How Imperialists' Forefathers Robbed South Africa.......2005-10-28

"Restriction of land ownership on a racial basis shall be ended and all the land redivided amongst those who work it... That state shall help the peasants... Freedom of movement shall be guaranteed...All shall have the right to occupy land... People shall not be robbed of their cattle, and forced labor and farm prisons shall be abolished."

These are excerpts from the Freedom Charter of the South African National Congress, which led the revolution against apartheid to victory in the 1990s. Was it supported by the leaders of the "Free World", the U.S. and U.K., who are now waging war in Iraq and Afghanistan for "democracy"? Not on your life. They supported and profited from the apartheid system. Learn how forefathers of today's imperialists took the land of South Africa by force and unspeakable terrorist violence against the masses of South Africa.

An excellent look at apartheid policy.......2005-08-29

Written before the overthrow of apartheid in 1990, this 69-page booklet nonetheless provides an essential collection of facts describing an important method that the minority government used to maintain its rule.

Practically from the time they set foot in what has become South Africa, white settlers from Europe laid out plans to disenfranchise blacks from their land. Through a series of wars, laws and theft, the descendants of Dutch and British settlers managed to disposses blacks and appropriate 87 percent of the land for themselves.

The great land theft was as vital to sustaining apartheid as was cheap black labor in the nation's gold and diamond mines and other industries. But from the beginning, blacks resisted white claims on their land, which became codified in the Freedom Charter of the African National Congress. Its leader, Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned for his fight against apartheid, became the first president of free South Africa in 1994.

Harsch's pamphlet is based on two articles he wrote in the Dec. 16, 1985 and Dec. 30, 1985 issues of the newsweekly Intercontinental Press. He describes the social inequalities of apartheid land system, and the fight to eradicate them.

Black farmers were turned into sharecroppers, land tenants and peasants on land that they had farmed communally for centuries before the arrival of the white settlers.

When they were given some land, it was often the least arable and only in small plots. White farmers benefited from government loans and assistance, while blacks were left on their own.

White farmers often preferred to hire black women in the fields because the lack of child care meant they also benefited from the labor of their children, Harsch reports. Beatings and punishment of blacks were common.

The apartheid masters created 10 Bantusans, so-called national homelands for blacks. But they were a cruel joke. In the Ciskei homeland, Harsch writes, dry land conditions managed to feed very few people. "Just 27,000 of the 375,000 rural Ciskeians have enough land to enable them to also keep cattle. Nearly a third of the Ciskei's people have no land at all," according to Harsch. "In the Ciskei, 40 percent of the population is unemployed, and 89 percent of the children suffer from malnutrition." This, in one of Africa's richest countries.

Convincing case for land-reform .......2005-07-29

Important changes have occurred in South Africa since the struggle against apartheid succeeded in bringing down that hated system and putting Nelson Mandela at the head of a new nation. This little book was written before this transformation but it documents the urgency of one of the central remaining tasks. What must now be completed is "seizing the land from the dispossessor," as one of Mandela's close comrades put it. In other words a radical land reform that would open the land to those whose ancestors were forcibly driven from it. Why is the question of land ownership so important in South Africa today? This book explains how the central pillar of apartheid was the expulsion of native farmers from their land. Many did not even have a concept of private ownership, they simply farmed it in common. As Harsch points out, 87% of land became restricted only to whites. The author explains in a very readable way how land-theft was at the very center of the steps that marginalized the Black toilers. A fight for land-reform is necessary in order to build a worker-farmer alliance, the author cogently argues In so doing he affirms one of the chief demands contained in the freedom charter of Mandela's African National Congress-"the land must be shared among those who work it." Steve Clark's introduction helps to link Harsch's book to other valuable readings.

As the Publisher & Executive Editor of AboutBizz Magazine and www.AboutBizz.com, I am slightly hesitant to share my experience and disappointment with everything James maduk...only slightly. So without going into a "let's bash Maduk," I will share with you my experiences with his products.

I ordered some products off of James Maduk's website. I eventually would up joining his membership site. If you plan on purchasing the "52 Secrets" book, you can get it as part of your monthly membership. BUT here's where you will start to experience the disappointment and frustration.

Maduk publishes most of his books in a PDF format...I should say he publishes the OUTLINE of his book in PDF. In order to really get the content you paid for, you must be online where the audio/whiteboard presentation is streamed to your computer. While a novel idea, it seriously restricts your ability to really use the information unless your online.

Once you own one of the Maduk products, the problems start...
1) The audio portion of the information is horrendous. The sound quality is either too loud and distorted or too low. It's extremely frustrating to turn the volume up and down constantly. However, be prepared for the unprofessional quality of his recording -- you'll hear children screaming and playing in the background (his wife operates a child care in their home, and apparently Maduk stays holed up in the basement).

2) As a PDF, he has links to click so you can hear the audio or see the whiteboard chapter of the book. I personally have called and talked to Mr. Maduk on at least 3 occasions to let him know the links are broken, so consequently the hyperlink DOESN'T WORK!!! I have spoken to Maduk about this and have heard all kinds of excuses why it's happening and a promise to fix it. The are dozens of links that DON'T WORK or are out of date. I think the most inconsiderate thing about this is in order to reach Maduk, it's a long distance call to Canada. He doesn't answer emails, so if you are expecting some type of customer service...forget it.

3) This is a professional gripe I have with Maduk. He professes to be a "broadcaster." Well I spent 10 years in radio broadcasting myself in positions ranging from disc jockey, to program director, to sales manager and even applied to own a radio station. One thing I learned early in radio was "if you're not funny, don't try to be...you just come across silly or stupid (or both.) The second thing I learned was prepare and sound professional. Use correct grammar, don't stutter or stammer...in other words make it easy for people to listen to you. Maduk comes across as an uneducated know-it-all. He poo-poo's all the other successful Internet marketers with language that literally embarrasses me. He also has plenty of misspelled words, of which with all the spell check tools available, there really is no excuse for sloppy spelling.

4) His attempt at white board presentations get a "A" for the idea -- yet an "F" for presentation. He's constantly dropping part of the board (gee that part could be edited out by a professional) and most of what he writes on the board is unnecessary He appears to only write fluff words on the board to make you feel you're getting some information of real value.

Now you may be asking, "what did you like if anything?" Well, I think some of his information is a good primer for people trying to learn about the business of Internet marketing....with this caveat...it's only his opinions you must steer clear of. He charges a good amount of money for very sloppily compiled courses/books and has no real interest in putting out a QUALITY product. Instead he's only trying to sell you -- he's only interested in making a buck.

WRAP-UP: I have to say two more things about Maduks products, first is save your money. It's not worth the selling price unless you join his membership site (not worth it for longer than 1 month). Second is an observation...Mr. Maduk...maybe you should add a 53rd secret...call you Mum and ask her about real customer service and satisfaction. She could teach you a few more things about how to take honest care of your customers.

a very interesting work.......2004-08-09

This work is still very vital as a work of analysis. Although some of the situations that were current during the writing of this book have changed quite a bit, the general analysis and much of the information and quotes provided are highly relevant. Ramonet brings some intriguing ideas to debates on globalization and the role of the state and his work on the problems of groups reverting to occult and nationalist dogmas, the politics of fear in the face of a so-called modernity that works against their interests... Ramonet keenly psychologizes the patters of oppressed peoples seeking strength in taking out aggressions on other oppressed peoples, since the centers of power are so far away, and the powerful able to manipulate opinion and information in many areas to achieve such a result. Ramonet confronts the question, throughout this work, what is the role of the state in these times and how can a concerned populus move beyond the false security of antiquated ideologies to actually take back some sovereignty? It's a brave work... though there are some downfalls...
For one, the translation was obviously quick as there are numerous annoying mistakes and gaps... and there is little in the way of actual citation. And while I recognize some of the material cited, it is very annoying and opens the book up to calls of credibility that such important citations are missing.
Ramonet's newer work in translation is much better and suffers from none of these flaws.

Outstanding single source to help establish export policy........1998-12-24

Exporting is potentially a complex subject. Export Savvy, keeps it simple, easy to understand and as an extra feature, this book is an excellent reference. For the executive, this is an outstanding single source "fast read"; a key aid to help establish export policies and strategy. For export, import, compliance and international business development managers, Export Strategy is a great refresher and reference. For the college professor involved in international management/marketing classes this could be an excellent text with obvious inherent opportunities to assign "let's look into this further" student research projects. This is a well done body of information presented in an inviting journalistic style.

An essential tool to have when doing international business........1998-11-30

If your company is in international trade, international business, or exports, this book will give you and your staff the tools and common language for developing strategy and running your operation. I would recommend giving each person on your team a copy of this book.
