5 out of 5 stars Perfect Guide to TM Law for Lawyers, Students, & Businesses.......2004-07-28

Mr. Franklin's book provides a wonderful guide to Trademark law that is appropriate for attorneys, students, and businesses alike. As an attorney, I found the book insightful. As a teacher, I found the tone of the book appropriate for my students. It is easy to read, straightforward, and enlightening. I recommend this book to any business owner who is seeking to learn more about Trademark law and protect their brand.

2 out of 5 stars Legal Reference Guide.......2004-02-04

This book could be useful to the right reader. The emphasis is legal/trademark. It's a mini-text heavy on tradmark basics, definitions and court decisions. Franklin provides guidance on topics like trademark process and the differences between a copyright, trademark, etc.. Ir addresses the legal aspects of how to keep your trademark from becoming a generic word as was the fate of Xerox (we all should have such problems.) The book would probably be a good intro/reference for law students or paralegals but as a marketing mgr for a small company it wasn't what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Resource For Every Business.......2003-12-09

Mr. Franklin's book is an essential resource for every lawyer and business executive. Mr. Franklin attempts to use every day language to describe the complex legal issues involved in protecting a busdiness's trademark and succeeds masterfully. The book is clear, concise and comprehensive. If your business has trademark or trade name worth protecting, you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A concise, no-frills, instructional guide.......2003-11-06

Written by private practice lawyer Talcott J. Franklin, Protecting The Brand is a concise, no-frills, instructional guide to promoting, maintaining, protecting, and utilizing trademarks while insuring and safeguarding that brand name and its consequent recognition value in the highly competitive market place. Individual chapters cogently address the general use of brands, brand strategy, trademark enforcement, brand standards, risks and benefits of licensing, and more. Protecting The Brand is very highly recommended reading -- especially for anyone with an intellectual or product-based concept to protect.

From the supplier: Team-oriented or group-based instruction has received an increasing amount of interest from teachers and educators because of a variety of factors. These variables include, among others, the use of work groups and task forces within businesses, the acknowledgement of the increasing lack of interpersonal and team skills among business school graduates and the value of using team work to develop higher-level learning and problem-solving skills.

    Book Description

Fourteen-year-old Jack Morgan, determined to get justice for both himself and his symbiotic dragon partner Draycos, narrowly escapes a trap set by the notorious Malison Ring, thanks to another teen Alison Kayna, with whom he once worked as a reluctant mercenary. She in turn now needs his help to get to the primitive world of Rho Scorvi. There, at the edge of a hundred-mile-wide forest, they make a shocking discovery: traveling with a group of the planets native Erasvas is a small lost colony of Draycoss race, the Kda. But unlike Draycoss people, these Kda are slow, lethargic, and unintelligent. When the Malison Ring tracks them to Rho Scorvi, Jack must shield this herd of animals from their ruthless pursuers, or they will become the newest victims of the genocide that threatens to wipe out their entire race. But even more importantly, he must protect, from the mercenaries and Alison, the dark secret of the herd and Jacks poet-warrior ally. This new sf adventure, which can be read on its own terms, is the most exciting novel yet in this popular young adult series.

    5 out of 5 stars Characters Develop.......2007-08-31

In this, the fourth book of the Dragonback series Timothy Zahn takes the reader to a strange planet where Draycos and Jack are being hunted by the mercenaries that hold the the information the pair need to save Draycos' people from being ambushed. On this planet they find a race of beings called the Phookas who appear to be of the same race as Draycos, but they appear to be at the level of herd animals, which makes Draycos question where he himself may actually have come from. They are acoompanied by Alison someone who Jack metDragon and Soldier: The Second Dragonback Adventure (Dragonback) with her help they defeat the mercenaries, and escape to fight another day, but Alison seems to have her own agenda. Zahn does a great job in developing the relationship between Draycos and Jack. The series keeps getting better and better.

5 out of 5 stars Dragon and Herdsman.......2007-01-10

great book, amazing quality. hard back book with a very decorative cover. all around a great buy...

3 out of 5 stars Too short .......2007-01-04

After reading the previous novels in this series, I expected a more rounded story for the end novel (it may not be). The culmination of the big fight against the evil magicians seemed to be pretty much a throw away, and new discoveries about the 'new' dragon habitation they are living in were not really detailed. I love this series, I just hope if there are any more books, that the author returns to his normal great story.

5 out of 5 stars "Most of the Rest Was Verbal Scribble".......2006-11-18

Says Jack in this new "Dragonback" novel. Heh. I plan to steal this for myself and use it as soon as possible.

"Dragon and Herdsman" is the pivotal fourth novel in the "Dragonback" series. In this book, an important truth about the fate of Draycos's people, the K'da, is revealed and so is the true nature of a henceforth mysterious character, Alison Kayna.

This book finds Jack stranded on a planet full of Phooka, which are actually K'da. Their senses have been dulled by living an idyllic life and Draycos is disgusted at first. But he and Jack both soon find that things are more than they seem.

Fans of this series won't want to miss this newest work by Zahn. Things are really getting rolling with this series, which I only just recently started reading. I can't wait to see more!

3 out of 5 stars Fast enjoyable read, with some real series developments.......2006-11-03

Dragon and Herdsman is the fourth novel in Timothy Zahn's ongoing series about 14 year old thief Jack Morgan and his alien symbiotic companion, Draycos, a K'da poet warrior who looks like a (small) dragon and who can become 2-dimensional and reside on Jack's skin, looking like a tattoo.

Jack and Draycos are looking for evidence of the rendezvous to which the remnants of Draycos' people are being lured. Human mercenaries are apparently plotting with an evil alien race to exterminate the K'da and their usual hosts, the Shontine. Jack's attempt to steal the data from one branch of the mercenary group goes wrong, but he is rescued by an old acquaintance, a girl of his age named Alison Kayna. In exchange he takes Alison to her planned rendezvous with her friends on another planet -- where, to their shock, they meet some more K'da -- but degraded K'da, with limited intelligence, hosted by fairly unintelligent humanoids. And then they are attacked by the mercenaries -- so Jack and Draycos and Alison escape into the forest on this planet, herding the K'da and their hosts. The three of them outwit the mercenaries a few times, while they make a shocking discovery about the supposedly unintelligent K'da like beasts on this planet. And we know that Alison has apparently nefarious motives of her own ...

Fun stuff -- and this might be the best of the series after the first. Fun, as I said, but awfully slight -- a fast read, enjoyable, but nothing special.

                      Book Description

Amazonian Caboclo Society is concerned with peasant society in Brazilian Amazonia. Most anthropological work in Amazonia has focused on Indian groups, and caboclos (peasants of mixed ancestry) have generally been regarded as relics of the haphazard development of Amazonia and have received little serious attention. This volume aims to analyze the reasons for the relative 'invisibility' of caboclo society. It traces the development of caboclo societies and argues that much of the current discussion of 'sustainable development' fails to recognize the important legacy of historical caboclo society.

3 out of 5 stars invisibility is the key word here!.......1999-06-26

The brazilian human beings described as "caboclos",surely deserve to finaly become part of the mainstream civilization in their own country! Truth is that it is not an easy task, due to human nature , you know... kind of like human intolerance... It's similar to the concept of "Hiphenated- America"... Antropologists and sociologists wouldn't be able to cure such malade! The heart of the problem and the answer to it could only be fixed by an individual's desire to do better within oneself. To remember Christ's commendment to "Love one another". To mind the "Golden rule" and do unto other as one wants done unto oneself. Children need to be treated with respect, in order to grow up and teach respect to others. Children need to be taught of HOPE, and that is a most important element, one which is missing from the life of the peasant caboclo...

5 out of 5 stars Setting your brand on fire........2001-06-09

There are so many books on the market that discuss the concept of 'brand' from so many different points of view, that it's difficult to sort out the good from the bad. This is one of the good ones.

Moon and Millison define the basic concepts around brand. They explain in clear buzzword-light language what influences the growth and positioning of a brand. Finally, they provide ample and well-explained pointers to further reading to help understand some of their basic ideas more clearly.

As a consultant working for a systems integrator, one of the things that impressed me the most was the focus on execution. Many books about branding seem to imply that the technical details are irrelevant to brand success, but _Firebrands_ makes the point that a relationship with a customer only has brand value when supported by appropriate policies, training, and technical infrastructure. This is a message that can't be, IMO, repeated often enough.

Well worth the time to read.

                      5 out of 5 stars my review.......2001-03-08

I have read Firebrands and found it extremely useful. As a systems integrator in St. Louis, I have used this book to help my clients understand the importance of a technical infrastructure in building a vibrant brand.... Mind you, this is not a 60 second brand manager book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Not Hype! A System for Reality...and innovation........2001-03-05

Firebr@nds is not a bedside book, it's a cookbook, a tool for being AT CAUSE when it comes to building successful, powerful communications for the internet.

As a Technology Interface Architect , the building of brand into the interaction of the product is vital to it's success.

My clients over the past 12 years have been besieged by what appears to them this mysterious thing out there that will grow over some process, that we will somehow invoke, and it will be successful if the powers that be are on our side.

This book makes it all very clear, while eliciting sympathy for all of us who have built brands. A genuine appreciation for its complexity is gained as you read a systemization of brandbuilding in Firebr@ands.

Moon has given us a thorough and deep taxonomy for building the brand from many different pragmatic angles. The dramatic distinctions in language make it easy to use the language as a tool in any company when it comes to educating organizations in building brand.

This is a book that I will return to over and over again as I help my clients grow their products into the future. It was a very brave, and necessary book to write. BRAVO!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Frontiers - A genetic approach to the Brand.......2001-03-01

As the Chief Technical Officer of a Texas based e-services and print communication firm, I live in this interactive brandspace on a daily basis. The problem with this brave new world of pixels is simply that much is said and much is written but little intelligent communication occurs. I find the innovative and far reaching approach taken by Michael Moon to be the de facto foundation for the next "big thing".

The approach that one must take to these new media spaces and channels is not readily discernible from the clearly defined trails blazed in the more traditional areas of branding. This new territory is as different as the Earth is from the Moon [no pun intended]. The book travels beyond the areas marked as "unknown - there be dragons here" and opens a clear and understandable path into formerly mysterious areas.

What we need out here in the field is less hype and more substance. Firebrands is a rational, ground breaking treatise on the evolution of Branding. This is a pivotal work that serves as a wonderful deskside companion, as indispensible to me as my spell checker or my browser.

Michaels' best practices mental evolution from the time of the Jeff Martin led Digital Brand Building Seminars of the mid-90's to this opus show an extraordinary depth and breadth of thought and research . The Firebrands book is the Gray's Anatomy of Brand "science".

As my company moves forward with ground breaking, market defining services in the area of brand guaranty we will continue to consult the Firebrands roadmap. We anxiously await any follow-up materials that might come from this mind trust.

Be warned - this is not a shallow pop-business, executive book of the hour read. This is a genetic level approach to a new mindset. It must be read slowly, deliberately, and with a totally open mind. The graphics are not simply illustrative they are literally a book unto themselves. Read this brandspace atlas one chapter at a time, review the graphics, and with time and reflection you will understand.
