5 out of 5 stars More than an academic perspective.......2001-11-18

I'm an American based in Japan and working all over Asia. I found this book to be an outstanding analysis of the relationships between Americans and their foreign colleagues or customers.

It's written from a business perspective more so than an academic perspective. Although the style is a bit heavy, I still found many of the anecdotes entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars real-life examples of diversity in globalized business.......2000-05-28

In the past four years, I have used Intercultural Communication in the Global Workplace with over 500 community college students interested in cultural differences from a business perspective. This book provides a useful structure for thinking and talking about both the theoretical foundations of global diversity as well as the practical implications of working cross culturally - - whether from a desk in the USA or traveling and working abroad. The book is well-organized and includes thoughtfully selected, real-life examples of cultural differences (which I, as an overseas expatriate of 20 years can verify). The real value of the book is in these multiple examples which give readers a sense of the rich diversity of our globalized world and the importance of encountering business people from other cultures (both within the USA and abroad) with an awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural priorities. The case study in the chapter on negotiations with other cultures is particularly well-conceived and useful.

Gardenswartz, Rowe, Martin, and Dingh hit it well with this one. All of these powerful writers and trainers bring their energy and experience to the page with this must-have for interculturalists and diversity trainers, domestic or international. With a strong goal of helping trainers tap personal, interpersonal, and organizational aspects of diversity and change, this book is a wonderful tool filled with powerful and practical exercises and tools for training and working with groups.

Written very practically and conversationally, it is as if the authors are sitting with you as they discuss their tools. And included with the book is a CD ROM with activities from each chapter in multiple formats for your use. I highly recommend this book and am pleased to have it on my desk.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting views.......2006-12-15

This is mostly about common sense, but it does provide some clever insight into today's multinationals and it's worth for anyone interested in how our different cultures can work together in one organization, and perform at their best. The authors start from an interesting premise, that is "you can never completely understand a culture that is not yours / or that you haven't been living in".

3 out of 5 stars A Solid Read!.......2004-04-30

Some of the challenges of managing global teams are obvious. For example, team members will probably speak different languages and come from different cultures. So how do you function in the Tower of Babel? Authors Michael J. Marquardt and Lisa Horvath recommend designating a common language, usually English for American companies. On the other hand, some of the challenges global team managers confront are not so obvious. For instance, what reward system do you use when everyone values different things? Can you just give everyone a pat on the back and a bonus, or must you individualize feedback mechanisms? What etiquette do you follow if everyone has a different sense of what is polite? If these issues haven't occurred to you already, you need this book. If they have, well, We still suggests this rundown on the very basics. As you may have guessed, all the issues you have already confronted with international employees get magnified with global teams.

5 out of 5 stars First book to show the real power of global teams!.......2001-11-10

Presents the key challenges facing global teams with specific recommendations and case studies on how to overcome those challenges.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Treatment of What's Known.......2001-10-16

Marquardt and Horvath have done a very competent job bringing together good practices for people and organizations working in different places and cultures. Examples from Pfizer and other global corporations make the clear, simply written prose real to the reader, whether a newcomer to this interesting and pertinent field or someone who, like me, has seen a lot of the literature and done a lot of this work already. For my taste, I would have preferred to see more about technology, but the coverage was good and comprehensive enough to whet the appetite or confirm in business language what the practitioner would need to say to a business leader or a manager who was having trouble or starting out. The layout of the book is pleasant. What did worry me about the work, which I still rate highly, is suspicion that the research and scholarship were not up to a high standard, e.g., the consistently incorrect citation of the 1994 classic in the field "Globalwork" by Mary O'Hara-Devereaux and Robert Johansen, from which many of the authors' points are drawn, and an index that was generally wrong in its pagination.

            Book Description

According to available estimates, only .3% of the total fresh water is usable for the world's entire human and animal populations. Some experts have observed that in the near future, the earth will face severe scarcity of water, resulting in an insufficient amount of water to sustain our ever increasing future needs. Others believe that such pessimistic estimates are unwarranted. Due to conflicting opinions and data-interpretations, the future levels of scarcity are difficult to accurately forecast. One fact, however, is above controversy: water resources are not evenly distributed. The world's 38 poorest countries are located near areas that lack ample water supplies. Even some areas, which seem to possess sufficient supplies, suffer zonal or regional shortages. In recent years there has been an increasing realization not only of the importance of water as a key factor for sustainable development, but also the impending strategies for water in the near future. The chapters in this collection examine this critical resource and the policies being pursued to meet the challenge of decreasing access to usable water by selected countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. A major study for students, researchers, and policymakers involved with environmental and development issues.

                  Description:
We empirically study and model how socio-demographic variables, attitudes and beliefs towards Internet shopping affect both the adoption decision and usage of the online shopping channel. Previous research on online shopping focuses on whether to adopt online shopping. This paper extends this research by delineating non-adopting individuals into non-browsing and browsing. Our results demonstrate that there is a fundamental behavioural difference between three forms of behaviour: that is, those that purchase online, those that browse online but then purchase in-store and those that do not shop online at all.

                          Book Description

This IDC study analyzes the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ regional market for residential Internet access market, covering the period from 2004-2008, and a review of 1H03, 2H03, and 1H04 periods, based on the Asia/Pacific Semiannual Fixed Line Services Tracker data. It covers the key markets of Australia, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Market sizing and forecasts are provided for dial-up and broadband services, in terms of both subscribers and revenue.

"The Internet access market aimed at the residential sector continues to enjoy strong growth throughout the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) region, and is expected to keep growing throughout the forecast period," said Claudio Checchia, research manager, Asia/Pacific Consumer Devices and Services. "While the number of dial-up subscribers continue to increase in the still developing markets, broadband access services have enjoyed tremendous growth across the region. The PRC continues to lead in terms of overall number of residential subscribers, while Korea and Hong Kong are leading the market in terms of competition and penetration."
