        Book Description

By showing how and why human nature is what it is, evolutionary theory can help us see better what we need to do to improve the human condition. Following evolutionary theory to its logical conclusion, Death, Hope and Sex uses life history theory and attachment theory to construct a model of human nature in which critical features are understood in terms of the development of alternative reproductive strategies contingent on environmental risk and uncertainty. James Chisholm examines the implications of this model for perspectives on concerns associated with human reproduction, including teen pregnancy, and young male violence. He thus develops new approaches for thorny issues such as the nature-nurture and mind-body dichotomies. Bridging the gap between the social and biological sciences, this far-reaching volume will be a source of inspiration, debate and discussion for all those interested in the evolution of human nature and the potential for an evolutionary humanism.

Chisholm unites issues that rarely meet under one cover: attachment theory, reproductive strategies and evolutionary theory. The first chapter lays out the basis of evolutionary humanism. This chapter will interest many though it remains debatable whether Chisholm's arguments refute the naturalistic fallacy, as he contends. The second chapter on evolution and development provides a fantastic link between the intergenerational concerns of population geneticists and phenotypic focus of developmentalists. Remaining chapters investigate the role of attachment theory in influencing an individual's later reproductive strategy and, intertwining with attachment style, the influence of risk and uncertainty in shaping male and female reproductive strategies. Throughout, he explores the implication of his contention that, "the ultimate function of life is reproduction--that value itself originates in reproductive (fitness, continuance), not health, wealth, or happiness--evolutionary theory specifies the target at which we should aim," and more.

5 out of 5 stars Step by Step Guide to Buying & Selling on the Internet.......2000-05-31

Online Auctions is a well-researched book, full of examples and illustrations.

It is a great "how to" book for the beginning online auction entrepreneur. It guides you step by step, from start to finish, whether you are the buyer or the seller.

I found it very informative from the seller's point of view because I've never sold anything online. It provides excellent tips on how to word your ad. It expressed how the timing of your ad can make or break your auction. I wouldn't have given this much thought but I now know the start time/end time and day of the week start time/end time are critical.

Online Auctions also pointed out that catergorizing your items might make a difference on the number of bids and the amount of the bids you receive.

This book stressed the importance of researching buyers and sellers, how to do it and why.

Online Auctions spelled out the process to attach a picture to your auction. I didn't realize it was such an ordeal.

This book also introduced me to the ins and outs of dutch auctions. I hadn't heard of these before reading this book.

Online Auctions-The Internet Guide for Bargain Hunters and Collectors is a must for someone who has not been involved in the online auction world but would like to be.

              Book Description

Interest rate swaps--used globally by both corporate finance departments and investment firms to control interest payments, manage debt, and enhance investment portfolios--constitute a growing 1.9 trillion market. Now, financial personnel, swap traders, corporate treasurers, and professional cash managers can turn to this clear, authoritative guide to master all the methodologies used in the international swap market. Written for anyone whose work is touched by swap market activity, the guide uses diagramming techniques to first explain what swaps are, and how and why they are traded. It then addresses more sophisticated financial transactions, such as rate setting, analysis of swap desks, market-to-market, speculating, and financial statements. Readers will find detailed coverage of more than two dozen derivative products, including spreadlocks, swaptions, caps, and flows, and learn how swap trading works in foreign currencies and interest rates. Critical light is also shed on questions regulators are currently raising about the security and future of the swaps markets.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Me thinks some reviewers protest too much.......2004-07-11

This book has been damned for being too simplistic, therefore consign it to the trash cart, or so we are expected to do. But given the relative novelty of these financial products simplicity in the best sense of word could be seen as a virtue in any work dealing with this topic. So, why the evident annoyance from some. Could it be that this work dissolves some of the mystery involved, and threatens some closed shop in these markets ?

1 out of 5 stars Outdated and Shallow.......1999-09-02

The book easily shows its age in its focus on standards and issues which have long ago fallen by the wayside in this dynamic market. Far worse is that the book is preciously short on quantitative and analytic methods, and long on third-grade-teacher types of admonishments. I read the whole book becasue I paid for it, there are better, more up-to-date volumes out there. Could possibly be re-named "Swaps for English Majors", although, English majors as a group might correctly be upset at this association.

While developments in this industry move very fast, this book remains one of my favourites for covering the basics of structured derivatives.

On such a topic, it is very easy to get carried away with complex mathematics and jargon, but this author handles the task very well. Topics such as quantifying risk, measuring swap valuations and understanding complex options are explained in a way most of us will understand.

This book is not for the beginner, but is more aimed at those with an average or above average understanding of derivatives.

                          Book Description

This volume presents a scholarly insider's perspective on the Asian economic crisis, examining the social, economic and political consequences of the crisis in six influential Asian economies: Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. Each chapter contains an analysis of the events leading up to and during the crisis, the social impacts and an assessment of possible futures for these countries. The contributors' expertise and use of up to date data ensures an integrated approach by which the process of economic change can be understood.

The book reveals that professional workers in the urban financial sector, as well as manual laborers in the export sector, felt the most dramatic effects. Impacts on the latter group resulted in a significant rise in the population living below the poverty line. The book emphasizes the previous absence of strong social security `nets' and the need to strengthen macroeconomic policies and institutional, legal, regulatory and supervisory structures. Other topics covered include intractable government corruption and fiscal management.

The Social Impact of the Asian Financial Crisis has a unique perspective that will ensure greater understanding of the causes and consequences of the crisis in six major economies and as such will appeal to academics, researchers and policymakers involved in Asian politics and development economics.

From the supplier: The profound effect and ramifications of the East Asian financial crisis have received inordinate media attention yet its impact on the smaller market economies in the region, such as the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and Cambodia, has largely been ignored. Cambodia and Lao PDR are East Asia's poorest nations. Social indicators in these market economies are poor and poverty rates are high. Their vulnerability to the serious external shocks brought on by the Asian financial turbulence had been mounting in the period leading up to the crisis. The experience of these two countries underscore the importance of sound macroeconomic management. While both are taking steps to address underlying structural problems in their economies, they will have to initiate more efforts if they wish to return to the more rapid expansion of the period prior to the Asian crisis.

                              Book Description

In today's globalized international system, international and regional organizations can only function effectively within the context of a larger social partnership with governments, the private sectors, and a plethora of increasingly influential interest groups.
Regionalism Versus Multilateralism seeks to illustrate these new roles by tracing the way the Organization of American States (OAS), the oldest regional organization, has pursued its objectives in the context of evolving hemispheric and international circumstances. It analyzes the impact of these circumstances on the operations, programs and activities of the Organization, and the adjustments and direction which `metamorphosed' the regional membership at certain crucial junctures of hemispheric and international evolution.
The book does so in three parts: through an historic examination of the objectives of the Organization; a critical analysis of its response over time to the forces of growth, transformation and change; and the projection of what continuing developments might dictate on the future characteristics of the Organization if it is to respond effectively to the needs and aspirations of member states.
This book is a collaboration between Christopher R. Thomas and Julian T. Magloire, with both parties contributing equally to its content and preparation.
