    Book Description

The book investigates the interplay of brand equity and technological assets at the corporate level. In a grounded theory approach it develops a model of how companies in technology intensive industries can improve the appropriation of the returns of their intangible technological assets with the help of brand equity and thus improve their competitiveness. The theoretical discussions are supported by two extensive case studies on Bayer Aspirin and Cisco Systems as well as an extensive econometric analysis. The developed model points out how the strategic relevance of immaterial technological assets and brand equity develop along the technology-life-cycle and indicates how companies can, by an integrated technology and brand equity management, appropriate the returns of their initial technological advantage in the long-run. The implications of the findings for business companies as well as researchers are clearly revealed.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not what you might expect.......2001-10-03

The title was changed to make the book more appealing - was originally going to be 'Knowledge Management' or similar.

The book is really an attempt to justify corporations spending money on knowledge management. However it does not have much useful or practical information on managing knowledge.

He describes the problem pretty well but there is not enough on solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Overdue Insights -- a call for Management Action!.......1998-06-23

This book is a wake-up call to management to re-assess the value of staff, and to ensure that this value is fully captured. It contains practical advice on how to capture and learn from past experience. Wall Street should be valueing companies on the basis of the companies ability to learn from its past.

                        Book Description

Andrew A. Michta examines the security of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary in the aftermath of the 1989 collapse of communism and the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. He reviews the old geopolitical dilemmas in the region as well as the new conditions in Europe as it approaches the remainder of the decade, and offers a country-by-country discussion of security policies and military reforms underway in the region. The analysis is set against a background discussion of the region's history as well as a review of the key events leading to the disintegration of the Warsaw Treaty Organization, including the reformulation of Soviet security policy in the late 1980s. Michta concludes with an assessment of security challenges facing "the Triangle" states of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary as they work to join Western Europe by the end of the decade. He argues that the Triangle will remain in a "gray security zone" in Europe for the foreseeable future, with an implicit security commitment from NATO, but without explicit formal security guarantees.

                                  Book Description

Providing a new picture of the socio-economic map of central Europe after several years of transformation, and focusing in particular on Poland, this book gives an account of the major problems of regional restructuring. The author identifies the opportunities and problems faced by particular regions by relating the Polish experience to the experience of other central European countries. This in turn provides a general picture of spatial patterns of transformation in this specific part of Europe and will interest those concerned with the transformation of Eastern Europe.

                                              Book Description

Where brands have traditionally been associated with individual product lines, the authors assert that the concept of the brand needs to both reflect and be carried by the whole organization. Today, customer value is created in a context of long term partnerships formed to achieve customized solutions, process reengineering, risk sharing, and supply chain optimization.

                                              Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Marketing discovers BPR very late.......2000-10-25

The key thrust behind the authors work is that business models developed for the old economy do not work in the new. Unsurprisingly, they propose that organisations look at their own inherent processes to the way they deliver customer value and make sure that they are aligned with what customer's want.

This viewpoint could be interesting in a book about Business Process Reengineering as it rarely applied to marketing but as a stand alone work it has few merits. The book is very academic in the language used and there are few 'real' world examples or explanations given.

If you are a college student interested in seeing how BPR developed in the early 90's then this book may be worth a read.

If you are hoping to gain insight in how organisation actually compete on customer value then I would strongly suggest you look elsewhere

Taiwan in Troubled Times is concerned with Taiwan's politics and its relations with China following the election of Chen Shui-bian as President in March 2000. This event created problems between Taiwan and China and led to political gridlock in Taiwan. The Chen Administration is evaluated in this book. So is President Chen's party, which evolved as an opposition party and is now in power but is unaccustomed to the role.
