Superb sociological overview of Black entrepreneurship.......1998-10-24

I used this publication for a school paper on the history of black economic development, and it was really my most invaluable resource. Not only does Butler discuss black entrepreneurship throughout American history, but he also compares the experiences of African-Americans to other ethnic groups and explains why African-Americans have been so relatively unsuccessful because of a theory that he calls the "economic detour theory." Chock full of information, it is not only a historical account but a sociological study into the state of black economic development. It is highly recommended!

The first part describes basic toxicological concepts and methodologies used in aquatic toxicity testing, including the philosophies underlying testing strategies now required to meet and support regulatory standards. The second part of the book discusses various factors that affect transport, transformation, ultimate distribution, and accumulation of chemicals in the aquatic environment, along with the use of modelling to predict fate. The final section of the book reviews types of effects or endpoints evaluated in field studies and the use of structure-activity relationships in aquatic toxicology to predict biological activity and physio-chemical properties of a chemical. This section also contains an extensive background of environmental legilsation in the U.S. and within the European Community, and an introduction to hazard/risk assessment with case studies.

This textbook is literally a constructive piece of scientific genius. Rand is perhaps one of the most knowledgable and most well respected authorities on Aquatic Toxicology and its many subdisciplines.

After persuing through the first few chapters of this wonderfully written scientific text, one becomes very interested and more hungry for knowledge dealing with this subject. Unlike many other novels of this nature, this one is very unique in that it gives the read a clear and very indepth picture of Aquatic Toxicology and its impacts on the environment as a whole.

This text deals with aquatic toxicology from an environmental pollution aspect dealing with manmade and natural chemical toxicants. It also deals with the ecotoxicity affects of man-made pesticides when aquatic organisms are involved in the bioecologicall food-chain.

Malcom Hunter provides a wonderful resource for students. He brings years of experience in the academic world to create a useful and enjoyable text. His book provides broad coverage of the major topics of applied conservation including chapters on diversity, threats to biodiversity, the maintenance of biodiversity, and the human factors of conservation work. Throughout the text Dr. Hunter provides insightful illustrations and examples carefully spanning taxonomic lines and global location including several in depth case studies. This text accurately depicts the various complications and perspectives in this increasingly broad and necessary field. From the introduction through the last chapter Hunter keeps the text accessible only rarely becoming arduous to the reader's patience. Hunter leaves out the over glorified (and extremely costly) full glossy pictures that have become commonplace in modern texts making this a great buy for students. The discussion questions provided at the end of each chapter are great and his suggestions for other readings provide excellent options for students seeking to go even further into topics of interest.
