Beyond Free and Fair: Monitoring Elections and Building Democracy draws on worldwide experience since the mid-1980s to evaluate international election monitoring and domestic monitoring, and their contributions to democracy promotion and democratic change. In this book, Eric Bjornlund provides an overview of what election monitoring is, where it comes from, and how it is currently conducted, and he educes general lessons for democracy promotion. Bjornlund reports on actual practice, including case studies of particular election monitoring efforts and the author's own experience in the field, and on a few previous efforts to synthesize guidelines and lessons learned.

Case studies include Cambodia, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, and Indonesia, with the last especially providing an opportunity to show how domestic monitors can be supported by international monitors, funders, and advisers. Bjornlund also devotes a chapter to the influential election monitoring work of former president Jimmy Carter.

The author criticizes the tendency to view elections and election monitoring narrowly rather than as part of broader strategies to build democracy. He makes practical recommendations about how election monitoring should evolve in the future if it is to continue to contribute to genuine democratization.

This system can be used worldwide to address electoral problems but it can also be used for many other purposes to guarantee that only persons so authorised can carry out certain activities.

Voters today often desert a preferred candidate for a more viable second choice to avoid wasting their vote. Likewise, parties to a dispute often find themselves unable to agree on a fair division of contested goods. In Mathematics and Democracy, Steven Brams, a leading authority in the use of mathematics to design decision-making processes, shows how social-choice and game theory could make political and social institutions more democratic. Using mathematical analysis, he develops rigorous new procedures that enable voters to better express themselves and that allow disputants to divide goods more fairly.

One of the procedures that Brams proposes is "approval voting," which allows voters to vote for as many candidates as they like or consider acceptable. There is no ranking, and the candidate with the most votes wins. The voter no longer has to consider whether a vote for a preferred but less popular candidate might be wasted. In the same vein, Brams puts forward new, more equitable procedures for resolving disputes over divisible and indivisible goods.

This book is a must for any owner or manager of an equine breeding facility. It is technical, but relatively easy to read and complete. Whether you're an expert whose been in the business for years or a novice just getting started, this is the primer you've been looking for. It's one you'll want to keep handy for looking up answers to new questions or reviewing the answers to your old ones. Kudos to the author for a job well done. It's worth noting that no matter what breed of horses you work with, you will still find this reference invaluable.

Book Description

In this volume "East Asia" is used as a unit of political and economic analysis to reveal an approach to "modernization" that is distinct from the Western model. The volume especially focuses on the interaction between nations of East Asia; the advantages and limits of export-led growth; relations between such processes as state formation, industrial growth, urbanization, and the movement from status- to class-based social hierarchies; and the links between state, market, and civic culture. This book would be fine if you've never used a computer and know nothing about the Internet. Then, if that were the case you wouldn't be reading this.
So, while the author is complimented for taking the time and effort to write this work, it does not seem that the information content is enough to justify the selling price.
Hoped is that later revisions will have more useful content. For now, the book is inspirational in that it demonstrates that it can be done.

This easy to understand book is excellent for the internet sales newbie. Stephanne tells it just like you had sat down across from her desk and said "I'm thinking about starting to try to make some money on the internet...what do you think I should do?".
It moves right along and gets straight to the point. I will refer back to it oftem!

This book is, simply put, a stepping stone to added education. This is a bare-bones basics and meant to give you a mere taste of what you are researching in an attempt to let you discover for yourself if this is the path for you or not.

What this book lacks in volume it makes up for in it's straight-forward simplicity. It is not meant to overwhelm a reader who is looking at using an internet presence for the first time. This book artfully teaches the basics - from there you feel more comfortable going on to 'thicker' reading.

If you are new to the idea and trying to find out what's for you, this is the place you need to start. There is an old cliche that sums this book up for us: You must learn to crawl before you can walk.
