social democracy-'the Swedish model'. The author argues strongly against the widely held belief that the nature of contemporary capitalist restructuring and globalization has rendered traditional social democracy obsolete.

The tips included in this book are intended to give those with minimal knowledge of Internet Marketing techniques a simple way to develop an active, effective Web site. Customer Reviews:
Wish I'd found it sooner..........2000-01-27
After spending $50+ on magazines and other books on how to successfully market my service via the Web, I wish I would have discovered this book initially. Why read a manual when the essential checklist has already been developed? This book includes hints and reminders helpful at the design stage all the way to site maintenance. Although marketed for executives, anyone who has an Internet presence will find the information in this book valuable. It's a resource that I'll use frequently.
Bad, Basic, Expensive, Simple, Outdated, Short, Redundant.......2000-01-09
The book is made of 132 tips, around 3 or 4 per page, with no more than 160 words per page. It would be a good introdutory book for middle school students. However, if you at least read Business Week once a month, nothing new will come out
A must-have desk reference for web masters & managers!.......1999-10-19
This is a classic case of "less is more". This little book is deceptive. It is packs more real knowledge and usable ideas and tips into fewer pages than anything else on the market. The authors clearly have "been there--done that" when it comes to designing and supporting web business.

Book Description
A minority of the businesses in the United States has an Internet presence, and fewer than half of these companies are seeing a significant return on their Internet Marketing efforts. Why? Because these businesses don’t know how to market their sites effectively to their target audience. They either take the “If you build it, they will come” approach or they expect their Web site developers to do the marketing for them.
Unfortunately, most developers are graphic artists, not marketing specialists. The tips included in this book are intended to give those with minimal knowledge of Internet Marketing techniques a simple way to develop an active, effective Web site. Anyone from a small business owner to a senior marketing executive within a large, global organization can use this book to quickly and easily make their company Web site better.
Added bonus: Because the Internet is a dynamic and rapidly changing medium, buyers of this book also receive access to free online updates and additions to ensure their copy of this publication remains current until the next edition is published.
Customer Reviews:

Much of our material comes from our industry experience through our Web development company Raydiate (raydiate.com) and through speaking engagements with Silicon Valley executives.
We hope you enjoy this book, and find the tips useful for your Internet marketing endeavors.
Sincerely,

Book Description
Contributing to the literature on European integration, this book investigates the perceptions of political actors towards the creation of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in Europe. The research is largely based on personal interviews conducted with key informants in central banks, finance ministries, employers' organizations, and trade unions in Britain, France, and Germany. It examines why actors perceived EMU to serve or frustrate their interests, concluding that actors favored the EMU for a variety of reasons.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating account of EU economics.......2001-05-17
Verdun aims to discover why, given that EMU greatly reduced national sovereignty, there was so little public discussion of its costs and benefits. As she noted of EMU, "This transfer of national sovereignty can arguably be considered to be one of the most far-reaching formal transfers of sovereignty to the European level that the European Community (EC) members have witnessed to date." She studied the ways that central bankers, Ministries of Finance, employers' organisations and trade union leaderships in Britain, France and Germany all perceived EMU. The bankers, Ministries and employers' organisations agreed that EMU would strengthen the market mechanism in Europe. They also agreed that it would assist their efforts to create a single European state. As Verdun observed, "EMU will eventually necessitate more integration of economic, fiscal, social and labour policies." Some quarters of the TUC hoped that associating themselves with the EU's decision-making process would increase their power. But the more the TUC claimed to set the EU agenda on social and employment issues, the more it linked itself to the EU's disastrous impact on Britain's industry and welfare. Some trade union leaders thought that the EU would restore the influence over economic policy-making that they had lost at national level. But cosying up to the employer, whether European or British, weakens our unions, not strengthens us. Some thought that possible gains from the Social Charter would justify the certain losses from labour market flexibility. But who talks about the Social Charter today? Did it save any of the 96,000 manufacturing jobs destroyed in Britain last year? So why was there so little public discussion of EMU's costs and benefits? Verdun does not finally explain, but one suspects that it was because its benefits would accrue only to the ruling classes of Britain, France and Germany, while the public, the vast majority of us who have to work for a living, would suffer all the costs.
