UNO student .......2005-05-18

This book is pretty easy to follow, if you can follow simple algebraic graphs and logic (emphasize logic). I thought at first that maybe this book may have been easy, so I looked around on amazon and inferrred from what I read that all the micro books that are making big sales to universities are the same. By that I mean not to math intensive, just schedules, graphs, and definitions. I got an A in the class and feel like I definitely learned something. I recommend this book for those who want to learn on own also.

A good survey.......2003-10-26

'Foundations of Microeconomics' by Robin Bade and Michael Parkin is an interesting text for an introductory course in Microeconomics. The primary academic division at the beginning level of economics is the Micro/Macro-economic divide; often it is taught as a two-semester sequence for students going into economics, political science, history, business or any other such discipline that requires a thorough grounding in economic theory and principles.

Bade and Parkin are aware from decades of teaching experience that students often get lost in a sea of detail, and that many introductory economics texts (as do the introductory texts of many fields) attempt to do too much too quickly in introducing their subjects. Bade and Parkin organise each chapter, therefore, around only a few core principles - three or four at most. They have also built into this text a very extensive set of charts and diagrams to demonstrate the points that are being explained in the text.

Each chapter begins with a checklist, and ends with checkpoints (which follow on from section checkpoints along the way). Included in this is a featured called the 'Eye on...' feature - these are small articles that highlight practical, real life situations in which the principles under discussion apply. They may be domestic or international in scope, and may be current or significant in history.

The book is adaptable to many different uses - the introductory pages highlight four alternative means of focus that the book can take: a traditional micro-economics course approach; a public policy emphasis; a business emphasis; or a shorter policy emphasis. Each of these build on core principles in the early chapters, and then expand from there depending upon the primary interests of the class or reader.

The layout of the book is visually interesting and lively. The use of colour, photographs, and charts and graphs adds tremendously to the feel of the text. The text is sharp and concise, without sacrificing clarity or content.

One very important section that I wish would have more detail and emphasis is the appendix to chapter 1 - Making and Using Graphs. Interpreting and drawing graphs seems to be the single largest problem area for students I tutor in microeconomics, so more emphasis on this part would be appreciated, particularly as the skills given in this section carry throughout the entire book. As a primary tool, the relegation of this to an appendix sends somewhat of a mixed message of the importance of graphs. Perhaps renaming this as a chapter in its own right would help somewhat, with more detail and examples (much like in mathematics, it is in the repetition of the exercises that the students gain mastery of the concepts). Students are indeed called upon to do many exercises during the course of this text (learning by doing, rather than just through reading), but the early grounding in graphical representation is critical.

This is a softcover book.......2006-09-08

I was thinking about giving this a 2 star rating because they sent to me a softcover book instead of hardcover as described. However, Amazon's representative was very friendly and supportive so I decide to keep the item and give it a 4 star rating.

Did receive what was described.......2005-10-03

The description of the book stated that this title was the paperback version, which is what I needed. Instead I received a hard cover version that feels like toting a bowling ball!

Excellent for Self-Study (Distance Learning) Courses.......2003-11-24

I used this book for a distance learning course in the principles of macroeconomics (Econ 101) and it is by far the best introductory text in macroeconomics I have encountered. Bade and Parkin explain the theory and concepts very clearly and constantly use examples of a typical consumer or company to illustrate these concepts even though they are describing a macroeconomy. For those of you who have taken Principles of Microeconomics before Macro, this is a HUGE PLUS, and for those of you who are taking Macro before Micro, you will not feel a sense of disconnect when you begin microecon after this class. The authors do a fine job integrating areas of micro and macroecon and not make the two feel incompatible. What's more, they do not leave out crucial explanations to graphs, figures and equations so those who do not have a strong background in mathematics need not be intimidated. The graphs,figures and equations indeed supplement the narrative and sufficient examples are given so you can master the quantitative aspects of the course. Just don't take short cuts and do read the entire chapter and concepts will sink in like you wouldn't believe. This is the 3rd time in my life I have attempted a study of macroeconomics and my efforts have previously been held back because of texts that were too complex or theoretical. I am now pulling a strong A and this is because the text does a good job of lowering the entry barrier to learning economics without sacrificing academic rigor.

Fair - Not a stand-alone textbook.......2003-11-08

This textbook contained a lot of technical information but offered little connection to real-life macroeconomics. I love economics and feel that it is necessary to emphasize its everyday uses in order to motivate a student's learning.

Overpriced and without focus.......2006-02-16

Note that the book is EDITED by Elias G. Carayannis, and two of his colleagues, and that it is not entirely written by him. Only one of the chapters is written by Dr. Carayannis. Each chapter is written by a different author, so the book is more of a collection of writings and/or cases. If you are expecting a textbook that methodically discusses the components of Project Management, this is not the book for you. Some of the chapters have poor grammatical usage (See Ch. 4). Overall, it is a decent complementary PM book - not one that will provide definitions or basic concepts, but rather analysis and discussion on PM topics.

Poverty alleviation is a central aim of economic and social policy, and yet there is no consensus about what poverty means or how it is best measured. Often, the households below an income poverty line are counted as poor, but there may be no firm basis for concentrating on that particular income level. There may also be wide variations among the households below any income poverty line in terms of their actual living standards. This book explores what poverty means in developed countries, and shows that understanding and measuring it requires widening the focus beyond curent income. By using broader measures of resources and information on living patterns and concrete indicators of deprivation, it shows how those who are effectively excluded from participation in society due to a lack of resources can be more accurately identified, and the processes producing such exclusion better understood. The core issue of this book is how to define and measure poverty in relatively rich countries in a way which is valid, meaningful in the context, and valuable for policy-making. Extensive tables of data from a specially designed survey of a large representative sample of Irish households are used to illustrate this issue.

I have been in Call Center Management for over ten years and would have loved a book like this when I first entered the field. I purchased Call Centers Made Easy for a small library I keep in my office for fellow managers and phone reps interested in persuing a career in Call Centers. It quickly became the most sought after book on my wall.

Career tracking and development has always been my favorite part of managing Call Center teams and this book will prove invaluable to anyone who may be looking into Contact Centers as a career. Business owners considering opening a Contact Center would benefit from reading this as well because of the many chapters devoped to the initial ramp up of the technology, team building and even possible outsourcing of the center.

While a lot of the theory is fairly rudimentory this book provides an excellent foundation for the beginer in a field that is rapidly growing both here and abroad. There are plenty of volumes out there dealing with more specific disciplines within the Contact Center arena such as Forecasting, Resource Planning and the various technologies involved, but regardless of the area you want to become an expert in, Call Centers Made Easy will provide you with the necessary "big picture" thinking that will make you a success.

Excellent resource for those new to the world of Telcom and call centers. The author does an excellent job explaining technologies used in call centers in layman's terms. Any person without an ounce of telecom background could pick up this book and glide right through.

Call centers can be as small as a two-person reservations desk or a five-person customer service line. This tells how to build and budget for a call center to achieve goals and increase profits; from designing a customer service call center to using call center technology and software. Chapters are quite specific on how to build call center designs around business needs.
