Book Description

One thing that mature, developing, or undeveloped nations have in common in today's global economy is the necessity to construct, repair, refurbish, and modernize their infrastructure. More and more governments are turning to the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) process to accomplish this expensive and enormously challenging task—allowing private developers to design, finance, construct, and operate revenue-producing public projects, and then turn them over to the community at the end of an agreed payback period.

The first book to explore this innovative approach to privatization, Build, Operate, Transfer covers the creation of BOT projects from the ground up. Using a real-world, case-oriented approach, it provides a comprehensive examination of the engineering, construction, and financial skills required to bring BOT ventures from the planning stage to design, construction, and operation. From the Channel Tunnel to the Dulles Greenway, the book examines both successful projects and troubled ones, extracting key information on what sets them apart—including such crucial factors as the importance of public support and government control in ensuring a positive outcome. You will also find specific coverage of construction techniques and procedures, plus financial comparisons, demographics, and other statistical data.

Whether you are a student or a professional working in engineering, construction, finance, or government, BOT cannot be ignored as an effective way to build infrastructure projects quickly, efficiently, and at minimal cost. This book equips you with both the comprehensive information and the practical guidance you need to put this dynamic practice into action.

The only book available on the BOT approach to private construction and maintenance of public projects—complete coverage from the ground up

Contractors the world over are discovering how to use private-public partnerships to build much-needed infrastructure projects quickly, efficiently, and at minimal cost. This book thoroughly explores the combination of engineering, construction, and financial skills required to bring these Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) ventures from the planning stage to design, construction, and operation. Based on a real-world, case-driven approach, Build, Operate, Transfer examines specific BOT projects, identifying key factors necessary to their successful implementation, and offering important guidance on avoiding common pitfalls. This practical book features: A full introduction to BOT systems, with diagrams of construction techniques and procedures, complete sample contract, and more

    Product Description

Business Process Improvement Through E-Collaboration: Knowledge Sharing Through the Use of Virtual Groups is written around two main theses. The first is that business process improvement, a key element of the most influential management movements since the 1980s, can itself be considerably improved by the use of information technology. The second is that process improvement affects organizational knowledge sharing in a non-linear way, and that the use of e-collaboration technologies can boost this influence by increasing the breadth and speed of knowledge dissemination in organizations. Business Process Improvement Through E-Collaboration: Knowledge Sharing Through the Use of Virtual Groups discusses key findings in connection with effects of e-collaboration technologies on business process improvement groups, making this book an important tool for academia and businesses everywhere.

        Book Description

Drawing on complex systems theory, this book investigates how human societies deal with change in linked social-ecological systems, and build capacity to adapt to change. The concept of resilience is central in this context. Resilient social-ecological systems have the potential to sustain development in a manner that does not lead to loss of future options. Resilient systems provide capacity for renewal and innovation in the face of rapid transformation and crisis. Case studies and examples from several geographic areas, cultures and resource types are included; merging forefront research from natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities into an innovative framework for sustainable systems.

4 out of 5 stars Good Training Tool.......2005-06-08

EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES may be one of the most important training tools for all of your employees. They don't have to be the ones on the "front lines," people manning the phones or e-mail contacts for customer service. Doane and his partner, Rose Sloat, have diagnosed the problem of faulty customer service and they accurately see it as a pandemic that proceeds from the top down. Let's face it, if your CEO could care less about customer service, none of your customers are going to find you have made it a priority. That's why this book may actually turn the tide in a beleaguered industry.

Everyone wants to be shown a little respect. We've all been through situations in which, for one reason or another, we have been treated badly and we would like redress. As Doane and Sloat point out, this happens in our personal lives as well. Customers return to sites of commerce where they have been recognized as human, interpellated and really "seen," sometimes for the first time. However we all have our excuses for why we really didn't go the whole nine yards for our customers. And one of them might well be, "It is not our company policy to please our customers." Let's face it, there are many organizations, even service organizations, in which customers are not as important as, say, overhead or bottom-line profitability. And the short-sighted cost-cutters often argue that "we don't really need customer service because they're going to buy from us anyhow."

Wrong! That's just another excuse, in the finely tuned analysis of Canton, Ohio-based educators Darryl Doane and Rose D. Sloat. Their book is by turns hard-hitting and sort of humorous, with many a doleful anecdote. It reads very easily. It could have been a bit longer I think. But hopefully they will have a sequel of sorts coming out through their innovative "Learning Service" family of experiences. Listen to these two. They have been there, on both sides of the fence, and they know of whereof they speak.

                  Book Description

A decade after overtaking the U.S. economy and achieving global dominance, the Japanese juggernaut faltered dramatically. Today the question is not who dominates whom, but rather how we manage our now-obvious interdependence. The answer is the legions of Japanese and American managers and officials involved in the day-to-day and face-to-face negotiations that drive commerce. In this invaluable book, three experts pool their decades of experience to provide a pragmatic guide for Westerners doing business in Japan. The authors explain Japanese negotiating techniques and provide practical advice on conducting effective meetings with Japanese clients.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-08-23

I'm working in Silicon Valley for a company that deals regularly with the Japanese. Personally, I have lived and worked in Japan, so I am not completely new to the complex culture. Recently, I've been searching for a current book that addresses specifically problems that can arise and solutions to those problems in negotiations between Americans and Japanese. This book does just that.

The first portion of the book compares Japan and the US in cultural terms. Newcomers to Japan will find this section very useful. I enjoyed the section, as it allowed me to review material that I had learned through reading other books on Japan and through personal experiences. The second section, the Business of Face-to-Face Negotiation, was the reason I bought the book. It provides a detailed analysis of negotiating with the Japanese - who to send, what character traits are effective in dealing with Japanese, timing, process, etc. In addition, all of the information is supported by anecdotes of the authors, who all have long, impressive careers in working with Japan.

Overall, it think the book is excellent and would recommend it to anyone who negotiates with the Japanese - whether that person is a newcomer to the Japanese culture or a Japanophile.

                        Book Description

The ozone layer is threatened by chemical emissions, the climate is endangered from fossil fuels and deforestation, and global biodiversity is being lost by reason of thousands of years of habitat conversions. Global environmental problems arise out of the accumulated impacts from many years' and many countries' economic development. In order to address these problems the states of the world must cooperate to manage their development processes together - this is what international environmental agreements are designed to do. But can the world's countries cooperate successfully to manage global development? How should they manage it? Who should pay for the process, as well as for the underlying problems?

This book presents an examination of both the problems and the processes underlying international environmental lawmaking: the recognition of international interdependence, the negotiation of international agreements and the evolution of international resource management. It examines the general problem of global resource management by means of general principles and case studies and by looking at how and why specific negotiations and agreements have failed to achieve their targets.

                          Book Description

Developing countries frequently experience trade shocks and the policy implications of this have been debated for decades. This important book is Volume 1 of a comparative study covering 23 countries, using a common methodology to estimate the effects of shocks. The conventional wisdom has been that private agents, in particular peasant farmers, could not be trusted to use windfalls wisely. This was, and continues to be, the main rationale for stabilising taxation of export crops. The convention was also that windfalls accruing to the public sector were a bane since governments had low savings rates. The evidence in this definitive study supports neither generalisation. Trade shocks typically lead to high savings rates, irrespective of whether they accrue to private producers or to the government. However, the case studies find substantial policy errors so that windfalls are often not translated efficiently into permanent income increases and indeed often lead to a reduction in output. The studies argue for a drastic revision of the case for government action in response to trade shocks. Volume 1 deals with Africa, Volume 2 with Asia and Latin America.
