5 out of 5 stars Bi-polar Bear, look in the index!.......2005-05-06

I'm giving this book 5 stars just to even out a careless review. This is my first ever review, and I didn't even read this book, just wanted to sell it. However, if Bi-polar Bear had considered the book in it's proper context, as a projection of the future, not a description of the present, she would have used it as a view from the year 1992, predicting 1995 and beyond. Books from 2005 which describe the trends of 1995 and beyond are a dime a dozen.

Just look in the index, under "Shopping, future of: in-home, 213-5" and you will find accurate descriptions of present-day (1992) and future predictions: "More salespeople will not be a viable option. The increasing discrepancy between labor costs and product costs--brought on by ever-improving automation [or slave labor in Red China--reviewer's comment] in production--will leave stores no choice but to continue decreasing the quantity and quality of salespeople." Is that ever right! The chapter goes on with the heading "Electronic Shopping Without Promotion" and talks about independent consultants, like epinions.com, which probably didn't exist at the time.

This appears to be a semi-scholarly work, and like the title says, deals with "the way we shop & what we buy," not just the way we shop, i.e. stores versus internet. If you want advice about online shopping, there is probably a "for dummies" title. If you are interested in how our society is changing, and what people thought in 1992 of which way it would go, this may be the book you want. The moral of the story is, "look more carefully at a book you are reviewing."

1 out of 5 stars Way too out of date to be useful.......2005-03-14

I couldn't get through the first chapter of this book -- it was published in 1992, and there is no mention of the internet. I'm sure that, in its time, it was useful. This book is good for one thing in 2005 -- as a base for an altered book.

              Description:
Knowledge of the insect communities inhabiting different types of dead wood, and their responses to variation in its availability, is important in assessing the potential ecological impacts of changes in the quality and quantity of coarse woody debris (CWD) that may result from forest management activities. We collected all Diptera, Hymenoptera, and Coleoptera emerging from four decay classes of pine (Pinus strobus, P. resinosa, P. banksiana) logs collected from 22 sites within Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada, in order to analyze variation in community composition and trophic structure as a function of log decay class, and to determine whether the abundance of wood-inhabiting insects in the logs was correlated with the amount of downed CWD in the surrounding area. Multivariate analyses revealed that community composition varied continuously across the four decay classes, and that our system of decay classes explained decomposition-related variation in insect communities relatively well compared to individual characteristics of the logs. Of 27 families that were classified as ''common'' (present in >25% of the logs from at least one decay class), 19 were found to vary significantly in rank-abundance across decay classes, with nearly all of these favouring logs that were either in an early (class I) or late (classes III-IV) stage of decomposition. These associations also reflected functional differences in trophic guild structure: xylophages and predators tended to be most abundant in fresh logs, whereas saprophages, fungivores, predators, and parasitoids tended to be most abundant in more highly decayed logs. When the community was considered as a whole, insect abundance generally did not appear to correlate with the volume of downed CWD in the surrounding 20 or 79ha area, either within or across decay classes. When trophic guilds were considered separately though, we found that the average rank-abundance of fungivores was correlated with the surrounding volume of downed CWD. We conclude that wood-inhabiting insect biodiversity, and its associated ecological functions, may best be maintained through forest management practices that do not reduce overall amounts of CWD, and that ensure it is available in both early and late stages of decomposition.

                  Book Description

Motoo Kimura, as founder of the neutral theory, is uniquely placed to write this book. He first proposed the theory in 1968 to explain the unexpectedly high rate of evolutionary change and very large amount of intraspecific variability at the molecular level that had been uncovered by new techniques in molecular biology. The theory - which asserts that the great majority of evolutionary changes at the molecular level are caused not by Darwinian selection but by random drift of selectively neutral mutants - has caused controversy ever since. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of this subject and the author synthesises a wealth of material - ranging from a historical perspective, through recent molecular discoveries, to sophisticated mathematical arguments - all presented in a most lucid manner.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever on molecular evolution.......2005-11-08

Kimura's contribution to the area of molecular evolution is unparalleled in this field. This book is a true classic that still has high relevance nowdays and it is continuosly cited in the research literature. The mathematical elegance of this theory is breathtaking, and any student comtemplating a research life in molecular evolution must read it.

2 out of 5 stars Kimura and "Natural" Mathematics.......2005-06-16

"Natural" mathematics is the idea that mathematical formulations are inherently prone to paradox. Therefore, added to them--although not in an internally consistent manner--must be the idea that mathematical formulations are human perception.

This inherently faulty position was taken by mathematicians at the turn of the century in order to avoid the "paradoxes" of Cantorian set theory. However, Garciadiego has shown (in BERTRAND RUSSELL AND THE ORIGINS OF THE SET-THEORETIC 'PARADOXES') that the "paradoxes" of set theory were not paradoxes at all--they were meaningless formulations, or simply labels for concepts which had never existed (such as the Burali-Forti "paradox").

This line of mathematical historical research has exposed the flaws of "natural" mathematics. It is well known that Kimura was deficient in mathematical tools when it came time to express his ideas. So he turned to the mathematics of Malecot. Unfortunately, Malecot's mentor was Emile Borel, one of the first mathematicians to develop "natural" mathematics in response to the set-theoretic "paradoxes."

Kimura's neutral theory used to be regarded as the dernier mot in avant garde biological theory. However, it almost certainly is faulty, containing the same flaw as "natural" mathematics. To see how this is so, translate Richard's contradiction (recounted on pp. 141-142 of Garciadiego) into Kimura's theoretical formulation. You will see that it suffers--in its own terms of art--from the flaw Richard saw in his own contradiction (and pointed out in a letter to Poincare). The problem in Richard is that "the collection G had meaning only if the set E was defined in totality; this could not be done except with infinitely many words."

It is very likely that Kimura's notion of "population" plays the same role in the neutral theory, that set E plays in Richard's contradiction, and this identification invalidates the neutral theory. In addition, it is likely that the word "population" is used identically in Darwin, and open to the same objection as set E. This is because "natural" mathematics is an idea with deep historical roots: it has been the response to paradox since ancient times. However, it is almost certainly true that there are no internally consistent paradoxes; they are simply meaningless formulations.

Thus, this book has historical interest, but no internal consistency.

                  Book Description

One of this century's leading evolutionary biologists, Motoo Kimura revolutionized the field with his random drift theory of molecular evolution—the neutral theory—and his groundbreaking theoretical work in population genetics. This volume collects 57 of Kimura's most important papers and covers forty years of his diverse and original contributions to our understanding of how genetic variation affects evolutionary change.

Kimura's neutral theory, first presented in 1968, challenged the notion that natural selection was the sole directive force in evolution. Arguing that mutations and random drift account for variations at the level of DNA and amino acids, Kimura advanced a theory of evolutionary change that was strongly challenged at first and that eventually earned the respect and interest of evolutionary biologists throughout the world. This volume includes the seminal papers on the neutral theory, as well as many others that cover such topics as population structure, variable selection intensity, the genetics of quantitative characters, inbreeding systems, and reversibility of changes by random drift.

Background essays by Naoyuki Takahata examine Kimura's work in relation to its effects and recent developments in each area.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great collection........1999-12-01

My only regret is that I had entered the field of evolutionary biology too late to have met Kimura. Although the neutral theory has perhaps had the most ranging effect, I would rather place his work with diffusion models as his most important contribution. This collection puts together the beautiful diffusion papers written by Kimura on the subjects of fixation probability, quantitative genetics and more -- including the hard-to-get work in Applied Probability! One of the most valued books in my collection.

Alexander and Lyons have outlined a strategy for service organizations to shift (their) historical models of selling that will place any organzation ahead of customer demand and expectations. An awesome transformation will take place for the company that applies "the Knowledge-based" blueprints to actually create demand and stop the wasteful "reactionary sales methods" that are most common today. Great Resource!

                                      Book Description

In this innovative work, Guglielmo Carchedi argues that only an analysis centered on class as the basic unit of social life, with production and distribution of value understood as the bedrock of the economy, can throw light on the internal contradictions of European economic integration. Two specific themes emerge from this radical approach. First, familiar topics such as competition and social policy, economic and monetary union, the Common Agricultural Policy and immigration, are treated in an original manner. Second, subjects usually ignored in the standard textbooks, for instance the role of interest groups in the Union's decision-making process, are shown to be of crucial importance in understanding the economics of the European Union. This work therefore provides both an introduction to and a critique of the European project. The book's central message however, is that another sort of Europe is possible, one based on the erosion of economic polarization, on the abolition of Europe's imperialist relations with the Third World, and on the creation of truly democratic institutions of self-determination.

                                        Book Description

`Developing countries are again, as in the early days of UNCTAD, becoming a major focus in the discussion of world trade reforms. Their sense that the Uruguay Round and the WTO system failed to address their concerns is a major factor behind the current problems in mounting a new multilateral round. This book addresses the key concerns of developing countries and suggests a number of reforms that will enable them to become equal partners in the world trading system.'

                                        - Peter J. Lloyd, University of Melbourne, Australia

Experience suggests that trade liberalization has contributed substantially to the remarkable growth of industrialized countries. However, for various reasons many developing countries have not yet been able to integrate successfully into global markets and reap the growth-inducing and poverty-reducing benefits of trade. This book argues that while developing countries are heavily represented in the WTO - accounting for about four-fifths of its membership - there is still plenty of scope for the world trading system to work more effectively in their interests.

The book examines the achievements of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in reforming the world trading system and the challenges to future reforms. It begins with an overview of the genesis of the world trading system and moves on to examine the key issues as they relate to developing countries. These include: further liberalization of agricultural trade; abolition of the Multifibre Arrangement; environmental and labor standards; competition policy; regional integration in South East Asia; and the implications for developing Asian countries of the liberalization of the Chinese economy and its WTO membership. Furthermore, the book discusses the links between trade liberalization and poverty reduction - drawing on the experience of Asian countries - and puts forward arguments on how trade liberalization could effect a greater reduction in poverty.

This is a timely and succinct presentation of the critical issues relating to the world trading system in the context of developing countries in general, and Asia-Pacific countries in particular. It will interest and inform a wide readership including scholars and students of development and international economics, and practitioners and policymakers concerned with international trade issues and global trade relations.

                                          Book Description

This book describes the trade negotiations known as the Uruguay Round which took place in the context of the GATT and which led to the establishment of the World Trade Organization at the end of 1994. The book contains a brief summary of the history of the negotiations and GATT rules in each case, but focuses more on the results of the negotiations themselves. It contains up to date information on advances in the trade field since the Round in such areas as telecoms and information technology. It discusses the main issues the WTO will have to confront in the future. The book seeks to maintain a readable style throughout and to simplify as much as possible the complexities of the international trading system, while at the same time remaining informative.
