Book Description

Most of the world's people live in "developing" economies, as do most of the world's poor. The predominant means of economic development is economic growth. In this book Gary Fields asks to what extent and in what circumstances economic growth improves the material standard of living of a country's people. Most development economists agree that economic growth raises the incomes of people in all parts of the income distribution and lowers the poverty rate. At the same time, some groups lose out because of changes accompanying economic growth. Fields examines these beliefs, asking what variables should be measured to determine whether progress is being made and what policies and circumstances cause some countries to do better than others. He also shows how the same data can be interpreted to reach different, even conflicting, conclusions. Using both theoretical and empirical approaches, Fields defines and examines inequality, poverty, income mobility, and economic well-being. Finally, he considers various policies for broad-based growth.

3 out of 5 stars Best for those with a disposition for statistical analysis........2003-11-22

This is a book about wealth and poverty. Gary Fields statistically shows the inequality of poverty, income mobility and economic well being (or the lack thereof) through `distributional analysis'. He takes various aspects of macro economics and analyzes and draws a conclusion for each aspect.

The index and reference sections are excellent. Disappointing is the lack of an appendix. An appendix with information that would collaborate the footnotes alluded to in the text would have been helpful to have at hand (i.e. a footnote like "for profiles of whose these poor countries are see World Bank 1997").

Also, aggravating is Field's comparisons, using statistics of various countries throughout the book, but then moving on without concluding or inferring anything (I.e. Korea spends 10% of its educational budget on higher education while Venezuela spends 43% --- ok, so?).

If you are not a student or teacher with a concentration in international economics, or a graduate student in international development, or a practitioner with a international agency, then this book will probably not be valuable to you. However, if you have affinity for statistics, and a strong bent towards international issues like poverty, inequality and distribution of wealth, you will find this book a statistical storehouse. Conditionally recommended

5 out of 5 stars Lucid and thorough!.......2001-04-04

The author focuses on three concepts: Poverty, economic inequality, and economic mobility. The book discusses different methods of measuring these concepts, and reviews an impressive of empirical evidence. The book is of interest for anyone who cares about these issues and wants a review of the latest work on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The new Bible in Knowledge Management.......2000-04-12

This book will be a new bible in knowledge management, as was the Fifth Dimension (P.Senge)or the Knowledge-creating Company (Nonaka). It is one of the most interesting books available on knowledge management, for academics and practitioners. It provides a new vision of knowledge management and has a real value-added, compared to most of the books currently published in this area, which all propose the same ideas and success-stories. The editors and authors (among them Von Krogh, Ross, Blakler, Nonaka, Probst) are the best academics in the area, in America, Europe and Asia. Their theoretical background offer a comprehensive view of knowledge in organizations. They provide a new vision based on a constructivist and pragmatist approach of organizational knowledge and action, which contrast with the classical positivist school of thought. However, their book is not only for academics, but also for high-level managers concerned with implementing and measuring knowledge. The excellent quality of the conceptual background offers a basis for reflection, and they provide useful tools and examples of knowledge creation and measurement. The best book in this topic currently!

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2005-12-01

This book will not help you start a handyman business. It is all about the authors ramblings concerning his work clothes, tools, hardware and not at all about how to run the business. Anyone interested in running a handyman company will already know the technical side, and really what the author even provides there is useless. The business side is why I bought the book and it is not there.

1 out of 5 stars Serves me right for not reading reviews first!.......2005-01-12

Anyone who is starting a handyman business and doesn't already know the elementary information provided in this book is NOT smart enough to own and operate their own business.
There is a much better book out there geared towards contractors, but the information is much more useful. This book is a waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Not as advertised!.......2004-08-15

Not very informative for anybody that has any handyman skills to begin with. Would be ok for somebody that has no skills whatsoever. Has nothing to do with "Starting and Running a Successful Business". I might give it to my kids because that is all it is really is good for. Very disappointed!

      2 out of 5 stars pipe dream.......2004-06-16

If you think you are going to run a contracting business with no overhead forget it.Go ahead and try and find jobs without advertising.Hmm why without advertising.Because if you try and advertise ,and don't have a contractors license and liability insurance. All those people who do have them and pay thousands a year for the privilege will be turning you in so fast your nail gun will spin.Unless you live in the Boonies ,most Counties and Towns require rafts of paper work and other license, before you can pull a nail in someone's home. The days of Gommer the fixit man are over because we live in such a litigious society, liability insurance is a must and it costs thousands. There is really no way to start a contracting business on the cheap and run it in a professional manner.this seems to be the case with most of these start your own contracting or repair business books out there. They forget about or gloss over the whole liability issue, like it's no big deal. You damage someone's home or property and you will see what a big deal it becomes.I am not a contractor ,I have a small 3 bay auto repair shop , and my liability runs almost 20 thousand a year. That's quite a big bite for a guy just starting out.Even if you stay away from large jobs, say a customer wants you to install a new window ,in most towns that would require a contractors license, check it out well before you just jump in.It takes a lot more then just the tools and the knowledge of how to use them to run a home improvement business.

      2 out of 5 stars pretty lame.......2004-03-28

This book I thought was dumbed down to the point of sad. All the info in it was, and should be, known by anyone remotely knowledgable about houses and handyman type work. It seems to have been written for the high school drop-out needing a direction. I would not recommend unless that person was completly clueless.

                Book Description

There is no doubt that electronic marketing has contributed positively in the life of modern societies, mainly the consuming societies. It allowed purchasing of materials cheaply without any limit, and without any restrictions. It also gave the chance to make a free selection and comparison between the prices of goods at the electronic department stores throughout the Internet. All such facilities are given to the consumers in a very short time without causing them to leave their office or home. In addition, the Electronic Marketing has exterminated the monopoly of goods and materials, all such acts of course are for the consumer's benefit. However, in addition to such advantages there are many disadvantages of such type of marketing; the Electronic Marketing has deleted the privacy of the consumer, because all of his movements through the Internet have been divulged and under control, in addition to lack of exclusive security through the Internet. Accordingly, many losses equally occurred to the customer and the merchant due to such acts of hackers who reveal the information and credit cards details. In addition, the Electronic Marketing caused many merchants, agents and monopolists to be vanquished because it gave the chance for direct communications between the producer and the consumer without passing through them; as such, many of such merchants have been yielded away from the way of this new technology. The Electronic Marketing was able to cause an upset down in many concepts and standards of economic science that have existed for so many years. Doors are still open for every new in this assumption and endless world as there are no limits that can stop such human ambition.

                                      Product Description

The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA) passed after more than seven years of debate, and most of its provisions became effective on October 17, 2005. How has BAPCPA changed bankruptcy law? What are the advantages and pitfalls for creditors and debtors? Is there any good news for debtors? Has the practice of bankruptcy really changed since the implementation of BAPCPA? What effect has the credit counseling requirements had on bankruptcy filings? The manual will address these questions and also provide an update on bankruptcy court decisions interpreting the new law. The new legislation has also changed Chapter 11 in a number of respects, particularly for small business debtors. The manual will discuss those changes, and the implications of those changes on small business owners and those that represent them. By reading this manual, you will have a leg-up on the changes implemented by BAPCPA, and will be ready to protect and inform your clients accordingly. You will also be able to analyze how means testing may affect your client's case, and how an initial indication that the presumption arises can change to the presumption does not arise. Learn about changes in exemptions, credit counseling requirements, and about the circumstances where debtors' attorneys will be called upon to vouch for the schedules and statement of affairs of the client. Discover how these changes, and others, may affect your advice to clients and the documentation you require from your clients. Learn about the consequences of filing a Chapter 7 case that is converted to Chapter 13 and why even Chapter 13 cases will be harder for debtors, and the new rules for small business bankruptcies.
