    Book Description

Despite its claims to global scope and relevance, International Political Economy as a field of study remains entrenched in a narrow set of theoretical, conceptual and empirical foundations derived from the experiences of the advanced industrialized democracies. Bringing together specially commissioned chapters by leading authorities in each key area of debate, Globalizing Political Economy provides a systematic examination and critique of contemporary IPE, and puts forward a new agenda for a truly "global" political economy.

    Product Description

"There have been many writings on geopolitical forces—how nations interact in the pursuit of power. Less has been written on geoeconomics forces—how national economies interact in the pursuit of economic gain. . . . It is to Sheth and Sisodia's credit that they offer a penetrating analysis on where the future of different countries is going under the pressure of geoeconomic forces." —From the Foreword by Philip K. Kotler, S.C. Johnson Distinguished Professor of International Marketing, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University While the world is still coming to grips with the implications of globalization, Tectonic Shift investigates what the globe’s economic and geopolitical future looks like and discovers the unfolding of an unprecedented realignment of forces. Based on extensive study and analysis, the authors of this compelling book argue that regionalization will replace the much celebrated globalization, characterized by extensive North-South integration between developed and developing nations. Authors Jagdish N. Sheth and Rajendra S. Sisodia describe how the world is evolving into three huge economic and political unions, which will take shape by 2020, and predict that: The EU will expand both eastward as well as to the south, right up to Southern Africa The Asian block, initially led by Japan and then by China, will encompass a united Korea, ASEAN, Australia, and New Zealand and create a vast free trade area by approximately 2015. The US and Latin American nations will revive the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and will be joined by the UK. South Asia will have its own free trade area, which will eventually ally with the FTAA Sheth and Sisodia argue that these evolving, strategic partnerships will involve free trade, monetary union, cross-border infrastructure investments, regional development agencies, and conflict resolution mechanisms. They also discuss the key steps that each region will have to take to be successful, and how it can overcome obstacles to change. Handled properly, the authors further argue, this evolution will result in faster and broader economic development coupled with diminished conflict among nations.

1 out of 5 stars A Dogma of two Idealists.......2007-04-02

If you are going to read this book, I recommend you to do so with a grain of salt. This prophetical novel by Jagdish Sheth and Rajendra S Sisodia is highly dogmatic, and because of that, many of his assertion made are groundless and illogical. The authors fail to look beyond the economical relations among countries and underestimate the political and historical tensions among them. For example, they hypothesize that all of Middle East will eventually unify and enter the EU block, but they fail to adequately explain how exactly the political/religious tensions among these ME countries are going to settle. They also make similar assertion regarding the unification of Asia block as well, but they too again fail to explain how the political/cultural tensions among these countries are going to settle. But these two are not all. Sheth and Sisodia make many other groundless arguments regarding many issues. They either forcefully tried to make sense of their theory or really believe in some irrational ideaology that economical relationship cures foreign tensions among countries. If you are truely interested and in reading this book, I recommend you to also touch upon "Globalization and Its Discontents" by Joseph Stiglitz, and most importantly, to read with criticallity and caution.

      Book Description

This volume explores one important feature of the new global politics--the emerging role of regional systems of relations. The contributors concentrate on key questions: What constitutes a region? How is the historical process of region-formation developing? What are the roles of main state and non-state actors involved? What are the future prospects? The book examines 11 different regions that are coming into existence in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa to show how regionalization is an uneven developing, heterogeneous, and multi-dimensional phenomenon.

        Book Description

Is economic nationalism an outdated phenomenon in light of globalization? Economic Nationalism in a Globalizing World demonstrates the enduring, and even heightened, economic significance of national identities and nationalism in the current age. The volume's contributors, pioneers in the reinterpretation of economic nationalism, explore diverse ways in which national identities and nationalism continue to shape contemporary economic policies and processes.

The authors examine the question in a range of geographical contexts and issues: European Union food politics, competitiveness strategies in New Zealand, East Asian development strategies, Japanese liberalization, monetary politics in Quebec and Germany, and post-Soviet economic reforms. Together, the cases explore the policy breadth of nationalism. It is not just a "protectionist" ideology but is in fact associated with a wide variety of economic policies, including support for economic liberalization and globalization.

            Book Description

This book evaluates the claim that in order to explore the changing social foundations of global power relations today, we need to include in our analysis an understanding of global civil society, particularly if we also wish to raise ethical questions about the changing political and institutional practices of transnational governance. br br The authors engage directly with the notion of global civil society in order to examines the ethical, social, and political conditions that make certain kinds of globalizing practices a reality today. They explore and utilize the normative dimensions of the civil discourse to further debate about the meaning of citizenship in a world of multi-level governance, as well as the changing characteristics of political community and democracy. br br Bridging the normative concerns of political theorists with the historical and institutional focus of scholars of international relations and international political economy, this book will be of broad interest to students and researchers concerned with international relations, civil society, global governance and ethics.

                              Book Description

What do biologists study when they study "life" today? Drawing on tools from rhetoric and poststructuralist theory, the author argues that the ascent of molecular biology, with its emphasis on molecules such as DNA rather than organisms, was enabled by crucial rhetorical "softwares." Metaphors such as the genetic "code" made possible a transformation of the very concept of life, a transformation that often casts organisms as information systems.

With careful readings of key texts from the history of molecular biology—such as those of Erwin Schrödinger, George Gamow, Jacques Monod, and François Jacob—the author maps out the complex relations between the practices of rhetoric and the technoscientific triumphs they accompanied, triumphs that bolstered a "postvital" biology that increasingly elides and questions the boundary between organisms and machines.

There have been many popular books, and a few academic ones, on the Human Genome Initiatives. On Beyond Living is a genealogy of these initiatives, a map of how we have come to equate human beings with "information." Melding contemporary theory with scientific discourse, it is certain to provoke discussion (and controversy) in the fields of cultural studies, theory, and science with its penetrating inquiries into the relations between rhetoric and technoscience.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Read, Relevant Advice on Competing in Today's World.......2002-04-04

A great book on ways to "change your game" in today's highly competitive environment. Loved the way that this book is written as an easy to read novel, following the story of Sharon, a former high performing sales executive, who suddenly finds that the methods she has been using for years to sell her company's products, no longer serve her. Sharon learns that she must learn to develop great relationships with her clients at all levels of the customer's organization. She must be relentless in researching the customer, regarding their goals, challenges, and existing products, in order to develop "win-win" business solutions that create a differential advantage vs. her competition.

It is obvious that Doug Peterson has considerable experience himself in helping others to create competitive advantage! Great Read!!

As a salespereson reading Going For The Green, the book takes you along a path of discovery and self analysis. Creating compelling business solutions and differentiating yourself and your organization is critical in selling today. Unlike most books about selling, Doug Petersen takes you on a real-as-life journey to sell the message that top performing salespeople must think stategically. The golf allegory helps bring meaning to the concepts outlined in the book and executive summaries at the end of each chapter serve as great reinforcement. A must read for salespeople who think they've mastered the sales process!

Here's a great textbook that reads like a novel, and brings the professional selling experience into today's business environment. Even experienced sales people will benefit immensely from this easy reading journey paralleling the sales process and the game of golf. Readers will learn to be great playing partners, both on the links and in their corporate life. I've been selling for many years, and this book taught me a few new wrinkles. You'll not only be more successful, but you'll get to smell the flowers along the way.

                                        Book Description

This volume offers a systematic account of the effects of globalization on the shipping industry and seafarers' lives. The seafarers' labor market is changing rapidly and this study discusses the challenges encountered in recruitment practices, trade unions, and collective bargaining, as well as training, certification, and fraudulent certification. Wages, contracts, and tours of duty are also investigated, and the book includes in-depth treatment of seafarer safety and hazard exposure.

Innovations such as automated engine rooms and the global maritime distress and safety system, the internationalization of ship registrations, multinational crewing and reductions in crewing levels, and the rise in ship management companies have had a profound effect on seafarers' living and working conditions. This perceptive book examines these and future issues for regulation and enforcement.

                                            Book Description

This paper focuses on the options on trade issues faced by the countries of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group as they negotiate with the European Union (EU) on a framework for future ACP-EU co-operation. It builds on the extensive analysis of ACP-EU trade and aid co-operation in Commonwealth Secretariat Economic Paper 32. The main topics are: pressures on the Lome arrangements; economic effects of free trade areas proposed by the EU; pointers from the EU’s trade agreement with Morocco and its negotiation with South Africa; the feasibility of enhancements of the EU’s Generalized System of Preferences; a way ahead for the ACP countries in negotiation.
