Book Description
The Knowledge Advantage brings together a truly stellar line-up of the world's greatest knowledge gurus, including Lester Thurow, Edward O. Willson, W. Brian Arthur and Blur co-authors, Stan Davis and Chris Meyer. Each of these knowledge champions tackles a different aspect of the new economy's most vital resource, including: how to turn knowledge into products; understanding the dynamics of knowledge creation; building knowledge into strategy; profiting from the new economics of knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2001-11-20
Editors Dan Holtshouse and Rudy Ruggles bring together 14 experts on knowledge management, including Peter Drucker, Alan Webber of Fast Company magazine and Stephen Denning of The World Bank. The best thing - and worst thing - about this compendium is that it is an anthology. Positively, it serves the unique purpose of offering an introduction to different views. If something piques your interest, you can investigate it further. But, unfortunately, you may be disappointed by a problem endemic to anthologies: lack of in-depth analysis. The book's four sections focus on the role of knowledge individually and strategically (in two theoretical chapters) and on knowledge's role on an organizational and economic level (in two more practical discussions). This is not a "how to" book about leveraging intellectual capital. Instead, we [...] recommend it as a brief history of the evolution of knowledge in the context of the working world.
A few minor nuggets in an important field.......2001-07-18
This 292-page book contains 14 chapters of varying degrees of interest and practicality. The four main sections cover knowledge as related to the individual, the organization, strategy, and the economy. The authors include such luminaries as Edward O. Wilson, W. Brian Arthur, Blur co-authors Stan Davis and Chris Meyer, and Lester Thurow. Some chapters, such as that by Wilson are fascinating but not terribly useful to the executive. Some of the most interesting and useful chapters are "The Knowledge-Based Organization" by Christopher Bartlett, "The Role of Knowledge in the Connected Economy" by Davis and Meyer, and "Brainpower and the Future of Capitalism" by Lester Thurow. Overall, many of the contributions are frustratingly tantalizing but ultimately yield little actionable information. This problem is not limited to the academic contributors. Although somewhat abstract, Stephen Denning's piece on how the World Bank applied knowledge management details their three-part process, their 7-part definition of knowledge management, and their blunders, luck, unexpected lessons, and toughest issues. The topic of knowledge management and knowledge processes certainly is important, but most of the chapters of this book fail to show how to implement it. The exceptions are well worth reading. The remainder of the book can be quickly scanned for an overview of current (2001) thinking on the subject.

Book Description
A classic overview of the science of complexity from the prestigious Santa Fe Institute.
There has been a remarkable growth in collaborative academic research focused on complexity in recent years. One of the greatest challenges is to discover which features are essential and which shared by all the seemingly disparate systems that are described as complex. This book describes current views on this subject held by various eminent scholars associated with the Santa Fe Institute, including Murray Gell-Mann, Brian Arthur, Stuart Kauffman, John Holland, and Kenneth Arrow.
Customer Reviews:
Well...SOMEONE didn't get invited to an SFI conference..........2006-02-13
This is groundbreaking (and clearly very controversial) work. Read the review below: this stuff gets a rise out of people. Anyone wanting to become familiar with original, seminal studies from the complexity science movement will want this book.
I laughed, I cried..........2002-04-07
Well...where to begin without going further back?
This book is a compendium of papers, most from members of the Sante Fe institute. That is, the papers are by the self-proclaimed "experts" in the field of complex adaptive systems (complexity as it is termed by some). Although published in 1999 it is mostly out of date as a reference but it stands as testament to something I think is more interesting than pure science.
What we have here is a prime example of how dogma (religion) begins and sadly, impedes any chance for progress. At this point, perhaps I should suggest that anyone reading this who hasn't heard of Kuhn, Wittgenstein and Prigogine to go and read a bit. And then you need to understand that we have completed the whole genome-mapping fiasco and "discovered" something that goes against what the high gods of complexity, genetics and evolution have been preaching: we don't have more than 100,000 genomes we have 30,000.
Ok, now back to the book. The papers, as I stated, are out of date. All interesting results here are tied back to the "magic" number of 100,000 genomes. That is simply due to the fact that according to the diverstity of cells and specific proteins in our bodies combined with present theories we need that many. So one would think, right away, that any new theory that is "more correct" than the old ones would quickly point out this large discrepancy.
Well, no one did find this. Instead they just muddle around withsome nifty math and even more exciting computer simulations and then settle back to make pronouncements. And what bombastic statements the high priests of complexity pronounced! The best part of this book are the transcripts of discussions about the papers from the big names, notably Gell-Mann, Anderson and Kauffman.
One would think that a bit of reading in philosophy would really have helped this lot to see beyond their noses. That is, how can there be a "true science" (uttered by one during a discussion) when science is simply a compression of knowledge and the whole idea of "truth" implies more compression? This is laughable when your own theory says that you can never tell if something is optimally compressed (just read Chaitin and Kolmogorov); I ask again, how do you know you have a "true science"?
Yes, egos are rampant here and it is enough to make you alternately laugh and then cry now that we see how far off the mark the "science" is. There are slights on Freeman but really, Freeman has more "science" ("theory that matches observation" to quote Gell-Mann) than anyone in this collection. In fact, Anna Wise has more science in her books about brainwaves than this group.
Disappointed? You bet. I fail to see how winners of Nobel prizes and "Genius" awards could end up being so far off the mark. So in the end, I can only rate the intended content (science) as "2 stars" but the high comedy and drama make the historical content worth 5 out of 5. Enjoy it for that only!

Customer Reviews:
The Price Tag is a JOKE for a Huge Swipe File..........2007-08-18
First of all, his sales copy isn't that great. If he claims that these letters have made his clients (and not even himself) millions then it goes to show that any half-a-brain can write a decent sales letter and make money.
This book was over $100 and maybe worth $35 at best. Why? You can collect your own swipe file for free by just saving your "junk" mail.
I analyzed a lot of the copywriting and established that Harlan Kilstein isn't really that great. Some of his grammar is off. He doesn't write a headline or subhead properly. Some of the letters are capitalized while others aren't, ruining the continuity of the piece(s).
I recommend you study Dan Kennedy (The Ultimate Sales Letter) or study Gary Halbert's letters (if you can find them) because those two are the two best copywriters on earth. (Gary Halbert is now deceased as of this year but his copywriting legacy will live on forever.)
Furthermore, it seems that Harlan Kilstein just did copywriting for companies and never took his own risk in doing his own mailings (like I do). Therefore, does he care how the copywriting turns out? Does he give it 100%? And does he really know what the results were when the mailings went out?
He claims that he is giving you million-dollar sales letters but then admits that one (or more) he's written were never mailed. What!? That makes the title sort of deceiving, right?
I do like his book title, though..."Million Dollar Sales Letters You Can Legally Steal to Suck In Cash Like a Vacuum on Steriods."
That would make an excellent headline (in a slightly different variation) for any kind of business opportunity piece.
It is inaccurate, though. Since he wrote those pieces for clients as a "work for hire" situation, you cannot "steal" or plagarize any of the sales letters word-for-word, no matter what he says. Even as the author of the materials, he cannot give the legal go-ahead for just anyone to copy his work because he did it as a work-for-hire for someone else.
Check out Herschell Gordon Lewis and his "swipe file" (or any of his copywriting books) or just collect your junk mail. Within a short time you'll have your own million-dollar sales letter treasure chest.
One last comment: For being a "swipe" file, there aren't that many sales
letters anyway!
Not recommended.
This book is a STEAL.......2006-02-19
WOW this book is truly amazing! THis is a concentrate of powerful sales writing techniques. Thank you for putting it all together in one book. !
You want to become a world class copywriter and make tons of money...unfortunately...you can't do it without this book.......2006-02-17
When you need to bring in the cash for a client or yourself,
you don't mess around with 'guessing'.
You use PROVEN 'direct sales in print'. You use
PROVEN money-making ideas. You use PROVEN letters
that have gone before you and proven themselves
with a duffelbag full of 'benjamins'...letters
that have been PROVEN to bring you MONEY.
(and lots of it.)
Harlan has assembled the BEST money-making letters he
has ever produced for himself and his clients. They
have worked because they have brought in MONEY. And
that's the only result that matters in the end - whether
you're selling products or asking for charity - you're
looking to BRING IN MONEY. You want SALES.
And in order to do that, you need to know what
WORKS. What has PROVEN to bring RESULTS, and
will continue to bring results again for you
in the future. Harlan will show you how to
get those results YOU want with these PROVEN
letters in his new course.
Harlan explains each letter before you see it,
so you understand WHY it worked...and...why it
will work again for you.
There is zero hype or trickery in Harlan's
letters. Only RESULTS.
Here's just a taste of what this course will
tell you:
* The real reasons why Gary Bencivenga, John Carlton,
David Garfinkel, Bob Bly, David Deutsch, Parris Lampropoulos,
Stephen Pierce, Alex Mandossian, Yanik Silver and
Perry Marshall all praise this course (page iii-vii)
* What is the defining factor that seperates
world class $40,000 upfront 15% royalty
copywriters from $500 per 'gig' copywriters? (page 3-15)
* 11 Personal Improvement Letters (Pulled a
combined total of over 8 figures.)
* How to write a letter so good, that you
end up having a New York Times Best-Seller
(page 138-152)
* How Harlan launched Stephen Pierce's career
using 10 pages...and...exactly how you can
replicate his success for yourself (page 177-187)
* 5 Financial letters that will change your
financial destiny, if you choose
* The letter written for the book "The Greatest
Direct Mail Sales Letter" (If the letters in
"The Greatest Direct Mail Sales Letters" were
good...imagine how amazing the letter FOR THE
BOOK was!) (217-226)
* 6 Marketing letters that world class
copywriters study...and...1 that was
written right after a seminar put on
by "the greatest living copywriter"
...and...1 smash-hit letter you've
seen that was written for one of the
greatest marketers alive
* 3 Health related letters that will make you
rich, because they were modeled after some of
the top earning copywriters of all time...and...
if you model them, you too will make mucho dinero
* How to get a $250 valued consultation with
Harlan...for free (page 336)
* Why are John Carlton, Gary Bencivenga and
Dan Kennedy all mentioned together on one
site...and...how can it make you more money?
(page 338-351)
* A site with more breakthrough information
than any sane person can use in a lifetime... (page 356)
* and way, way more...
Instead of buying anything with unproven
theory...or heck, just theory in general
(which is useless) - study this course with
PROVEN money-making power letters.
And to be perfectly blunt, you will not
become world class (or even make a lot of
money) unless you study this book. I know
that's not what you 'want' to hear, but
it's what you NEED to hear so you make
tons of cash in your business.
Have this book shipped to you immediately.
Get it now.

Book Description
Steal this e-Book! is a collection of articles and letters about electronic publishing and electronic rights by Danny O Snow, with additional contributions by Richard Eoin Nash, Dan Poynter, Wade Roush and Glenn Sanders. It traces the evolution of e-Books from “ancient times” (1999) to the present. With the benefit of hindsight, Snow has added introductory comments to each chapter, from today’s perspective. Snow rejects the notion that current challenges in DRM (“digital rights management,” also called copy protection, encryption, etc.) prevent authors and publishers from earning profits. He also reaffirms his long-standing conviction that the inherent economic power of electronic publishing virtually insures that e-Books will play an important role in the future of the book industry.
