    Book Description

Corporate governance is an active area of research and public debate. The recent generalization of "shareholder value" ideas and institutional investment, the establishment of codes of best practice for boards of directors, and the controversy about whether market oriented or bank/relations oriented systems are better for economic performance provide cogent examples. The volume takes stock of the most recent research in the topic, criticizes the standard agency view, and presents new ideas and analysis about the role of competition, the political economy of corporate governance, and the effects of different systems on growth and performance.

Slowly, he begins to learn more effective ways of interacting and incorporates the disciplines of systems thinking and organizational learning, to the huge benefit of himself, his colleagues, and his organization. Key Systems Thinking Principles, in addition to Action Learning Steps for Leaders, are provided at the end of each chapter for you to implement on your way to becoming more of a `big picture' systems thinker!

    5 out of 5 stars Manager/Leader Dilemma.......2002-08-07

The Big Picture is a story that all managers/leaders can easily related to on a day-to-day basis. In today's workplace change is a constant, yet the dilemma we face is that we rarely are able to implement change as we would like. Rarely do we get the buy-in from our employees needed to bring about change. Not only does The Big Picture help us to understand "why" we don't get buy-in, it also, provides us with clear steps to see the big picture and get all our employees involved. This book is a must for all managers who want to become transformational leaders. I can't wait to read the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible volume by one of the best.......2007-08-12

Dillman's "total design method" is well illustrated in this volume. This work is an accessible introduction to designing one's own survey. The book is written pretty well, too.

Trying to get accurate results is what survey design is all about. This book emphasizes that and then runs through the process, step-by-step.

The book deals with some of the key issues in survey design: (a) what type of survey method (face-to-face, mail, phone), (b) sample selection, (c) construction of questions and the total questionnaire, (d) the logistics of administering the survey, (e) data analysis, (f) reporting the results.

The work concludes with a title that says it all: "Advice, Resources, and Maintaining Perspective."

All in all, a useful and accessible introduction to survey research and how to minimize errors.

    2 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2002-08-05

This book was published in 1994, prior to the internet boom. It covers telephone, mail, and face-to-face surveys. It doesn't cover email surveys or internet-based surveys. It also fails to mention scaling or data-types. If you're looking for ideas on questions, or are concerned about sampling techniques, you'll find some info here. This is one of those "partial references": it covers some things, but leaves enough out that you'll need to buy another reference to compliment it. If you're looking for the latest in survey methodology, this book doesn't have it.

5 out of 5 stars helped with graduate course.......2002-01-05

This book helped me with an assignment in a graduate course in marketing. Thus I hold it in high regard, mostly it had examples
of questions that were helpful, there was also some other advice
I hope will get me a good grade.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent research into survey methodology!.......1998-12-20

I'm currently finishing up my MA thesis, and I could not have built a stronger framework for the survey part of my work without Salant's book! The ideas are fresh, tested, and accurate. An excellent book for anyone who wants to conduct a survey and get reliable results.

        Book Description

A leading scholar of international relations tells why the rise of virtual economies will make military conquest obsolete.

This is a sweeping account of the paradigm of state power in the coming century. It forecasts what kind of nation will rise to the top: "Imperial Great Britain may have been the model for the nineteenth century," writes Rosecrance, "but Hong Kong will be the model for the twenty-first." The key to this change is the changing value of land as a source of power: the control of territory brings control of agricultural and industrial raw materials, but this is now less important because economic and political power now derives less from agriculture and industry than from expertise in technical and research services, product design, marketing, and finance. The results are a new kind of world power, a new emphasis on education and training of work forces, a decline in the frequency and importance of wars, and fierce competition for markets.

What will power look like in the century to come? "Imperial Great Britain may have been the model for the nineteenth century," Richard Rosecrance writes, "but Hong Kong will be the model for the twenty-first." We are entering the Age of the Virtual State - when land and its products are no longer the primary source of power, when managing flows is more important than maintaining stockpiles, when service industries are the greatest source of wealth and expertise and creativity are the greatest natural resources.

Rosecrance's brilliant new book combines international relations theory with economics and the business model of the virtual corporation to describe how virtual states arise and operate, and how traditional powers will relate to them. In specific detail, he shows why Japan's kereitsu system, which brought it industrial dominance, is doomed; why Hong Kong and Taiwan will influence China more than vice-versa; and why the European Union will command the most international prestige even though the U.S. may produce more wealth.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good but lacking empirical research.......2001-07-12

This book has been written from what the scholars of International Relations would call "Pluralist - Liberalist" perspective. The argument in the book about the "head" and "body" nations is convincing but it is not adequate to fail to acknowledge the realist interpretation. It is easy to see that it is too early to predict that the trade relations between states will undermine the security interests as the states perceive them. And a big negative for the book is the lack of empirical research.

5 out of 5 stars very thought provoking.......2001-07-08

This book brought me to the recognition of a number of features current in our society and business world, and helped me to put a number of puzzling events in perspective. Just the idea that land is now less important in the economic world itself is an important revelation. I think everyone in the investment community, as well as the academic area of the author, should read this book.

1 out of 5 stars When does a virtual state monopolize the use of force?.......1999-11-23

Rosecrance feels that China and India and a few other places are about to become mere body countries -- body and head are his terms --manufacturing goods for head countries, such as the US, which will specialize instead in services.

His argument sounds to me suspiciously like the old fungible commodities / surplus value contrast, once used to characterize The Developing World and rationalize its economic subjection to The Developed World: the low profit margins in the former's economic activities ultimately made them prey to the high profit margins in the latter's -- Celso Furtado and many others torpedoed this idea long ago.

I also find it difficult to accept that China and India et al. willingly will don the old Latin American latifundia role of becoming merely offshore manufacturing and assembly sites for US and European managerial / owner consumers. There will be resistance to this, not least from all the US and European - educated hitech entrepreneurs who now are back home in Bangalore and Shanghai setting up startups: there are some very bright folks among them, and they are not entirely ignorant of the economic history which Rosecrance blithely assumes away in his book.

So there may be more conflict than Rosecrance postulates -- _will_ be, if the US and Europeans use their current economic and political muscle to force their current world market capitalism views on the Chinese and Indians and others. President Clinton is trying this out this week (11/22/99) in Florence on the Europeans, and some among even them are balking.

The very old international law view that the essential function of The State is the monopolization of the use of force -- somebody's got to do it -- could come back into fashion, then. Rosecrance also assumes away this conflict issue: he thinks that Developed and Developing, locked into a happy dance of mutual economic dependence, somehow never will find anything to fight about, or at least will see personal loss in fighting.

This begs the question of inequality, the fatal flaw in Mercantilism and Colonialism and a number of other World Economic Orders which foundered long before Rosecrance's Virtual Statism is going to founder. I expect myself that Chinese computer design and Indian software design, and the _local_ finance and management of same, all are going to be pretty good, actually -- and those people will fight to create and keep their comparative advantages in these and other economic areas. Trade is merely warfare by peaceful means -- an equation which easily becomes reversed under stress.

The Virtual State is a good idea, but Rosecrance's formulation of it is not: the new flows of goods and services have been analyzed by others -- the issues which Rosecrance derives from this novelty are old, and their resolution is very old and not at all virtual. This is a simplistic book, uninformed by economic history. Rosecrance preaches to the choir in the US, but his ideas will play differently overseas.

Michael Mathiesen presents a market-smart and Net-savvy approach to doing business on the Net--in a spam-free and definite value-added manner. His sensible advice comes from the lessons of long experience. The core of his approach is a 12-step process to target your audience, refine your message, and deliver it as a service rather than a sales pitch. And he insists that you have a real service to offer, which helps companies rethink their relationship with their customers--especially those online who can spot an advertisement disguised as a garbage give-away site in less than three clicks. He also covers the best places to put your message, good advice on dealing with money over the net, and some success stories to inspire and fuel the imagination. Included is a CD-ROM of Internet access software.

1 out of 5 stars An outdated, elementary lesson in Internet Marketing.......1998-06-22

Good try, Mathiesen. Millions of people are scrambling for the answers to 'Net marketing and e-commerce questions; so I can't fault you for trying to answer their call. But don't waste trees publishing books that are outdated in months. Put it on the 'Net. If you pride yourself in having a site that updates your book, don't let it be Netscape's site where your readers won't even find you with a site search. Are you still updating it?

Readers, why spend money on a book about a topic that is changing daily? One example is that Mathiesen mentions, "The Internet represents a communications tool that rivals television and will one day merge with television." Like WebTV, perhaps? Also, the book brags that it offers free Netscape browser software ($50 value"), when Netscape is now downloadable off the 'Net for free.

If you must read this book, wait for the new edition. Or buy this one and marvel about how much has changed. Better yet, communicate with people in the industry, read 'Net and computer magazines, and surf for answers.

                  Book Description

Under the direction of Nobel laureate Robert A. Mundell and Paul J. Zak, eminent contributors to Monetary Stability and Economic Growth offer a unique insight into the way that economists analyze the causes of money (mis)management in the US, Latin America, Europe and Japan, and prescribe stabilizing reforms. Their lively discussion provides answers to various questions including:

                  • How does monetary stability affect economic growth?
                  • How can nations best achieve monetary stability?
                  • When is monetary union desirable?
                  • Which anchors for monetary stability are likely to be most effective?
                  • How will the euro affect financial markets and the international monetary system?
                  • Is international monetary reform possible, and how can it be achieved?

The mechanisms that link monetary policy - including foreign exchange regimes and the international monetary system - to economic performance are examined, and the ways in which countries can stimulate economic growth are explored.

This superb narrative volume, brought alive by the debate between leading economists, is contextualized by the editors' excellent introduction. It will be of immense interest to students, researchers and teachers of macroeconomics and financial economics as well as professional economists.
