Some basic information, but mostly and ad for Act!.......2007-01-28

I listened to this tape, hoping to get something new out of it. What I really got was annoyed. The frequent proselytizing about Act! was at once a major turn off and a distraction. If you have never read anything about time management then you may find something useful in the most basic sense. I, however, did not find anything new. Better choices would be "Getting Things Done" by David Allen and "Eat that Frog" by Brian Tracy.

Book should have a different title.......2005-12-16

I got this book at garage sale, and since it was only a dollar, I thought it was a really good buy. I was wrong.

This book really isn't about time management, and should be titled "Organization for Buisnessman for Dummies."

Most of the information was not very useful to me, and what was I had to adopt because it was written strictly from a buisnessman's perspective. For example, there is a part about cleaning out your breifcase; I can use some of that for tips on cleaning out my backpack, but in his writing he doesn't even hint that someone beyond a buisnessman would be reading this book.

Beyond that, the book really doesn't have much on time management at all. The whole first section is on getting your workplace clean and organized, the second section is on keeping your "Master List," which is really just a to-do list. (The great thing about that is he mentions using it in the first section when your cleaning things out, even though he has yet to explain it.) Apparently, all you need to do is be organized and time management will magically fall into place. Also, as other reviewers said, the end sections aren't even related. There is a section on planning your out-of-town travel and another one traveling abroad. These don't really effect my time management skills, and really don't belong in this book.

I'd recommend this book if you are a buisnessman in need to get organized. Other than that, skip it.

After researching Time Management skills for a recent seminar, I stumbled across this book. What a waste of time.... I just didn't find any consistent information that I would want to share with others regarding Time Management.

The author is too unclear about what he does recommend... and then he doesn't stick with the recommendations that he is clear with. He contradicts himself too much. Makes you wonder if anyone ever proofed the book BEFORE it went to press.

Also, this book is a bit old now .... but the subject is still relevant. I hope that a new T.M. for Dummies comes out again... but with a different author.

.... oh, and the only reason I gave this 2 stars was for the cheatsheet at the beginning of the book. The email & voice mail hints are basic and simple common sense...but there are some that never quite get those hints until they are pointed out to them.

All I can say is WOW! I got this book and was fairly skeptical that it would be all that people were saying it would be. I am definitely a convert. This book is CRITICAL to having great web positioning. I really don't see how a person could do it without it. Apparently there is another book coming out soon and I'm going to snap it up as soon as it gets off the press. This thing is chock full of details on how to get it done. And when I e-mailed with some questions, I got very prompt responses from John himself. He even gave me his phone # to call to get a more thorough description, and when I did, he spent plenty of time with me making sure I was on the right track. For a guy who has as many things going on as he does, I was really blown away. The man knows customer service and dedication to the people who buy his book. I purchased this book in September and since implementing the methods correctly, have increased my traffic 10 fold! The key is to have the common sense to implement the methods! I've heard of this book for a long time and finally made the decision to purchase it. I just wish I did it sooner. Well written and easy to follow. I bought the book and it contains NO useful information at all. If you are a beginner it doesn't get you started and as an expert don't even consider reading it. Additionally, the book is very expensive.

Great information for everyone!!!.......2005-06-15

This book is a great read! It lays out the rules for having credit cards and checking accounts that I wish I had when starting out with my personal finances. I finally found out how checks are used by banks and department stores. And I like the ways to protect myself from getting my personal information ripped off and my credit ruined. And the ways to get out of financial trouble if your in it are wonderful.

This book also has many ways to get free money in the form of grants for college and starting a business that I find useful. Many foundations and the government have a lot of money they give away every year. There is a lot of free money out there that I didn't even know about, like credit cards and special financing deals for cars and furniture.

I always thought that a budget was about counting pennies, but I was wrong. The way to create a budget in the book is easy and makes sense. And there is a lot of good information about easy investing for the future. I loved it!

Different (and very challenging) view of service excellence........1997-05-16

For businesspeople paying lip service to the "exceed expectations" and "thrill/wow/dazzle/delight" recipes for outstanding service, this will be a troubling read. First, Schaaf dismisses such ideas as "hot air." Then he builds a persuasive case around the idea that service is less a matter of the tactical things people do and more a matter of the strategic tradeoffs a business has to make in serving both the needs of the customer and the need to turn a profit.

What sets the book apart is its basis in real-world examples drawn from the same 101 companies Schaaf and Ron Zemke profiled and analyzed in the late '80s in "The Service Edge." Rather than create a new metaphor backed by a lot of aimless theory, Schaaf traces the practical things companies in his database have been doing in five basic areas: customer knowledge; balancing points of access (how and where they sell their goods and services) against market capacity; low-price against value-added strategies; providing service through people against the technology that increasingly replaces their efforts; and a provocative new idea he calls "customer empowerment."

The key piece is knowledge. If you don't know much about what your customer expects, he argues, it's easy to say you'll exceed expectations. In reality, once you know what your customers expect, you'll generally find you have to work like mad just to "meet" expectations. But without that in-depth knowledge, you have no way to devise workable strategies that will bring customers back again.

If you're comfortable with your basic assumptions about what customers will take for their dollar, you either won't like "Keeping the Edge" -- or you'll substantially change the way you approach the business of building an edge based on their satisfaction and loyalty.

With the disintegration of the Soviet Union new oil and gas sources have become available for the world. As energy supply will be one of the main problems of the coming millennium, the Caspian region (Russia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan) as one of the major global oil and gas sources will play a crucial role in this respect. Amineh's book is one of the few recent studies that deal with the developments in the Caspian region since the fall of the Soviet Union. It is an important book to the current struggle for the control of energy reserves in this region

By looking at political, economic, strategic, historical, social, and cultural aspects this book draws a complex picture of the competition on exploitation and transport of energy resources from the Caspian region. The author shows how this struggle takes place between various actors: the advanced industrialised countries (the United States and Western Europe), their backed Transnational Corporations and the regional powers Russia, Turkey, Iran, and also China and Pakistan.

According to the author, the developments in the post-Soviet Central Asia and Caucasus cannot be set apart from the current structure in the International Relations and International Political Economy characterised by international trade, the transnationalisation of production and finance, and the internationalisation of state activities. Through an increasing economic and cultural interdependence this process reduces the power and effectiveness of governments at the nation-state level. This manifests itself especially in the involvement of transnational corporations and transnational oil corporations through joint ventures for the exploitation and export of the Caspian energy resources, the most important ones being the Kazakhstan-Chevron joint venture known as Tengizchevroil and the Azerbaijan Offshore Oil Project. As world wide energy demand will rise in the coming millennium the question on who will gain control of energy resources will be a major topic. All countries involved in the region and also the Central Asian countries themselves aim to hinder Russia from regaining dominance in the region. Up till now Russia controls the only existing pipeline and has used this as a means of pressure against Central Asian countries. The discussion on the construction of possible alternative energy outlets is a crucial issue in this context. According to the book: '[t]he problem with pipeline politics is that it must combine often opposing economic and political interests'. The United States does not want Iran to become dominant in the region and therefore rejects any possible pipeline that would run through Iranian territory. Georgia hopes for a Western pipeline. As a transit country it could profit from tariff revenues. Regional conflicts such as the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, Chechnya, the PKK issue in Turkey and the Taliban rule in Afghanistan as well as the civil war in Tajikistan are mentioned as major obstacles to co-operation in the region especially concerning the pipeline issue. Chapter VIII discusses the problem of the various possible short-term and long-term pipelines. Several alliances have been built around the Caspian's energy resources. Whereas the United States support Turkey's involvement in the region as a reaction to the US-sanctions Iran seeks close ties to Russia, especially in the nuclear field. The author outlines the involvement and activities as well as the contradictions of the various interested actors in the region. Russia sees it as a natural given and historical fact to be active in the region, showing this especially in the military field through their financial support of the Central Asian armies. However Russia's activities are constrained by its own economic problems. It therefore has to keep friendly relations to the West for investment in Russia. Iran and Turkey refer to their historical and cultural links to the Central Asian region in connection to their activities there. Iran has own large energy resources and hopes to be able to develop its resources by expanding its infrastructure toward Central Asia. Also other Asian countries, especially China and Pakistan who see the Central Asian energy resources as a necessary precondition for their own economic development try to develop closer ties to the region. The author looks in detail looks at the energy resources and major oil and gas projects in the former Soviet republics in the Caspian region: Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan

However, the exploitation and export of the Caspian energy resources is also constrained by various aspects. The struggle for power between the ruling faction and the popular Islamic oriented Welfare Party (now Virtue Party) in Turkey, or between the more liberal faction around president Khatami and the traditionalists around Ayatollah Khamenei in Iran, are obstacles to the involvement of these countries in the region and make other investors cautious to co-operate with them. According to the author another obstacle to development are the internal factors of the Central Asian countries themselves. Ethnic conflicts, poor infrastructure and technology, lack of commercial and legal expertise cause problems to attract outside investments. Further, the legal regime dispute around the demarcation of the Caspian Sea has hindered a rapid exploitation of the Caspian energy resources. These and other aspects contribute to the difficulties around the exploitation and export of the Caspian energy resources.

The passages on the various oil fields and joint ventures in the Caspian region are a bit too long. However, this book has made a brilliant attempt to cover the various aspects of the complex problems around the Caspian energy resources and the countries involved. It is the best contribution to the scarce literature on the Caspian region since the fall of the Soviet Union. As an introductory book it is highly recommendable to all those who are interested in the current developments of the Caspian region.
