    Book Description

Decision-making can be difficult and often results in necessary trade-offs, e.g., safety versus price in the purchasing of an automobile. This work provides a model of trade-off difficulty, focusing on its antecedents and consequences. The authors advance a new framework for the integration of the emotional and cognitive aspects of decision-making and argue that consumers perceive and appraise their choices in light of their goals and potential coping strategies.

      Book Description

Many organizations have seen dramatic improvements by implementing a Six Sigma system, including better efficiency, reduced errors, and increased profits. But for the individuals charged with implementing this system, it can be a long and arduous journey. The Six Sigma Path to Leadership: Observations from the Trenches was written to serve as a support guide for these individuals who may get lost or frustrated on their journey toward Six Sigma improvement. Author David Treichler has assembled a collection of stories showing how others handled these same situations, including the good and the bad with many how-to (and how-not-to) examples. The book is written for anyone - from senior management to the curious novice, with the intent to encourage and assist everyone, wherever they may be in their own Six Sigma journey.

The Six Sigma Path to Leadership is not intended to teach the specific tools or techniques of Six Sigma, but rather to inspire and motivate Six Sigma professionals to lead and teach others in the organization. The stories shared within will spark the readers' imaginations and help them get the most out of their efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Lets You Know What You're In For........2005-01-19

Reaching six sigma quality levels is not a simple tasks. Sure the results of improved quality levels are well known both in terms of increased customer satisfaction and overall lower costs. But six sigma ....

Both of these authors have a long history of working at the six sigma level. They've written this book not as a how-to, but as a report on their experiences in achieving six sigma.

First, it contains several reports of the "this is what we did and it worked," type along with some "this is what we did and it crashed."

Second this is a an alert to management to let them know what their committment has to be to enable a top-down alignment flow of understanding.

Because of their wide experience with six sigma, the authors know not only their own company (Raytheon) but have worked with other market leaders at companies such as GE, Delphy Automotive, Pratt and Whitney, Allied Signal and with consulting groups working in the quality area. They have talked with these other companies and report on some of the activities that have led them along the six sigma path.

This book can save a lot of heartaches in the implementation of working systems.

5 out of 5 stars An informative support guide for corporate managers.......2004-06-04

Knowledgeably and deftly written by David H. Treichler (Master Expert at Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems) with the assistance of Ronald D. Carmichael (Senior Manager for the Raytheon Company electronic Systems Group), The Six Sigma Path To Leadership: Observations From The Trenches is recommended as an informed and informative support guide for corporate managers seeking to improve company efficiencies, reduce errors, and increase bottom-line profits. Enhanced with a wealth of illustrative examples of what works and what doesn't, and showcasing lessons learned from hundreds of non-traditional applications and specific Six Sigma projects, The Six Sigma Path To Leadership is strongly recommended reading regardless of whether the reader is a novice to management or has worked their way up to senior level management positions of global responsibility.

            Book Description

This important book compares the growth achieved in Japan and Europe with the frustrated growth in the major societies of mainland Eurasia. More broadly, it is about the conflict in world history between economic growth and political greed. Eric Jones proposes two fundamentally new frameworks. One replaces industrial revolution or great discontinuity as the source of change and challenges the reader to accept early periods and non-western societies as vital to understanding the growth process. The second offers a new explanation in which tendencies for growth were omnipresent but were usually--though not always--suppressed. Finally, the erosion of these negative factors is discussed, explaining the rise of a world economy in which growth has recurred and East Asia takes a prominent place.
Eric Jones has written a substantial new introduction for this edition, which includes discussions of early evidence of growth episodes and the relation of these points to the Industrial Revolution, and the relevance of the East Asian "miracle" to his thesis.

Eirc L. Jones (autor of the much discusses book on The European Miracle, 1988) discusses world history from an economical perspective. By training he is an economist. The basic concepts are intensive economic growth (innovation) and extensive economic growth (more of the same). According the Jones extensive growth must develop into intensive growth at some point in time. You can only have so many workers or machines in your factory before it comes economically useless (law of deminishing returns). China during the Sung (or Song) dynasty (960 - 1279 AD or CE)experienced extensive growth and reached unprecedented levels of economic welfare, commercialisation (market economy) and consumerism. Industrial output of iron during the Sung period was not reached again until the late 18th century in Britain. But China never experienced a so called Industrial Revolutian like Britain or other Western European countries. Why not? This 'frustration' (according to Jones) is explained by referring to values (culture), institutions (law), state action, and military conquest. This is a thought provoking book, but recent research on China (Pomeranz and Bin Wong) dismiss Jones answers.

              Book Description

Although there are many books on the market about how to write effective marketing copy, there are very few specifically tailored to writing copy for the web, which is a totally different skill. Writing for the Internet presents many new problems, such as interactivity, shorter reading attention span, potential global audiences, and search engine robots. This is not just a book on met-tagging but on the range of copy skills required to ensure the website reaches its full potential.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point for Copywriters.......2006-02-17

Temple provides readers with an excellent format for learning to write web copy, especially if they have prior experience writing marketing copy for print media. Using his seven-day model, a copywriter could easily develop new content and marketing strategies for a personal or client website without becoming overwhelmed by "what do I do now?" Temple presents a simple, readable guide to writing copy without falling back on the condescending format of the "for Dummies" series. He has a tendency to be a bit too glib with his language, but that's probably unavoidable for someone with that many years in the marketing business. If you are interested in persuing a career in copywriting, or simply want to rewrite your personal page in a manner that beter markets you and your skills, I highly recommend adding this book to your library. It probably won't work as your only copywriting resource, as it lacks the depth of other texts, but it's certainly a good starting point and a handy tool.
