Book Description
Based entirely on original research, What's Your Corporate IQ? is the first of its kind to describe the interrelationships between corporate strategy, CEO attributes, leadership, values, and ethics.
In What's Your Corporate IQ?, Jim Underwood presents the results of a breakthrough study of 15 global competitors and determined that high-corporate-IQ companies consistently ranked among the top performers of their industries. Likewise, low-IQ companies ranked at the bottom of their industries. Just what is corporate IQ? Underwood describes it as the interrelationship between a firm's strategy, organization, character, and competitors.
In a reader-friendly style, Underwood profiles the high IQs of the ""ten smartest companies in America."" Underwood states that organizations using a clear-cut ""people philosophy""-one that focuses on the long-term success of its people-strengthens a company's overall foundation. While taking a humorous look at some of the self-defeating practices managers employ to sabotage themselves, he uses the situations to point out that leaders who commit to good strategy have definite advantages over their competition, and statistics confirm that reality. What's Your Corporate IQ? outlines:
* The 17 corporate attributes that drive corporate success.
* The foundation for corporate success-three rules of leadership and strategy.
* The power of significance building-an employee's basic desire to be recognized.
* Fifteen self-defeating habits of highly ineffective leaders.
* Measuring success on performance, not by financial quarters.
* Organization entrepreneurial support systems.
* Company character-values, people, ethics, and sustainability.
* Why initiatives for change fail or succeed on implementation.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for managers, graduates and career changers.......2004-10-07
Thank you Jim Underwood for writing this book. This is a much needed piece of literature in the business strategy section and is a must read for all managers who aspire to lead - not only the people within their firm, but also within their industry. This book provides a logical way to understand and evaluate a firm, an industry and its associated competitive environment
I would also highly recommend this book to business graduates and anyone who is looking to change to another firm or industry. After spending seven years in a Wall Street investment bank and recently changing to a different firm within the financial industry, I am certain that I now work for a smart company. Jim Underwood's description of what a smart company looks like is exactly on key. The people I work with are satisfied, they are valued and they stay for decades. They also make a lot of money for the firm.
In his narrative, Jim Underwood uses case studies from many firms that you may or may not have heard of. His strategic model defines 17 attributes that underpin corporate success provide a roadmap to implement the concepts outlined and discussed within each case study. While other firms cling to "core values", Jim Underwood challenges the reader to embrace the idea of change. He not only validates his strategic model through numerous case examples and studies, he also tells the reader how to ascertain the level of change and complexity that their firm must match. The "one size fits all" strategy or "mission statement" approach really does not work and simply breaks down under this paradigm.
In addition to the basics of change, Jim Underwood also focuses on another area that is often ignored in the business literature of strategy and is, more often than not, thought of as a human resources issue. This is the area of ethics. All one has to do is read the daily financial press to understand how a lack of ethics can hobble a firm. Jim Underwood folds this topic beautifully into ongoing corporate strategy.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and plan on loaning my marked up copy to friends and colleagues.
How to Know You are Working for the Right Company.......2004-09-12
While reading Dr. Underwood's Understanding Your Corporate IQ, it gives one the ability to measure if you are working for the right company. There were several discussions throughout the book to help the reader make these determinations:
- Discussions about companies that last for more than 100 years
- Different ways to measure the internal forces of a firm
- Easy-to-understand analysis of complex business theories
- How to measure the "Character" of a company
- Real-world examples to clarify each chapter's concepts
For me, the book comes at the right time. With managers and workers struggling with terrorism and outsourcing demands, how do we measure ourselves to make sure that we (as managers and workers) are making the right choices?
Of special interest to this reviewer, there was an entire chapter devoted to the character of a company. Management theory often discusses how corporate culture can affect a company. Rarely, if ever, does a management book explain the various components of corporate culture.
For me, a small business owner and IT manager, knowing how to measure a company is critical because: "If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it." Your Corporate IQ gives you a way to measure your firm.
When you consider how Dr. Underwood's Corporate IQ fits with the explanations and analysis of the Mary Kay Cosmetics firm in More Than a Pink Cadillac, the reader walks away with a blueprint on how to run a successful company and how to potentially turnaround a failing one.

Book Description
Hong Kong's vibrant economic environment attracts business from all over the world. This new study examines topics that interest and touch every key economic sector from the business community to government. What are Hong Kong's strong suits as an economic centre and what are its weak areas? How do certain sectors measure up against other within Hong Kong and their counterparts in other places in the world? Why should a multinational business locate here rather than in Singapore or Tokyo? Is Hong Kong making full use of the resources which constitute its competitive advantage? The Hong Kong Advantage applies the Harvard Business School method for measuring economic competitiveness through an examination of selected industries and key issues, and is the first major economic review of this kind for Hong Kong. The book is timely and crucial reading for business people, journalists, analysts, and policy-makers.
Customer Reviews:
an absolute must for anyone who wants to better know HK.......1998-05-08
I'm a studenf of the author at University of Hong Kong, although he's an American , his book tell me more about HK than anything else ever did. I began to have a fresh look at the things that's been around me for so long. This book is a must read for those Americans who know nothing but to raise the "free Tibet"sign whenever a Chinese official arrive and those who keep saying how Hong Kong will be a ruin after the handover.

Customer Reviews:
A Very Helpful Read.......1999-07-15
Updated for 1988, this is one of those books that is organized for easy scanning - a fact I really appreciate. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Interactive Media Relations and Building Relationships with Reporters. The large number of case studies, online resources and specific strategies found within this book make for an easy recommendation.
Great Book!.......1999-04-03
In several years online, this is the first time I have written email for the sole purpose of commending a product wholeheartedly and without reservation. I borrowed your Online Marketing Handbook from my local public library out of curiosity, and became progressively more impressed as the pages turned.
I am a 33 year old student of Travel and Tourism, and will open a travel agency in a couple of years.
My weaknesses however, are in sales and marketing, (which I am studying) and your book has provided me with many answers to questions; some of which I had not yet thought of asking. Your examples and case studies are great resources, and you present currently practised techniques in a thoughtful, non-judgemental manner; discussing their pros and cons objectively. Moreover, the number of online resources relevant to your subject that you reveal would almost justify the cost of your book alone.
To summarise; thanks for a terrific resource, you can count on at least one sale to me, and I hope you make as much money from the Online Marketing Handbook as I intend to from its use.
Great book!.......1999-01-13
I have been reading your Online Marketing Handbook to help me reposition my career from broadcast sales to internet sales and have found it extremely helpful.
A Review from a Competitor.......1998-09-08
Dan Janal is a direct competitor of mine. He writes books, articles, speaks, and consults on Internet marketing and so do I. We both started marketing on the Net long before Cyberspace was an overused word. His Online Marketing Handbook (OMH) competes in many ways w/ my "Essential Business Tactics for the Net." Perhaps that's why the two books are often seen on each others Amazon pages under "People who bought this book also bought..." Well, I'm here to say publicly I've learned one heck of a lot from Dan and OMH over the years. I still refer back to it from time to time.
I recommend you buy his book. I use many of the practices in it. Many of those practices were first documented in the first edition of OMH. Anyway, **after** you buy his book, see how it compares w/ mine. Dan and I would tell you they complement each other quite neatly.
Respectfully Submitted by Larry Chase, Author, Speaker, Net Consultant
Success Magazine Review:.......1998-09-07

Book Description
Customer Responsive Management is part of an important new series designed to provide business and engineering students with a full understanding of the issues of Total Quality Management. The series will also be a valuable resource for practising managers and engineers. Modern organizations perform different types of activities, each of which requires a different management approach from project management to production management to responsive management. This book considers the need for increased responsive management in a constantly changing business environment where customers are demanding specialized treatment and competition is forcing firms to be responsive in order to survive. Customer Responsive Management integrates all the components of responsive management - the need to empower employees, the need for improved customer service - into a logical model which can be followed in order to achieve the management objectives of the responsive organization.
Customer Reviews:
SUPERLATIVE WORK ON ENTERPRISE RESPONSIVENESS !!.......2003-04-07
The literature on enterprise responsiveness is rather limited, but this book is an exception and had a lasting impression on the reviewer in that it ignited an abiding interest into the nature of responsiveness and characteristics of responsive enterprises.
This is the only book that I am aware of that dwells on the nature of `responsiveness' and that too from the perspective of a customer! But the real significance of Davis's approach to `responsiveness' is revealed only when one applies this to understanding the nature of the IT services firms. I have always been puzzled by the apparent contradiction between most of the received wisdom in management literature on such firms and my experiences of working with such firms throughout my professional career. But, put on Davis's lenses and all contradictions simply disappear!! Out comes consistent explanations for capability/ capacity/ core competency, best-practice guidelines, multi-skilling, centers of excellences, network of delivery firms specializing in different areas, the essential tension between the scope versus specialization, or, assignment/ control of projects versus project deliveries, percentage of resource utilization, yield management and so on, and, above all the phenomenon of outsourcing!
I recommend this book to anyone interested in customer-centricity -- which is almost everyone! Read this book for its declared purpose of `customer responsive management', but if you are one of the thousands of IT professionals trudging along the information highway, this book is a must - this maybe your only handbook to make sense of this crazy industry.
Destined to become a CLASSIC of the 90's; for this reviewier its a prized possession.
Revolutionary, A step beyond Mass Customization!.......1998-07-07
The concepts in this book will change the way you do business. Davis and Mandrodt teach us how to respond and develop offerings unique to each customer. No longer will you view customers as nameless, faceless masses (look out marketing, its about time). The examples are clear and valuable. A must!

Book Description
The three dominant forces shaping societies and economies around the world are globalization, privatization, and liberalization. Because these processes are interrelated, they must be addressed collectively. The contributors to the volume show that globalization, privatization, and liberalization are multidimensional phenomena that impact not only the economic considerations of governments, but also sociocultural and environmental aspects of societies. The three phenomena also affect these units of analysis-- which Rao and his colleagues identify as regional, country, industrial, and organizational. The result is a cogent discussion of these powerful global forces, for the academic community, professionals in economic development, banking, finance, international investment, and global commerce. After treating the conceptual issues of meaning, definition, and differing interpretations and perspectives, the volume examines the historical experience with regional economic integration. The flow of foreign direct investment--a major consquence of globalization, privatization, and liberalization of economies is considered next. This leads to a study of the challenges created for management at the microlevel in organizations, such as the intensification of competitiveness, and the increased importance of technology and technology management. In their examination of country-specific issues, the contributors show how widely experiences vary with regard to the way in which the three major processes are implemented and how the policies behind them are adopted. Finally, in their discussion of sectoral and industry-specific issues, the contributors note that great variations on how different industrial sectors and industries will approach and recreate themselves under the power of the three great processes.
