5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book on knowledge in organizations.......1999-02-12

This book offers a fresh perspective on knowledge in organizations. Clearly, the book was written for an academic audience and reflective practitioners, but if you take the time to read its core messages, you will think differently about the knowledge assets available to the firm.

      Book Description

Over the past decade, knowledge and learning have emerged as the keys to economic success and as a focus for thinking about organizational effectiveness and innovation. An overwhelming majority of large organizations now engage in a wide range of knowledge and learning activities and nearly all have programs and personnel explicitly dedicated to these tasks. The volume is targeted at those new to knowledge and learning, and is filled with practical examples and focuses on the most critical issues, featuring seminal contributions from leading authorities including: * Thomas Davenport, * Dorothy Leonard, * John Seely Brown, * Sidney Winter, * W. Chan Kim, * Peter Druckard. The book is organized around the three key steps in managing knowledge: development, retention, and transfer. These sections are preceded by a section creating the strategic context for knowledge and followed by a section on the social dimensions that are often overlooked. Finally, the book looks to the future of knowledge and learning. This Reader is an accessible way for executives and students taking advanced Management Studies and executive courses to learn from the latest examples on this topic.

        Book Description

In this book Haridimos Tsoukas, one of the most imaginative organization theorists of our time, examines the nature of knowledge in organizations, and how individuals and scholars approach the concept of knowledge. Tsoukas firstly looks at organizational knowledge and its embeddedness in social contexts and forms of life. He shows that knowledge is not just a collection of free floating representations of the world to be used at will, but an activity constitutive of the world. On the one hand the organization as an institutionalized system does produce regularities that can can be captured via propositional forms of knowledge. On the other, the organization as practice, as a lifeworld, or as an open-ended system produce stories, values, and shared traditions which can only be captured by narrative forms of knowledge. Secondly, Tsoukas looks at the issue of how individuals deal with the notion of complexity in organizations: Our inability to reduce the behaviour of complex organizations to their constituent parts. Drawing on concepts such as discourse, narrativity, and reflexivity, he adopts a hermeneutical approach to the issue. Finally Tsoukas examines the concept of meta-knowledge, and how we know what we know. Arguing that the underlying representationalist epistemology of much of mainstream management causes many problems, he advocates adopting a more discursive approach. He describes what such an epistemology might be, and illustrates it with examples from organization studies and strategic management. An ideal introduction to the thinking of a leading organizational theorist, this book will be essential reading for academics, researchers, and students of Knowledge Management, Organization Studies, Management Studies, Business Strategy, and Applied Epistemology.

            Book Description

Bruce Kogut's writing has sketched a theory of human motivation that sees managers as social, often altruistic, sometimes as selfish, who care about their colleagues and their status among them. For the first time this book collects together key pieces that show how this view works in application to practical managerial issues, such as technology transfer and licensing, joint ventures as options, and the diffusion of ideas and best practices in the world economy. In an extensive introduction to these chapters, Kogut grounds this view in recent work in neurosciences and behavioural experiments in human sociality. On this basis, he provides a critique of leading schools of thought in management, including the resource based view of the firm cognition, and experimental economics. He proposes that people are hardwired to learn social norms and to develop identities that conform to social categories. This foundation supports a concept of coordination among people that is inscribed in social communities. It is this concept that leads to a theory of the firm as derived from social knowledge and shared identities. Kogut argues that the resource based view of the firm is only a view and it fails as a theory because it lacks a behavioural foundation. If it were to choose one, the choice would be between knowledge and organizational economics. Similarly, he argues that recent statements regarding cognition do not confront the age-old question of shared templates. If it did, it too would have to confront a theory of social knowledge. The author then proposes that this foundation is essential to an understanding of norms and institutions as well. Thus, we are moving into a period in which rapid advances in neuroscience increasingly lead to an integrated foundation for the social sciences. This opening chapter is the gateway to the collected essays, which assemble the author's published articles on knowledge, options, and institutions. The book ends on the most recent work on open source software and generating rules. The chapter on open source discusses how new technology is changing the face of innovation. The final article on generating rules is the segue to the author's current work that looks at how simple rules of social exchange leads to complex patterns of local and global knowledge.

              Description:
The rising number of integrative (interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary) landscape research projects means that researchers spend an increasing portion of their professional career doing integrative work. The keen interest in integrative research concepts, however, has brought to the fore the many barriers experienced by researchers in the integration process. Nonetheless, and despite the importance of the subject, there are few empirical studies on conflicts and barriers to integration in the field of integrative landscape research. In this paper, we describe a study identifying the barriers to integration of disciplines and knowledge communities as expressed by participants in integrative landscape projects. To this end, we conducted 19 qualitative semi-structured interviews and a Web survey with a total of 235 respondents from 30 countries. A correlation-matrix revealed highly significant relations among the barriers identified from the interviews and the Web survey. We undertook a factor analysis, which resulted in three factors with an eigenvalue >1. We used independent variables to test which characteristics influence participants' perception of barriers. Our results show that participants perceive the greatest barriers to integration to be the additional time needed for integration, the difficulty of coping with different academic traditions and the lack of common terminology. Furthermore, conflicts arise from the geographical distance separating researchers working at different locations, the difficulty of agreeing on a common problem formulation and the fact that participants tend to start in projects at different points in time. Additional barriers relate to the academic merit system, publishing and the role of personal chemistry. We identified the three factors extracted from the factor analysis as 'interpersonal & organizational barriers', 'time demands & external barriers' and 'academic traditions & epistemological barriers'. The independent variables that had significant influence on these factors were project characteristics such as size, budget and duration, as well as whether a project was interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary. We conclude that larger projects, projects with higher budgets, projects with longer duration as well as transdisciplinary projects are more likely to face barriers to integration. We recommend future projects take account of the potential sources of conflicts from the outset and plan to minimize barriers to integration.

From the supplier: Business leaders are increasingly recognizing that knowledge is an important corporate asset in the same way that capital, technology, property and personnel are. Many are realizing that a company's knowledge capital can serve as a significant value-added advantage. The challenge facing CEOs is how to transform their companies into knowledge-based organizations. This issue was discussed during a roundtable discussion co-sponsored by Chief Executive magazine and Unisys Corp. Teleglobe CEO Charles Sirois suggested that business leaders shift their focus from the mechanical model of the organization to a biological model. Capital One Financial CEO Richard Fairbank recommends the recruitment of the smartest people. Other top executives who shared their views on knowledge-based enterprises were Solectron CEO Charles Dickenson, NovaCare CEO John Foster, Hanover Direct CEO Rakesh Kaul and Proffits CEO R. Brad Martin.

3 out of 5 stars Avoid for Web Development.......2000-01-18

Had this book not included "multimedia" in the title, I would have rated it lower. I bought the book to broaden ideas for Web design and found little substance. The book is a bit "dated": reference to common browsers included "Netscape" and "Mosaic". It was also very slanted toward a print media background. Even though it was about multimedia? Yes. One section highlighted two primary focuses of an effort: to inform; to teach. The Internet marries the print focus with automated processes (applications). Interactivity is not about choosing what to be told or what to display, but about being heard and making a difference.

Writing for Multimedia by Timothy Garrand Focal Press To a certain extent, you bought this magazine because of its attractive cover picture, right? But you probably won't hesitate to trash it if its content lacked substance. Likewise, an attractive Web site is merely ornamental if it is aesthetically pleasing but its information is in shambles. Mastery of information presentation is a key factor as the Internet gives people access to more information. Although the Internet has been making vast improvements visually, the big glaring gap is still content. Many sites are just electronic novels with either boring or ill-presented plots. Multimedia demands Sight, sound and action - all of which we are familiar with, but the combination of which forms the environment that the multimedia writer must structure his or her writing to. Multimedia writing walks a fine line between entertainment and information. Garrand sees it as a continuum with information and entertainment at extremes, and a multimedia writer's most important task is deciding where to sit. Failing which, the work would end up as either an over-simplistic piece or, on the other extreme, a terribly boring article. Who should read this? I remember a comic play I watched entitled Sheer Madness in which the audience, by way of questions, determined the outcome of the 'who-dun-it' murder-mystery. You can bet that the playwright anticipated every question an audience member might ask and wrote a script for that outcome (a total of eight branch plots). Writing for Multimedia by Timothy Garrand explores the demands that multimedia writers are under to fuse information with entertainment. Whether you are a web page designer, a writer/designer, or an educator keen to incorporate multimedia into your lessons, you have to cultivate a new approach to writing for a very demanding medium. The multimedia writer needs to be a scriptwriter, a radio broadcaster, and a print journalist all in one. Using a very effective show-and-tell format that highlights examples of interactive medium at its best, Writing for Multimedia taps the brains of top scriptwriters, web page designers and advertising executives for insights into creating compelling text that inform and entertain the viewer. Complementing the text information is the CD-ROM included with the book that contains movie clips, script samples, and demos for software and multimedia programs. And, more than just a theoretical approach to multimedia writing, Writing for Multimedia delves into specific case studies of uncovering the 'secret sauce' or 'X-factor' of certain multimedia CD ROMs and web sites that have made them a success. Although Garrand has a tendency to get over-technical, he balances his information well with good examples from the CD-ROM and a simple writing style. Writing for Multimedia is a great how-to guide for anyone interested in spicing up their web site or adding life to a presentation.
