5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2000-03-31

Includes not only the classical knapsack problems such as binary, bounded, unbounded or binary multiple, but also less familiar problems such as subset-sum and change-making. The text fully develops an algorithmic approach without losing mathematical rigor. Great for Researchers, Professors and Students in Computer Science and Mathematics. .

    Book Description

This book provides a full-scale presentation of all methods and techniques available for the solution of the Knapsack problem. This most basic combinatorial optimization problem appears explicitly or as a subproblem in a wide range of optimization models with backgrounds such diverse as cutting and packing, finance, logistics or general integer programming. This monograph spans the range from a comprehensive introduction of classical algorithmic methods to the unified presentation of the most recent and advanced results in this area many of them originating from the authors. The chapters dealing with particular versions and extensions of the Knapsack problem are self-contained to a high degree and provide a valuable source of reference for researchers. Due to its simple structure, the Knapsack problem is an ideal model for introducing solution techniques to students of computer science, mathematics and economics. The first three chapters give an in-depth treatment of several basic techniques, making the book also suitable as underlying literature for courses in combinatorial optimization and approximation.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A500263. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis proposes new methods, based on dynamic programming, for solving certain single-stage and multi-stage integer stochastic knapsack problems. These problems model stochastic portfolio optimization problems (SPOPs) which assume deterministic unit weight, and normally distributed unit return with known mean and variance for each item type. Given an initial wealth, the objective is to select a portfolio that maximizes the probability of achieving or exceeding a specified final return threshold; the multi-stage problem allows revisions of the portfolio at regular time intervals. An exact method is developed to solve a single-stage SPOP with independence of returns among item types. For a problem from the literature with 11 item types, this method obtains an optimal solution in a fraction of a second on a laptop computer. An approximation method, based on discretization of possible wealth values, is developed to solve a multi-stage SPOP with inter- and intra-stage independence of returns among item types. Running on a desktop computer, this approximation method solves a 3-stage problem with 6 item types in under 12 minutes. With finer discretization in a 3-stage problem with 8 item types, the solution time is about 46 minutes.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A216243. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: An instance of the geometric knapsack problem occurs in air lift loading where a set of cargo must be chosen to pack in a given fleet of aircraft. This paper demonstrates a new heuristic to solve this problem in a reasonable amount of time with a higher quality solution then previously reported in literature. We also report a new tabu search heuristic to solve geometric knapsack problems. We then employ our novel heuristics in a Master and slave relationship, where the knapsack heuristic selects a set of cargo and the packing heuristic determines if that set is feasible. The search incorporates learning mechanisms that react to cycles and thus is robust over a large set of problem sizes. The new knapsack and packing heuristics compare favorably with the best reported efforts in the literature. Additionally, we show the JAVA language to be an effective language for implementing the heuristics. The search is then used in a real world problem of determining how much cargo can be packed with a given fleet of aircraft.

                Description:
We describe a simple adaptive memory search method for the 0/1 Multidemand Multidimensional Knapsack Problem (0/1 MDMKP). The search balances the level of infeasibility against the quality of the solution, and uses a simple dynamic tabu search mechanism. A weighting scheme to balance out the differences in the tightness of the constraints is also implemented. Computational results on a portfolio of test problems taken from the literature are reported, showing very favorable results, both in terms of solution quality and the ability of the search to find feasible solutions.

                  Description:
The subject of this paper is the formulation and solution of a variation of the classical binary knapsack problem. The variation that is addressed is termed the ''fixed-charge knapsack problem'', in which sub-sets of variables (activities) are associated with fixed costs. These costs may represent certain set-ups and/or preparations required for the associated sub-set of activities to be scheduled. Several potential real-world applications as well as problem extensions/generalizations are discussed. The efficient solution of the problem is facilitated by a standard branch-and-bound algorithm based on (1) a non-iterative, polynomial algorithm to solve the LP relaxation, (2) various heuristic procedures to obtain good candidate solutions by adjusting the LP solution, and (3) powerful rules to peg the variables. Computational experience shows that the suggested branch-and-bound algorithm shows excellent potential in the solution of a wide variety of large fixed-charge knapsack problems.

                    Description:
Quadratic knapsack problem (QKP) has a central role in integer and combinatorial optimization, while efficient algorithms to general QKPs are currently very limited. We present an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) approach for solving convex QKPs where variables may take any integer value and all coefficients are real numbers. We approximate the function value using (a) continuous quadratic programming relaxation (CQPR), and (b) the integral parts of the solutions to CQPR. We propose a new heuristic which adaptively fixes the variables according to the solution of CQPR. We report computational results for QKPs with up to 200 integer variables. Our numerical results illustrate that the new heuristic produces high-quality solutions to large-scale QKPs fast and robustly.

I don't think any book could accurately depict owning any type of business this on appears to give excellent insight into the specifics of the pizza shop. A must read for anyone considering a food business.

This was exactly what we were looking for in our search for more information on the Pizza and Italian restaurant business. This was for research first, and we hope to put Mr. Powell's advice and experience to use one day soon. No other books out there like it. Well written and researched.

4 out of 5 stars "informative and interesting--a little rushed".......2003-03-11

Let me start by saying I enjoyed reading this book a great deal. A lot of information concerning mixers, ovens, and other topics were covered. Too much repetition, as well as too much focus on statistics of the big companies was a downer. As a pizza affectionado and person looking into the pizza business I would have liked a little more advise for beginners. I got the same vibes as the reviewer from illinois, the author could have done a better job. All in all, this is a great introductory book. I think Tracy Powell should re-write this book from a whole different point of view: From the conception of a small pizza shop to the grand opening/first $1.00. I guess some of us are either dumber or more afraid of taking the plunge into entrepreneurship. Sometimes it just takes a little push!

A lot of information for starting a pizza parlor for me and my wife. There's more in Powell's book than we could get anywhere else dealing with pizza or even a restaurant wanting to start serving pizza. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The three dimensions of communication.......2006-01-27

In the past companies could succeed based on how well they were able to produce and sell goods. Now, we are moving from the Production Century to the Customer Century, in which success depends on how well a company is able to satisfy its customers. To satisfy customers, companies must integrate marketing and communications throughout the organization.

According to the author, marketing and communications should be integrated along three dimensions.

                                  1. Integrated external communication: this is the process of involving everyone in the company in communication with customers and shareholders.
                                  · Identify the most profitable customers and track their buying behavior.
                                  · Use data to concentrate on improving market share among your best customers.
                                  · Address customer complaints immediately.

                                  2. Integrated vertical communication: this is the process of creating forthright, two-way communication between senior management, middle management and other employees.
                                  · Create a company vision based on the company's core competencies.
                                  · Use the vision to coordinate effort and communication from the top-down and the bottom-up.
                                  · Use the vision to direct employee training towards business goals.

                                  3. Integrated horizontal communication: this is the process of opening up communication among work units, departments and countries.
                                  · Use customer needs as the core beginning to developing effective teamwork practices.
                                  · Facilitate "virtual communities of practice" across the organization to benefit from networking among employees.
                                  · Rotate employees systematically through job assignments to facilitate understanding between work units.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas from world-class companies.......2000-12-26

I work as a consultant for a PR agency, so I'm supposed to know what is "best practice" in the realm of communications. This book compiles real-world examples from a dozen European and U.S.-based companies that seem to be getting it right: FedEx, Hewlett-Packard, GM Saturn, ABB, and others.

My principal interest in the book was in finding a source of good ideas that I can adapt for use by clients, and I was not disappointed. Anyone in a communications role, whether in-house or outsourced, can benefit by taking some of these ideas and adapting them to the particular needs of their own organization.

The book is especially helpful in getting around a dilemma frequently faced by consultants (internal or external) who are called upon to produce so-called creative ideas, i.e., if you propose something that's really provocative and different---outside the box, as they say---the first thing your client often wants to know is, "Where has this worked before?" Of course, if what you've proposed is truly creative and original, it may not have been tried before---a perfect reason for the client to shoot it down.

By drawing liberally from the ideas set forth in this book, you can come up with good creative PR and internal communications programs that have actually been put into practice by well-known companies. For example, when Saturn had to recall some of its cars to fix a defect, it basically turned the event into a party: car owners were invited to a Thai barbecue while mechanics spent 30 minutes fixing their Saturns. They even got a free car wash to boot. This example is a perfect illustration of a basic truth of PR, i.e., that crisis communications is not simply about damage control. Handled properly, a crisis can be an opportunity to get your customer to see your brand in a whole new light.

Another nice feature of the book is that much of it focuses on internal communication. Gronstedt uses a three-part model (he's a former academic, so he likes models, but don't worry: there's only one, and his writing is lively and clear) to describe communications, and one part consists of External relations, including media relations. But the other two parts are Vertical and Horizontal communications, both of which take place within the organization ("vertical" referring to communications that go up and down the chain of command and "horizontal" meaning communications that cut across different functions or business groups). This emphasis on internal communications gives an enlightened perspective that gets away from the one-way, press agentry model of PR that relies predominantly on placing stories about your company in the newspaper.

So read the book, mark the ideas and best practices of these world-class companies, and then adapt them for your own use. It's a great resource for anyone responsible for organizational communications.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating insights and useful framework.......2000-03-23

This is the most comprehensive book I've come across on how to strategically managing communications at every point of contact with customer and stakeholders. Gronstedt has written a practical book that provides fascinating insights into the inner workings of companies like Saturn, HP and FedEx. The examples are woven together into a "3D" model of integrated communications, which is a very useful framework for analyzing organizational communications. I'm really looking forward to sharing this book with my the communication classes at the University of Iowa.

This book sets the stage for the new economy from a customer perspective, in a more clear and complelling way than anything else Ive read. It provides a whole new way of looking at business. Its a real treasure trove of inspiring ideas and captivating stories from the front lines of integrated communications and supports many concepts I have found useful in my own international consulting. Ill definitely be referring back to it time and time again.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A business classic.......2000-03-22

The Customer Century provides managers an important lesson- without a process for integrating communications, companies simply cannot flourish in the new millenium! I'm thoroughly impressed with the readability and endless practical examples in the book. They are as applicable to business here in France as elsewhere. Gronstedt provides a roadmap that is easy to read and aesy to follow. I'm sure this will be a business classic.

This was the first book that I have read on metrics. Not that I'm a complete newb to them, but it is an entry-level view at them. Multiple times this book references Kaplan/Norton's The Balanced Scorecard which I am currently going through right now for more meat and potatoes on the subject.

This is a nice quick read for a quick start.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid and Detailed Performance Measurement Guide .......2006-09-15

The author makes a number of important points in this book. There is an emphasis on the few key measures that matter, linked to strategy and stakeholder needs. As to their characteristics, he recommends metrics that provide a view of the past, present and future. While it is relatively easy to develop metrics with a focus on the past or present, developing future oriented metrics is a little more difficult. Unfortunately no generally applicable guideline seems to exist.

One very good aspect of "Keeping Score" is the presence of summaries at the end of each of the chapters of part 2, telling you how successful organisations measure performance in the areas of finance, quality, suppliers, customer satisfaction, processes/operations and employee satisfaction. Whether or not you currently have a system in place, you're likely to find more than a few useful ideas here.

I've read all of Mark Graham Brown's books and been through a couple of his workshops. He always nails the topic and this book is no exception.

This book shows you how to pinpoint key measures, evaluate your measurement approach, and redesign inadequate metrics. I find it a very useful guide for my executive coaching and consulting practice.

                                  Substantially Unsubstantial

Keeping Score is a good high-level review of the importance of metrics in strategy-driven organizations. Brown employs Kaplan & Norton's balanced scorecard methodology to illustrate the relationship between measurement and strategy. He doesn't really deliver much more than you would find in Kaplan & Norton's classic Balanced Scorecard book. I would like to have seen more suggested metrics around the various "themes": financial performance, customer satisfaction, product/service quality, process and operation performance, supplier performance, and employee satisfaction. I know macro- and micro-metrics are organization-specific; however, there are "generic" financial and satisfaction metrics he could offer. The Measurement System Self-Assessment 50 -item survey illustrated in the book is a great resource. It can easily be customized, automated and administered to stakeholders responsible for developing measurement systems. I applaud Brown for consistently reinforcing the formative rather than purely summative evaluation model. That is, any measurement system must contain historical (lagging), current, and forecasting (leading) measures. Those systems that are driven by summative data (i.e., historical) do not serve the real purpose of a measurement system, which is to allow stakeholders to make well-informed and better business decisions. Oftentimes, Brown downplays the complexity of developing and implementing a measurement system. He makes statements such as "Measurement is easy" and "Designing your own new and improved measurement system may not be a much work as you think..." These kinds of statements are worrisome and misleading because developing a robust measurement system aligned with organizational strategy is no simple feat. Nor, should it be. One extremely important area that is only slightly addressed is that of system maintenance and integrating the system into business processes. Once a measurement system has been established clear guidelines should be established as to how the data will be employed and used to make decisions. A truly strategic organization will incorporate the measurement system into the daily operations of the organization.

I ordered Mark Graham Brown's "Keeping Score" just as I got involved with a Balanced Scorecard implementation. As we worked through the process of designing our internal scorecard I found this slim volume ( <200 pages) an invaluable aid. From the introduction through to the last chapter, I found this book full of practical ideas and advice. For instance, one of my personal pet peeves is the short shrift most larger companies give to the value of their people. In chapter 10: "Measuring Employee Satisfaction", Mr. Brown addresses topics such as the short-sightedness of improving profits through downsizing and how a balanced scorecard can help underline this mistake. He ends the book with a practical 10 item list "The Key To Successful Plans". After all the theory, I was glad to have a roadmap handy. I'd recommend this book to anybody who is contemplating a new scorecard, or rehabbing an existing one.

4 out of 5 stars The Global Trap.......2004-01-17

I've read this book when it first was published in Poland five years ago. The first thought that came to my mind was: How the hell could I have been so blind not to see what is going on in the world? There is no need to write about this book. You just have to read it! The question is: What can we do not to go to the 20:80 formula? And can we still do anything?

5 out of 5 stars A preview of things to come?.......2000-10-30

Although this book was written in 1995-1996, it is worrying that events that happened since were correctly predicted by the authors. A bit depressing, as another reviewer remarked, but the signs are there. "Globalisation and fragmentation", as it is put in the book. As a professional couple, we will probably find a place amongst the 20% employed - for as long as the corporate masters need us anyway - should we be willing to follow the new corporate slogan of "if you are awake, you are at work". And as someone who grew up in the so-called "third world", I have seen a few sides of the argument. I would describe the book as "sane" rather than "left-wing". One really has to put into question the value of "democracy" as persued by the Americans and others, on behalf of the large corporations. How much power do central governments really have these days? Thoroughly researched, well written, and informative. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Globalization as ideological apparatus.......1999-04-11

A thought-provoking insight into the negative repercussions of the phenomenon of globalization, this book debunks quite a few taken-for-granted assumptions about the relationship between the globlization of financial markets and socio-economic welfare. The argument that the various forms that globalization is taking have destabilizing effects on social relationships runs throughout the book, somehow urging the reader thereby to pause at sseveral points in the reading process to re-examine his/her coneptions about globalization and economic growth. The convivial tone in which the the authors make their forceful pronouncements on the subject at hand is highly appreciated; one indeed feels that the authors sort of seek to establish some kind of complicity against the forces of control and domination (no wonder the book was reprinted nine times in Germany and was translated into many languages). It also does so by demystifying the ostensibly neutral developmental aims of corporate business. The socioeconomic havocs that have been wreaked in the name of globalization find ample room in this cogently argued book. A good reference book this is. M. Karimi, Ph.D

4 out of 5 stars An excellent look behind the myth of capitalism........1998-12-27

This book should be on the shelves of every college library across the globe. It is clearly written and easily understood and gives the reader a good insight into the many myths and contradictions that surround our capitalist economic system. It not only criticize's the system, but also points out what can be done to incorporate a more socially just monetary path for future generations WITHIN the present system. One point that I feel bound to make, the book could be viewed as being a little depressing, and may leave the reader feeling somewhat helpless when faced with the seemingly impossible task of trying to change things, so it is important to read the book to the end. Take a break, then draw your conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars To tell the truth of the world economic realities and more.......1998-04-25

I have always been dissatisfied with the argument of the present mainstream economics that the free flow of products, know-how and investment will improve the well-being of all our people, including economically disadvantaged populations within our respective countries. On the contrary, the global gigantic investors' blind pursuits of monetary profits have already forced the respective countries to go through the disintegration of the society, collapsing of their own policy-making system, destruction of their sustainable environment, devastating the ground for rational discussion on the direction in which they should go. If you are one of those who feel disgusted at the mainstream economics' disguise like that, this book will turn out to be the greatest relief. This book goes beyond a mere presentation of a possible catastrophe of the world's economic system and build up the moral justification of this discussion. Its development of theories are based on so irrefutable and irrefragable evidences that can't be resisted. I have read the Korean version of this book but the implication of it is always clear : "Don't leave the human society's precious values at the hands of economic lust."
